Opis:
The influence of precipitation temperature on structural and magnetic properties of iron/iron-oxide nanoparticles is investigated. Nanoparticles were prepared by precipitation of γ-Fe precipitates in Cu-Fe solid solution and subsequently isolated by matrix dissolution. Precipitation annealing temperatures were 773, 873, and 973 K. Nanoparticles core-shell structure and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and selected area electron diffraction. These measurements showed that average diameter of nanoparticles increases with precipitation temperature from 8.5 nm to 20.5 nm. The measurements of magnetization as a function of temperature and applied field have been performed by SQUID magnetometer in temperature range from 5 K to 200 K.

Opis:
The presence of highly dispersed metal particles on solid supports with well-defined microstructure is important in the field of functional materials, active catalysts as well as bionanomaterials for medical applications. Noble metal nanostructures, in particular silver, palladium, and platinum nanoparticles were formed from ammine complexes ([Pt(NH₃)₄]Cl₂, [Ag(NH₃)₂]OH, and [Pd(NH₃)₄]Cl₂) and supported on high ordered mesoporous silica (SBA-15) and aluminosilica matrix. In this work, the distribution, composition and crystal structure of supported noble metal nanoparticles were determined and characterized. Finally the stability of incorporated nanostructures was confirmed. The microstructures of the obtained samples were analyzed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Obtained results indicated that developed procedures of synthesis and modification of mesoporous ordered silica or their derivate by proposed nanostructures are effective and allow to obtain new nanocomposites and nanocatalysts in repeatable and controlled way.

Opis:
Porous silicon (PS) has been an attractive material for enhancing optical properties of silicon. Its large surface area for sensor applications and compatibility with silicon-based technologies has been a driving force for further technology development. In this study, ability of PS to sense at room temperature organic vapors such as acetone, trichloroethylene and hexane, which are harmful to human health, has been investigated. Electrical (DC) and photo-luminescence (PL) measurements in a controlled atmosphere (nitrogen gas and an organic vapor mix) were performed to test the sensor response towards the organic vapors. It was found that PS surface is very sensitive against these vapors. The experimental results also suggested that PS can be used as a new electro-optical material to sense harmful vapors.

Opis:
Porous silicon (PS) is well known as a photovoltaic material. However, in the last couple of years, research has focused on the use of porous silicon as chemical-biological sensors. This paper discusses the use of PS as an optical humidity sensor. Photo-luminescence (PL) quenching measurements in a controlled humidity atmosphere (mixed Nitrogen gas and water vapor) were performed to test the sensor response towards the water vapor. Surface morphologies of the PS samples were characterized by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and structural properties were investigated via Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. It was found that PS surface is very sensitive to the water vapor. The experimental results suggested that PS surface is a promising candidate material to be used as a humidity sensor.

Opis:
In this study, methanol vapor sensing of porous silicon was investigated. The porous silicon samples were anodized in HF based solution and rinsed with ethanol or deionized water after the anodisation. Porous silicon surface is very sensitive for methanol vapor sensing and the sensitivity affect from the rinsing procedure of porous silicon. The experimental results show that porous silicon is a promising candidate material for sensing methanol vapor.

Opis:
Water-sorption processes near grain boundaries in the MgO-Al₂O₃ ceramics prepared at different temperatures were studied using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Numerical values of three- and four-component treatment of spectra were used for study of physical- and chemical-sorption processes in the MgO-Al₂O₃ ceramics. To apply mathematical approach in the form of positron-positronium trapping algorithm into three-component treatment of positron annihilation lifetime spectra it was shown that physical-adsorbed water did not modify positron trapping sites near grain boundaries in water-immersed MgO-Al₂O₃ ceramics and localized mainly in nanopores. The chemically-adsorbed water modifies structural extended defects located near grain boundaries that accompanied them by void fragmentation at water desorption.

Opis:
We measured thermopower, thermal conductivity and electrical resitivity for Ca₂Sn sample across 4-350 K temperature range. Contrary to expectations from recent DFT based calculations the thermopower is not particularly large, reaching 7 μV at 350 K. The thermoelectric figure of merit renders this material in unmodified form practically unusable for thermoelectric aplications.

Temperature sensitive thick films based on spinel-type semiconducting ceramics of different chemical composition $Cu_{0.1}Ni_{0.1}Co_{1.6}Mn_{1.2}O_{4}$ (with $p^{+}$-types of electrical conductivity), $Cu_{0.1}Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.2}Mn_{1.9}O_{4}$ (with p-types of electrical conductivity) and their multilayer $p^{+}$-p structures were fabricated and studied. These thick-film elements possess good electrophysical characteristics before and after long-term ageing test at 170°C. It is shown that degradation processes connected with diffusion of metallic Ag into film grain boundaries occur in one-layer p- and $p^{+}$-conductive thick films. The $p^{+}$-p structures were of high stability, the relative electrical drift was not greater than 1%.

Opis:
Optical waveguides are fundamental components of chemical and biochemical evanescent wave sensors. Presented work is devoted to theoretical investigations of homogeneous and surface sensitivity characteristics of the inverted rib waveguide structure. The inverted rib waveguide discussed in this paper is composed of an ion-exchange based channel waveguide formed in a glassy substrate and a uniform, high refractive index, sol-gel derived $SiO_2-TiO_2$ film. Characteristics of a homogeneous sensitivity, a surface sensitivity and fundamental modes sensitivity differences in function of a uniform film thickness and a maximal refractive index contrast of the gradient index channel waveguide are given. The influence of the $SiO_2-TiO_2$ film thickness on sensitivity characteristics is discussed. The analysis is carried out on a bases off the effective index method used with the transfer matrix method.

Opis:
The paper presents the construction and test results of a long-term radiation detector module for free space optical communication operated at the wavelength range of 8-12 μm. In the module a Polish detector manufactured in the company Vigo System S.A. was applied. High sensitivity of the detection module was achieved through a multi-layered heterostructure HgCdTe with immersion lens, which is optimized for the radiation detection at the wavelength of 10 μm. Detector noises were reduced as a result of detector cooling by means of four-stage thermoelectric cooler. The developed detection module is dedicated to design a next-generation optical data link. The link will be characterized by a greater range in difficult weather conditions in relation to the currently offered links operating at the shorter wavelengths.

In optopneumatic detectors, operating on principle of the gaseous infrared detectors, the radiation absorbed in the gas is changed into pressure fluctuation, followed by periodic flow of the gas between detector chambers. This flow is usually measured by means of hot-wire or hot-film anemometers. Their parameters in a great measure determine the quality of the whole detector. The flow sensor used in optopneumatic detectors should have short time constant, high sensitivity, possibility to distinguish the flow direction, and high chemical resistance to the gas which the detector is filled with. To meet these requirements, micro-electro-mechanical system flowmeter consisting of two platinum hot films placed in series in the flow direction was made. Platinum film of 0.3 μm thickness was deposited by magnetron spattering on thin membrane, which was composed of polysilicon substrate (0.5 μm) and two $Si_{3}N_{4}$ layers with thickness of 0.1 μm. The obtained platinum elements have resistance of 32 Ω and temperature coefficient of resistance of 2.31× $10^{-3}$/°C. Hot film does not change its parameters up to 350°C, whereas typical working temperature of such films ranged from 150 to 200°C. Anemometer characteristics and voltage-current dependences were determined in this work. The linear range of operation from 0 to 10 ml/min and sensitivity suitable for optopneumatic detectors were found. The time constant of the flowmeter is equal to 11 ms (95% of final signal), that enables the detector to operate with frequency up to 100 Hz. The flowmeters were applied in detectors filled with sulphur dioxide and were tested for six months at temperature of hot-film about 150°C. During that time no changes of their parameters were observed.

