Opis:
Collaborative learning in online contexts is emotionally challenging for language learners. To achieve successful learning outcomes, language learners need to regulate their emotions and sustain positive emotions during the collaborative learning process. This study investigated language learners’ emotion regulation and enjoyment, the most extensively researched positive emotion in foreign language learning, in an online collaborative English learning environment. In the study, we collected data by surveying 336 Chinese students majoring in English who collaboratively completed a series of English language writing tasks in 108 online groups facilitated by a social media app (WeChat). Principal component analysis revealed two primary types of emotion regulation: peer regulation and group regulation. The analysis also revealed one factor underpinning enjoyment: enjoyment of online collaboration. Correlation analysis showed medium and positive relationships between peer regulation, group regulation, and enjoyment of online collaboration. Structural equation modeling analysis further found that group regulation exerted a medium-sized direct effect on enjoyment of online collaboration. Peer regulation affected enjoyment of online collaboration moderately and indirectly via group regulation. The theoretical and pedagogical implications of the findings can help to optimize face-to-face and online collaborative language learning activities.

Research background: There is a considerable amount of literature focused on customers' motivation to participate in cooperative new product development [NPD], but previous research neglected the suppliers' perspective concerning organizational mechanisms for the facilitation of customer involvement in cooperative new product development. Purpose of the article: The aim of the study is to explore the influence of two kinds of dynamic capabilities, proactive customer orientation [PCO] and joint learning capability [JLC] on the acceptance and use of machine to machine interaction [M2M] in collaborative innovation development [CID], from the supplier's perspective. Methods: The research is based on a case study carried out from June 2018 till June 2019 of a Polish automation integrator supplying a manufacturer of automotive equipment, i.e. automotive industry, in a fully robotized workstation. In order to understand how the company functions in this case, in-depth interviews with the company's employees have been conducted. Findings & Value added: The results revealed that intelligent devices, interacting machines, and real-time data transfer to the supplier may cause disruptions through their impact on establishing trustful business relationships. We believe our findings could have a profound impact on the way how proactive customer orientation and relational interactions supported knowledge sharing and joint learning sense-making through operational meetings and on-the-job workshops which role was to evaluate the collaborative project.

The current article presents an example of a consecutive interpreting activity, which draws on the concept of autonomy in language learning. With regard to the "applied" component of translation studies, as formulated by Holmes (1988), the authors intend to demonstrate the need for enhancingforeign language competence in translator education, accentuating its role in the conceptualization of the discipline. Considering the context of this type of education, which is offered frequently to undergraduate students, the authors posit the need to concomitantly develop the command of a foreign language. They propose to compensate teaching practices derived from translation studies with the use of foreign language methodology for developing translating and interpreting skills.

Opis:
This paper presents a proposition to utilize flexible neural network architecture called Deep Hybrid Collaborative Filtering with Content (DHCF) as a product recommendation engine. Its main goal is to provide better shopping suggestions for customers on the e-commerce platform. The system was tested on 2018 Amazon Reviews Dataset, using repeated cross validation and compared with other approaches: collaborative filtering (CF) and deep collaborative filtering (DCF) in terms of mean squared error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). DCF and DHCF were proved to be significantly better than the CF. DHCF proved to be better than DCF in terms of MAE and MAPE, it also scored the best on separate test data. The significance of the differences was checked by means of a Friedman test, followed by post-hoc comparisons to control p-value. The experiment shows that DHCF can outperform other approaches considered in the study, with more robust scores.
DCF i DHCF uzyskały wyniki istotnie lepsze niż CF, a dodatkowo DHCF uzyskał lepsze wyniki niż DCF pod względem MAE i MAPE. Istotność różnic sprawdzano testem Friedmana z porównaniami wielokrotnymi i kontrolą poziomu istotności. Eksperyment dowodzi, że DHCF uzyskuje lepsze i stabilniejsze wyniki niż pozostałe metody.

Opis:
COVID-19 has created a dramatic and rapid transition to emergency remote teaching in higher education (HE) creating both new opportunities and challenges for lecturers and their students. As HE adapts to these new circumstances, there is a need for instructors to design and teach classes that support collaborative learning and increase opportunities for student interactivity. This article reports on an ongoing study exploring university students’ experiences and perceptions of using breakout rooms (BRs), a technical feature of many synchronous online platforms, as part of their online classes. Using a mixed methods research approach, 127 students, who were registered on English language courses at a university in Cyprus during Spring 2021, participated in the study. Findings indicate that students’ experiences and perceptions of breakout rooms during this period were impacted in five key areas: (1) emotional/affective, (2) moral/ethical, (3) social, (4) pedagogical and (5) technological. These findings suggest that students’ personal feelings, attitudes to online learning, sense of connectedness to their peers, expectations of the role and presence of the lecturer and issues relating to the technology, are all considered to be significant factors in their use of BRs. This study offers initial insights for educators who wish to use, modify and/or adapt synchronous online teaching to incorporate collaborative learning opportunities through breakout rooms.

Collaborative Clustering is a data mining task the aim of which is to use several clustering algorithms to analyze different aspects of the same data. The aim of collaborative clustering is to reveal the common underlying structure of data spread across multiple data sites by applying clustering techniques. The idea of collaborative clustering is that each collaborator shares some information about the segmentation (structure) of its local data and improve its own clustering with the information provided by the other learners. This paper analyses the impact of the quality and the diversity of the potential learners to the quality of the collaboration for topological collaborative clustering algorithms based on the learning of a Self-Organizing Map (SOM). Experimental analysis on real data-sets showed that the diversity between learners impact the quality of the collaboration. We also showed that some internal indexes of quality are a good estimator of the increase of quality due to the collaboration.

