Opis:
Recent research on English as a Lingua Franca (henceforth ELF) has indicated that ELF can be analyzed in accordance with the main principles of the Construction Grammar approach (Pirc 2013). Admittedly, while the majority of studies have been devoted to its creative and unpredictable character, little attention has been paid to how ELF can be conceptualized if its emergent elements are treated as constructions. Thus, the present paper conducts a corpus- based study on the Question Tag Construction (henceforth the QTxC) in ELF with a view to indicating in what way the QTxC can be determined. With the support of the VOICE and BNC corpora, the performed analysis has shown that the analyzed realizations of the QTxC in ELF, while having formal properties that deviate from the norms of English, can also be characterized as exhibiting various sub-types of the prototypical function of the QTxC.

Opis:
The author analyses prepositional constructions along the lines of Goldberg’s cognitive construction grammar. The paper starts with a discussion of Goldberg’s definition of a construction and the main theoretical assumptions of her approach. The semantic analysis of a construction is based on its contextual meaning as related to the speech event and then subsequently related to its conceptual frame, that is, its predicate-argument structure. Such an analysis of prepositional constructions allows a much wider scope of a construction than has been so far considered. It also allows the analyst to identify an abundance of a series of phrasemes which have not been accounted for even when analysing a single particular preposition (the Polish preposition ‘w’: ‘in’) in dictionaries or the studies of prepositions.

With his publications on German grammar, on verb valency and on contrastive linguistics, Ulrich Engel has had a great impact on international German linguistics. It is less well known that his work has also influenced other sub-disciplines of linguistics, which still benefit from it today. Dependential approaches now play a central role in machine syntax analysis, and Engel’s work has also left its mark on the development of machine translation systems. The development of language resources in the form of “tree banks” can fall back on Engel’s grammar conception, and there are also clear references to the newly flourishing construction grammar. In this article, these lesser-known influences of Engel’s work on other areas are presented and their ongoing relevance is acknowledged.

Opis:
Na przykładzie opisu wybranych typów konstrukcji powtórzeniowych polszczyzny i kilku innych języków pokazano istotne różnice w efektach zastosowania obu podejść badawczych.
In this article, the two linguistic approaches are confronted: the first is Construction Grammar, which has been intensively developed in recent years, mainly in cognitive linguistics, and is represented by numerous researchers of Polish, European, and world linguistics; the second is the less known, author’s methodological proposal by Andrzej Bogusławski (the so-called Operational Grammar, presented in the article Bogusławski 1978). On the example of the description of selected types of repetitive constructions (of Polish and several other languages), significant differences in the effects of applying both research approaches are shown. The main thesis is the claim that, in contrast to the fashionable and willingly practiced CG, the Polish linguist’s methodological proposal (OG), based on the fundamental idea of proportionality in language, does give tools to effectively distinguish amongst repetitive constructs: 1) the real operational units of a given language; 2) predictable and generally comprehensible constructs with tautologically filled items (intended essentially for different elements); and 3) repetitions resulting from more general, perhaps supra-linguistic rules of speech activity. Despite the diversity of the many currents of CG, it seems that it does not provide the tools to properly separate these three essentially different types of textual phenomena (and at least this is not indicated by the practice of research on repetitions influenced by CG).

Opis:
The issue of the relation between AI and human mind has been riddling the scientific world since ages. Being the mother lode of research, AI can be scrutinised from a plethora of perspectives. One of them is a linguistic perspective, which encompasses AI’s capability to understand language. Having been an innate and exclusive faculty of human mind, language is now manifested in a countless number of ways, transcending beyond the human-only production. There are applications that can not only understand what is meant by an utterance, but also engage in a quasi-humane discourse. The manner of their operating is perfectly organised and can be accounted for by incorporating linguistic theories. The main theory used in this article is Fluid Construction Grammar, which has been developed by Luc Steels. It is concerned with parsing and segmentation of any utterance – two processes that are pivotal in AI’s understanding and production of language. This theory, in addition with five main facets of languages (phonological, morphological, semantic, syntactic and pragmatic) provides a valuable insight into the discrepancies between natural and artificial perception of language. Though there are similarities between them, the article shall conclude with what makes two adjacent capabilities different. The aim of this paper is to display the mechanisms of AI natural language processors with the aid of contemporary linguistic theories, and present possible issues which may ensue from using artificial language-recognising systems.

