Opis:
Enzensberger’s poem inevitably poses questions about the relationship between literature and life. While the ambiguity of the metaphors suggests an absence of meaning, the autobiographical allusions underlying this text point to the necessity of meaning. This essay approaches these aspects of the text as a unity by positing metaphor as a primarily anthropological category that puts aesthetic distance und existential involvement in a polar connection. The starting point of this interpretation is one of Enzensberger’s sources that was previously not taken into account: Ossip Mandelstam’s essay Conversation about Dante (1994a).

Opis:
The Aeneid is the most important intertext for the opus magnum of Dante; and Virgil, sometimes metonymically identified with his work, plays a relevant, or indeed crucial part as one of the characters in it. The main purpose of this article is, on the one hand, an analysis and interpretation of certain, only rarely investigated aspects of the relation between Virgil and Dante the pilgrim, in particular those which deal with the defeat of the former as an authority and guide for Dante on the road to spiritual perfection. They result mainly from Virgil’s excessive rationalism. In the critical moments of their journey through the otherworld Dante the author shows the frailty of Virgil’s Christian faith, attained only after his death and not illuminated by divine Grace; he also discloses the deficiencies in Virgil’s understanding of good and evil. On the other hand the author of the article analyses the intertextual “dialogue” that the Comedy conducts with the Aeneid on the basis of the Dantean conception of art in general, and of poetry in particular, taking selected examples into consideration. An essential component of this dialogue is Dante’s reinterpretation of Virgil’s masterpiece, which assumes the form of an aemulatio and tends to reveal the Christian potentiality in the Aeneid, of which Virgil the poet was, of course, utterly unaware.

Opis:
The article is the first attempt at a holistic view of Stanisław Vincenz’s relationship with Italian culture. Since his youth, Vincenz would visit the Italian Peninsula travelling to Venice and, already as an emigrant after World War II, made a few visits to Naples and Tuscany. These journeys resulted in numerous comments included in his essays on Dante Alighieri, as separate overview Z perspektywy podróży (From a traveller’s perspective) and List z Neapolu. Dialog z Czesławem Miłoszem (A letter from Naples. A dialogue with Czesław Miłosz). Italian journeys, interest in Dante and Italian culture (architecture, painting, folk rituals) brought numerous Italian motifs in the tetralogy Na wysokiej połoninie (On a high mountain pasture). The key element is included in volume II, Zwada (Conflict), which describes a group of loggers cutting down trees in a primeval Carpathian forest. In this part, a young Italian dies and is buried after a Hutsul funeral ritual which is not understood by the foreigners. The analysis of the abovementioned motifs shows how important Italian culture was to Vincenz, also in a very personal sense, given the Vincenz family’s distant Venetian roots. One may even claim that for the writer, Italy was almost a family land. Personifying the European spirit, Italy was his “broader” homeland.

The article is an interpretation of the first stanzas of the XI canto of Paradise in the Divine Commedy of Dante. The authorial reflexion, which is not connected directly to the events in the poem, is been analysed in its particular context  – the sphere of the Sun, a  place of stay of the saved endowed with distinct minds  – and subsequently, as an independent composition, even if the instrument of the interpretation will be first of all a  confrontation with other fragments of the poem. The problem posed by Dante, still valid nowadays, is that of searching simplified roads to happiness and fulfillment.

Opis:
Taking into account important changes that have taken place in the last 20 years in the fields of performance studies and cultural studies (especially de- and post-colonial studies) regarding the way in which local cultures and ethnicity are represented in the theatre and interpreted in the humanities, this article revises the ways of presenting local cultures in the Italian dialect theatre of the last decade. This analysis shows how a hegemonic (at least until recently) dramatic model developed by Eduardo de Filippo and based on producing nostalgia towards an idealised past of a local culture needs to be critically reformulated, especially from the perspective of a young generation of female artists who work in the field of dialect theatre. To this end, in this article, the author analyses the performing strategies of two of Emma Dante’s plays, mPalermu and Carnezzeria, to prove that localness is not an essentially understood characteristic of a certain community, but, rather, it should be seen as a complex performative, repetitive practice that is both bodily and discursive. Conversely, the author points out that these practices should be examined in depth and seen as a kind of cultural oppression that serves as a camouflage of some deeper imprinted relationships based on violence and domination. The examples of Emma Dante’s plays from the beginning of her career allow the author to also cast a critical gaze at an issue of primordialism, raised by Arjun Appadurai and seen as a way of viewing the Other. The latter reflects a voyeuristic pleasure of the Western world, coming from the sense of dominance over allegedly underdeveloped and primitive cultures. Emma Dante’s theatre, according to the author of this article, is an example of de-colonial artistic practice, as it subversively uses the voyeuristic inclinations of the viewer to denounce the violent character of local Sicilian scripts of behaviour that, until now, had usually been left unsaid in public debate.

