Opis:
The aim of the paper is to assess the condition of commercial banks listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange after the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland. The consolidated results for Q1 and Q2 2020 were used focusing on selected evaluation areas such as: capital adequacy, profitability, liquidity, credit portfolio quality as well as operational efficiency. The authors concluded that as a result of the credit crunch and the retention of previously earned profits, almost every medium (except for mBank SA) and every large bank experienced an increase in capital adequacy ratios. Moreover, the profitability of the banking sector eroded in each group of banks, with the rule that ROE is higher in the group of medium and large banks compared to the small ones. With the exception of Idea Bank SA all banks during the pandemic experienced an improvement in liquidity ratios. There was reported an increase in the cost of risk, with the greatest augmentation in small banks. It is maintained that the larger the bank the lower cost of risk. In almost every institution, the risk is mitigated by an increase in the degree of coverage by provisions for impaired receivables. In small banks there was noticed a deterioration in operational efficiency. In medium and large banks, despite a sharp drop in profits and additional costs associated with the pandemic, the process of efficiency improvement was reinforced.

Opis:
The article presents the evaluation of the financial situation of commercial banks in Poland. The ratio analysis shows that the biggest variations between analyzed units were in productivity of tangible fixed assets, share of non-performing loans and overall liquidity. The financial indicators constituted the basis for the process of grouping banks into clusters of similar financial standing. The use of Ward method enabled us to differentiate five clusters. The most profitable banks belong to the first cluster, while the most productive ones are from the fourth cluster. The third cluster comprises the banks with the relatively worst financial situation.

Social and economic changes in Poland force commercial banks to face new challenges. Fierce international competition forces them to search for new ways of increasing their competitiveness. Flexibility and responsiveness to the rapidly changing needs and expectations of customers seem to be a prerequisite for main- taining the market position and building competitive advantage. This reąuires banks to develop an ability to introduce changes such as innovative financial Solutions. The widespread presence of the Internet combined with dynamie development of payment services opens new possibilities for application of innovations in mobile payments. One of the examples of applying innovative Solutions in the sector of financial services is the launching of the BLIK mobile payments system

The objective of the study is to analyse periodicity of mergers and acquisitionsof commercial banks in the Polish banking sector. The research concentrates onbehaviour of strategic investors in this type of investment operations after 1989.The findings of the analysis do not support the thesis about periodicity of mergersand acquisitions in the Polish banking sector. The only element that standsout is the financial crisis caused by subprime credits. There is no doubt that theevents of September and October 2008 are responsible for the complete lack oftransactions in the sector in that year.

Opis:
This study examines the impact credit risk management has on the profitability of commercial banks in Nigeria. The main objective of this material is to show how credit risk parameters are related to the expected performance of commercial banks in Nigeria. Using the regression analysis, relationship was drawn between credit risk parameters (which include capital adequacy ratio and non-performing loan ratio) and the profitability ratio (return on average asset, in particular) of five big Nigerian banks. Mixed research methodology was adopted in that primary data were sourced via questionnaires and secondary data were used via annual report of selected banks. Regression analysis was used to analyse the data. The conclusion drawn from the data analysis shows that there is a strong relationship between credit risk parameters and returns of the bank implying that credit risk management has a strong impact on the profitability of commercial banks in Nigeria. The study recommends that banks’ capital should be matched with their total risk exposure and if there is an imbalance, new capital requirements are necessary. Insider-related interests in loan applications should be closely monitored by the regulators to ensure continuous performance of the loan facility. Also, there should be an extant profiling of loan defaulters whether individuals or corporate entities.

Opis:
From 2008 to 2019, this research examines the effect of equity capital on the profitability of 24 Vietnamese commercial banks. The research findings indicate that, when ROAA and ROAE are used to measure the bank’s profit, the equity capital ratio (CAP) has a statistically significant positive effect on the ROAA while having a negative effect on the ROAE. Between 2013 and 2019, the CAP variable has a positive effect on the ROAA and ROAE, indicating that banks with a larger equity capital ratio achieved higher profitability. Furthermore, the deposits-to-assets ratio (DTA) and loan-loss reserves ratio (LLR) both have a negative effect on both proxies for bank profitability, although bank size (SIZE) has a negligible effect on bank profits in the majority of circumstances. Additionally, the rate of GDP growth and inflation (INF) have a beneficial effect on the bank’s profitability. The study’s objective is to present some critical policy implications for bank executives about the importance of adequate equity capital for the bank’s sustainability development.

Opis:
Aim:The objective of this paper is to make comparative analysis on operational efficiency between Chinese and Indian commercial banks (CBs).   Design / Research methods: Following the previous scholars’ study, two models with different sets of input and output variables have been used to show how efficiency scores vary with change in inputs and outputs. The efficiency scores are measured by using data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach.   Conclusions / findings: The mean technical efficiency score of Chinese CBs is always relatively higher than the corresponding score of Indian CBs in 2012-2013, respectively. In terms of technical efficiency and pure technical efficiency, the performance of foreign banks in China is always relatively lower than that of foreign banks in India.   Originality / value of the article: While many similar studies have evaluated the performance of banking industries in different countries, very few studies have evaluated the performance of banking sectors between Chinese and Indian economies. The paper would be of interest for OR scholars and practitioners in financial industry.  Implications of the research (if applicable): The next step of this study could collect more samples and use Malmquist index method to conduct further study on efficiency, efficiency changing and productivity, in order to conduct further competitive power analysis on both of banking industries of China and India.

The paper analyses the question of comparability of results that arise from application of the production and intermediation approach in practical efficiency measurement in banking. Its goal is to assess the comparability or congruence of efficiency scores yielded by these two approaches when applied in a case study of Slovak commercial banks for a period of 11 years between 2005 and 2015, using data envelopment analysis (DEA). The paper acknowledges that the chief distinction between the two approaches residing in the treatment of deposits passes into the resulting efficiency scores and troubles their comparability.

