Opis:
The catalytic conversion of a model tar compound, namely: naphthalene contained in a simulated producer gas from wood gasification process was investigated. The sol-gel approach was used to create a mesoporous Cepromoted Ni/alumina catalyst with high surface area. A surface area of 333 m2g was achieved by calcination of the mesoporous catalyst (17 wt% Ni and 2.8 wt% Ce) under air conditions at 1123 K. The catalysts were characterized using the N2 adsorption-desorption, XRD, and SEM techniques, and their promotion effect on producer gas reforming and tar removal was studied under dry, steam, and partial oxidation conditions. The Ni-based catalysts effectively converted naphthalene and increased the proportion of H2 and CO in the reformed gas. Incorporating Ce into the catalyst increased the proportion of H2 and CO in the reformed gas, while lowering the amount of CH4 and CO2. In the absence of oxygen, catalytic reforming of the producer gas resulted in 79.6% naphthalene conversion, whereas catalytic partial oxidation conditions resulted in 99.1% naphthalene conversion.

Zastosowano materiały węglowe – węgle aktywne - wytworzone z węgla brunatnego i z węgla kamiennego w roli nośników katalizatorów heterogenicznych.
Carbon materials - activated carbons – obtained from lignite and hard coal were used as carriers for heterogeneous catalysts. For this purpose, catalysts with cerium dioxide and thorium dioxide loaded on these activated carbons were composed. The catalysts contained 5.7% of metal oxide. Furthermore, cerium and thorium catalysts supported on lignite activated carbon were additionally enriched with rhodium in the amount of 2.3%. The specifics of the activity and selectivity of the catalysts was assessed in the conversion of butan-1-ol at the temperature range of 300 - 460C as a test reaction. The butan-1-ol transformations processed without the accessibility of molecular oxygen and, therefore, the conditions were non- -destructive for the surface of carbon carriers. On catalysts containing cerium oxide or thorium oxide, dehydrogenation of butan-1-ol and subsequent bimolecular condensation to heptan-4-one took place with a selectivity of over 70%. On the other hand, both oxides dotted with rhodium catalyzed the conversion of butan-1-ol mainly to n-butyl butanoate with a selectivity of over 50%. Therefore, thorium oxide, also enriched with rhodium, is a relatively highly selective catalyst as a repeatedly proven cerium oxide in the directions of condensation to symmetric ketone or direct transformation to ester, respectively. The results obtained with the use of activated carbon supports obtained from lignite and hard coal differ in their catalytic activity. Catalysts supported on activated carbon from lignite are characterised by a few percent higher conversion and, therefore, yield of ketone than those supported on activated carbon from hard coal. Positive test results indicate beneficial use of the activated carbons as catalyst supports allowing considerable reduction in the amount of catalytically active materials.

Opis:
In this paper, Co,Ce/Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 catalysts with various cobalt loadings for steam reforming of ethanol (SRE) were prepared by microwave-assisted hydrothermal and sol-gel methods, and characterized by XRD, TEM, TPR-H2, N2 adsorption-desorption measurements and cyclohexanol (CHOL) decomposition tests. High ethanol conversion (close to 100%) was obtained for the catalysts prepared by both methods but these ones prepared under hydrothermal conditions (HAp-H) ensured higher hydrogen yield (3.49 mol H2/mol C2H5OH) as well as higher amount of hydrogen formed (up to 70%) under reaction conditions. The superior performance of 5Co,10Ce/HAp-H catalyst is thought to be due to a combination of factors, including increased reducibility and oxygen mobility, higher density of basic sites on its surface, and improved textural properties. The results also show a significant effect of cobalt loading on catalysts efficiency in hydrogen production: the higher H2 yield exhibit catalysts with lower cobalt content, regardless of the used synthesis method.

