early Christian church
Opis:
The church discussed in the paper is situated in Avgia, on the outskirts of Batumi. It is an early Christian period hall-type church with northern and southern wings. The ground plan of the whole structure resembles the well-known layout of the croix libre. The whole building is 23.85 m long and 19.0 m wide – including the arms. It has a projecting semi-circular apse whose radius is 6.05 m. The main space of the church is divided into three parts. It consists of a transverse hall, which may have operated as a narthex, a hall, and an altar apse. The floor of the structure was covered with pinkish lime mortar, a mixture of small pebbles and ceramic powder. The only central entrance to the church was located on the west side. The northern annex had an entrance in the north-western corner, and the southern one – in the south-eastern corner. The church seems to have been built of rubble stone. The construction style, layout, and archaeological evidence from the site narrow down its chronology to the 5th and 6th centuries AD.

Nubia constituted the area in the Nile Valley in the present day Sudan, the area which spread from the first cataract up to the place where the White Nile meets the Blue Nile. The area was inhabited by the population using a common language – Old Nubian. In the second half of the sixth century thanks to the missions send by the Byzantine Court, Nubia accepted Christianity as a state religion. Nubia immediately found itself in the area of influence of Byzantine culture. Byzantine administration, liturgy of the Eastern Church and the Greek language were introduced. In 641 the Arab conquest of Egypt took place. Soon after that in 642, the Arab army entered the Nubian territory and from this date centuries of clashes and peace treaties characterized relations between Nubians and Arab peoples. The 13th century marks slow decline of the kingdom of Nubia. Hostile Negro tribes from the South and South-West appear in the Mid Valley of Nile. Fights weaken the kingdom; slow islamization of the country follows, royal rule and Christian faith falls and together with those culture and arts deteriorates. The history of military as well as political or commercial Nubian-Arabic contacts over entire period of existence of Christian kingdom of Nubia undoubtedly had to bring about certain artistic trends in Nubia originating from rich heritage of Muslim culture. The culture of Christian Nubia originally based to considerable extent on Byzantine art, in course of time, subjected to more and more intense Arabic influence, significantly changed. Arabic components seen in Nubian church architecture, wall painting and art crafts became predominant, which over following centuries led to creation of Arabic culture of the contemporary Sudan.

Opis:
Christian parties, which emerged as organized parliamentary powers in the second half of the 20th century, have a long history and initial phase, which is presented in this paper. The period of their historical, progressive development was a breakthrough, and a transition from the pre-revolutionary era to the post-revolutionary world, characterized by the liberalization of a strong state, industrialization and the emergence of social problems, new ideologies and processes of secularization. The development of Christian-democratic parties in Poland took place with almost two decades of delay in relation to the flwering of Christian democratic parties in Western Europe. The fist Christian democratic parties appeared in Poland only in the interwar period. During this period, the weakest point of Polish Christian democrats was the small share of intelligence in its ranks and lack of support from the Catholic Church. In the early 1990s, numerous Christian democratic groups began to appear on the Polish political scene, but none of them retained their positions for longer. First of all, it was characterized by a huge gap, almost arbitrary programme, which often had more to do with conservative ideology than with Christian-democratic one.

Opis:
The essay is excerpted from a chapter of a book that is currently being written by the author. The working title of the book is Spacery po kościołach rzymskich [Walks through historical churches and temples of Rome] (Wydawnictwo Zeszytów Literackich). The present essay aims at discussing the specific character of the Christian church architecture of the city of Rome that constitutes nodes of a network that has been developing throughout one and a half millennia. Each of the chapters of the book is centered around a particular walk of the town that includes on its way the described churches. The walks cover virtually the whole of the old town and some of the adjacent palaces. The adopted method of presentation is purely personal and has a character of a “Roman diary” — to some extent, the author has been inspired by Promenades das Rome by Stendhal. The diary is, however, a particular guide book on the town for those who want to experience something else that the offer presented by standard guidebooks. Notwithstanding it subjective angle, the book does not interfere in passing the essential historical and artistic knowledge to the reader. Rome appears here to be a singular place, as a personification of one of the most important stages of Western civilization.

