Artykuł zawiera interpretacje utworów poetyckich Marty Podgórnik z ostatnich lat, przede wszystkim zebranych w tomie Mordercze ballady (opublikowanym w roku 2018). Analizy twórczości śląskiej poetki prowadzą ku rozpoznaniu jej rozmaitych aspektów, tematów, wizji oraz zawartych w niej nawiązań intertekstualnych. Podgórnik kreuje portrety kobiet indywidualistek, funkcjonujących poza głównymi dyskursami: patriarchalnym i feministycznym, natomiast zanurzonych w przestrzeni komunikacji zdominowanej przez kulturę masową. Najważniejszy w jej artystycznych wyborach okazuje się przepełniony buntem poetycki język, służący przekazywaniu wszelkich, najbardziej nawet bolesnych doświadczeń. Ta szczególna liryczna dykcja umożliwia poetce wykorzystywanie strategii, którą można nazwać „produkcją obecności”, pełną międzytekstowych odniesień, czerpanych głównie z tekstów, tematów i motywów kultury (także masowej).
The article contains interpretations of poetry written by Marta Podgórnik during last years, especially poems placed in her volume titled Mordercze ballady [“Tender homicides”] (published in 2018). This analysis of Silesian writer’s output lead to recognitions of aspects, themes, images and intertextual connections it includes. Podgórnik creates pictures of individualistic women who must exist out of main discourses: patriarchal and feministic, but have to live in mass-culture reality. But the most important in this poetry is language used for poetic but subversive descriptions of painful experiences. This lyric faculty of speech allows Podgórnik to use a specific strategy that may be called “produce of presence”, seeming full of intertextual references, taken frequently from literary tradition and mass-culture texts, motifs and themes.

This article is built on the premise that the topos has become a potent unit of cultural memory, an image that stores a wealth of often vague, buried or forgotten ideas. Its contents, like those of literature, tend to become extraordinarily condensed and confl ated; in consequence, some topoi (in particular the Holocaust topos) defy conventional tools of understanding and analysis. A solution to this problem can be found in an approach which broadens the scope of the sources of the Holocaust to include pop culture; gives up the rigid classifi cation of topoi, based on ‘hard’, documentary evidence; and, draws on a conceptual frame that connects the topos with the mechanisms of remembrance. A practical application of this approach is offered here in a series of readings of selected passages from Marcin Pilis’s novel The Meadow of the Dead (Łąka umarłych), Zygmunt Miłoszewski’s crime story A Grain of Truth (Ziarno prawdy), Marcin Wolski’s alternate history novel Wallenrod, Justyna Wydra’s war romance The SS-man and a Jewess (Esesman i Żydówka), Krzysztof Zajas’s thriller Oszpicyn [local Yiddish: Auschwitz] as well as some poems by Jacek Podsiadło from his volume The Breguet Overcoil (Włos Bregueta).

The article describes Victor Erofeyev’s essay Love for stupidity, in which the Russianpostmodernist comes up with an uncompromising objection to the mass culture. The defence of high literature as an existential signpost leading to timeless values  is placed by the author in the socio-political context of modernization challenges faced by contemporaryRussia. Alongside highlighting this less familiar theme of Erofeyev’s works the analysis aims at drawing attention to the aporias in the writer’s considerations as well as confronting the essay with another sketches devoted to the changes of literary life in the conditions of the consumer society.