We study laser light propagation in a cell containing a liquid crystal in the nematic phase. We launch hyper-Gaussian beams and follow their behavior within the cell, in time and in three spatial dimensions, utilizing an appropriately developed theoretical model and a numerical procedure based on the fast Fourier transform. We demonstrate the formation of stable "hyper-soliton" breathers in a narrow region of beam intensities, for fixed other parameters. Hyper-solitons are similar in appearance and behavior to the usual solitons, formed by launching the usual Gaussian beams; however noticeable differences persist.

In situ growth monitoring technique has been used to analyse growth disturbances during the liquid phase electroepitaxial growth of thick AlGaAs layers. It allowed us to explain the nature of growth instability occurring at the end of the growth and affecting the maximum thickness of AlGaAs layers obtainable by liquid phase electroepitaxy.

Opis:
Low-frequency Raman scattering from small spherical particles is analyzed. Frequencies of vibrational modes are calculated in elastic continuum approximation, which considers one nanoparticle as homogeneous elastic sphere. Parameters of this model are transverse $(v_T)$ and longitudinal $(v_L)$ sound velocities of material, i.e. elastic properties of bulk material. Frequencies of vibrational modes are scaled as function of mentioned bulk parameters for symmetric l=0 and quadrupolar l=2 spheroidal modes, in the case of stress-free boundary conditions. Calculated values are compared with the low-frequency Raman experimental results from literature (Ge, Si, CdS, CdSe, $CeO_2$, ...). These calculated relations can be practically used to examine nanoparticles of any bulk material. We presented also a procedure how to establish $v_L$ and $v_T$ of material from low-frequency Raman spectra and dimension d of particles.

Opis:
A new method of measurements of elastic constants of nematic liquid crystals by applying the nonlinear optical effect is presented. This method bases on measurements of a value of the reorientation threshold in a liquid crystal layer while the reorientation is induced by the light beam passing through the layer. The obtained results are in a qualitative compatibility with the results obtained by classical methods.

Opis:
In this paper the detailed study of the self-diffraction phenomena due to reorientational optical nonlinearity in nematic liquid crystalline cell is presented. The optical nonlinear effect is additionally modified by external low-frequency electric field. The dependence of nonlinear response on light polarization is also analyzed. The theoretical investigations are compared with experimental results and the theoretical predictions are in excellent agreement with experimental data.

Semi-bulk epitaxial layers of GaSb and AlGaSb up to 3 and 1 mm thick, respectively, were successfully grown by the liquid phase electroepitaxy on GaSb substrates. The growth procedure allowed us to achieve high crystallographic perfection as well as compositional uniformity of ternary layers.

Opis:
Theoretical analysis of light beam propagation in twisted nematic liquid crystalline waveguides is presented. Due to the optical reorientation nonlinearity, the light beam changes the direction of propagation and optical spatial soliton is formed. Modeling of such behavior is presented by using (2+1)-dimensional vector beam propagation method as well as simplified (1+1)-dimensional method. Although both approaches give similar results, the differences are discussed in detail.

We have studied the dynamical response at 633 and 1550 nm of a new polymer-liquid crystal composite, realized in a form of a thick grating. This composite is known as Policryps, an acronym that stands for "Polymer Liquid Crystals Polymer Slides", because it shows a sequence of polymeric sheets alternated by layers containing only liquid crystal. Policryps gratings can be electrically switched between diffracting and non-diffracting states with a good diffraction efficiency in the visible region. After optimization of their performances, including response time, in the near infrared region, they can be conveniently proposed as a key component in photonic devices for telecom applications. Our results show very interesting response times ranging from 1 to 3 ms (switching on) and from 0.1 to 0.4 ms (switching off). Furthermore, switching ON times appear to be ruled by two different physical mechanisms with characteristic times differing by one order of magnitude. A deeper insight of these mechanisms might lead to response times, all in the submillisecond range.

Opis:
Nematic liquid crystals are characterized by a giant optical nonlinearity which has its origin in the molecular reorientational phenomenon. Uniqueness of this nonlinear mechanism causes that response of the medium is dependent on many conditions. Among various circumstances, both an initial alignment of liquid crystal cell and geometry of the system are very important, but in this paper a significant role of light polarization in nonlinear effects observed in nematics is emphasized. Additionally, it is underlined that dependence on light polarization does not have only trivial aspect of initial conditions. More complex seems to be the fact that due to the high optical anisotropy of the medium the state of light polarization is changing on the way of beam propagation. As a consequence, the modifications of molecular orientation in the liquid crystal cell are strongly dependent upon light polarization.

Opis:
A connection between the Weyl-Dirac theory and scale relativity theory through the hydrodynamic models (relativistic and non-relativistic approaches) is established. In such conjecture, considering that the motions of the microparticles take place on continuous but non-differentiable curves i.e. on fractals, a Weyl-Dirac type equation was found. Some correspondences with known hydrodynamic models, particularly Białynicki-Birula's approach, are analyzed. All these results reflect the fractal structure of the space-time (a concept in agreement with the new ideas on the space-time)

Opis:
We study experimentally nodal domains of wave functions (electric field distributions) lying in the regime of Breit-Wigner ergodicity in the chaotic microwave half-circular ray-splitting rough billiard. Using the rough billiard without ray-splitting properties we also study the wave functions lying in the regime of Shnirelman ergodicity. The wave functions Ψ$\text{}_{N}$ of the ray-splitting billiard were measured up to the level number N=204. In the case of the rough billiard without ray-splitting properties, the wave functions were measured up to N=435. We show that in the regime of Breit-Wigner ergodicity most of wave functions are delocalized in the n, l basis. In the regime of Shnirelman ergodicity wave functions are homogeneously distributed over the whole energy surface. For such wave functions, lying both in the regimes of Breit-Wigner and Shnirelman ergodicity, the dependence of the number of nodal domains Ɲ$\text{}_{N}$ on the level number N was found. We show that in the regimes of Breit-Wigner and Shnirelman ergodicity least squares fits of the experimental data reveal the numbers of nodal domains that in the asymptotic limit N→∞ coincide within the error limits with the theoretical predictionƝ$\text{}_{N}$/N≃ 0.062. Finally, we demonstrate that the signed area distribution Σ$\text{}_{A}$ can be used as a useful criterion of quantum chaos.

Opis:
Nonlinear reorientation phenomena in nematic liquid crystals cause extremely large refractive index changes. However, this effect is relatively slow and the determination of the time necessary to appearing or disappearing of the nonlinear effect is an important issue. In this work we present measurements of the time of increasing the nematics reorientation induced by the light beam passing through the liquid crystalline layer. The influence of external low-frequency electric field suppressing reorientation is also reported. The obtained results describing relations between time and optical power of light as well as between time and external electric field intensity are in good agreement with theory.