Opis:
Podczas prac archeologicznych w Hippos (aramejska Susita) Dekapolis, prowadzonych w latach 2000-2010 zarejestrowano łącznie 885 monet.
Hippos, also known as Sussita, was located on a hill on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, was one of the cities of Decapolis. Its origins date back to the Hellenistic period, although it is not certain whether its foundation took place during the reign of the Ptolemies or Seleucids in that region. As a Greek city with a small admixture of Jewish population, it was torn by internal ethnic conflicts starting from Hasmonean domination (83-80 BC) until the alliance of Greek population with Romans during the First Jewish War (66-73). Archaeological research in Hippos 2000-2010 uncovered a total of 885 coins. The Polish team working in the NWC complex discovered 43 coins dating from the 3rd century BC to the 8th century AD. These include 3 Ptolemaic coins, 3 coins of the Seleucids, 1 coin of Tyre from the late 2nd century BC, an anonymous coin minted in Phoenicia in the 1st century AD, a coin of Herod the Great (37-4), 2 Roman provincial coins of the 2nd century, 3 Roman Imperial coins and 2 Arabian from 3rd century. 3 coins were minted by the successors of Constantine I the Great (306-337). Coinage of the Late Roman Empire is represented by 5 pieces. Also found were 2 Byzantine coins, 1 Arab coin of 7th or 8th centuries, and 14 Umayyad coins. This numismatic material has been briefly described, arranged in chronological groups.

Zasadniczym celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie przebiegu postępowania rewindykacyjnego nieruchomości kościelnej należącej do parafii Polskiego Kościoła Ewangelicznych Chrześcijan Baptystów we Wrocławiu, wraz z analizą wydanych w toku postępowania decyzji administracyjnych. Szczególna uwaga została zwrócona na zagadnienia prawne związane z zastosowaniem art. 2 ust.
The main aim of the paper is to present the course of the restitution proceedings concerning the church property of the parish of the Polish Evangelical Christian Baptist Church in Wrocław, as well as to analyse the administrative decisions issued during the proceedings. Special attention is given to the legal issues related to applying art. 2 para. 4 of the decree of 8 March 1946 on abandoned and post-German properties and to the consequences of the resolution of the Supreme Court of 19 December 1959 for the legal effects in the interpretation of art. 2 para. 4 of the decree. A definitive decision on this issue that refused to grant the right of ownership to the Church was issued only 13 years after the restitution application had been submitted. The excessive duration of the proceedings was confirmed by the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (Application no. 32045/10). The Second Congregation in Wrocław (the legal successor of the above-mentioned parish) did not recover the property lost after World War II under the provisions of the act regulating the legal situation of the Church of Christian Baptists in the Republic of Poland. A close examination of the circumstances of the lengthy restitution litigation indicates that in order to resolve the question of the right of ownership of this property, it is necessary to pursue another route than the administrative one.

The article offers an architectural analysis of a late antique and medieval type of church characterized by a naos with four pillars or columns supporting the roof. Variants that can be distinguished include one with a passage around the supports and another in which the supports form a cross-in-square. The analyzed type is poorly represented in the church architecture of Egypt, but is well attested in Lower Nubia. Nubian examples of the type give an idea of what the lost Egyptian prototypes may have looked like.

Opis:
The author focuses on determinants of the position and place of the Catholic Church – mainly in Poland and from the perspective of recent years. He delivers an opinion – assessment confirming the close cooperation of the Catholic Church (as an institution) with the structures of the state. Additionally, he formulates a remark that we are observing the crisis of this religious association. These remarks – constituting the first part of the article – are completed with a general reference to the political situation in Poland (since 2015). Parts two and three refer directly to the topic formulated in the title. The author – reaching to specific examples from the history of the Catholic Church – pursues to find a justification (explanation) for the place and role of this institution in recent years (mainly he does it on the example of Poland). He emphasizes how the history of the Catholic Church – its doctrinal and theological foundations influence the community’s situation (especially in the context of state-church relations). Presenting the so-called weak sides of the Catholic Church (mainly from the perspective of its activity as an institution, less – from the perspective of faith), the author indicates the necessity of undertaking the effort of renewal in the direction of “living in a Christian way in a post-Christian society.”

In the work of preaching the Gospel, the Church recognizes the important role of the laity, which is ready to show everyday the beauty and joy of life with Christ and accompany others in achieving Christian maturity. Also, the task of Catholics „in the autumn of life” is to share with others peace and joy and all the fruits of the Spirit of God. For older people, participation in the work of evangelization is a challenge to take greater responsibility for their lives lived in relation to others, and thus to overcome the state of apathy, to stay in a constant, living contact with society and to free themselves from an exaggerated focus on their concerns and suffering. The main fields of commitment of age-advanced believers in evangelization are families, parishes, hospitals, hospices and nursing homes. It is when they are readyto accept both happiness and joy of life, as well as pain and suffering, it reveals to others the truth of the Christian meaning of human existence, which can be found both in health and in disease. For elderly Catholics, this means a constant concern for growth in faith, which is possible for them through an active participation in the evangelizing mission of the Church.

