Opis:
The article is an interpretation of the first stanzas of the XI canto of Paradise in the Divine Commedy of Dante. The authorial reflexion, which is not connected directly to the events in the poem, is been analysed in its particular context  – the sphere of the Sun, a  place of stay of the saved endowed with distinct minds  – and subsequently, as an independent composition, even if the instrument of the interpretation will be first of all a  confrontation with other fragments of the poem. The problem posed by Dante, still valid nowadays, is that of searching simplified roads to happiness and fulfillment.

Taking into account important changes that have taken place in the last 20 years in the fields of performance studies and cultural studies (especially de- and post-colonial studies) regarding the way in which local cultures and ethnicity are represented in the theatre and interpreted in the humanities, this article revises the ways of presenting local cultures in the Italian dialect theatre of the last decade. This analysis shows how a hegemonic (at least until recently) dramatic model developed by Eduardo de Filippo and based on producing nostalgia towards an idealised past of a local culture needs to be critically reformulated, especially from the perspective of a young generation of female artists who work in the field of dialect theatre. To this end, in this article, the author analyses the performing strategies of two of Emma Dante’s plays, mPalermu and Carnezzeria, to prove that localness is not an essentially understood characteristic of a certain community, but, rather, it should be seen as a complex performative, repetitive practice that is both bodily and discursive. Conversely, the author points out that these practices should be examined in depth and seen as a kind of cultural oppression that serves as a camouflage of some deeper imprinted relationships based on violence and domination. The examples of Emma Dante’s plays from the beginning of her career allow the author to also cast a critical gaze at an issue of primordialism, raised by Arjun Appadurai and seen as a way of viewing the Other. The latter reflects a voyeuristic pleasure of the Western world, coming from the sense of dominance over allegedly underdeveloped and primitive cultures. Emma Dante’s theatre, according to the author of this article, is an example of de-colonial artistic practice, as it subversively uses the voyeuristic inclinations of the viewer to denounce the violent character of local Sicilian scripts of behaviour that, until now, had usually been left unsaid in public debate.

Opis:
Dante and the Function of Water for an Investigation of the Self. Psychosymbolic Cosmology in the Divine Comedy The famous Epistle to Cangrande written by Dante encourages us to identify the Divine Comedy as an emblematic representation of a psychotherapeutic itinerary. The principal aim of his work is in fact creating a shocking poetic impression for freeing everyone from anxiety and pain, bringing us back to the origin of that eternal joy, which was lost through the Edenic sin, by creating the jail of egoism and the consequential abandon of a global and satisfactory perception of life. Associating itself with the feminine side of the soul and the mystery of the generation of life, the water symbolism in Dante’s poem acquires various meanings and is mainly connected with the malignant or positive rivers, which directly or indirectly indicate the right orientation for going back to the splendid sea of joy: the sea of divine intellect. This last is heaven, and corresponds to a psychic state where we can live together with the vivid memories of all the best we have experienced, learned and discovered during our mortal existence. Hell is a symbol of anguish and despair; here, a psychic emblem of a potential positive transformation is constituted by a little, apparently unimportant brook, which is studied in depth for the first time in this article, revealing the fundamental importance of this emblem, capable of guaranteeing a possible defeat of evil or, more specifically, the transformation of its destructive energy into a positive magic power, which can lead us to the stars. The whole journey of the Divine Comedy appears now more clearly as a symbolic example of ante litteram psychoanalysis.

Within the mysteries of 'The Divine Comedy', it seems that the culture of Muslims is well known to Dante, above all thanks to the mediation of works such as the 'Book of Muhammad’s Ladder '(Kitāb al‑miʿrāj), the 'Travels of Marco Polo' and various writings of friar Riccoldo of Montecroce. Islam is considered a danger, yet it is also admired in Dante’s vision, for its scientific height reached in the Middle Ages. Love is the essential concept of the whole message of Christianity: it is caritas, a universal embrace that includes every aspect of man and harmonizes it. Muhammad, despite his original Christian spiritual formation, according to Dante, did not understand the concept of caritas. Therefore, he deceived others and himself, founding a new creed and a different faith, which is by no means superfluous from a Dantean point of view. Indeed, it is useless and dangerous as a heresy, due to its same nature that generates schism and, precisely, war. It is natural, in this sense, that Muhammad finds himself in hell in the vision of The Divine Comedy, grotesquely oppressed by his guilt of fraud, because he has shared the circle of love (the all‑encompassing and Trinitarian perfection of Love) with all the hatred of his anger. However, beyond all the Muslim limits of a culture of submission and the doctrine that arises from it, Dante reveals to us in his 'Paradise' a possible salvation also for Islam (apparently damned); and this for a very subtle yet strong way: the mystical way in its perfect sentimental Truth, which is tolerant, fraternal and inclusive.