Opis:
The results of electroepitaxial growth of thick GaAlAs layers on GaAs substrates are presented. It is experimentally proven that effective convective mixing of the solution volume results in the compositional uniformity of GaAlAs layers, even in spite of the high compositional non-uniformity of the material supplying the solutes (Al, As) to the solution during the growth of the layers. For the first time this allowed us to grow uniform GaAlAs layers with thicknesses up to 200-300 μm in a wide composition range from a small (5 g) amount of solution.

Opis:
The analysis of optical orientational nonlinearity in nematic liquid crystalline planar waveguides is presented. The analyzed nonlinearity leads to unique properties that are not observed in other types of nonlinear waveguides. Theoretical results are confirmed by experimental data obtained in liquid crystalline directional couplers and in the self-focusing effect observed in the planar liquid crystalline waveguides.

Opis:
Optical reorientational nonlinearity in twisted nematic liquid crystalline planar waveguide is analyzed theoretically. It is shown that optical nonlinearity for guided modes in analyzed waveguides can be approximated by saturation nonlinearity. Predicted nonlinearity is large enough to observe effects like spatial solitons formation with milliwatts of light power.

Opis:
This study focuses on detecting trends for climate change indicators, such as average monthly temperature, rainfall, humidity, and wind speed for fourteen stations located between Al Ain and Abu Dhabi cities of the United Arab Emirates. Mann-Kendall non-parametric test was run on monthly time series data for the period 2003-2015 with consideration of seasonality. Significant increasing/decreasing trends in rainfall (for four stations), humidity (for six stations), and wind speed (for nine stations) were detected while no significant trend was observed in temperature for all stations.

Opis:
This paper presents the implementation of the extended Preisach model for fluxgate sensor characteristics modeling. The developed model enables the optimization of fluxgate sensor parameters for a given core material. Model consists of two parts. The first one describes magnetic characteristics of the core, while the second part calculates output signal according to sensor dimensions and electric circuit parameters. The model is easy to adapt for modeling of other devices with magnetic cores. It can be used instead of costly and time consuming prototype testing.

The paper concerns analyses of the nanostructures based on metal-oxide semiconductors, such as titanium dioxide $(TiO_2)$ and zinc oxide $(ZnO)$ exposed to nitrogen dioxide $(NO_2)$ in an atmosphere of dry and humid synthetic air. The investigations were performed at a rather low temperature amounting to 120°C. The responses of sensors differing in the morphology of their structures have been compared. Also the time of their responses were compared with each other. The paper describes theoretically changes in the effective resistance of these structures due to the interaction of the gas. The presented results are being discussed based on the analysis of physical and chemical phenomena.

Opis:
In the paper examinations of a lightguide sensor on the base of gradient index multimode interference structures are presented. Investigated structures were fabricated in potassium-sodium ion exchange process. Multimode interference sensor was designed for ammonia detection. Bromocresol purple covering the multimode section was used as a sensing layer. Numerical calculations were performed with the use of modal analysis and beam propagation method to optimise sensor geometry and sensing layer thickness. Experimental results show the possibility of ammonia detection from the concentration of tens ppm.

For an array of eight chemoresistive gas sensors a computer pattern recognition system was built. Multivariate data analysis was performed for measurements of three gases' dilutions: hydrogen $(H_2)$, methane $(CH_4)$, and carbon monoxide $(CO)$. The pattern recognition system included a feature subset selection algorithm involving PCA and objective function. Dimensionality reduction was applied to two kinds of patterns: three aforementioned gases and six different concentrations of hydrogen. For patterns of the three gases, classification tests were performed using k-NN algorithm and N-fold based validation method.

Optical waveguides are the fundamental components of chemical and biochemical evanescent wave sensors. Presented work focuses on the theoretical investigations of homogeneous sensitivity of four-layered composite planar waveguide composed of a silica-titania film and a titania film deposited on a glassy substrate in order of citing. Characteristics of a homogeneous sensitivity and a fundamental modes homogeneous sensitivity difference of such a structure are compared with the ones for a three-layered waveguide composed of silica-titania waveguiding film. Therefore the influence of a high refractive index titania film on homogeneous sensitivity characteristics of three-layered structure is given. It was shown that homogeneous sensitivity difference of fundamental modes of four-layered waveguide can be optimized with respect to thicknesses of each layer. For each value of a cover refractive index there exists the minimal thickness of the titania layer which maximizes the homogeneous sensitivity difference of fundamental modes.

Measurements of ordinary refractive index, birefringence, density, and order parameter were made on a technologically important nematogen and the data obtained for its nematic and isotropic phase were reported. A modified wedge method was used for the measurement of the birefringence (δ n). The nematic-isotropic phase transition temperature matches very well as is exhibited from the value of refractive indices and densities obtained using different techniques. The optical anisotropy and density data were used to determine the order parameter and principal polarizability of the nematic mixture using the Vuks approach and their temperature dependence was discussed. The macroscopic order parameter was obtained and compared with microscopic order parameter. These two values agree very well.

Opis:
Results of measurements of the intensity of light scattered by a smectic liquid crystal are reported for three phases of the specimen. A strong dependence of the scattered intensity on the relative directions of polarization vector and molecular orientation is observed. A mechanism of light interaction with material is proposed, it is attributed to brillouin - like scattering of light on director - system excitations.

Opis:
In gas sensing applications we often use sensors which have poor selectivity. Such sensors are mature, cheap devices with simple application circuits. Unfortunately, their cross sensitivity greatly restricts their usefulness when used in systems which employs univariate analysis. One method which allows to overcome this difficulty is utilization of multivariate analysis methods applied to the response from the group of such non-selective sensors. This work presents the multivariate, pattern recognition system utilized to process the response of an array of non-selective semiconductor sensors to obtain the qualitative information.

Opis:
A method based on the pattern roughness was introduced for determination of the fractal dimension and tested for fractals like the Sierpiński carpet, the Sierpiński triangle, standard Cantor set, the Menger sponge and the Sierpiński tetrahedron. It was tested for non-fractal pattern like two- and four-dimensional gray scale random dust as well. It was found that for all these patterns the Hausdorff dimension is reproduced with relatively high accuracy. Roughness method is based on simple, fast and easy to implement algorithm applicable in any topological dimension. It is particularly suited for patterns being composed of the hierarchy of structures having the same topological dimension as the space embedding them. It is applicable to "fuzzy" patterns with overlapping structures, where other methods are useless. It is designed for pixelized structures, the latter structures resulting as typical experimental data sets.

We report on an incorporation of self-assembled templates of superparamagnetic Fe-O nanoparticles into tunnel magnetoresistance devices. We fabricated a multilayer stack composed of the following layer sequence: Cr/Au/Co/NP/Co/Cu on Si(100) substrate where NP stands for a self-assembled layer of nanoparticles deposited by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The X-ray reflectivity and grazing-incidence small angle X-ray scattering were employed to study the layers thicknesses and interface morphology in each preparation step. In particular, the grazing-incidence small angle X-ray scattering was measured before and after the nanoparticle incorporation as well as on the complete tunnel magnetoresistance stack. In this way, in-depth morphology profile during subsequent preparation steps was obtained. We demonstrate that X-ray analysis of the deposited tunnel magnetoresistance stack is essential for successful fabrication of novel hybrid devices consisting of self-assembled nanoparticles.