The goal of this article is to answer the question on the importance of innovations introduced by banks in Poland from the perspective of counteracting the processes related to financial exclusion of social groups. Conseąuently, selected innovative Solutions have been considered, contributing to improving the availability of banks' offer. To accomplish this goal, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the subject literature. On this basis, the most important concepts for the subject - innovation and financial exclusion - were analysed. Subseąuently, the content of the websites of selected banks operating in Poland was reviewed. Thanks to this, it was possible to identify innovations that could help to limit financial exclusion. In addition, information of what methods and tools are used by other institutions (including international ones) in the fight against financial exclusion were also used

Opis:
The paper discusses norms of conduct of „Jonathan Wild, The Great” by Henry Fielding, in the context of their primal and contemporary meanings. The quoted set of moral and praxeology norms can be regard as one of the first ethical anti-codes in processes of redefining value of „spirit of the capitalism”. Contemporary ethical and praxeology principles of commercial banks seem not very far to diverge from directives of Jonathan Wild. The banking practice shows that the disinterestedness in principle doesn’t exist and the maximization of the own profit de facto is appearing to be the goal.

Celem artykułu jest analiza determinant długoterminowych ratingów kredytowych europejskich banków komercyjnych według kryterium własności. Na podstawie badań literaturowych postawiono hipotezę: biorąc pod uwagę uwarunkowania finansowe banki publiczne otrzymują wyższe ratingi kredytowe niż prywatne instytucje. Do badania wykorzystano uogólnione panelowe modele logitowe.
The aim of the paper is the analysis of determinants of long-term credit ratings of European commercial banks according to ownership criteria. On the basis of the literature review the following hypothesis has been expressed: taking into account the financial condition the public banks receive higher credit ratings than private institutions. The ordinary logit panel data models have been used for the study. Examination of the impact of ownership on the bank’s credit rating showed that the put hypothesis cannot be uniquely verified. Public banks receive higher ratings than private institutions taking into account financial conditions, only for S & P notices. Whereas Fitch and Moody lowered their ratings to banks whose investor was the Treasury. This could have been the result of a recapitalization of financial institutions by the state to protect them against the risk of bankruptcy, however such an interpretation requires in-depth research.

Opis:
This paper analyzes the determinants of banks’ net interest margins in Honduras during the years 1998 to 2013 – a period characterized by increasing banks’ net interest margins, foreign bank participation and consolidation. In line with findings in the previous literature, we find that operating costs are the most important drivers of banks’ net interest margins. We also find that competition among banks has led to higher concentration and that funding by parent banks positively impacts foreign banks’ net interest margins. Together, these results suggest that banks, particularly foreign banks, are under pressure to consolidate and reduce operating costs in order to offer competitive interest margins. We conclude that further structural reforms and consolidation may lower banks’ net interest margins.

Warsaw Stock Exchange
COVID-19
Opis:
Research background: The paper focuses on the research of investors' decisions with regard to shares of all 12 banks listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange during the first half of 2020. It examines the behavior of a subindex reflecting bank shares' prices against the main WIG index WIG and 14 sector subindices. The authors identify groups of banks with different investors? responses. They also classify banks into separate groups on the basis of changes in the fundamental indicators describing their economic and financial performance. The study concentrates mainly on the verification of the stability of this attribution, explaining reasons for its modifications over time.    Purpose of the article: To identify the characteristics of bank clusters determining different capital market responses to their listed shares and to explain the reasons for volatility in investors' behavior within the analyzed period. Methods: The methodology of the research can be described in three areas. The first is the statistical analysis with the emphasis on the use of a quarter range to capture changes in the volatility of share prices. The second area is the clustering k-means method based on the interpolated - from quarterly to daily - measures of the bank's financial condition. This mathematical approach is a novelty in finance and economics. The last, third, area is forecasting with the use of linear regression analysis, which is the key factor in determining the abnormal rates of return. The indicated areas are combined through a generally understood correlation analysis. Findings & value added: Large retail banks have been less affected compared to medium-sized ones with relatively rich corporate portfolios. The initial market reaction reflected concern about the resistance to the crisis of poorly capitalized banks with mean liquidity buffers. Upon the announcement of government support, investors' approach to the shares of banks of differentiated economic and financial performance conformed accordingly. These findings are valuable in the long term especially from the perspective of supervision authorities' policy during external shocks. The presented study suggests designing flexible and tailor-made regulatory approach aligned with the defined bank clusters. Its value added also consists in proposing a new method of analysis, combining interpolation and automatic clustering, which has proved to be adequate for the study of a bank's financial condition based on daily frequency data. Furthermore, assuming the same length of the estimation window, a close relationship is shown between the results of clustering and the forecasts based on different measures of rates of return.

Opis:
The consequences of the global financial crisis have significantly affected the situation of the banking sector all over the world. Clearly distinguished subsectors of commercial and cooperative banks in the Polish banking sector have responded to these circumstances in different ways, due to the specificity of the banking activities conducted by them. The paper compares and assesses the impact of the global financial crisis on the commercial and cooperative banks subsectors in Poland in the key aspects of their economic position. In order to demonstrate a broader context of the discussed phenomena, the analysis covered the period from 2003 to 2012. The obtained empirical results confirm a diverse impact of the crisis on the position of each subsector. The commercial banks, being more exposed to the risks associated with the situation in the global financial markets, were affected by the first stage of the crisis earlier and to much higher extent than the cooperative banks. As the trust between banks gradually eroded and the transmission of adverse phenomena to the real sector of the economy proceeded, the crisis has affected also the cooperative banks subsector.