Opis:
The essay reflects on Emma Dante, the unusual and versatile artist (theatre manager, actress-author, film and opera director). Emma Dante’s story condenses different and apparently conflicting experiences and knowledge (the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome, the teachings of Vacis in Turin, the laboratories with Cesare Ronconi) before the foundation of the Sud Costa Occidentale group in Palermo, in 1999, with its subsequent transformations continuing until today. The result is an irregular figure of a “matriarch”, in the fruitful vein of new Sicilian dramaturgy, which takes nourishment from the land of origin but with which she feeds a collective and authorial theatre. This theatre is both dramatic (indeed tragi-comic) and post-dramatic, with European depth, and it is not spared of controversy and criticism, as it is awkward and uncomfortable. The analysis of her performance in Cani di bancata (2006) aims to highlight themes and styles connected to a feminism that goes beyond gender in the strict sense but that is able to become a metaphor of a world and a human diversity that involves and disturbs us through an irreverent gaze.

The article presents attempt of a lecture of a series of similes selected from the Divine Comedy from the functional perspective. It means that we search the illustrative function of the series with respect to the cognitive passage of the protagonist from the mediaeval condition of alienatio through that of peregrinatio towards ordo. The condition change is observable in movement conceptualization in the three dantesque kingdoms. The basis for the observation is offered by similes which seem to form a pattern of meaning. After having drawn some conclusions about this function of the similes, we carry out analysis of two Polish translations of the Divine Comedy in order to identify the same characteristics, detected in the original, in those version of the Poem.

Can world peace come about through a world federation of governments? Is growing agreement and appreciation for, throughout the world, the doctrine of equal human rights inevitable? Such questions are raised by Mortimer Adler in How to Think about War and Peace. Adler argues in this book that both are possible, and in doing so he argues that the insights of liberal contract thinkers, particularly Immanuel Kant, are essentially true. Kant argues that each person has the capacity to discover within himself the foundation for human rights because they are self-evident. It follows that over time inequalities and prejudices will disappear, and people will gain the freedom to advance the cause of peace. About this account of the possibility of world peace I ask the question: is it indeed reasonable? For if it is reasonable, it is not reasonable for the reasons that would have been advanced by Aristotle or Plato or their medieval followers. In older political philosophy it is agreement about the unchanging truth of things that can bring peace. To seek the unchanging truth of things, philosophical speculation about God and things divine, is the highest human activity. It is that end to which life in this world is directed, and upon which human flourishing depends. Freedom depends upon our openness to unchanging eternal truth, even more than self-evident rights; the exercise of speculative reasoning allows for political discourse and an open society.

The most famous medieval controversy over the power and the temporal dominion took place between the papacy and the empire. One of the greatest advocates of the imperial domination was Marsilius of Padua, the author of an original work that demonstrated the advantage of acknowledging the emperor’s superiority over the Pope’s. The Defensor pacis, written between 1319 and 1324, was devoted to the dispute on such sovereignty issues as proving that the Pope should be subordinate to the Emperor, and not vice versa. The Defensor pacis takes issue with numerous arguments and views uttered by the papal camp and uses the appropriate quotations from the Bible and Aristotle to show their weakness and inconsistency. The work comprises three parts. The first part is a description of the ideal system, i.e., an elective monarchy, with the specified role of a ruler and a clear indication of the sovereignty of the people. The second and third parts present a challenge to the arguments of the papal camp (including the famous argument of the “power keys”) and analyze the general situation of the Church, suggesting the necessary reforms. Thus, the whole work becomes a compendium of knowledge on appropriate governance.