Opis:
Dante and the Function of Water for an Investigation of the Self. Psychosymbolic Cosmology in the Divine Comedy The famous Epistle to Cangrande written by Dante encourages us to identify the Divine Comedy as an emblematic representation of a psychotherapeutic itinerary. The principal aim of his work is in fact creating a shocking poetic impression for freeing everyone from anxiety and pain, bringing us back to the origin of that eternal joy, which was lost through the Edenic sin, by creating the jail of egoism and the consequential abandon of a global and satisfactory perception of life. Associating itself with the feminine side of the soul and the mystery of the generation of life, the water symbolism in Dante’s poem acquires various meanings and is mainly connected with the malignant or positive rivers, which directly or indirectly indicate the right orientation for going back to the splendid sea of joy: the sea of divine intellect. This last is heaven, and corresponds to a psychic state where we can live together with the vivid memories of all the best we have experienced, learned and discovered during our mortal existence. Hell is a symbol of anguish and despair; here, a psychic emblem of a potential positive transformation is constituted by a little, apparently unimportant brook, which is studied in depth for the first time in this article, revealing the fundamental importance of this emblem, capable of guaranteeing a possible defeat of evil or, more specifically, the transformation of its destructive energy into a positive magic power, which can lead us to the stars. The whole journey of the Divine Comedy appears now more clearly as a symbolic example of ante litteram psychoanalysis.

This paper focuses on Dante’s centrality in the Umberto Eco’s reflection about persistence over the centuries of the “way of thinking” defined “hermetic semiosis” by the author of The name of the rose, which has affected at considerable lenght many contemporary “reader-oriented” theories and practices. In fact Dante, by contravening the Thomist devaluation of the poetic genre, not only assigned a revealing and mystic-prophetical function to poetry, but also, at the same time, according to Eco, anticipated the “epistemological break” begun with florentine neoplatonism, namely “that mystic text trend which is still continuing today” (Eco 1985).

Although the works of three early Italian Renaissance poets, Brunetto Latini (1220-1294), Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), and Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), may seem far removed from the social science ventures of the 21st century, these three Italian authors provide some exceptionally valuable materials for scholars interested in the study of human knowing and acting. As central participants in the 13th-14th century “humanist movement” (in which classical Greek and Latin scholarship were given priority in matters of intellectual development), Brunetto Latini, Dante Alighieri, and Giovanni Boccaccio helped sustain an analytic focus on human lived experience. Most of the materials addressed here are extensively fictionalized, but our interests are in the sociological insights that these authors achieve, both in their accounts of the characters and interchanges portrayed in their texts and in their modes of presentation as authors. Although lacking the more comprehensive aspects of Chicago-style symbolic interactionist (Mead 1934; Blumer 1969) theory and research, these early Renaissance texts are remarkably self-reflective in composition. Thus, these statements provide us with valuable insights into the life-worlds of (a) those of whom the authors speak, (b) those to whom the authors address their works, and (c) the authors themselves as people involved in generating aspects of popular culture through their poetic endeavors. More specifically, these writers enable us to appreciate aspects of pragmatist emphases on human knowing and acting through their attentiveness to people’s perspectives, speech, deliberation, action, and interaction. In addressing affective relationships, introducing generic standpoints, and considering morality as community matters, these materials offer contemporary scholars in the social sciences some particularly instructive transhistorical and transcultural comparative and conceptual reference points. Inspired by the remarkable contributions of the three 13th-14th century Italian poets and some 12th- 13th century French predecessors, the Epilogue direct specific attention to the ways in which authors might engage poetic productions as “producers” and “analysts” of fictionalized entertainment.

One of them is Enrico Cardinal Dante, a long-standing Master of Papal Ceremonies, liturgist, theoretician and practitioner. This article is an attempt to describe his participation in conciliar discussions on the liturgical reform. Investigation – based on collections of the archives of the Office of Papal Liturgical Celebrations and well-known and documented publications reporting conciliar events in detail – following the biography of the Italian Church leader, they detail his statements about issues such as Holy Communion under both kinds, concelebration, reform of the Holy Week and others. Can world peace come about through a world federation of governments? Is growing agreement and appreciation for, throughout the world, the doctrine of equal human rights inevitable? Such questions are raised by Mortimer Adler in How to Think about War and Peace. Adler argues in this book that both are possible, and in doing so he argues that the insights of liberal contract thinkers, particularly Immanuel Kant, are essentially true. Kant argues that each person has the capacity to discover within himself the foundation for human rights because they are self-evident. It follows that over time inequalities and prejudices will disappear, and people will gain the freedom to advance the cause of peace. About this account of the possibility of world peace I ask the question: is it indeed reasonable? For if it is reasonable, it is not reasonable for the reasons that would have been advanced by Aristotle or Plato or their medieval followers. In older political philosophy it is agreement about the unchanging truth of things that can bring peace. To seek the unchanging truth of things, philosophical speculation about God and things divine, is the highest human activity. It is that end to which life in this world is directed, and upon which human flourishing depends. Freedom depends upon our openness to unchanging eternal truth, even more than self-evident rights; the exercise of speculative reasoning allows for political discourse and an open society.

Opis:
This study refl ects on questions of a beginning and an end in the view of St. Thomas Aquinas and Dante Alighieri. Critical and comparative analysis will show: (1) in what ways the authors perceived the ultimate goals of humanity; and (2) what impact doing so had on their political outlooks. In both cases treatises came to life with two purposes: the declared (theoretical) purpose – discussion of how to organize a well-functioning state – and actual (practical) – resolution of the dispute between the regnum and the sacerdotium, that is, determination of which party deserves precedence. The heart of the matter lies in the differences between the two accounts, given how the two mediaeval thinkers arrived at completely different conclusions in addressing the same question.