Kategoria „religii przyszłości”, która była przedmiotem dociekań filozoficznych Maurycego Straszewskiego, obecna jest także we współczesnym dyskursie filozoficznym, teologicznym czy antropologicznym. Straszewski podkreślał, że kultura, postęp naukowy, historia filozofii nierozerwalnie związane są z historią religii i teologią. Akcentował istotę potrzeb religijnych dla samego powstania systemów dogmatycznych, jak i filozofii. Współcześnie mamy do czynienia z jednej strony z sekularyzacją, z drugiej ze swoistą rewitalizacją religii. Obecny powrót religijności różni się od wcześniejszych globalnym zasięgiem i jego oryginalnymi postaciami, a także wiąże się z swoistego rodzaju „zawieszeniem” dotychczasowych wyznaczników religii, takich jak dogmat, autorytet, kult, ortodoksja.
The category of ‘religion of the future’, which was the subject of Maurycy Straszewski’s philosophical inquiries, is also present in contemporary philosophical, theological or anthropological discourse. Straszewski emphasised that culture, scientific progress and the history of philosophy are inextricably linked to the history of religion and theology. He emphasised the importance of religious needs for the very emergence of dogmatic systems as well as philosophy. Nowadays, we deal with secularisation, on the one hand, and a kind of revitalisation of religion, on the other. The current revival of religiosity differs from earlier ones in its global scope and its original forms, and also involves a kind of ‘suspension’ of the previous determinants of religion, such as dogma, authority, cult, orthodoxy.

‘Russkiy malchik’ – the hero of contemporary Russian literatureThe aim of this article is to present certain processes in contemporary Russian literature and the new hero of this literature. Russia literature after the collapse of the Soviet Union changed its position in the post-soviet culture. This was the result of cultural changes in this area. Some Russian critics noticed that a crisis in Russian literature had started at the beginning of the 90’s. Although Russian literature moved from the centre to the periphery of culture, this is, however, not crisis literature. It is literature that exists in times of crisis and with a new point of view describing the surrounding world. ‘Russkiy malchik’ – the new hero of Russian literature searches for his identity in a world that has changed unpredictably. He appears in the novels and dramas of present day Russian writers: postmodernist Victor Pelevin, realist Zahkar Prilepin and sentimentalist Evgeniy Grishkovec. These writers present different styles, generations and literary genres but their heroes are prone to the same problem: How to exist in a reality that they do not understand or accept.

Currently, man feels called to create his unique lifestyle, to pursue his humanity free from external religious, social, or political influences. Today’s somatic turn in culture means that the body is seen as the source of all values. This turn is directed not so much at the outer form of the body but our inner experience and spirituality. Secularization encourages us to consider ourselves, our happiness, in more earthly and carnal terms with almost religious adoration.

The ‘National Collections of Contemporary Art’ Programme run by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (MKiDN) in 2011–2019 constituted the most important since 1989 financing scheme for purchasing works of contemporary art to create and develop museum collections. Almost PLN 57 million from the MKiDN budget were allocated by means of a competition to purchasing works for such institutions as the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (MSN), Museum of Art in Lodz (MSŁ), Wroclaw Contemporary Museum (MNW), Museum of Contemporary Art in Cracow (MOCAK), or the Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko (CRP). The programme in question and the one called ‘Signs of the Times’ that had preceded it were to fulfil the following overall goal: to create and develop contemporary art collections meant for the already existing museums in Poland, but particularly for newly-established autonomous museums of the 20th and 21st century. The analysis of respective editions of the programmes and financing of museums as part of their implementation confirms that the genuine purpose of the Ministry’s ‘National Contemporary Art Collections’ Programme has been fulfilled.
Program MKiDN „Narodowe kolekcje sztuki współczesnej” realizowany w latach 2011 –2019 stanowił kluczowe pod względem zakupów dzieł sztuki współczesnej, systemowe rozwiązania finansowania tworzenia i rozwoju kolekcji muzealnych po roku 1989. Blisko 57 mln zł z budżetu MKiDN przeznaczone zostało – w drodze systemu konkursowego – na zakup prac do takich instytucji jak: Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Warszawie (MSN), Muzeum Sztuki w Łodzi (MSŁ), Muzeum Współczesne we Wrocławiu (MWW), Muzeum Sztuki Współczesnej w Krakowie (MOCAK) i Centrum Rzeźby Polskiej w Orońsku (CRP). Niniejszy program i poprzedzający go pt. „Znaki Czasu” realizować miały naczelny cel – tworzenie i rozwój międzynarodowych kolekcji sztuki współczesnej, z przeznaczeniem do już istniejących w Polsce, a zwłaszcza do nowopowstałych autonomicznych muzeów XX i XXI wieku. Analiza poszczególnych edycji programów i finansowania muzeów w ich zakresie wskazuje na spełnienia zakładanej pierwotnie funkcji ministerialnego programu „Narodowe kolekcje sztuki współczesnej”.

