Opis:
This article presents an overview of the literature regarding colonialism in the Nordic countries. Although the Nordic region is not commonly associated with colonialism, a critical look at its direct and indirect involvement in the process of European expansion has recently been developed in scholarship on the region. Direct involvement refers to the control of overseas territories (e.g. in India, modern day Ghana, and the Caribbean) and active participation in the networks of trade (including slave trade), shipping, missionary activity, etc. Indirect involvement, or colonial complicity, refers to the idea that Nordic societies produced and reproduced systems of knowledge that underpinned the colonial system and the global racial hierarchies.

Opis:
Written Exercises: Ancestral Magic and Emergent Intellectuals in Mia Couto, Lhoussain Azergui and Dorota MasłowskaThe article consists in a comparative reading of three novels: Um rio chamado tempo by Mia Couto, Le pain des corbeaux by Lhoussain Azergui and Paw królowej by Dorota Masłowska. In spite of the difference of the historical circumstances of Mozambique, Morocco and Poland, these three books meet at an intersecting point: the emergence of an intelligentsia that uses literacy and writing as an instrument to deconstruct the post-colonial concept of nation and to operate a trans-colonial renegotiation of identity. By the notion of trans-colonial, I understand the opposition against new kinds of symbolic violence that emerged after the end of the colonial period; here this new form of oppression is related to the concept of national unity – an artificial construct that leaves no place for a dualism or pluralism of cultural reality (two shores of the Zambezi river, Arab and Berber dualism in Morocco, “small homelands” in Poland). The young heroes of the novels grasp the pen in order to break through the falseness or the taboos created by the fathers, establishing, at the same time, the relation of solidarity with the world of the grandfathers. The act of writing becomes an actualization of the ancestral universe of magic. The settlement of accounts with the parental generation concerns the vision of nation built upon the resistance against the colonizer (it also refers to the Polish cultural formation, based on the tradition of uprisings and resistance against the Russians). W Polsce to zafałszowanie wiąże się z rzekomą kluczową rolą inteligencji, monopolizującej pisanie i zamykającej pozostałe grupy społeczne w hip-hopowej oralności. Młodzi intelektualiści buntują się poniekąd przeciwko pokoleniu rodzicielskiemu, szukają zaś oparcia u przodków, budując pomost solidarności między światem kultury piśmiennej a kulturami tradycyjnymi.

In this article, I analyse the work of two Native playwrights: Mary Kathryn Nagle’s (Cherokee) Sliver of a Full Moon and Marie Clements’ (Metis/Dene) Tombs of the Vanishing Indian. I trace how these two women use the stage as a space for portraying embodied, historic, gendered violence, like rape, forced sterilization, and the disruption of family relationships. In addition, Nagle and Clements also perform possible worlds into being where Native women lead their communities toward healing and restoration.

Berhard Waldenfels claimed that at the turn of 18th and 19th century “the alien explicitly and definitely penetrated the heart of the reason and the heart of the one’s own” in Western culture. Since then we no longer live in a world, where we could be fully ourselves. But the alien still haunts us and raises fear. A hundred years later, at the turn of 19th and 20th century, British literature presented two powerful images of confrontation with the alien, images that penetrated the imagination of the mass audience in 20th and 21st century: Martians from H.G. Wells’ famous novel and the iconic bloodthirsty count created by B. Stoker. Though they seemingly radically differ from humans at a close look they make us rethink our definition of humanity and of the alien.

This article analyses Claude McKay’s 1929 novel Banjo focusing on its anti-essentialist approach to black identity. Such prevalent anti-essentialism differs from the racial pride politics of the Harlem Renaissance, the literary movement with which McKay is usually associated. The rhizomatic poetics of this work will be explained through the fluid character which Glissant and other later Caribbean regionalist critics ascribe to the Caribbean text. This approach favours a hemispheric perception of the Americas which aligns with McKay’s ideas on black identity. Thus, it will be concluded that the prevalence of the American influence in Banjo despite its European setting reflects Quijano and Wallerstein’s model of Americanity for explaining the modern world order which saw its dawn in the Caribbean with the arrival of the Europeans.

Departing from the analysis of the relationship between the birth of the subject of race and the development of capitalism (Mbembe), Sajewska examines the status of blackness in semi-peripheral countries, such as Poland, whose participation in the history of colonial expansion is negligible, as is its influence on the shape and prosperity of capitalism. In her text she proposes to look at peripheral cultural practices as ways of producing and problematizing knowledge. She focuses her attention on Artur Żmijewski's film Glimpse, which was first presented at documenta 14 in Athens in 2017, as a result of the artist's month-long trip with his camera to areas affected by repressive refugee policy. In her historical-cultural analysis of the film, Sajewska shows the position of the artist as a subject representing "peripheral modernity" (Pratt), who on the margins of the European center - in refugee camps - once again performs the racist scenes that underpin the idea of the center’s modernity. Reflecting on the provincial status of the discourses, on the ways in which they are “travelling” in culture, on the localness of the archive and on the regional character of the concepts, she opens up perspectives on peripheral history and culture theory.

The article is an attempt to describe the literary genealogy of the cultural transformations of the role of a father and the relation father-son in the 19th century. The key role of literature in the modern liberal education allows us to see in this discourse the power which has conserved, violated and transformed this group of stereotypes of masculinity. The writer who exerted the greatest influence on the building of the attractive models of a man and a boy in the Polish culture was Henryk Sienkiewicz. The reading of these issues in his work brings the observations which immensely complicate the conventional images of masculinity or the relation fatherson in the 19th century culture.

