Opis:
The paper is aimed at assessing the influence of rehabilitation on health of ballroom dancers after sports injuries. At the turn of 2014 and 2015 ballroom dancers from all around Poland were questioned. The surveyed were professional dancers aged between 13 and 30 years. As many as 63 athletes were injured during their career. The rehabilitation of 47 of them took place in the rehabilitation centre under physiotherapeutic supervision. Only 16 of the injured rehabilitated on their own. The opinion poll based on the survey was used as a method. The questionnaire included closed and open questions which were to show the influence of injury and its treatment on future sports career. Questions were detailed and referred to the kinds of injuries and their causes, the process of treatment, duration of rehabilitation, its process and results. Questionnaire results were analysed statistically with the use of the Pearson’s chi-squared test. It has been proved that rehabilitation under physiotherapeutic supervision has positive influence on health of ballroom dancers after injuries. Specialist rehabilitation of sportsmen after sports injuries contributed to the shortening of time of the recuperation and to the complete recovery. The time of recovery of the injured who did not undergo the professional rehabilitation was longer, and it was impossible to restore lost functions in the group of 5% of the surveyed, which resulted in the end of their career. Dancers after sports injures should always undergo professional rehabilitation under the sports doctor’s and physiotherapist’s supervision.

Opis:
At the end of the nineteenth century and during the first half of the twentieth, lead dancers from different countries became famous and toured internationally. These dancers—and the companies they created—transformed various dance forms into performances fit for the larger world of art music, ballet, and opera circuits. They adapted ballet to the variety-show formats and its audiences. Drawing on shared philosophical ideas—such as those manifest in the works of the Transcendentalists or in the writings of Nietzsche and Wagner—and from movement techniques, such as ballet codes, the Delsarte method, and, later on, Eurythmics (in fashion at the time), these lead dancers created new dance formats, choreographies, and styles, from which many of today’s classical, folk, and ballet schools emerged. In this essay, I look at how Rabindranath Tagore, Isadora Duncan, Anna Pavlova, Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, Uday Shankar, Leila Roy Sokhey and Rumini Devi Arundale contributed to this translocal dance scene. Indian dance and spirituality, as well as famous Indian dancers, were an integral part of what at the time was known as the international modern dance scene. This transnational scene eventually coalesced into several separate schools, including what today is known as classical and modern Indian dance styles.

Nowadays, dance plays an important role in the modern tourism industry. Today, the craze for dancing creates great opportunities for cultural tourism. However, it should be remembered that there is a great danger of losing the most important meaning of dance by commercializing and reducing its essence. Dance tourism as discussed in the article is understood as travel for the purpose of learning about dance and its culture in places where given dance styles were born, or where they play an important national role as well as enjoying great popularity among the local community. This article is an introduction to the issue of dance tourism in an anthropological context. It presents potential attractions related to dance in the perspectives of cultural and sports tourism, it has an illustrative and descriptive character while its method is a literature review and presentation of popular examples.

Opis:
Autorka omawia opracowanie Francisa Steegmullera (w tłumaczeniu Agnieszki Kreczmar) pt. „Twoja Isadora”: Historia miłości Isadory Duncan i Gordona Craiga zawarta w ich listach i dziennikach. Zauważa, że uwypuklenie w książce relacji miłosnej przesuwa na dalszy plan zagadnienia artystyczne i niesprawiedliwie utrwala definiowanie tancerki-choreografki przez pryzmat związków romantycznych i erotycznych. Sięgając do polskojęzycznej prasy, autorka wypunktowuje omyłki i uproszczenia omawianej pozycji.
The author discusses Francis Steegmuller’s book “Your Isadora”: The Love Story of Isadora Duncan and Gordon Craig Told through Letters and Diaries Never Before Published, translated into Polish by Agnieszka Kreczmar. The author notes that its focus on Duncan and Craig’s romantic relationship pushes artistic matters into the background and perpetuates the unfair tendency to portray the dancer-choreographer in terms of her love and sex life. Based on information from Polish-language periodicals, the author lists the errors and simplifications in Steegmuller’s book. She also adds to its findings by evoking biographical details about Duncan’s public profile (the deliberate shaping of her image in the press), politics (the pro-Polish aspect of her asking the Governor General’s to leave theatre box) or her role in reforming the performing arts (her aesthetic innovations in dance and choreography). The author of the article also supplements the biographer’s findings with information about the Berlin school of Isadora and Elizabeth Duncan.

The author begins with an observation by André Lepecki concerning the fear of working with a dramaturg. Recalling several concepts that define the role of the dramaturg in dance (Lepecki, Liesbeth Wildschut, Bojana Cvejić, Bojana Bauer, Maaike Bleeker), the author juxtaposes various interpretations of the scope and forms of collaboration with the dramaturg. She reaches the conclusion that although in a professional context, dramaturgy is most of the time associated with project-based work and the freelance economy, the fusion of various functions and the growing significance of the word in dance productions make the presence of the dramaturg increasingly desireable. At the same time, she notes that the viewer’s contribution can also be considered as belonging to dramaturgy, and that the understanding of dramaturgy goes beyond the dichotomy of word/text, and movement/stage interpretation.