Opis:
Music and sound in historical games are largely based on memic associations of collective consciousness. While the contexts of visual and narrative realism are already quite well researched, the issue of the audio realism of historical games is one that requires more thorough analysis. The article tries to ponder the following questions: how closely does the sound layer bring a player to the real music of the historical period in which the game takes place? What sound “tricks” determine the phenomenon of an average player being able to recognize and associate the soundtrack from a geohistorical point of view? In the text, I take the issue under scrutiny in terms of musical forms usage in games aligned with a given historical phase as well as in relation to period instruments and geographic location. Creators’ well-balancing with these elements contributes to a deeper im-mersion of the player in the era and location in which the game takes place. Thus, it is one of the immersion enhancing elements.

With various aims and objectives, syllabi of e-learning, blended learning and webenhanced courses meant for a particular group of undergraduates or postgraduates, may vary substantially. However different they are, they are likely to show behaviourist ideas embodied in instructional design. A plethora of online tools (text based, image based, multimodal production and collaborative ones) can increase students’ learning experiences, as they offer opportunities for interactions that are not available in a traditional, instructivist classroom setting. Thus, a university language course with web-enhanced components offers more versatile learning options than face-to-face classes, which may result in students becoming more competent and competitive workers in the years to come. By using online tools such as ThingLink, mural, quip, easel.ly, infogram and venngage to collect and critically analyse data, they learn in a new active way, in a more genuine environment. This way of engaging students helps them to achieve learning outcomes structured around communication, teamwork, media literacy and language skills. These ideas are supported by students’ opinions and attitudes expressed in the surveys conducted at Gdańsk University of Technology in the years 2017–2019.
Istnieje wiele typów zajęć e-learningowych, blended learningowych i wspomaganych komponentami online. Dzięki wykorzystaniu narzędzi online do prowadzenia projektów grupowych można stworzyć bardziej autentyczne środowisko edukacyjne, przypominające sytuacje mające miejsce w życiu codziennym i zawodowym.

A Technical English course for students of science and engineering can be designed to allow them to acquire not only language but also non-language, soft skills, which will help them become competent and competitive workers in the years to come. Language learning curricula which innovatively integrate technology with traditional textbook-based activities can focus on developing analytical, reflective and critical thinking, communication, problem solving, flexibility, resilience, as well as negotiations and time management skills. This can be achieved through web-enhanced classes structured around collaborative tasks. Different types of interactions evoked by various stimuli triggered by the affordances and functionalities of web tools may help the teacher prepare an effective educational environment. Profession-related content and teamwork may be two major factors in students being more engaged in learning and more satisfied from their progress. The ideas presented above are supported by the opinions and attitudes of the students of Gdansk University of Technology who have attended English language classes with online collaboration modules. The research into the nature of web-enhanced courses and their impact on an increase in student competencies is in its initial stage and may include subjective results.

Previous research in the domain of maritime energy efficiency has mainly addressed concerns regarding individual experiences and organizational barriers. Reflection on the reciprocal human-technology relationship, interaction design and its impact on the practitioners’ learning and organizational decision-making process is rather scarce. Informed by focus group interviews, this paper describes the essence of practitioners’ activities and the nature of interaction design and proposed improved design for energy efficiency monitoring systems. Findings suggest knowledge sharing for a mutual understanding onboard ships is critical to energy efficiency. Learning can go beyond the embodiment of individual cognitive change but becomes a collective and collaborative achievement mediated by technology, which informs opportunities for interaction design. The design needs to consider the context in which knowledge mobilisation occurs and facilitate collaborative learning. With more intelligent systems introduced to the shipping industry, it is important to consider the impact of mediating technologies in management practices and mediating technologies can be integrated into a broader collaborative learning paradigm emerging between the ship and shore. This study highlights those social-cultural dimensions important to establishing a common ground between practitioners, management and advanced technologies.

Web 2.0 provides resources and tools that make the learning process social and collaborative as they connect students with each other and help to move from the instructor-centred methods of teaching to more contextual learning and problem-solving techniques (J.West and M.West, 2009). The aim of the paper is to introduce findings on the project of implementing Web 2.0 resources for collaborative work in the National Research University Higher School of Economics. The main objectives of the project were to 1) single out Internet resources aimed at collaboration to suit the purposes of educational programme; 2) determine how much collaborative learning background students have and their attitudes to online and face-to-face collaboration; 3) analyse the students’ involvement in collaborative learning activities; 4) research the influence of web-related technologies on willingness to collaborate. The main methods used in the research were questionnaire, interview and observation as well as analyses of students’ work. The results revealed a positive attitude to Web 2.0 among the majority of the students. The offered Internet resources (Tricider.com, MeetingWords.com, TodaysMeet.com) improved communication and collaboration outside of the classroom, which is vital as increasingly less time is being allocated for studying a foreign language. Besides, Web 2.0 resources make it easier for teachers to evaluate each student’s contribution to task achievement and ensure fair assessment of each student’s work.

The aim of this paper is to justify the assumption that understanding is the essence of learning. From the constructivist viewpoint understanding is a complex mental and social process that involves decoding the symbolic message received from others and then interpreting and assigning a personal meaning to that message. Since personal background largely determines how the message will be understood it is important that the development of the learning environment encourages understanding from multiple perspective. Therefore the learning process should be based on techniques drawn from the constructivist’s epistemological assumptions, e.g., construction of intersubjective perspective, situated cognition in authentic life contexts and collaborative learning environment.