Opis:
There is an urgent need to build adult catechesis in the Church in Poland. This catechesis ought to actually be directed to the adult. This adult is the entity of Church’s life. Creating adult catechesis means to take into account not only the doctrinal aspects, but also problems of the adult. The catechesis is supposed to build mature Christian communities and a grown-up person should take mission and evangelical tasks in it. The community is fully developed if it is obedient to the word of God, when it cherishes the actual community of faith, when it remains in the service of love and boldly tries to spread the Word. It is also able to look critically at itself and nurture to give witness in the present-day world. This catechesis is to build the Church the way it should be. It is not enough to accept the adult as he currently is. The adult must become responsible for the life and development of the Church. So, not only he or she has their place in reflection about the Church and programming its life but in its active building as well.
Istnieje pilna potrzeba tworzenia w Kościele w Polsce katechezy dorosłych. Katecheza ta powinna być rzeczywiście skierowana do człowieka dorosłego. To on jest podmiotem życia Kościoła.

A well established program can be observed in the decoration of the northern pastophoria of Nubian churches from the 9th/10th century onwards. It consisted of a painted representation of Jesus Christ blessing with his right hand the chalice held in his left and inscriptions in Greek with prayers from the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. The authors argue that this program was a Nubian creation, alluding to the function of the northern pastophorium as a place for storing oblations, keeping liturgical implements and liturgical reserve, and possibly also celebrating the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.

The dedication of a Church is not the only rite that is used for the initiation of a new place of Christian worship. At the beginning of the construction of a building, liturgical sources provide for the Rite of Foundation of a Church in which blessings are asked on both the workers and also on the future edifice. This paper gives a comparative analysis of prayers used in the rites of the Byzantine-Greek and Latin traditions. Although both traditions have different theological emphasis they also have similarities too. This study bears fruit in allowing us to create a common ecumenical definition of the church-building arising from these analysed texts – it is the future place of Christian worship which (ἐκκλησία, ecclesia) is a house (οἶκος) constructed (opus) for God, to celebrate His glory (cf. Es 40,34-35; Ez 9,3) in and through the divine mysteries (templum). This place is made by the community of the faithful and it from this same community it takes its name (ἐκκλησία, ecclesia).

The first layer of Aromanian Christian terminology is common for all the Balkan Romance languages. It contains a number of inherited Latin terms and some early assimilated Greek loanwords, due to the Oriental origin of Christianity. As for the later layer, the compound of terms related to ecclesiastical organisation and liturgy or to more sophisticated doctrinal concepts, the Balkan Romance languages substantially differ. In Romanian, it was formed on the basis of Slavonic (or Greek via Slavonic), which was used in the Romanian Orthodox Church by the 17th century. The liturgical language of the Aromanians was Greek (maybe except for Moscopole) and therefore, Aromanian mainly based its religious terminology on Greek, but also on Turkish and Albanian, which can be seen in the Aromanian Missal from the second half of the 18th century. In the next centuries, Aromanian religious vocabulary was strongly influenced by Romanian. The contemporary versions of religious texts, including the Bible (e.g. Caciuperi’s translations), introduce a series of Romanian terms instead of the old ones.

The article speaks about selecting a witness for the candidate for the sacrament of Confirmation. This problem has been shaped over the centuries. At the beginning of Christianity, when Confirmation was distributed in connection with the sacrament of Baptism, there was not any witness. It was the fifth century before the question of a witness to assist the person receiving the sacrament of Confirmation appeared in the Church. The Code of Canon Law of 1917 considered all the positions developed over the centuries in the Church and pointed out that if it is possible, a witness should be at Confirmation. In the current Code of Canon Law of 1983, two canons (892 and 893 §1 – 2) presents a legislative interpretation of the problem of witnesses of Confirmation. Putting the same requirements to the witness as to the Godfather, the Church strongly emphasizes the fact that she is the guardian of the sanctity of the Sacraments and she sees a strong bond between the sacrament of Baptism and the sacrament of Confirmation
