Church in the 18th century
Opis:
In the 18th century organs rapidly became popular in the Wiślica district. It has been found that most organs built then were small instruments in today's understanding. They consisted of positives without pedals. As far as the names are concerned it seems like the organs were a bigger instrument than the positive, especially with respect to the number of voices. Studies of the number of voices have shown that the number of instruments called `organs' and `positive' was equal, with the range of voices between six and nine. The most typical place where organs were put was the organ loft, which was at the back of the church, over the main door: 75.5% of the organs stood there. The inspections do not give much information about the construction details of the organs. With respect to the bellows most often their number was mentioned: it was 2, 4 or 6. Pedals were mentioned in two parishes but it may be assumed that there were more of them. It has been found that the percentage of portable instruments decreased – in the first half of the 18th century from 20 to 17.6%, and this process was especially rapid in the second half of the 18th century: from 17.6 to 7.7%. This proves a decrease in popularity of this kind of organs. During the 18th century the number of organists increased, which was probably related to the increase in the number of organs. If at the beginning of the 18th century the number of organists in relation to the number of inspected churches was a little above 60%, it increased to 90% in the middle of that century, and at the end of it it was probably 100%. The organists only had the names of Christian saints or ones that appeared in the Old Testament. They represented all age groups. Most often they were between 40 and 55 years old, and the average age was 42. The organist often had also the function of chanter, teacher, sacristan or bell-ringer. He was usually given a whole house, received payment in money, sometimes fairly big, and a strip of land or garden to maintain.

Opis:
The provisions of the Union of Brest guaranteed the use of the Julian calendar in the Uniate Church. In the second half of the 18th century, as result of the social-political changes and of the so-called reduction of holidays in the Latin Church the issue of a reform of the calendar was brought up in the circle of the Uniate Church hierarchs. Work on it and debates showed that the calendar was clearly considered to be a element identifying all the faithful and an important factor creating a sense of separateness and of one's identity in the multi-confessional and multinational Republic of Poland. The issue of a reform of the calendar used by the Uniate Church was raised in the forum of the Great Sejm, but a new list of holidays was compiled by Uniate bishops during the congress held in Warsaw on 17th September 1790. The hierarchy of the Uniate Church also had to take a position on the changes in the calendar introduced by the invader countries. The actions taken by Uniate hierarchs in the 18th century are an illustration of the attempt to unite and combine economic reasons with religious and social influences dictated by the ideas of the Enlightenment.

Opis:
In the 18th century, the Szeptycki family gave the Uniate Church four bishops: Barłaam Bazyli, Atanazy Antoni, Ludwik Leon, Atanazy Andrzej. The Episcopal dignity gave them a chance to foster the prestige of their family. In order to achieve this goal, the bishops used religious celebrations and festivities to as an arena in which they produced their message with the use of all means of communication known to the world of that era. Through the diversity of their appeal, they were able to reach all social layers. In their methodology of proclaiming the prestige of the family, the bishops used panegyric texts and artefacts of material culture, which they made full of genealogical and heraldic references. These initiatives allowed the bishops to sustain the position of their family on a local scale, as borne out by the official titles of some of the members of the family. However, the bishops failed in gaining any influence at the royal court. Although the main focus of all these activities was on elevating the social status of the family, the bishops’ actions influenced directly the change within the Uniate Church. Through their reliance on methods and means of communication which imitated the model developed by the Nobles and the Roman Catholic Church, the Uniate bishops brought their Church to the realm of Latin civilization.