Opis:
Urban water resources are some of the main places where microorganisms can reproduce and where people can get easily infected. For these reasons, pools must be sterilized continuously. This can only be done if the water quality of the pool is in accordance with the standards of the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs. Monitoring water quality in real-time gives an instant response opportunity. With the software prepared using the. Net architecture, real-time temperature, pH, and chlorine content values of a pool were transferred to a database. Swimming pool water quality was then evaluated and compared with the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs standards via the expert system technique, which is one of the artificial intelligence technologies. In this study, results of instant evaluation of the water quality made for water resources via telemetric systems, are reported. Additionally, a remotely-controlled dosing operation was performed.

Opis:
In the frame of a non-standard scale relativity model, the specific momentum, states density and internal energy conservations laws are obtained. The chaoticity, either through turbulence in the fractal hydrodynamics approach, or through stochasticization in the Schrödinger type approach, is generated only by the non-differentiability of the movement trajectories of the complex fluid entities. Using the conservation laws mentioned above, by numerical simulations, hysteretic type effects (dynamics of hysteretic cycles) occur.

Effects of nanoparticle size (2.0-6.0 nm) and shape (spherical and cubic) on structural characteristic of atomic ordering processes and order-disorder transformation in B2-type ordered equiatomic-FeCo nanoalloys have been studied by combining electronic theory of alloys in the pseudopotential approximation with Ising-type Hamiltonian site exchange Monte Carlo simulation method. Structural evolutions in amorphous nanoparticles (2-6 nm) of $Fe_{50}Co_{50}$ alloy have been utilized via molecular dynamic simulations from room temperatures to 1700 K temperatures. It has been shown that disordering starts at surface and propagates into volume of nanoparticles with increasing temperature. FeCo nanoparticles with critical dimensions more than 5 nm have order-disorder transformation behavior almost similar with bulk B2-FeCo alloys irrespective of their shape. Molecular dynamic analyses indicate that short- and medium-range ordered atomic structures exist in quenched $Fe_{50}Co_{50}$ nanoparticles at room temperature. Deformed bcc structures and deformed icosahedron structures are most probable atomic configurations for 2, 4, 6 nm particles of $Fe_{50}Co_{50}$ nanoalloy.

Opis:
Oxide nanoparticles embedded in a polymer matrix produce nanocomposites which are useful for optics and electronic applications. Yttrium oxide nanoparticles have received much attention due to their various properties and are significantly used in fundamental and application oriented fields. The present paper reports the influence of annealing temperature on the $Y_2O_3:SiO_2$ nanocomposite prepared by sol-gel process. $Y(NO_3)_3 ·4H_2O$ and tetraethoxysilane were used as precursors and obtained powdered form of $Y_2O_3:SiO_2$ composite. The powder sample was annealed at 500C and 900C for 6 h which were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared and transmission electron microscope. X-ray diffraction data described that the broadening of peaks decreases with increase in annealing temperature which may be due to the increase in particle size. Sample analyzed by Fourier transform infrared and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the grain size dependence on annealing temperature. Cubic phase of yttrium oxide crystal structure was obtained within the silica matrix. The nanocrystallites size has been calculated using Debye-Scherrer formula, Williamson-Hall plot and transmission electron micrographs and compared at two different temperatures (a) 500C and (b) 900C.

Opis:
The paper presents the method of measuring the distance to the object based on digital image processing. The solution is characterized in that the distance measurement to the object is performed by a motionless camera with established and unchanged parameters during measurement. The camera is equipped with a one non-stereoscopic lens. The measured distance is determined on the basis of one view of an object presented on one image. The image is made at a constant and invariant setting of the optical path such as: focus, aperture and focal length.

The aim of the paper is to present a technique of reconstructing data received from a wireless sensor for measuring intraocular pressure. The algorithm was developed to automatically regenerate samples lost due to fortuitous events in clinical trials. The test consisted in measuring the pressure within 24 h, during which the intraocular pressure curve were determined. The paper also discusses the structure and the physical basis of sensor operation and shows the advantages resulting from its use.

Opis:
Accuracy of the box-counting algorithm for numerical computation of the fractal exponents is investigated. To this end several sample mathematical fractal sets are analyzed. It is shown that the standard deviation obtained for the fit of the fractal scaling in the log-log plot strongly underestimates the actual error. The real computational error was found to have power scaling with respect to the number of data points in the sample $(n_{tot})$. For fractals embedded in two-dimensional space the error is larger than for those embedded in one-dimensional space. For fractal functions the error is even larger. Obtained formula can give more realistic estimates for the computed generalized fractal exponents' accuracy.

In the paper the results of investigations are presented concerning the influence of humidity of air on the resistance of a gas sensor structure with a graphene layer. The affects of nitrogen dioxide and humidity action on graphene were studied. We indicated that humidity might play an important role in determining the gas sensing properties of the graphene layer. In the paper it has been shown that in the case of a nitrogen oxide sensor, the reaction of $NO_2$ with water vapour can generate permanent defects in graphene.

Opis:
The sol-gel technology allows preparation of the thin silica films ranging in porosity from dense to highly porous. These films can function as matrix binding molecules of pH-sensitive indicators and can be utilized as sensitive coatings for intensity based planar evanescent wave chemical sensors. This paper is devoted to manufacturing technology and characterization of highly porous silica films deposited on soda-lime glass substrates, impregnated with bromocresole purple and cresole red. Two different methods of impregnation were used: dip coating, which entails sensitization of both silica films deposited on each side of a substrate and selective deposition of a dye solution on single side of the substrate. Manufactured sensitive films were tested toward influence of gaseous ammonia and nitrogen dioxide on their spectral characteristics of the absorption coefficient and the imaginary part of the refractive index. It was shown that bromocresole purple allows detection of both gases: $NH_3$ and $NO_2$.

Opis:
Based on the log-periodic power law methodology, with the universal preferred scaling factor λ ≈2, the negative bubble on the oil market in 2014-2016 has been detected. Over the same period a positive bubble on the so-called commodity currencies expressed in terms of the US dollar appears to take place with the oscillation pattern which largely is mirror reflected relative to oil price oscillation pattern. It documents recent strong anticorrelation between the dynamics of the oil price and of the USD. A related forecast made at the time of FENS 2015 conference (beginning of November) turned out to be quite satisfactory. These findings provide also further indication that such a log-periodically accelerating down-trend signals termination of the corresponding decreases.

In this paper we present the results of investigations of graphene oxide layers using the SAW structure (structure with surface acoustic wave propagated) exposed to the affect of low concentrations of hydrogen and nitrogen dioxide in synthetic air. During the measurements, the differential signal (from two measuring channels) was recorded. The sensing graphene oxide layer was deposited only on first channel, whereas the second channel was not covered by any additional layer. The tests were made with various concentrations of the analyzed gases and at various temperatures of the sensing structure during the measurements. Analyses were performed with special emphasis on the time response of the sensor structure to changes in the gas atmosphere.

Opis:
The aim of the research presented is to investigate the effect of pH value on the structural and morphological properties of nanostructured ZnO products. Zinc acetate dihydrate $(Zn(CH_3COO)_2·2H_2O)$ has been used as precursor whereas distilled water is used as a solvent. The pH value of the sol was adjusted with monoethanolamine (MEA) and it changed from acid to base in nature. X-ray diffractometer has been used to determine preferred crystal orientation and particle size of the thin films. Film morphologies have been examined by using JEOL JSM 6060 LV scanning electron microscope equipped with energy-dispersive spectroscopy.