The ‘National Collections of Contemporary Art’ Programme of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage constitutes an interesting case of a systemic solution to the question of financing museum collections’ purchases. Its implementation demonstrated changeability of action (both from the point of view of the applicants, and Programme’s evaluators and organizer), while at the same time the genuine assumptions were maintained, namely the support provided to the major museums, most often newly established, whose statutory goal would be and is collecting contemporary art. Turning points in the Programme, as well as the observation of applicants’ strategies while the Programme functioned served as the basis for the Programme’s evaluation, and led to replacing it with the ‘National Collections of Contemporary Art’ Programme, these, however, demonstrated failures in consistency, in particular without pointing to the final systemic solution in this respect.

Contemporary culture can be described as provisional and temporary. A provisional culture is closely bound with such ideologies as secularism, individualism, relativism, practical materialism, hedonism and consumerism. These dominant cultural paradigms threaten the Christian understanding of family, hindering its comprehensive development and its ability to fulfil its basic objectives such as mutual welfare of the spouses or giving birth to and raising offspring. A provisional culture poses a threat and a great challenge for the family. Taking into account the fact that each culture is an expression of the human spirit and an environment for building identity and interpersonal relations, a Christian family must not ignore the problems of the contemporary world, but rather undertake a dialogue with a provisional culture aimed at presenting and promoting the Christian model of family, being the first school of faith, preaching and defending a culture of life.
Współczesną kulturę można określić mianem prowizorycznej lub tymczasowej. Kultura prowizoryczności ściśle łączy się z prądami ideowymi: sekularyzmem, indywidualizmem, relatywizmem, materializmem praktycznym, hedonizmem i konsumpcjonizmem. Zarysowane dominanty kulturowe godzą w chrześcijańskie rozumienie rodziny, uniemożliwiając jej wszechstronny rozwój i realizację podstawowych celów, jakimi są wzajemne dobro małżonków oraz zrodzenie i wychowanie potomstwa. Kultura prowizoryczności zagraża rodzinie i stanowi dla niej wielkie wyzwanie. W związku z tym, że każda kultura jest wyrazem ludzkiego ducha i środowiskiem budowania tożsamości i relacji międzyludzkich, rodzina chrześcijańska nie może zamknąć się na problemy współczesności, lecz powinna podjąć z kulturą prowizoryczności pewną formę dialogu, którego wyznacznikami są następujące zadania: ukazywać i promować chrześcijański model rodziny, być pierwszą szkołą wiary, głosić i bronić kultury życia.

The scientific discipline of archeology has gone through various stages of its development and improvement of research methods. First, it was combined with ancient history and the history of art. In the mid-nineteenth century, the base of its chronology was on biblical events. Modernist archeology of the twentieth century focused on classifying monuments and reconstructing cultural processes. In the second half of the twentieth century, archeology inspired other disciplines of culture and science to “stratigraphically” look at their own history. In this way, the stratification of scientific thought (archeology of knowledge), the history of photography (archeology of photography), and the media (archeology of media) began to be analyzed. Archeology has become a cognitive metaphor in contemporary culture. Lack of knowledge of the theoretical and methodological achievements worked out by archaeologists may, after some time, lead to the trivialization and petrification of the archaeological metaphor, although today it still seems fresh and innovative for “archeology of media,” “archeology of photography,” or “archeology of modernism.”