Opis:
The iron oxide ion exchanger Ferrix A33E was successfully modified with cerium(III) ions to obtain Ferrix A33E-Ce(III) providing much better sorption properties in relation to the As(V) species. The new material has been characterized using a number of techniques including scanning electron microscopy SEM, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy XPS. At optimal pH 6 the main mechanism of arsenate adsorption on A33E-Ce(III) was electrostatic attraction and formation of monodentate and bidentate surface complexes. The process was exothermic and spontaneous. Unlike the unmodified ion exchanger, A33E-Ce(III) could completely remove arsenic from the arsenate solution at a concentration of 50 mg/dm3 in 60 minutes. Furthermore, the maximum sorption capacity for As(V) was determined to be 60.41 mg/g which almost doubled after modification with cerium(III) ions. It is also worth noting that even after three cycles of sorption/desorption A33E-Ce(III) exhibited a higher sorption capacity than unmodified A33E before the arsenate adsorption. It can be concluded that modifying the sorbent with a small amount of cerium(III) ions boosts its sorption properties significantly, improves effectiveness of water purification and reduces the overall operation cost

Opis:
The nature of the Cenomanian–Turonian Oceanic Anoxic Event (CTOAE) and its δ13 C Excursion is considered in the light of (1) the stratigraphical framework in which the CTOAE developed in the European shelf seas, (2) conclusions that can be drawn from new detailed investigations of the Chalk succession at three locations in England, at Melton Ross and Flixton in the Northern Province where organic-rich ‘black bands’ are present, and at Dover in the Southern Province (part of the Anglo-Paris Basin) where they are absent, and (3) how these conclusion fit in with the present understanding of the CTOAE. The application of the cerium anomaly method (German and Elderfield 1990) at Dover, Melton Ross and Flixton has allowed the varying palaeoredox conditions in the Chalk Sea and its sediments to be related to the acid insoluble residues, organic carbon, δ18O (calcite), δ13C (calcite), δ13C (organic matter), Fe 2+ and Mn2+ (calcite), and P/TiO2 (acid insoluble residue). This has provided evidence that the initial stages of the δ13C Excursion in England were related to (1) a drop of sea level estimated at between 45 and 85 metres, (2) influxes of terrestrial silicate and organic detritus from adjacent continental sources and the reworking of exposed marine sediments, and (3) the presence of three cold water phases (named the Wood, Jefferies and Black) associated with the appearance of the cold-water pulse fauna during the Plenus Cold Event. Conditions in the water column and in the chalk sediment were different in the two areas. In the Northern Province, cerium-enriched waters and anoxic conditions were widespread; the δ13C pattern reflects the interplay between the development of anoxia in the water column and the preservation of terrestrial and marine organic matter in the black bands; here the CTOAE was short-lived (~0.25 Ma) lasting only the length of the Upper Cenomanian Metoicoceras geslinianum Zone. In the Southern Province, water conditions were oxic and the δ13C Excursion lasted to the top of the Lower Turonian Watinoceras devonense Zone, much longer (~1.05 Ma) than in the Northern Province. These differences are discussed with respect to (1) the Cenomanian–Turonian Anoxic Event (CTAE) hypothesis when the ocean-continent-atmosphere systems were linked, (2) limitations of chemostratigraphic global correlation, and (3) the Cenomanian-Turonian Anoxic Event Recovery (CTOAER), a new term to define the varying lengths of time it took different oceans and seas to recover once the linked ocean-continent-atmosphere system was over. The possibility is considered that glacio-eustasy (the glacial control hypothesis of Jeans et al. 1991) with the waxing and waning of polar ice sheets, in association with the degassing of large igneous provinces, may have set the scene for the development of the Cenomanian-Turonian Anoxic Event (CTAE).

Opis:
In this study, a rare earth composite precipitation (NaREE(SO4)2H2O, REE: Ce, La, Nd, Pr) powder was prepared from spent nickel hydride batteries, and cerium hydroxide was separated from its constituent rare earth elements. As Ce(OH)3 can be oxidized more easily than other rare earth elements (La, Nd, and Pr), Ce3+ was converted to Ce4+ by injecting air into the leachate at 80°C for 4 h. The oxidized powder was leached using sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Because Ce(OH)4 has low solubility, it can be separated from other elements. Therefore, the pH of the leaching solution was adjusted for selective precipitation. To determine the crystalline phase, recovery, and grade of the recovered Ce(OH)4, the powders were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The grade and recovery rates of the Ce(OH)4 powder recovered from the rare earth composite precipitate using sulfuric acid as the solvent were 95% and 97%, respectively, whereas those of the powder recovered using hydrochloric acid were 96% and 95%, respectively.