Focusing on the work of Yemenite “ethnic” dance companies in Israel, this article aims to understand how issues such as a shift in collective representations come to be invested into dance practices. In other words, it discusses how artistic creation and identity reconfigurations happen to associate in a dance form, and how an ethnographic study of dance practices and their contexts of performance may be a valuable way of accessing the dynamics of self-positioning of a group within the surrounding society. Linking together “classical” ethnography, analysis of dance products, and socio-political contextualisation, the present analysis shows that the articulation of two apparently contradictory ways of building these companies’ repertoire allows Yemenite dancers, choreographers, and also internal audience, to assume in one single dance form a sense of “being Yemenite” whilst not giving up the national dimension of their Israeli identity.

Opis:
Prompted by the swift economic growth and the equally rapid decline of the authority of the local Catholic Church, the 1990s witnessed a significant change in the Irish attitude towards national culture and morality. One of the fields which best illustrates these transformations is dance, whose new face can be seen as symbolically representing the Irish transition from a country still bearing the stigma of de Valera’s ethical and cultural policies to a more liberal and open-minded European nation. The 1990s are the times of abolishing the taboos imposed years earlier on the Irish body perceived as an object of distrust that needs to be kept under constant surveillance to serve the nationalist cause as an epitome of proper moral conduct. With this in mind, the paper aims to discuss both the nature of the most crucial aspects of the revolution in the Irish dance in the 1990s and the effect this has exerted on the condition of the Irish stage. This will provide substantial background for the discussion of selected recent works of such playwrights as Brian Friel, Vincent Woods or Tom Kilroy, which make extensive use of dance, showing their contribution to challenging the literary, word-based character ofIrish drama and theatre.

The workers’ district of Bytom, Bobrek, with its steelworks and a coal mine for ‘the better future’ under Communism, has now become the terrifying subject of media accounts of pathologies and hopelessness. Children continue to play against the backdrop of the derelict buildings, but they gradually abandon their dreams. The Silesian Dance Theatre in Bytom organized dance workshops devoted to break-dance, hip-hop and funk in the area. Three boys, the main characters of the story, Andrzej, Daniel and Paweł, decided to create something to portray the way they live through dancing. With a group of other dancers they prepared a performance at the local theatre. During the premiere night their families and friends entered the theatre for the first time. Will their dream come true? This paper reflects on the making of the film Bobrek dance (2002).
Trójka bohaterów filmu – Andrzej, Daniel i Paweł postanowiła poprzez taniec zmienić coś w swoim życiu. Razem z grupą innych tancerzy przygotowali profesjonalny spek-takl w tutejszym teatrze.

Opis:
This article discusses creative strategies employed by artists to redefine the role of visuality in the presentation and reception of dance. By doing it, they undermine the well-established aesthetic and interpretative approaches to the art of dance, focusing on perception mechanisms and sensory experiences of the audience. Four choreographic projects/installations are discussed in which audio, visual, and audiovisual media are used: an installation that designs the choreographic environment, a choreoauratic installation, a performance installation that uses the AR technology, and an immersive VR 3D 360° installation. They emphasise the proprioceptive and haptic experiences and the kinaesthetic awareness in the processes of creation and reception, concentrating on the body as the perceiving subject rather than the perceived object. Focusing on the viewer’s corporeal experience, they do not only step beyond the conventional visuality-based approach to dance but also broaden our thinking about its possible (and by definition sightcantered) audiovisual presentation, thus acknowledging a wider spectrum of sensory experiences.

Opis:
Aim. Ritual ceremonies in East Java, Indonesia are mostly accompanied by dances. The existence of the seblang dance in Banyuwangi, East Java, provides an attraction for local residents and tourists. With more and more people being interested in seeing rituals because of the dance, an idea arose to bring the dance to be the main source of attracting tourists by removing the ritual element and providing tourism packaging for the seblang dance which was then brought into the realm of tourism in the form of gandrung sewu. Method. This research is qualitative in nature, in which the required data can be in the form of written statements, whether contained in archives, books or documents with a focus on dance performances, charms in them, the possibility of therapeutic elements, and their relation to tourism development. The written data that was successfully collected was then confirmed with field data and information from relevant experts and experts. Results. The Gandrung Sewu Festival is a form of imitation of the Seblang dance with changes such as: a colossal form of variation, the audience does not need to pay to see it, has an economic and social impact on the surrounding environment, does not have a magical element but is more of a show, and is an imitation of the seblang sacred dance. Conclusion. The change in form and meaning of the Gandrung dance, which was originally a performance in a sacred ceremony, has become a tourism dance that meets the criteria for tourism art.