The author discusses the relationship between art and the body, as exemplified by the similarities and differences in the works of: two Japanese artists, Matsui Chie (b. 1960) and Higashikage Tomohiro (b. 1978); and the Polish artist, Mirosław Bałka (b. 1958). These examples are referred to in the context of a unique project recently conducted in Japan — the Tatsuno Art Project 2013. Held with the support of the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan, the project aims to present contemporary art to people from across Japan and around the globe, and to capitalize on the region’s unique cultural heritage, creating opportunities for people to communicate with local residents and making Tatsuno a more dynamic and popular place to visit. This paper considers various connections between art and the body by focusing on a selection of works included in the Tatsuno Art Project 2013: Arts and Memories. Known in past centuries as the ‘little Kyoto’ of Harima Province, Tatsuno is an atmospheric old castle town. It is mild and relatively warm all year round, with the climate of the nearby Seto Inland Sea region, said to be similar to that of the Mediterranean. Thanks to the support of numerous people, the organizers were able to hold the 2013 event which represented the culmination of their efforts over the past few years, being the largest ever in terms of scale with nine invited artists, eleven other participating artists, and one contemporary musician, for a total of 21 creators contributing works. With new spaces added to create a total of 16 venues, the community‑wide project truly achieved its goal of presenting the ‘historic castle town as a museum’. The project curators were also able to strengthen Tatsuno’s international ties by inviting artists from France and Poland to take part, as well as Japanese artists residing in the UK and Spain.

The article concerns contemporary Polish theatre, and particularly the creativity of young directors who are in their thirties: Monika Pęcikiewicz, Monika Strzępka and Wiktor Rubin who give up the traditional theatre and mingle with mass and popular culture. The article also focuses on the problem of reception, because theatrical performances, distancing themselves from the traditional ones, still cause emotional reactions of conservative specta-tors who often feel shocked and offended by such theatre. Such performances ignore the hegemony of dramatical text – they deconstruct cause and effect order of narration, con-front text with contemporary context, they are incoherent; they use new media to contact with a spectator by acting that is based on quoting a character and constant balancing be-tween theatrical performance and private life.

A context for such analysis is, on the one hand, the Christian visual tradition and the European tradition of rhetoric, and on the other hand – the contemporary theory of advertisement, due to which the advertising is considered a realm of art and a subject to scientific research, held by both visual and cultural studies. The analysed materials are announcements published in Polish press and on billboards in Poland between the year 2009 and 2013. On that basis one can describe a certain tension which appears when a religious content is confronted with a function of an advertisement in the social space. Discussion about the rhetorical effectiveness of the examples given clears the way for concluding whether this tension intensifies or makes impossible a persuasive effectiveness of “advertising” the religious essence. Analysis of the examples leads to differentiating between two main strategies of authors of the “religious advertisements.” The first one is a missionary strategy which turns to each and every member of the society, trying to inspire a reflection on human values, and its contents equalises Christianity with a widely understood existential attitude. The other one resembles most of the contemporary advertisements, which aim at dictating standards and ideas, and its persuasive effectiveness seems questionable due to the rhetorical contradictions in which it is involved.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to provide basic information on the main components of book culture in Slovakia in the first decades of the 21st century. The article starts with a brief overview of the existing volumes on the topic of contemporary book culture in Slovakia. In core, the paper analyses state support for book publishing, structure of publishers, book market, reading, libraries and book awards. Empirical data comes from available official documents and statistics.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie podstawowych informacji na temat głównych komponentów kultury książki na Słowacji w pierwszych dekadach XXI wieku oraz stanu, w jakim się znajdują. Artykuł zaczyna się od krótkiego przeglądu literatura przedmiotu, następnie ukazana została rola państwa, które wspiera liczne inicjatywy wydawnicze, ruch wydawniczy, rynek książki, czytelnictwo, biblioteki i nagrody związane z książką i literaturą. Dane pochodzą z dostępnych oficjalnych dokumentów i statystyk.

Opis:
The article is a reflection on the symbols through which the modern experience of cultural belonging is expressed and on the motivations behind their contestation. Examples of selected themes that Marcin Świetlicki and Barbara Gruszka-Zych explore in their writing are used to examine the poetic quest to overcome feelings of alienation in one’s own cultural milieu. In spite of the differences between the two poets, both address the problems facing the contemporary consciousness of Western man, split between the desire to complete the process of deconstructing his own universal “identifying signs” and the need to creatively explore the process of symbolization itself. The issue of “internal acculturation,” as a particular case within the topic of acculturation as a whole, is also correlated to examples drawn from Francophone poetry.