Opis:
In recent years there has been an intensive development of industries that use or produce materials in the nano scale. Nanomaterials contribute to the improvement of the product parameters, but when inhaled can also negatively affect the human body. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of cerium oxide nanoparticles on the surface activity of pulmonary surfactant (PS) forming a thin film separating the inhaled air from the alveolar epithelium. Three types of cerium oxide powders were used (Sigma-Aldrich): C1 having a particle size smaller than 25 nm, C2 having a particle size smaller than 50 nm, and for comparison purposes C3 having a particle size smaller than 5 µm. Measurement of specific surface area was carried out using a Gemini 2360 surface area analyzer (Micromeritics, USA). The effect of cerium oxide nanoparticles on the surface activity of PS was studied using DeltaPi microtensiometer (Kibron Inc., Finland). Reconstituted animal surfactant preparation (Beractantum; Abbott Laboratories, France) recommended in states of deficiency of endogenous PS in newborn premature infants, was used as model PS. The tests were carried out at different particle concentrations (ranging up to 1 mg/ml) prepared with the constant concentration of the surfactant solution (1.25 mg phospholipids/ml). The study showed that in all the analyzed cases, the presence of cerium oxide particles caused an increase in surface pressure (lowering of the surface tension) at the liquid-air interface. It was found that the intensity of these changes depends on the particle size, specific surface area and the particle concentration. With the increase in concentrations of the particles in the model surfactant suspension, a greater difference in surface pressure/tension was observed with respect to the initial value. The largest increase in surface pressure (6.4 ± 1.1 mN/m) was observed in the presence of cerium oxide nanoparticles C1, which were characterized by the smallest dimensions (smaller than 25 nm) and the largest surface area (33.3 m2/g). The results show that cerium oxide nanoparticles may have an influence on the surface activity of pulmonary surfactant in vivo and adversely affect the functioning of the human respiratory system.

To examine the efficiency of La and Ce recycling processes from the sludge, two major methods were used, namely leaching and precipitation. The findings suggest that 12% of La and 24.2% of Ce were contained in the sludge. The sludge was leached in an optimum condition of 6N HCl at a temperature of 70°C with a 3g/50 mL solid/liquid ratio for 3 h to obtain a 100% leaching recovery of La and Ce. After pH adjustment of the obtained La and Ce optimum leaching solution to 6 with NH4OH and a simultaneous addition of H2O2 in a ratio of 1:1, Ce precipitated out with 65.9% recovery. On the other hand, La was not precipitated. The results obtained in this study reveal that leaching and pH adjustment method could be used to recover the valuable REE of La and Ce from glass polishing sludge in order to reach the goals of resource recycling.

The purpose of the work was to compare the sensitivity of autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms used in bioassay to lanthanum and cerium under the conditions of a model experiment with aqueous media. Using bioassay methods, the pre-lethal effects of La and Ce in heterotrophic Paramecium caudatum and Escherichia coli, as well as autotrophic Chlorella vulgaris and Nostoc linckia were determined. Model solutions of La2 (SO4)3∙8H2O and Ce2 (SO4)3∙8H2O were tested in the concentration range of 0.1–200 mg/l. As a result, it was shown that heterotrophic organisms are more sensitive to water pollution with La and Ce than autotrophic ones. According to the totality of experiments, cerium turned out to be more toxic than lanthanum. When planning the environmental studies of wastewater or reservoirs polluted with REE, it is recommended to focus on comparative sensitivity of bioassay methods, taking into account the test-functions used: bioassay for chemotaxis of P. caudatum > bioassay for changes in bioluminescence of E. coli (strain M-17) > bioassay for the content of chlorophyll а and intensity of lipid peroxidation in N. linckia > bioassay on the increase in the number of Cl. vulgaris.

Opis:
The paper presents results of investigation on synthesis and characterization of cerium-dysprosium oxide. The input powders - dysprosium oxide Dy,sub>2O3 and cerium oxide CeO2 - were mixed so as to obtain equimolar ratio of cations, milled in alcohol and synthesized via solid state reaction process at 1350°C under 15MPa in vacuum for 2h. The microstructure, phase composition and thermal properties were analyzed. The obtained material was multiphase. Non-stoichiometric compounds were identified. Thermal diffusivity of investigated material decreased in the temperature range of 25-1000°C from 0,71 to 0,45 mm2/s.
