Opis:
A question is posed whether and to what extent the etymology of a word is reflected in its contemporary connotation. An analysis is presented of a few terms referring to Stones (kamień ‘stone’, skała ‘rock’, głaz ‘boulder’). A juxtaposition of their etymology and connotation has led to the conclusions sketched below. (1) Connotation may constitute a continuation of features distinguished in etymological analysis (such is the case with the features of durability, hardness and the weight of a stone). (2) Certain features accepted by etymologists as primary are linguistically attested only in a rudimentary or partial way (e.g. the connection between a stone and life or eternity). (3) Extra-etymological documentation leads one to acknowledge the existence of new connotative features. (4) Particular semantic features may disappear in the meaning of a term but be preserved in that of another (e.g. the feature of sharpness, which disappears in the semantics of kamień ‘stone’ but dominates in the connotation of skała ‘rock’). A hypothesis can be formulated that inquiries into the etymology of a word coupled with its contemporary connotations may serve as a verification of the former. The reverse, however, is not true: if a well-motivated feature established in etymological analysis lacks contemporary attestation, the fact does not disprove the etymology.

On the other hand, when shall we say that the occurrence A in B is essential? We shall do it, if we can transform B into B' changing no <> properties of B. Let us say it more precisely. Let us assume - as concerns expressions x, y, x' and y' - that: (a) x occurs in y; (b) the only structural difference between y and y' is that x does not occur in y', or x' occurs in y instead of x. Then: x occurs in y inessentially-with-respect-to-w of y, iff y' is the same as y with respect to p. Correspondingly: x occurs in y essentially-with-respect-to-w of y, iff y' is different as y with respect to p. The occurrence x in y may be essential or inessential with respect to syntactic, semantic or pragmatic properties of y. In my paper, I discuss a variety of detailed concepts of the (in)essential occurrence of expressions in another expressions with respect to semantic properties of these expressions, i.e. with respect to semantic category, logical value, denotation and connotation. I also discuss some philosophical and methodological implications of presented solutions of the problem.

Opis:
The paper seeks to present a tentative list of syntactic schemes, according to which a certain type of nominal groups in Latin is constructed. These are groups with constitutive elements in the form of nominal lexems, having connotative properties. Connotation here is understood as a systematic property of lexems which consists in the fact that they open “empty places” (positions) to be filled in the text by definite (subordinate to them) elements called supplements. Like in other languages, the connotative properties in Latin is depicted by three types of nominal lexems. These are nouns derived from verbs, i.e. above all nomina actionis (e.g. reading – what?, by whom?) and nomina agentis (e.g. reader – of what?) and nouns derived from adjectives, i.e. first of all nomina essendi (e.g. lenght – of what?). The third type is composed of some nouns derivationally non-motivated. We find here among other things “relational” names of persons (e.g. son – whose?) or names of the parts of a certain whole (e.g. shore – of what?). The nominal lexems mentioned here may open one, two, three, or even four “empty places.” In the text they are filled with supplements in the form of nouns in the dependent cases, propositional phrases, constructions accusativus cum infinitivo, or even the whole sentences. The list contains ten syntactic schemes which are a symbolical inscription of the types of syntactic structures carried out in the texts by the Latin nominal groups. Such kind of schemes may be supplemented by a description of nominal groups in Latin, as the connotation of nominal lexems as a mechanism of making groups has not been, as it seems, taken into consideration up to now.

Functional class (so called “part of speech”) assignment as a kind of meaning-bound word syntactic informationThe traditional division of the lexicon into parts of speech which seems to satisfy the requirements of a syntactic description, on the one hand, and a word formation description, on the other hand, cannot be looked upon as a result of a strict classification covering the totality of the lexicon and being based on a coherent set of criteria. Making the criteria more precise or correcting them is an issue of extreme importance and urgency in the work on the theory of language. Such achievements can help solve many other problems, in particular, syntactic ones. The article presents a scheme of several preliminary steps of an amelioration program (a scheme which has been improved compared to the author’s earlier attempts going in the same direction). The program is based on combinability characteristics of words, i.e. on those properties that are responsible for the tasks to be accomplished by a given class of expressions in making up a higher order unit, i.e. a syntagm (the author emphasizes this point: it is syntagm rather than sentence which is the category the recommended approach is focusing on), and that, importantly, determine the limits of syntactic rules, i.e. the ins and outs of the rules (the limits concerning the overall stock of words).

The article identifies not only hypernyms of the colour red but also non-basic names and hyponyms that refer to the prototypical exemplars of fire and blood. In total, the author analysed 43 primary and secondary names for the colour red exemplified mainly by adjectives and verbs. The collected names of the colour have been assigned to two main thematic circles, i.e. nature (atmospheric phenomena, ocean and its inhabitants) and human being (body, clothes).