Opis:
Bharatanatyam is a classical dance form derived from ancient dance styles, which is now seen as representative of Indian culture. In India, it is the most popular classical dance form exerting a great impact not only on the field of dance itself, but also on other art forms, like sculpture or painting. The Indian-American diaspora practices it both in an attempt to preserve its culture and as an assertion of its cultural identity. Dance is an art form that relates to sequences of body movements that are simultaneously aesthetic and symbolic, and rooted in specific cultures. It often tells a story. Different cultures observe different norms and standards by which dances should be performed (as well as by whom they should be performed and on what occasions). At the same time, dance and dancers influence (and are influenced by) different cultures as a result of transcultural interactions. Priya Srinivasan’s Sweating Saris: Indian Dance as Transnational Labor is a particularly valuable source wherein its author critically examines a variety of Indian dance forms, especially Bharatanatyam, tracing the history of dance as well as the lived experience of dancers across time, class, gender, and culture. With the help of this text, selected journal articles, and interviews with Bharatanatyam dancers in India and the US, I explore larger issues of gender, identity, culture, race, region, nation, and power dynamics inherent in the practice of Bharatanatyam, focusing on how these practices influence and, in turn, are influenced by transnational and translocal connections.

Opis:
This article focuses on art, the aesthetic, and the body as a medium for self and social change in developing some thoughts on this issue of globalization and dance. The article explores how art, and specifically dance, can be a vehicle for aesthetic activism that emphasizes the importance of social justice and compassionate community. Drawing on critical and feminist pedagogies the author links pedagogy and aesthetic activism to social integration and cohesion, a sense of belonging and interdependence, and a sense of shared consciousness. The choreographic process described centers on the body as a site for self and social awareness and a critical understanding of the context of women’s lives. The aesthetic here is understood as that domain in which dominant meanings are disclosed and possibilities for social change can be imagined and realized. The author describes a community dance process in Cape Town South Africa in which notions of embodied knowledge and critical understanding come together to create a dance performance. This pedagogy suggests ways in which meaning and purpose within a changing global context can be grounded in an ethics of social justice, human rights and inclusive community.

Opis:
Autorka podejmuje próbę rekonstrukcji biografii Katarzyny Fröhlich (1811–1886), absolwentki warszawskiej szkoły baletowej, w Teatrze Wielkim szlifującej talent pod okiem Julii Mierzyńskiej. Wymienia spektakle z udziałem tancerki, w tym w partiach solowych, przywołuje pochlebne opinie prasowe o „solo mazurze” z Wesela polskiego w Ojcowie.
The author undertakes to reconstruct the biography of Katarzyna Fröhlich (1811–1886), a graduate of the Warsaw Ballet School, who honed her talent under the tutelage of Julia Mierzyńska at Warsaw’s Teatr Wielki [Grand Theatre]. She lists the dancer’s performances, including solo parts, and cites the favourable press reviews of the “solo mazur” from the ballet Wesele polskie w Ojcowie [The Polish Wedding in Ojców]. She emphasizes the vital social function of the ballet school: poor, illiterate families chose it for their children as an opportunity to learn a profession without teaching fees and acquire social capital. She notes that Fröhlich-Bogusławska’s decision to end her career as a ballet dancer resulted from her getting married. Since the autumn of 1834, she focused on her household. Her motherhood was marked by tragedy: her son Ludwik died as a child, and the other son Władysław was exiled to Siberia. Władysław survived to become a theatre critic, and his sister Zofia became a music teacher. Drawing on previously unknown sources, the author of the article verifies the date of Fröhlich-Bogusławska’s death and restores the memory about her dancing career, faded in the course of her long life.

Opis:
Autorka omawia Szkic dziejów baletu polskiego Jana Cieplińskiego, powstały na podstawie materiałów przekazanych artyście przez Leopolda Filatyna, częściowo opublikowanych przez Henryka Lińskiego w drugim tomie monografii Taniec (red. Mateusz Gliński, Warszawa, 1930), i własnych poszukiwań. Jako główne usterki publikacji Cieplińskiego autorka wskazuje: brak odsyłaczy do źródeł i opracowań, przeglądowy charakter tekstu pozbawionego struktury periodyzacyjnej, a także nieobecność krytycznej analizy faktów lub jej niewystarczający zakres. Główną część recenzji stanowi omówienie błędów merytorycznych. Istotne miejsce zajmuje też wskazanie motywowanej względami osobistymi niesprawiedliwości Cieplińskiego w opisach działalności współczesnych mu tancerzy i choreografów oraz Polskiego Baletu Reprezentacyjnego.
The author discusses Jan Ciepliński’s book Szkic dziejów baletu polskiego [A Draft History of Polish Ballet], which is based on documents passed on to him by Leopold Filatyn and partly published by Henryk Liński in the second volume of the monograph Taniec [Dance] (ed. Mateusz Gliński, Warsaw, 1930), and supplemented by Ciepliński’s own investigations. The reviewer points out the main faults of the book: the absence of references to primary or secondary sources, the lack of structural periodisation desirable in overviews of this kind, and the absence or insufficient scope of critical analysis. The central part of the review addresses factual errors. An important point of criticism is also that due to personal motivations, Ciepliński was unfair in describing the activity of his contemporary dancers and choreographers, as well as the Polish Representative Ballet. Given the unsatisfactory quality of the book, which was published in London, the reviewer feels urged to emphasize the gaps in the domestic publishing market in the field of dance history and theory.