Microstructure and surface morphology of AgO nanocrystallites (25 nm) supported on $SiO_2$ and subjected to heat treatment in air up to 500C have been studied by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements. It has been found that heating at 500C resulted in spreading of AgO over silica and formation of quasi two-dimensional amorphous phase (silicate precursor) exhibiting very weak band at $566 cm^{-1}$ have appeared in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Nanocrystalline silver silicate of undefined structure formed at 300-500C.

Opis:
Two tri-component mixtures as base mixtures for vertically aligned mode LCD's were prepared. The eutectic compositions were theoretically estimated and experimentally verified from differential scanning calorimetry studies. A room temperature nematic mixture with fairly broad operating range emerged from each of the tri-component mixtures. The optical birefringence of these mixtures at the eutectic composition was measured as a function of temperature. X-ray diffraction measurements were done on these mixtures to obtain the orientational order parameters as a function of temperature. The order parameter values were also determined from birefringence measurements and the results were compared with mean field theory. Structural parameters like intermolecular distance and apparent molecular length have also been determined.

The paper presents the results of the investigations involving the influence of the change of launching conditions on the characteristics of the planar amplitude evanescent wave ammonia sensors. Investigated sensors are based on the channel gradient waveguides, which are produced with the application of the ion exchange in glasses. In our investigations we have tested two sensor structures of different refractive index profiles. The absorption sensitive films were produced using sol-gel technology.

Dielectric relaxation study of nematogenic 4-n-alkyl-4'-cyanobiphenyls (nCB, n = 5, 6), 4-(trans-4'-n-alkylcyclohexyl)isothiocyanatobenzenes (nCHBT, n = 6, 8), 4-cyanophenyl-4'-n-alkylbenzoates (nCPB, n = 6, 8), 4-cyano-3-fluorophenyl-4'-n-octyloxybenzoate (8OCFPB), and 4-cyanophenyl-4'-n-octyloxy-3'-fluorobenzoate (8OCPFB) was performed in the frequency range from 50 kHz to 100 MHz in the nematic and isotropic phases. The static permittivity and the relaxation process related to the rotation of molecules around their short axis was analyzed. For some of these liquid crystals anomalous temperature dependence of static permittivity in the pretransitional region of the isotropic phase was observed. Based on the Meier-Saupe-Martin model of molecular diffusion in nematics, the orientational order parameter 〈$P_2$〉 was determined from dielectric relaxation times and retardation factor. The values of 〈$P_2$〉 calculated from the dielectric relaxation data were compared with the results obtained from measurements of polarized electronic absorption. Correlations between the magnitude of the dielectric pretransitional effect and the orientational order in the nematic phase were discussed.

Opis:
Implications of the fractal potential in the system dynamics using an extended scale relativity model assuming the fractal character of the particle movements, are established. So, in the dissipative approximation of the model it is shown that the fractal potential comes from the non-differentiability of the space-time, i.e. by means of imaginary part of a complex speed field. In the dispersive approximation of the same model, the fractalization of the differential part of the complex speed field induces a normalized fractal potential which controls through coherence the system dynamics. In such context the type I superconductivity results: the temperature dependences of the superconducting parameter, the accumulator effect etc.

The paper presents the numerical results of investigations of the layered gas surface acoustic waves sensor. The base electric load of the piezoelectric acoustic line is predicted by the effect of surface acoustic waves velocity changes vs. surface conductivity, which depends on the profile concentration by gas diffused molecules into the porous film. Inside the sensor layer Knudsen's model of gas diffusion was used.

The intraday data of stock prices allow us to collect in the form of histogram the subsequent movements' proportions in price and time. Here we continue the previous work [Acta Phys. Pol. A 123, 621 (2013)], concerning the properties of subsequent price movements' proportions in the opposite directions and proportions of subsequent price movements in the same direction. Here we distinguish between the proportions with growing and decreasing second price movement in the proportion. We investigate quantitatively the effect of breaking the turning point of resistance and support levels depending on the percentage size of price movements. In the same way we treat the main peak in the histogram for the equal subsequent price movements.

The bilayer sonophore model suggests that ultrasound induces a pulsating structure in the intra-membrane hydrophobic space between the two lipid monolayer leaflets of the cell membrane, assembled by dissolved gas of the surrounding area, which absorbs acoustic energy and transforms it by creating intra-cellular structural changes. This void has been referred to as a bilayer sonophore. The bilayer sonophore inflates and deflates periodically when exposed to ultrasound and may itself radiate acoustic pressure pulses in the surrounding medium in the same way a gas bubble does: once exposed to ultrasound the bilayer sonophore becomes a mechanical oscillator and a source of intracellular cavitation activity. In this paper, we describe observations of the clustering behaviour of living cells and several other particles in a standing sound field generated inside a ring transducer. Upon sonication, blood cells and monodisperse polystyrene particles were observed to have been trapped in the same locations, corresponding to nodes of the ultrasound field. Because polystyrene is hydrophobic, it behaves like a particle trapped inside a thin gas shell. In fact, the sonophore model treats biological cells in a similar way. Microbubbles that form the ultrasound contrast agent Quantison™ behave differently, however. These microbubbles accumulated in circles faster than blood cells and polystyrene particles. In addition, they form tightly packed clusters at the nodes, indicating very strong secondary Bjerknes forces. Cluster formation is not to be expected in cells with predicted sonophore sizes on the order of 10-100 nm.

The magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles prepared by the chemical decomposition of the iron chlorides with the ratio $Fe^{3+}$/$Fe^{2+}$=2.25 were studied by means of transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy in- and without external magnetic field. The transmission electron microscopy studies show that the nanoparticles have spherical shape with diameter about 13 nm. The transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction patterns are composed of lines that could be indexed within the cubic spinel structure. The room temperature Mössbauer spectrum shows the coexistence of the broad magnetically split part and superparamagnetic doublet. The in-field Mössbauer measurements carried out in the temperature range from room temperature down to 13 K show a gradual increase in the spin canting on the surface of the nanoparticles and decrease in the intensity of the superparamagnetic doublet. The sample was subjected to annealing process performed at elevated temperature in air atmosphere in order to change the microstructure of the nanoparticles and in consequence to change the magnetic properties of the sample. The annealing process leads to the decrease in the value of quadrupole splitting of the superparamagnetic doublets.

Using solgel method $Nd_2O_3-SiO_2$ binary oxide systems were prepared. The binary oxide transformed from the amorphous phase to nanocrystalline phase upon heat treatment in air. Characterization of the $Nd_2O_3-SiO_2$ was carried out by using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The effect of the sintering temperature and time on the evolution of the binary oxide system was discussed. It is found that sintering time plays a pivotal role to obtain $Nd_2O_3-SiO_2$ nanocomposite. At temperature of 900°C, the sample was sintered for 12 h and monoclinic $Nd_2O_3$ nanocrystallites, with average crystallite size ≈12 nm, were obtained.

The system composed of the array of eight semiconductor, chemoresistive gas sensors was used for the classification of hydrogen, methane and carbon oxide gaseous samples. The classification task was performed by pattern recognition methods applied to the multivariate response of the array. The pattern recognition scheme used for classification uses a feature subset selection algorithm coupled with an objective function designed for clustering and a multilayer perceptron classifier.