In 2010 in the blog nonsolusblog.wordpress.com information appeared about finding in the collection of the Illinois University Library a copy of the Italian edition of Dante's Divine Comedy that had belonged to Cyprian Norwid. Probably Norwid had this copy in the Berlin prison, and on the basis of it he translated fragments of the Italian masterpiece. On the title page, beside the poet's signature, there is the inscription “Florencja 1846” (Florence 1846). The date is a riddle, as in the light of the present knowledge it does not seem likely that Norwid could be in Italy in that year The dedication in the book (“To N. Łepkowski in remembrance of 1854 in America) has made it possible to establish that its addressee, Numa Łepkowski, was born in Volhynia about 1805, he studied at the Warsaw University, and then he fought in the November Uprising. Together with a large group of Polish veterans (234 people) he was deported to the United States, among others with August Antoni Jakubowski. Until his death (28 May 1887) Łepkowski made his living by playing the guitar: he composed music, gave concerts, but first of all he taught playing this instrument in the most famous New York homes. He was also active in organizations of the Polish community in America, and he took part in the social life of the New York elites. It was probably because of his high social status and extensive relations that Norwid met him. The death of the composer and his rank as a musician was noted in obituaries in several American, and even New Zealand newspapers Under Norwid's signature on the title page of the book there is an imprint of a signet-ring, in which elements of the Topór coat of arms, the poet's family sign, can be recognized. This is an additional premise that allows deciding that the book belonged to the poet's library.

Przetłumaczone fragmenty pochodzą z książki drugiej, są to odpowiednio: Wprowadzenie (s. 9–15) oraz obszerne partie (od Trzech bestii do Meduzy) piekielnego rozdziału trzeciego: I mostri della Commedia: Inferno (s. 47–61). Całość rozdziału przedstawia się następująco: Trzy bestie, Charon, Minos, Cerber, Erynie (Furie) i Meduza, Minotaur, Centaury, Harpie, Gerion, Skazańcy, Diabły Malebranche’a, Węże i Kakus, Giganci, Lucyfer (s. 47–89). Opis:
W narracyjnym i lirycznym dorobku polskiego pisarza silnie wyczuwalna jest pamięć Boskiej Komedii – niewyczerpanego źródła inspiracji, z którym autor prowadzi nieustanny dialog poprzez odniesienia, cytaty, sugestie, przepracowywanie tematów i motywów.
Both, Dante Alighieri’s ouevre and him as a person, ignited a grand, incessant passion and unflinching interest of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski (1812–1887), which was fueled by a deep sense of awe. Kraszewski’s works thrive on Dantean motifs mediated by the 19th-century culture that was saturated with the latter. Dante’s towering persona reigned over the 19th century, the era during which not only his ouevre but also his person were idolised, often by applying a political key to him. The Polish writer’s narrative and lyrical output bears a palpable residuum of the Divine Comedy – an inexhaustible source of inspiration he continually aluded to by references, quotes, suggestions, and reworking of topics and motifs. After scrutinising literary reminescences of the Divine Comedy recognised in Kraszewski’s works, the article proceeds to focus on reverbarations and echoes traced back to the masterpiece’s part one, in particular Inferno V (the fifth song) and their relationship with the source text. The astounding fate that befell Paolo and Francesca creates a context for the analysis of a narrative poem Paolo. Powieść wenecka (‘Paolo. A Venetian Tale’; 1843) and a novel Pod włoskim niebem (‘Under the Sky of Italy’; 1845).

Opis:
Despite the tormented national reality, the faith in the future redemption of Poland and the idea of change and purification gave birth in the works of the Polish romantics to the hope of salvation, of the advent of the divine kingdom on Earth. Undoubtedly an idea contributed to the birth of this optimistic vision, that was the conception of a Poland like the “Christ of the nations”, which took hold in the new mystical atmosphere of the early nineteenth century and which was combined with Christian eschatologism, revolutionary aspirations and hopes for the future redemption of history. The apocalyptic and millenarian motifs present in the Divine Comedy undeniably played a part in strengthening the messianic ideas of the romantics: the present from a fertile ground for evil and chaos, through suffering and destruction, became the privileged moment of expiation that prepared the advent of the city of God. The paper aims to analyze some motifs from Dante’s Paradise which inspired some of the most stunning pages of Polish romantic literature.
