In the article, Milosz’s poem Campo di Fiori and Brodsky’s cycle The Roman Elegies arecompared in the aspect of the interpretation of the role of culture and poetic word in the existentialself-identification of the person and the poet. Through the analysis of Rome’s image in the lyricplot, the author of the article compares the worldview of the poets and their conception of the roleof poetry in history and in being. The second part of the article interprets the direct dialogue ofcontemporary Russian poets (Alexei Makushinskii, Gleb Shulpyakov, Ivan Barkov) with Milosz,that offered new variants of the Polish poet’s lyric collision.

Opis:
This article presents the changes through history in the reception of The Captive Mind by Czesław Miłosz. The book was published in 1953, first of all for the foreign readers. There were editions in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish. However, it mainly evoked emotions of Poles at home and on emigration. After the 1989, with the first legal mass edition, we observed a decrease of interest in Poland for the Miłosz’s text. It has become a classical work, it kept up didactic function. On the other hand, the world response argues, through universal interpretations and new translations in 21th century (a Belorussian, Russian, Turkish, Catalan, Serbian), that the Miłosz’s propositions are current and attractive outside Poland, in other geopolitical conditions.

The theme of the article is an attempt to answer the question concerning the way in which Czesław Miłosz’s novel The Seizure of Power exists in the contemporary readers’ reception. To which extent does it nowadays fulfill (or not) the functions for which it was artistically designed half a century earlier? Is it attractive, or do the standards of reading evolved which made it old¬ fashioned and unable to provoke readers emotions? The article concentrates also on searching for important distinctive features for the type of novel that The Seizure of Power is or appears to be today. It can be regarded both as a novel concerning politics with a clear autobiographical suggestions and as a key novel of a certain factual value. By a con-temporary (especially young) reader this first novel of the Nobel Prize Winner will be re-garded as a historical prose. By literary critics and new monographers of the author of The Issa Valley it will be treated today like the caesura in Miłosz’s artistic biography – such atti-tude is now more visible than ever before. It marks the point from which he distances himself from political „journalism” and favors poetry, essays and criticism

The article is an interpretation of Czesław Miłosz's poem On Salvation. The basic observation on the level of text analysis is concerned with the phenomenon of its ambiguity. It is discussed both in the semantic and in the strictly artistic order, that is in the order of poetic language. Miłosz's poems and essays, in which the problem of the existential quality of “depravation” appears, the tradition of Japanese Zen poetry, and Adam Mickiewicz's Zdania i uwagi (Opinions and Remarks) are a historical-literary context referred to in the article. The center of the meaning of the poem is identified in the article not with the questions of faith or lack thereof, but with the question about man's cognitive possibilities, about the limitations of imagination confronted with the problem of salvation.

Autorka artykułu prezentuje historię powstawania filmu Robinson warszawski. Autorem pomysłu na film był Czesław Miłosz, który oparł go na rozmowach z pianistą Władysławem Szpilmanem i jego relacji z ukrywania się w ruinach Warszawy w czasie II wojny światowej. Oryginalność pomysłu zasadzała się na samotności człowieka w pejzażu ruin wielkiego miasta. W umowie na scenariusz, podpisanej w 1945 r. wspólnie z Jerzym Andrzejewskim, Miłosz był wymieniony jako współautor. W roku 1945 scenariusz został poddany licznym przeróbkom, które zdruzgotały Miłosza. W międzyczasie poeta podpisał umowę jako urzędnik dyplomacji PRL-u w Ameryce. Prace nad Robinsonem zostały zawieszone do wiosny roku 1948. Jerzy Zarzycki i Andrzejewski napisali nowy scenariusz, stosując się do zaleceń partii komunistycznej, o czym Miłosz w ogóle nie wiedział. Robinson warszawski miał premierę w 1949 r. i został zmiażdżony przez krytykę. Film, który w istocie był obrazem propagandowym, wszedł na ekrany w roku 1950. Nazwisko Andrzejewskiego zostało oczywiście włączone do napisów końcowych, zaś udział Miłosza został całkowicie pominięty.
The article tells the history of the film entitled Robinson of Warsaw. Czesław Miłosz conceived the story inspired by conversations with pianist Władysław Szpilman who was hiding in the ruins of Warsaw during the World War II. The original idea of the film was a lonely man amidst a landscape of ruins. In the screenplay contract signed in 1945 with Andrzejewski, Miłosz features as a co-author. In 1945 the screenplay underwent a number of changes which devastated Miłosz, who in the meantime signed a contract as a Foreign Office employee. Works on Robinson were suspended until the spring of 1948. Zarzycki and Andrzejewski wrote a new screenplay including the communist party recommendations. Miłosz was not aware of any of it. Robinson of Warsaw premiered in 1949. It was hit by crushing criticism. The movie, which was in fact a propaganda film, was screened in 1950. Andrzejewski’s name was included in the film credits without mentioning the contribution by Miłosz.