In The Vampire Reymont presents London as the imperial city falling into decline, where Polish immigrants, who lack identity, wander timelessly. It is also a place where a mercantile society is immersed in a reality dominated by technological development. Reymont's novel allows us to analyse the space of London at the end of the 19th century, and the human fate which is determined by this space. In my paper I would like to focus on the analysis of the city space, including the division into centre and suburbs of London, and losing the way in a maze (a maze of streets and a maze of subconsciousness of the main characters), the consequences of abandoning sacrum, entropy, and the crisis of family and art. The interesting vision of London created by Reymont gives us answers to a few important questions. Do the Polish immigrants find themselves in a new reality? How does the experience of a modern city affect people's lives? Why cannot contemporary man find his place in the surrounding world?

Artykuł dotyczy powieści La riva della vita minore włoskiego pisarza syryjskiego pochodzenia, Alessandra Spiny. Powieść przedstawia realia polityczne i społeczne Libii w latach 50. i 60.

Opis:
The advent of British Colonial rule in Nigeria transformed the traditional African society in a number of ways, some positive others negative. The initial policies adopted to integrate Nigerian into the British colonial system, however, proved a catalyst that triggered mass movement of people from rural to urban centers thereby creating as it were unexpected demographic dislocation. British development of communication and infrastructures such as railways and the network of road system was part of a deliberate policy to foster the growth of “legitimate trade” in the interior. The early imposition of tax regime in the Northern Protectorate induced people from the zone of taxation to migrate to tax free zones. The combination of abiding peace, agricultural export and modern communication system stimulated migration during British colonial administration in Nigeria. It is the conviction of the author that establishment of British rule had fundamental far-reaching effect on inter-ethnic mingling and migration. The paper examines the various policies of the British at the onset of colonial rule and the effect of these on inter-ethnic migration and mingling. Attempt is made to briefly define the two key words, migration and colonialism, in order to give better understanding to the work. The paper concludes that British colonial policies had profound effect on the people’s decision to leave home and migrate to zones of administrative and economic activities.

The focus of the analysis is in the ideology by which the discourse subject observes the city. From the viewpoint of patriotic ideology, the subject comments on the colonialist relations that occur at the time in Rijeka, but his idealization of patriotic culture, as opposed to „negative” historic, landscape and political status of the city, impede his ability to give an accurate insight. Therefore, his work is inclined to be more political than literary.

Opis:
The sociological lives of a work: The trajectories, productions and receptions of Abdelmalek Sayad (1960–2000)Taking as his point of departure the sociological-analytical tools applied by the immigration scholar Abdelmayek Sayad, the author of this article investigates the biographical facts that influenced Sayad’s works and practice. The first part is devoted to Sayad’s Algerian biography, that is his life before arriving in France in 1963. The most important point here is the meeting, during the Algerian War (1958), of young Pierre Bourdieu, then an assistant at the University of Algiers and the turn they both made to social science. The second part of the text is devoted to the life of Abdelmalek Sayad on different stages of the creation and reception of his scholarly work. The author aims to study the ways in which the sociologist took into consideration the reception of his work: how reception reflexively influenced Sayad’s sociology.

The Mali Federation may be perceived as one of the first African attempts at regional integration. After the Loi-cadre was enacted in 1959, the French colonies started their path toward independence, and they sought for cooperation. However, both views on the future relationship with the Fifth Republic and internal disputes over power distribution came as their most significant threats. The author analyses the idea and the creation of the Mali Federation, taking into consideration the political and historical factors. The aim of this paper is to present a general overview of one of the first and most important independence movements in West Africa. The federation was to consist initially of 4 states, but eventually, only 2 of them, i.e., French Sudan and Senegal, decided to adopt its constitution. Those two countries shared many similarities with each other; however, the lack of agreement between the parties prevented the effective functioning of the federation as a sovereign state. Although it existed only for two months, the Mali Federation marked the possibilities and the difficulties for the African cooperation and integration processes for the next decades.

Opis:
This article discusses certain parallels between Du Bois’ notion of double consciousness, Fanon’s discussion of the neurotic inter-relationship between the colonial master and the native, and Marcuse’s concept of one-dimensionality in order to draw an analogy between enslavement and the status of citizen in advanced Western-style societies today. The aim is to explore the exercise of power within these societies and cast light upon the manner in which the discourse of freedom both constitutes and masks submission to power. The argument is made that submission has come to be regarded as the fulfillment of human potential insofar as we have learned to look at ourselves through the eyes of those who exercise power over us, having lost the ability to imagine that the situation in which we live could, and should, be different than it is. The conception of symbolic interaction as it is now typically employed is drawn into question for the difficulties it faces in addressing unbalanced interaction in the power-submission relationship. The concept of nouveau colonialism is developed in order to capture how the relations that once obtained between a metropole and its overseas colonial possessions have in a sense been replicated between those who exercise power and those subject to power within one and the same community.

This paper is a short attempt at examining Tagore’s concept of modernity, by trying to understand what modernism and its relation to modernity means in this poet’s work. Considering the large range of his writings, essays and novels are selected according to what I consider to be the most relevant to the present investigation, favoring the more systematic writings among Tagore’’s novels and essays. Gora, however, another complex criticism of Nationalism, has not been included here, since its analysis would deserve a complete paper. It also does not focus on the introduction of European modernisms and European modernist expressions in India from a historical or aesthetic perspective. Rather, it underline a conceptual understanding through Tagore’s work of his own ideas, and the experience of modernism in India through his Indian writings. In so doing, I try to present the important differences of these concepts in an Indian colonial context, as well as the singularity of Tagore himself in his own context, hoping to contribute to an exploration of the poet’s talent and richness of expression and thinking.