The paper compares the usage of singular they with two morphologically similar constructions in British and American English. The constructions in question are lose one’s life and lose one’s job. The results obtained suggest that singular they, at least used with the two constructions in focus of this work, seems to be more widely used in the American variety of English than in the British variety. An additional aim of this work is to present and discuss some practical aspects of working with mega-corpora. The work shows how and where quantitative language studies need to be accompanied by manual and qualitative investigations. The corpora used in this work are the British National Corpus (BNC) and the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA).

Opis:
The object of the contribution is the action-type-related, synonymous and antonymous variance of the idioms of the type “in der Klemme sein”, which is thematized against the background of the traditional phraseological and construction-grammatical approaches in phraseology. The idioms are compiled in their macroparadigms and examined with regard to the formation mechanisms (construction patterns/templates) of the action type related variants, synonymous and antonymous pairs. The goal of the paper is to identify the design patterns (construction patterns, templates) present within the macro paradigms. The conceptualizations and descriptive entities of traditional phraseology underlying the paper: micro- and macroparadigms, character fields, model formations/phraseotemplates, synonymous and antonymous pairs, synonymous phraseological series appear compatible with the tools of construction grammar, in particular with the entities of construction and construction pattern and the mechanism of coining. Thanks to the consideration of the language as a whole (language system in its entirety) and the orientation towards cross-level (lexis-syntax-semantics) and at the same time systematic changes, construction grammar provides a favorable theoretical framework for the description of the paradigmatically conditioned variance of idioms.

Constructionist approaches to language make use of form-meaning pairings, called constructions, to capture all linguistic knowledge that is necessary for comprehending and producing natural language expressions. Language processing consists then in combining the constructions of a grammar in such a way that they solve a given language comprehension or production problem. Finding such an adequate sequence of constructions constitutes a search problem that is combinatorial in nature and becomes intractable as grammars increase in size. In this paper, we introduce a neural methodology for learning heuristics that substantially optimise the search processes involved in constructional language processing. We validate the methodology in a case study for the CLEVR benchmark dataset. We show that our novel methodology outperforms state-of-the-art techniques in terms of size of the search space and time of computation, most markedly in the production direction. The results reported on in this paper have the potential to overcome the major efficiency obstacle that hinders current efforts in learning large-scale construction grammars, thereby contributing to the development of scalable constructional language processing systems.

This paper uses the terminology of Construction Grammar (Goldberg 1996; 2006) and a corpus-based method to investigate a pair of semantically similar constructions and the lexemes that occur in both of them. The method, referred to as distinctive-collexeme analysis (Gries and Stefanowitsch 2004a), seeks to identify lexemes that exhibit a strong preference for one construction as opposed to another: in other words, to uncover subtle distributional differences between two semantically or functionally near-equivalent constructions. On the basis of the case study dealing with the on the brink of- noun construction versus the on the verge of- noun construction, the paper shows that there are lexemes that prefer one of the investigated patterns over the other. Moreover, the results of the distinctive-collexeme analysis reveal that the frame-constructional semantics is a relevant factor in the choice between these two patterns.

The paper aims to find out which theoretical framework, grammaticalization theory or construction grammar, is better suited to account for mechanisms underlying the emergence of Old French reciprocal string ‘se Verb li uns l’autre’. The data to conduct the analysis have been retrieved from large Latin (Perseus and Vulgate) and Old French (DECT and CoRPTeF) corpora. First, diachronic layers are characterized, encompassing Latin reiterated clusters, late Latin ‘unus alterum’, early French bipartite markers, and the very ‘se Verb li uns l’autre’. Then, their changes are claimed to have come about in response to the evolving system-defining structural properties, as outlined in Natural Morphology. As a result, instead of being couched in terms of more / less grammatical, the reconstruction of how particular reciprocal structures came into being is more felicitous if they are treated as full-fledged form-meaning pairs. Indeed, they exhibit significant variation along two clines: schematic – substantive and complex - atomic. As for further stages of its evolution, ‘se Verb li uns l’autre’ is shown to have become different from its forerunners in that it had reached a discursively more subjective status.