villages in the Lublin region in the 18th century
Opis:
First names given to children depend on many factors: ethnic background, religion, geographic location, societal status or time period. This article deals with the name-giving pattern and its evolution in peasant families during the period 1757-1809 in four villages within the realm of the parish of Fajsławice in the Lublin Region. The four villages in question were: Fajsławice, Siedliska, Suchodoły and Wola Idzikowska. At the beginning of the period under analysis, the pool of baptismal names was rather small: only 33 different male and 26 female names were used. The distribution of these names was hardly homogenous: 8.3% of all boys were named Wojciech, 19.8% of girls – Marianna, while some other names were used only once. A similar pattern was also observed in the other regions of Poland at that time. In order to identify what motivated parents as regards name selection, a few factors have been investigated: birth near the patron saint day, name inheritance from parents, and inspiration from the local cult of saints. The statistical analysis of the annual distribution of given names over the first 13 years of the parish’s existence proved to be most strongly affected by the date of birth: 95.8% of all boys were given the name of a saint, whose patron date was in the period of 4 weeks before or 4 weeks after the boy’s birth date; 81.6% for those who were born two weeks before or one week after the patron date. In most cases, the name was selected after a patron whose day was after the birth date. For girls’ names, the effect of the birth date on the baptismal name was slightly weaker, but still dominant: 86.9% of all girls born during the period between 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after the saint day received the name of the patroness. The analysis has also shown that the children’s names were practically not affected by the parents’ names or the names of a parish patron saint. The same name was given to siblings only if the previous one had died. In the period of 50 years under analysis, the naming pattern underwent a significant change: 76 new names were introduced (44 for boys and 32 for girls). Practically all of them followed the calendar rule, but the crucial role in their selection was played by the parish priests: some of them were more conservative and introduced practically no new names; some others were very creative, although some of the names they suggested did not stay in the pool of active names for a long time. The tradition of giving two names was not very significant, but, some parish priests tended to give double names more often than others. Many new names, both single and double ones, were inspired by new saints canonized in the 17th and the 18th century, especially those, who were Jesuits.

Opis:
Artykuł poświęcony jest biografii malarza-pijara Łukasza od św. Pantaleona (w stanie świeckim Albert Ziemecki). Dotychczas zyskał on jedynie drobne, niepozbawione omyłek wzmianki.
The article focuses on the biography of the Piarist painter Luke of St Pantaleon (Polish: Łukasz od św. Pantaleona, lay name: Albert Ziemecki). Until now, he has been the subject of no more than short, often erroneous remarks. A thorough research query at the Archivio Generale delle Scuole Pie in Rome and the Archives of the Polish Province of the Piarist congregation in Cracow made it possible to gather detailed facts concerning his life. The painter lived in the years 1755–1715. He was a Pole, a native of Rzeszów, and entered the order in 1679, already as a trained artist. During his 36 years of monastic service, he lived in only three Piarist colleges: at Rzeszów, Góra and Łowicz. His status within the order was unique, as he did not engage in any educational activity and was exclusively involved in artistic work, producing drawings, easel paintings and wall polychromes. The latter constituted his opus magnum: at the end of the 17th century, he decorated the church and college in Rzeszów, and at the beginning of the 18th century, the church in Łowicz. A full catalogue of the works of this underestimated Polish painter of the Baroque period will be presented in a monograph, now being prepared for a separate edition.

Opis:
The reference library of the Archives of the Metropolitan Curia in Kraków has the largest known collection of liturgical calendars printed for the needs of the clergy of the Diocese of Kraków. The collection has been almost complete since the mid-18th century. According to the modified classification adopted by Rev. Stanislaw Librowski, Kraków’s liturgical calendars can be divided into four types, closely related to the phases of their development. The first type includes liturgical calendars issued without any additions (16th century to 1750), the second type includes calendars with a list of deceased clergymen (from 1751) and a catalogue of prelates and cathedral canons (from 1753). The third type of liturgical calendars includes printed materials connected with the full catalogue of parishes and clergy (from 1811 onwards), and the fourth type includes independent prints which contain a separate liturgical calendar and the diocesan schemes, appeared as late as 1871. Until the end of the 18th century, the cathedral chapters were usually responsible for issuing the liturgical calendars. One of cathedral canons or vicars, whose name was usually given on the title page, developed the text on behalf of an ordinary bishop or vicar capitular. The chapter was responsible for printing and distributing the calendar. In Kraków, the calendar was edited by successive deputy deans of Wawel Cathedral, who at the same time were canons of St George’s Collegiate Church at Wawel. Preserved copies of the calendars include the signatures of their owners, which allow us to learn the history of the collection. Many of the preserved copies of the calendars also contain remarks made by the owners. These refer to spiritual and economic issues, providing information on important matters for the clergy.