Opis:
Propagation effects in liquid crystal-core optical fiber waveguides were investigated and simulated by means of beam propagation method. Spatial propagation beam distribution for anisotropic liquid crystal fibers was defined by using BPM_CAD software package (courtesy of Optiwave Corporation). The field intensity was related to the refractive index of core at the liquid crystal fiber in two different waveguide configurations: planar and radial, whereas the number of the propagating modes was calculated. Numerical results were compared with some experimental data formerly obtained.

In the present paper the peculiarities of schlieren textures of lyotropic nematic mesophases have been investigated by polythermic polarization microscopy and capillary temperature wedge methods. The lyotropic nematiccalamitics (N$\text{}_{c}$) and lyotropic nematic-discotics (N$\text{}_{d}$) formed in binary and ternary systems on the base of tetradecyldimethyl amino bromide and tetradecyldimethyl amino oxide have been the subjects of our investigations. The dynamics of time and temperature transformations of schlieren textures have been studied. The comparative estimation of schlieren textures of N$\text{}_{c}$ and N$\text{}_{d}$ mesophases has been performed. The optical force and optical sign of the schlieren textures observed have been determined.

We investigate the behavior of beams propagating in nematic liquid crystals. A spatiotemporal model for the beam propagation and the director reorientation in a nematic liquid crystal is treated numerically in three spatial dimensions and time. We demonstrate the formation of stable solitons in a narrow threshold region of beam intensities for a set of fixed parameters and display soliton breathing. Below the threshold region the beams diffract, above the region spatiotemporal instabilities are observed, as the input intensity and the optical and static permittivity anisotropies of the liquid crystal molecules are increased. We demonstrate the filamentation of solitons above the threshold with increasing input intensity.

We investigate the behavior of counterpropagating optical beam structures in nematic liquid crystals. We restrict our attention to the dipole-dipole beam arrangements. A time-dependent model for the beam propagation and the director reorientation in nematic liquid crystals is numerically treated in three spatial dimensions and time. Stable dipole beams are observed in a very narrow threshold region of control parameters. Below this region the beams diffract, above the region spatiotemporal instabilities are observed, as the input intensity is increased and also as the distance between the dipole partners is decreased. A transverse beam displacement of counterpropagating dipole beams is also found. The difference between the in-phase and out-of-phase components of the dipole is significant, but only for a smaller distance between the dipole partners.

Two previously unknown electronic states of K$\text{}_{2}$, both of $\text{}^{1}$Π$\text{}_{u}$ symmetry, have been observed by polarisation labelling spectroscopy technique in the energy region of 31500-33100 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ above the bottom of the molecular ground state potential well. Major molecular constants have been determined for these states and the potential curves have been constructed using the Rydberg-Klein-Rees method. The correlation of the observed states with atomic limits is discussed.

In this work, electrosynthesis of $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles was carried out potentiostatically in an aqueous solution of $C_4H_{12}NCl$ which acts as supporting electrolyte and electrostatic stabilizer. $γ-Fe_2O_3$ nanoparticles were synthesized by controlling oxidation of the electrooxidized $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles at different temperature. Finally the phase transition to $α-Fe_2O_3$ nanoparticles was performed at high temperatures using sintering treatment. The synthesized particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformation, infrared scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and vibrating sample magnetometry. Based on the X-ray diffraction results, the transition from $Fe_3O_4$ to cubic and tetragonal $γ-Fe_2O_3$ was performed at 200C and 650°C, respectively. Furthermore, phase transition from metastable $γ-Fe_2O_3$ to stable $α-Fe_2O_3$ with rhombohedral crystal structure was approved at 800°C. The existence of the stabilizer molecules at the surface of $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles was confirmed by Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. According to scanning electron microscopy images, the average particles size was observed around 50 nm for electrooxidized $Fe_3O_4$ and $γ-Fe_2O_3$ nanoparticles prepared at sintering temperature lower than 900°C, however by raising sintering temperature above 900C the mean particles size increases. Energy dispersive X-ray point analysis revealed that the nanoparticles are almost pure and composed of Fe and O elements. According to the vibrating sample magnetometry results, saturation magnetization, coercivity field, and remnant magnetization decrease by phase transition from $Fe_3O_4$ to $Fe_2O_3$.

Nonlinear optics of chiral liquid-crystalline media have been in scope of our interest for several years. Our previous observations in the subject had already been reported. This paper discusses a possibility of utilising the nonlinear optical properties of liquid crystals for practical purposes. We discuss an idea of "in line" intensity measurements of laser beam. The idea is based on two optical phenomena which are observed in liquid-crystalline media possessing a periodically stratified structure: nonlinear optical effect and selective light reflection. The effects start to appear by activating light intensities of the order of MW/m$\text{}^{2}$, so the method can be potentially applied at present to high-intensity light beams (corresponding laser power is approximately 0.1 W), although there are now also prospects to lower this value significantly.

We report on an experimental study of the thermal annealing processes under air and nitrogen atmospheres of colloidal Au nanoparticles deposited onto SiO₂/Si(100) samples. It was shown that Au nanoparticles during annealing under ambient conditions could penetrate inside silicon dioxide layers forming pores at that their lengths were found to be dependent on the annealing time. The influence of oxygen on the penetration process is discussed. At the same time, the annealing of Au nanoparticles under nitrogen conditions did not result in the formation of pores.

Presence of self-similar patterns in the financial dynamics is by now well established and even convincingly quantified within the multifractal formalism. Here we focus attention on one particular aspect of this self-similarity which potentially is related to the discrete-scale invariance underlying the system composition and manifests itself by the log-periodic oscillations cascading self-similarly through various time scales. Such oscillations accumulate at the turning (critical) points that in the financial dynamics are often identified as crashes. This property thus allows us to develop a methodology that may be useful also for prediction. A model Weierstrass-type function is used to illustrate the relevant effects and several examples demonstrating that such effects in the real financial markets take place indeed, are reviewed.

Meibomian gland dysfunction is one of the most common eye disorders observed in clinical practice. It applies to almost 50% of the population, especially people using contact lenses. It is believed that meibomian gland dysfunction is the most common cause of abnormal stability and integrity of the tear film. Despite this, there is no commercially available equipment for the diagnosis. The article proposes the construction of an optical sensor and a computer system for the rapid, non-invasive diagnosis of meibomian gland dysfunction. The designed hardware and software as well as preliminary results of clinical research are also described.

In this paper the influence of the heating processes on modal attenuation distribution in planar gradient waveguides produced by ion exchange method in soda-lime glass-$Ag^{+}$ admixture arrangement is presented. The influence of heating processes on modal attenuation distribution in dependence on preliminary refractive profile shape was analysed. Rib waveguides were fabricated with the use of selective, wet chemical etching of two-component waveguide films $SiO_2:TiO_2$ which were obtained using sol-gel method. Photoresist was applied as a mask in the process. The etching of the films $SiO_2:TiO_2$ was carried out in water solution of ammonia fluoride. The sol-gel technology allows the preparation of silica thin films ranging in porosity from dense to highly porous films (50%). Porous silica films can function as a matrix that is able to bind the molecules of pH-sensitive indicators and therefore can be utilized as a sensitive film in construction of intensity based fibre or planar optical sensors for ammonia detection. We report the fabrication and characterization of ammonia sensitive, highly porous silica films deposited on soda-lime glass plates and doped with the bromocresole purple, and bromothymol blue molecules. In this paper we present the influence of the substrate withdrawal speed from sol on a thickness and a refractive index of the undoped silica films, as well as spectral absorbance characteristics of the doped films. An influence of ammonia concentration in air and relative humidity on a transmission of produced sensitive films is also presented.