Aspects of Ferdinand de Saussure’s linguistic theorizing that have exerted a profound influence on the development of modern linguistics include his view on the relation between form and meaning/function. Indeed, the very relation underlies his concept of linguistic sign. The signifying-signified dichotomy appears to be a point of departure for a number of current theoretical paradigms. This paper attempts to point to the fact that de Saussure’s conception of the link between form and function has inspired the treatment of this relation in two modern approaches: generative grammar and construction grammar. It seems that the notion of phase, crucial to the derivational mechanism in the most recent version of Chomsky’s (1995, 2001, 2008) generative grammar, i.e. the Minimalist Program, and the concept of construction in Goldberg’s (1995, 2003, 2006) construction grammar elaborate on de Saussure’s perspective on form and meaning/function. Obviously, both modern approaches go beyond de Saussure’s conception and differ from one another due to distinct theoretical and methodological assumptions.

Opis:
Aiming to illustrate how the relationship between the language system and its actualisations in usage is envisaged in contemporary linguistic models that draw from and modify de Saussure’s idea of langue and parole, the paper presents the vision of this relationship in Construction Grammar (a model developed in various variants by C.J. Fillmore, A. Goldberg, P. Kay, M. Fried and others), belonging to the widelyunderstood cognitive trend in linguistics. The focus is on the distinction between the concept of construction, a conventionalised pairing of form and meaning/function, being an element of the system, and the concept of construct, a real utterance used in communication, being an actualisation of many constructions. Construction Grammar is a usage-based model, assuming that language system generalisations emerge from frequent usage. Therefore, the article also discusses the phenomenon of coercion, i.e. “stretching” constructions to combine with “unfitting” lexemes, seen not as a breach of the system but as one of the mechanisms of its creative use to construct new meanings, which may lead to changes in constructions, to the emergence of new ones, and hence to the modification of the system.

The paper traces the evolution of textual properties of the Old French bipartite reciprocal marker li uns l’autre originating from Latin unus alterum. The data for carrying out the analysis were retrieved mainly from two corpora: the ARTFL Textes de Français Ancien and the Perseus Digital Library (perseus.tufts.edu). The markers documented at various stages of the history are demonstrated to have been different from each other mainly as far as two criteria are concerned: the type and the selection of antecedents. Unlike in classical and late Latin, where unus alterum used to be obligatorily co-indexed, Old French li uns l’autre was occasionally able to do away with antecedents (the li uns Nsing l’autre construction). The conclusions revolve around the adequacy of the Government and Binding theory: reciprocal markers in non-configurational languages are not always amenable to the analysis conducted in terms of this theoretical framework. Instead, it is claimed that the problem is more adequately grasped if the concept of construction, i.e. form-meaning pair, is applied.

The article attempts to demonstrate how concordance lines of a linguistic corpus can be useful in assignments on the descriptive grammar of english, which are administered on-line via the Ms Teams application of teaching and learning due to the Sars-CoV-2 pandemic. Grammatical expressions are approached as constructions abstracted from situated instances of language use in view of Langacker’s “symbolic principle”, which is consistent with the “usage-based principle” and the encyclopedic nature of meaning. Accordingly, words are points of access to extensive depositories of knowledge. Linguistic corpora can provide vast repositories of patterns of use of particular key words constituting various linguistic constructions. The paper focuses on distinguishing between English count nouns and mass nouns represented by the same lexical form, called a “target”, such as worry, dinner, and work, and exposes worry and work as verbs in alternative contexts of use cited from concordance lines of the BNC. The term work is also shown as a key word whose lexical category, noun or verb, is determined on the basis of other elements, referred to as “triggers” in the context of occurrence.