The paper is a presentation of part of research on evaluative connotations of onymic idioms in a contrastive perspective. In the present paper the evaluative connotations of English and Italian evaluative anthroponymic idioms are discussed with a special focus on their cross-linguistic equivalence. The research material consists of two corpora of English and Italian units excerpted from mono- and bilingual lexicographic works. The mechanisms of evaluation exploited in English and Italian phraseological units are discussed. The typology of equivalents, covering various types, such as full equivalents, partial equivalents, equivalents with re-created anthroponyms, non-phraseological equivalents, pseudo-equivalents, is presented and exemplified.

The cultural connotation is the basic lingua-cultural concept. It links two semiotic systems – language and culture as the forms of consciousness. It is the means of storage and of the transmission of culture into the language. The cultural connotation serves as an indicator of the figuratively motivated nominative units in which cultural information is localized in the associative-shaped base and is regulated by the motivating role of inner form. The cultural connotation is not only a bridge between language and cultural signs/categories, but also a tool to study them (in particular, metaphors and phraseological units). The knowledge of cultural connotations as the operating system is the necessary in the process of interpreting linguistic signs as elements of the signs of culture, and in the process of formation of the linguistic and cultural competence. The skill of understanding the cultural information, coded in a connotative way, determines the proficiency in a foreign language.

Due to social changes, but also as a result of human cognitive openness, when reconstructing the meanings of words, contemporary lexical semantics should depart from colloquiality as the only descriptive criterion. The present work proposes the formula of the open definition of meaning. Apart from the semantic-colloquial conceptual center it should also take into consideration simplified scientific knowledge about the world and human creative abilities to produce special semantic transformations of a word that are observable, for example, in artistic texts or language games. The meaning of a word, alike the structure of a concept, is relative and open.

This article is dedicated to translation as intercultural communication including the linguistic structure of a source-language text as well as its cultural elements. The aim of this paper is the exposition of the idea that semantic features (systemic and textual connotations) should be taken into consideration in translation. The outcome of translation (target-language text) should result in the semantic equivalent, which appears possible only if the translator considers both the hard core of the meaning of a word or its stylistic value and its linguistics connotations responsible for the semantic profile of its perception. The analysis of connotations is particularly useful when it is necessary to select between words having similar meaning in order to provide a proper translation. These considerations are illustrated by the analysis of two cases: the French and Italian translations of two aphorisms by Stanislaw Jerzy Lec and the Polish and English translation of the title of a novel by Francois Mauriac Le noeud de viper.

In this article I would like to present an iconographic analysis of the Migrant Mother, a photograph by Dorothea Lange, in the context of social change in the United States of the 1930s. For this purpose I use appropriate tools and the theories of Klaus Rieser, Charles Sanders Peirce, and Roland Barthes. I also read and interpret Lange’s photograph from the feminist perspective. In this article the Migrant Mother thus constitutes a fascinating object of academic inquiry, as well as a starting point for the deliberations on the harsh words of Jean Baudrillard who said: “You assume you are photographing a given thing for your own pleasure, but in fact it wants its picture taken and you are only a figure in its staging, secretly moved by the self-advertising perversion of the surrounding world (...) All metaphysics is swept away by this reversal of situation in which the subject is no longer master of the representation, but merely a function of the world's objective irony”. I try to polemicize with the words of Baudrillard, “the high priest of postmodernism” analyzing the Migrant Mother.

The aim of the paper is to consider such ethnolinguistic categories as magic, connotation, and cognitive blending as possible keys to the following questions: How is it possible that we can perfectly adopt different representations of the past and internalize them as our past? How can we reconcile different representations of the past and how is it possible that diverse representations of the past merge in one social memory? Such amalgamations of various forms of representations and diverse scales of objectification can be clarified by means of the theory of magic, by means of the law of resemblance, and the law of contiguity. Such considerations are supported here by empirical study of the construction of social memories in Teschen Silesia, which was divided between Poland and Czechoslovakia in 1920. On both sides of the new border different state institutions emerged and influenced local memories.

Giving-up ofthe purely structuralist understanding of connotations (verified by semantic and morphological derivatives, collocations, repeatable lexical oppositions, or various tests) has created a danger that semantically irrelevant components may be recognized as relevant qualities. The article proposes a rule for verification of weak connotations. Underlying the principle of internal motivation of qualities is the conviction that the meaning of a word is internally structured, while each quality, especially weak connotations, are motivated by the overall structure of meaning and are explained in the context of this structure.

The aim of the paper is to discuss culturally determined lexical constituents of phraseological units with reference to cross-linguistic equivalents. The focal issue is to analyse the relation between the special nature of the components at issue and their target language counterparts. The notion of culturally determined lexis, i.e. culture-bound words, is explained and exemplified with lexical items from various European languages. Special attention is paid to culture-bound appellative nouns and proper nouns. The presentation of the typology of cross-linguistic equivalents is followed by case studies, i.e. the analyses of selected phraseological units and their cross-linguistic equivalents. The source language expressions chosen for the analyses are the ones which contain either non-equivalent lexical items or words which have lexical equivalents, but ones of different status, connotations etc. in the target language. The case studies show that cultural determinism of the constituents of given phraseological units does not necessarily result in their zero equivalence. However, a multiaspectual analysis proves that the culture-bound character of the unit creates asymmetry on the connotative plane.