Opis:
Different variants of multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis technique are applied in order to investigate various (artificial and real-world) time series. Our analysis shows that the calculated singularity spectra are very sensitive to the order of the detrending polynomial used within the multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis method. The relation between the width of the multifractal spectrum (as well as the Hurst exponent) and the order of the polynomial used in calculation is evident. Furthermore, type of this relation itself depends on the kind of analyzed signal. Therefore, such an analysis can give us some extra information about the correlative structure of the time series being studied.

A large amount of stock prices intraday data allow us to create a summary of subsequent movements' proportions of the collected share prices in the form of histogram. We have created two kinds of histograms: one for proportions of subsequent increasing and decreasing price movements and the second for proportions of subsequent price movements in the same direction. We have also created the same kinds of histograms for duration of price movements. All the histograms quite well fit the gamma probability distribution. The distribution coefficients' values ν and λ for price are above 1, for time are below 1. Some proportions of price movements occur more frequently than others, creating peaks on the graph. Similar regularity occurs for the time factor. This property is often used in trading.

In this paper, preferentially oriented (002) ZnO thin films have been grown on Si (100) and glass substrates using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The dependence of the quality of the ZnO thin films at different substrate temperatures on the growth is studied. A ZnO thin film with c-axis-oriented würtzite structure is obtained at a growth temperature from 200 to 400°C. X-ray diffraction shows that the full width at half maximum θ -2θ of (002) ZnO/Si is located at approximately 34.42°, which is used to infer the grain size that is found to be 17 nm to 19.7 nm. The FWHM is 9.5° to 8° in rocking curve mode, from which the crystalline quality has been determined. The texture degree demonstrates the improvement in quality with the increase of substrate temperature, which is best at 400°C. The band gap extracted by UV transmittance spectrum has been identified as 3.2 eV at 400°C. The electrical characteristics via C-V and I-V measurements on the basis of the heterojunction thermal emission model confirm the domination of high-density grain boundary layer existing at the interface. The transport currents indicate to the presence of space-charge-limited current and trap-charge-limited current mechanisms.

Opis:
The paper presents the construction and the use of a video sensor developed to measure air pressure. A characteristic feature of the device is pressure measurement based on digital image processing and self-diagnostics performed on the basis of an image. The paper presents the results of sensor calibration and measurements taken during the tests. It has been shown that the developed video-manometer model that is equipped with a flat diaphragm allows measuring the air pressure in the range of 0-100 mbar with an error less than 2%.

Opis:
The paper presents a technique for measuring membrane displacements with one motionless camera. The method relies on measuring the distance to an object based on one image obtained from a motionless camera with a fixed-focus lens. It is proven that the used technique allows monitoring the frequency and amplitude of vibration. The tests were performed for the oscillation frequency in the range from 0.5 Hz to 6 Hz and deviations from the neutral position in the range of ± 3 mm.

The high temperature properties of $CeCuAl_{3}$ single crystal were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and high-temperature x-ray diffraction. The structural phase transition takes place around 300 °C. The phase transition changes the structural parameters only, the tetragonal $BaNiSn_{3}$-type structure is preserved. The significant changes of lattice parameters and especially atomic fraction coordinates with this transition are discussed with respect to the number of heating/cooling cycles and stability in time. Magnetic properties of as-cast and annealed sample are shown for comparison.

Opis:
A series of GaInAs/InP heterostructures was grown by liquid phase epitaxy. The heterostructures were characterized by magnetotransport measurements carried out down to 1.8 K and up 10 T. The results demonstrate the existence of the high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas in the narrow-gap GaInAs as well as the presence of residual conductance through the InP buffer layer.

Planar waveguides in which some range of the waveguide was modified by depositing on it a layer of some other dielectric, are called composite optical waveguides. Such a structure is based on a planar waveguide obtained by means of ion exchange $K^+-Na^+$ on glass, and covered by an adequately profiled dielectric layer. This kind of structure is of much interest due to considerable possibilities of taking measurements, which may contribute to a further development of the optoelectronic sensor. Especially required are sensor systems in chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, and others. Investigations on the properties of composite layers constitute a continuation of investigations concerning the construction of interferometers, which are very sensitive, cheap and easy to be produced.

Considering that the microparticle movements take place on fractal curves, the wave-particle duality is studied in the fractal space-time theory (scale relativity theory). The Nottale model was extended by assuming arbitrary fractal dimension, $D_F$, of the fractal curves and third-order terms in the equation of motion of a complex speed field. It results that, in a fractal fluid, the convection, dissipation, and dispersion are reciprocally compensating at any scale (differentiable or non-differentiable), whereas a generalized Schrödinger equation is obtained for an irrotational movement of the fractal fluid. The absence of the dispersion implies a generalized Navier-Stokes type equation and the usual Schrödinger equation results for the irrotational movement in $D_F$=2 of the fractal fluid. The absence of dissipation implies a generalized Korteweg-de Vries type equation. In such conjecture, the duality is analyzed through a hydrodynamic formulation. At the differentiable scale, the duality is achieved by the flowing regimes of the fractal fluid, while at the non-differentiable scale, a fractal potential controls, through the coherence, the duality.

Liquid crystals exhibit large electro-optic effects which make them useful for a variety of applications as fast, compact, and tunable spectral filters, phase modulators, polarization controllers, and optical shutters. They were largely developed for liquid crystal displays and in the last decade for optical telecommunications, however their application in the field of optical imaging just started to emerge. These devices can be miniaturized thus have a great potential useful in miniature optical imaging systems for biomedical applications. Using a collection of tunable phase retarders one can perform: 1. Stokes parameters imaging for skin and eye polarimetric imaging; 2. Tunable filtering to be used for hyperspectral imaging, fluorescence microscopy, and frequency domain optical coherence tomography; 3. Adaptive optical imaging and eye aberrations correction; 4. Phase shift interferometric imaging; 5. Variable frequency structured illumination microscopy. Basic optics of liquid crystals devices is reviewed and some novel designs are presented in more detail when combined to imaging systems for a number of applications in biomedical imaging and sensing.

A correspondence between Nottale's scale relativity model and Cresson's mathematical procedures is analyzed. It results that the "synchronization" of the movements at different scales (fractal scale, differential scale etc.) gives conductive type properties to the fractal fluid, while the absence of "synchronization" is inducing properties of convective type. The behavior of a conductive fractal fluid is illustrated through the numerical simulation of plasma diffusion that is generated by laser ablation. Rotational and irrotational convective behaviors of a fractal fluid are established. Particularly, at Compton spatial and temporal scales, the irrotational behavior implies the standard Schrödinger equation.