Catholic priest in modern world
Opis:
Constantine the Emperor was the head of the religions and cults approved by the Roman Empire’s law. Thanks to him the persecutions of the Christians came to a halt (the Edict of Milan from the year 313 AD). To standardize the date of Easter and the text of the Creed in the Roman Catholic Church the Emperor convened in the year 325 AD the first in the Christianity’s history council called the First Council of Nicaea. The title character of the poem is a priest who is suffering from being torn apart due to the doubts about faith. The author of the work uses the poetical language to convey the truths of the faith. The deliberations that God calls the ‘undeserving’ Constantine to fulfil the great mission lead the subject to reflections on the destiny of us all.

The article aims at describing the forms of the theme of the Vistula River in Czesław Miłosz’s poetry. For this purpose, it transpires to be necessary to take account of Miłosz’s biographical conditions and consider the attitude of the writer towards the poetic tradition of the theme. Above all, the article is an attempt to reflect on its symbolic meanings and metaphysical functions. Reading poems or fragments of poems dedicated to the Vistula River (from the 40s and 50s) enables the development of the following thesis: the presence of this theme serves as means to identify the specificity of Polish history and diagnose the essence of Polish historical fate.

Artykuł stanowi interpretację przemiany twórczości i osobowości Czesława Miłosza zgodnie z zaproponowanym przez Harolda Blooma modelem agonu poetyckiego efeba z prekursorem. Autor polemizuje z wcześniejszymi ujęciami twórczości Miłosza w tym duchu – sugerującymi, że najważniejszym nauczycielem poety był Adam Mickiewicz. Tymczasem uważna analiza wspomnień i deklaracji ideowych autora Rodzinnej Europy dowodzi, że źródłowy wpływ, który zdecydował o przebiegu całej dalszej ewolucji Miłosza, wywarł na niego katecheta, ksiądz Leopold Chomski, inne zaś figury mistrzowskie w twórczości poety to przekształcenia obrazu tego pierwotnego nauczyciela.
The article interprets the changes in works and personality of Czesław Miłosz, in accordance with Harold Blooms model of agon between the poetic ephebe and his precursor. I pick up a discussion with the ealier Bloomian takes on Miłosz, which suggest that his most important teacher was Adam Mickiewicz. A careful analysis of Miłosz’s memoirs and ideologicaldeclarations proves that the original influence, decisive on Miłosz’s whole future evolution, came from a catechist, Rev. Leopold Chomski, white other master figures in poet’s works were just remoulding the original teacher’s image.

The article is dedicated to Czesław Miłosz's essay Tiger, analysing the heterodox discourses that it contains, especially the political gnosis. The author analyses the connections between such discourses and the notions of deep crisis of European culture, showing also how Miłosz solved the dialectic argument with his friend Tadeusz Juliusz Kroński, a Hegelian philosopher. Miłosz's solution enabled him to give up both Gnostic catastrophism and a temptation of hermetic utopia by Kroński. Towards the end of the essay the history of mankind regains its value and it is being reintegrated as a history of Salvation.