Reduction processes of $WO_{3}$ nanopowder either with carbon or with hydrogen were observed using X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscope. The phase transformations, separation, grain size and electrical conductivity of $WO_{3-x}$ nanopowder during reductions via partial pressure high energy ball-milling have been studied. During the carbon-reduction process the monoclinic $WO_{3}$ structure transforms to nonstoichiometric Magneli phases $W_{40}O_{118}$, $WO_{2.9}$ and finally to $WO_{2}$ and W mixed phases. The Magneli $WO_{3-x}$ phases exhibit specific fringe contrast imaging of well-ordered crystallographic shear planes. In comparison, the monoclinic $WO_{3}$ structure transforms to hydrate $WO_{3}·1/3H_{2}O$, hexagonal $WO_{3}$, non-stoichiometric $WO_{2.7}$ and finally to $WO_{2}$ and W mixed phases during the hydrogen-reduction process. The inclusion of hydrogen atoms between the $WO_{6}$ octahedral structure shifts the reduction steps to lower milling times. It demonstrates that the formation of hydrate $WO_{3}$ phases enhances the amenability of the system to reduction. The activation energy for conduction was deduced from the Arrhenius equation and was found to depend on oxygen partial pressure or presence of the hydrogen atoms. The defect band model was used for interpretation of these behaviors. It supposes that the surface oxygen vacancies introduce donor levels in the gap of semiconductor, so free electrons are produced by reduction.

Small values of external perturbation forces made it possible to use a torque magnetic drive as a control system. Today, satellite orientation systems use pulsed-type algorithm for discharge of an angular momentum accumulator. The feasibility of using other algorithms (continuous, continuous-pulsed and algorithm of torque magnetic drive operation using `forecast' models of accumulated angular momentum and geomagnetic field) is not covered and not examined, although each has certain advantages for certain types of satellites and their conditions of operation in space. The article highlights satellites operating conditions in space, considers satellites orientation method using a torque magnetic drive and substantiates the necessity of satellite motion simulation with further establishing a technique for evaluation of orientation system given the effect of permanent magnetic and gravitational fields, the type of discharge of accumulated angular momentum, the height of trajectory and the nature of random perturbations.

Crystalline nanocomposite KDP/Al₂O₃ was obtained by growth of KDP nanocrystals inside nanopores of amorphous alumina matrix (Al₂O₃) with pores diameter of 35 nm. Performed atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that Al₂O₃ matrix is filled up with a tetragonal phase KDP nanocrystals in preferred crystallographic orientation [100]. The nonlinear optical response was studied by means of second harmonic generation via the Maker fringe technique employing picosecond laser pulses at wavelength of 1064 nm. The polarization dependent second harmonic generation response was observed mainly due to the macroscopic crystalline structure anisotropy of KDP/Al₂O₃ nanocomposite. The investigation of such type of nanocomposites which combine nanoscale nonlinear optical materials has a great importance since they may improve the performance of entire system.

(4-(4'octylobiphenyl)carboxylan) 4-(2-methylobuthyl) phenol (CE8), the substance showing complex polymorphism, has been investigated using the dielectric spectroscopy method. This substance exhibited polymorphism during heating and cooling: a few smectic phases, a cholesteric phase, and a blue phase as well. Despite the fact that the substance polymorphism depends on the rate of heat flow existing of the blue phase has been confirmed by polarizing microscopic observations as well as dielectric spectroscopy investigations.

This article aims to present the possibilities for the passive spectral measurements and qualitative interpretations of inside-the-object gases. The basic features and applications of open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy for measuring atmospheric and process exhaust gases are discussed. Methods for modelling and interpreting the spectra used for in situ measurements are presented. As an example, a spectrum simulation was investigated using $CO_2$, a gas present in substantial quantities in various exhaust gases. The spectrum varied significantly with temperature allowing its use for diagnostics purposes. Thus, examples of measurements made using passive transmission with a heated object as a radiation source are presented. A baseline correction procedure was necessary to obtain a transmission (or absorbance) spectrum. The gas content and temperature were determined based on these measurements.

This work discusses uniformity of overlays deposited with radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition method on a core of partly uncoated multimode polymer-clad silica optical fiber. Although the method provides uniform films on flat surfaces, uniformity of deposition on optical fibers suspended in plasma is questionable. In this work we investigate optical-fiber-based structures coated with high-refractive-index ($n_{D}$> 2.3) silicon nitride ($SiN_{x}$) where lossy mode resonance phenomenon appears. Experimental studies, where the fiber is rotated by 90° and 180°, are compared to those where the sample has not been rotated between the depositions. Deposition process time for all samples has been adjusted in order to obtain the same thickness of overlays on all the fibers. The experimental data has been supported by numerical simulations. The experiment has shown that the rotation modifies transmission of the $SiN_{x}$-coated fiber structure, as well as its response to external refractive index. As an effect of rotation we observed shift of the resonance appearing at about λ =600 nm towards shorter wavelengths and reduction in amount of the resonances. However, the resonances appearing in transmission spectrum for sample with no rotation show the highest refractive index sensitivity reaching about 690 nm per refractive index unit.

The basis for the proposed solution is the measurement of the light reflected from the membrane in different configurations of light emitters and light detectors. The paper is describing a proposed measurement technique, measurement circuit and preliminary static measurements results of the developed measurement system. Future development plans are stated.

The aim of the publication is to describe the multifunctional optical sensor for analysis of dynamic pupillary light reflex developed by the authors which could be used as an objective indicator of human fatigue. The authors utilized knowledge gained from past experimental studies to develop a sensor, which along with custom software for detection of parameters of dynamic pupillary reflex provides a quick analysis of the human psychophysiological condition. Furthermore, the obtained parameters may also be utilized for medical purposes. The authors present the results of pilot studies prior to the development process of the sensory solution. The obtained result show that the type of light stimulation of the retina has a significant impact on the dynamic parameters of the pupillary reflex. The results played also an important role in shaping the structural assumptions of the sensor, so that it can serve as an indicator of the human fatigue level. The article includes results of experimental research conducted during the testing process of the sensor using various parameters of frequency light excitations, luminance and chrominance.

There is a demand for highly refractive index sensitive devices simultaneously insensitive to temperature (T) changes. We investigate both T and refractive index sensitivity of long-period gratings coated with 100 nm thin high refractive index (n ≈ 1.9 at λ = 1550 nm) silicon nitride $(SiN_{x})$ film. The long-period gratings with period of 500 μm were induced in standard Corning SMF28 fibre using electric arc and nanocoated with $SiN_{x}$ by radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition method. As a sensorial effect we investigated resonance shift with temperature variations (from 30 to 70°C) for measurement in deionized water ($n_{D}$ = 1.33) and glycerine ($n_{D}$ = 1.46). In case of measurements in water for resonance observed at λ = 1510 nm, refractive index sensitivity of - 85 nm/RIU and temperature sensitivity of 0.09 nm/C $(H_2O)$ were obtained which gives refractive index-T sensitivity ratio (RI/T) of - 944°C/RIU. Refractive index and T sensitivity of sensor covered with $SiN_{x}$ film increased to - 618 nm/RIU and 0.22 nm/°C, respectively. Thanks to nanocoating deposition, refractive index-T sensitivity ratio was improved by factor of 3. In case of measurements in glycerine significant influence of glycerine's thermo-optic coefficient on obtained results was observed. It is worth noticing that $SiN_{x}$ coating stabilizes sensing behaviour of the sensor.
