Opis:
Basing on own experiences in studying cemetery space, the possibilities of using LiDAR visualization in acquiring information on changes in the boundaries of Christian and Jewish necropolises were demonstrated on selected examples. The application of the methods indicated in the article comprises the significant supplementation of terrain inspection, considerably expanding knowledge about a given site. The use of digital elevation models has been popular since their introduction, especially in the archaeological community, as it allows for feature recognition without conducting invasive prospection, including excavation. As it has turned out, in the course of the research conducted by the author, the use of LiDAR tools should be an integral part of the geographical analysis. This highlights the need to promote interdisciplinary in the research on cultural heritage sites.

Evangelic cemetery in Brzyno is the subject of the article. The only en¬trance to that cemetery is placed on the north side. Spatial layout is charac¬terized by regularity and symmetry. A visitor, firstly traverses through long birch alley, which next changes into birch-yewen alley led till the main axis in south part where chapel is placed as well. On the right hand side there are only single burials. The best preserved monument in this part is Eckhard Charles Hugon Flieβbach monuments. Left wing of the cemetery is characterized by row, regular setting of graves. Despite being devastated you can still notice original elements of fu¬neral art. Being in the center of cemetery, it is recommended to visit the chapel mentioned before, it was constructed in 1935, inside the chapel you can find two the oldest tombstones of Friedrich Heinrich Gerhard von Zitzewitz and his daughter.

Opis:
Plastyczność, przestrzenność, mistrzowskie operowanie perspektywą i planami, umiejętność wkomponowania nekropolii w najbardziej wydawałoby się niesprzyjające warunki terenowe i optymalne wykorzystanie walorów rzeźbiarskich szczególnie predestynują te budowle do ekspozycji w pełnym słońcu, kiedy ostre promienie wydobywają z najdrobniejszego detalu zdumiewającą grę światła i cieni. Mogiły poległych walczących armii zostały zgrupowanie w dwóch odrębnych zespołach grobowych, pomiędzy którymi ulokowano majestatyczny pomnik centralny z podniosłymi inskrypcjami pióra kapitana Hansa Hauptmanna, poety i oficera w krakowskim Wydziale Grobów Wojennych. O jej rozmiarach świadczą m.in. przedłożone zdjęcia.
The work presents the eminent personage of Heinrich Scholz, a superb Viennese sculptor, ironically described by Jaroslav Hasek as “a scrimshanking volunteer”. During World War I, Scholz was the artistic director of VI Tarnow Unit of War Graves in the area of old Western Galicia. Scholz was a many-talented artist, who could work in wood and stone, and possessed a perfect sense of material. His three-year long work resul- ted in creating over 40 cemetery realizations, characterised by unusual care for detail, precision workmanship, and fitted perfectly into the surrounding landscape. Scholz’s cemeteries, by constituting a relatively compact group from the aesthetic point of view, fit into the vast trend of the “twentieth-century classicism”. That mode is characterized by symmetry, simplicity, horisontalism, frugality in means of expression, solemnity and axiality. Particular designs, because of the variety of architectonic and decorative motifs, emblems and sculptures used by the artist, are unique and root his output among the most valuable creations of classicism, and via the aesthetics of the turn of the 18th and 19th century connect it directly to the artistic inheritance of the antique civilizations of the Mediterranean. Plasticity, spatiality, mastery in using perspective and planes, ability to integrate the necropoles into the seemingly most unfavourable landscape conditions and optimum use of advantages of sculpting, particularly predestine those buildings to be exhibited in bright sunlight, when harsh sun- rays enhance the amazing play of light and shade on the smallest detail. Scholz achieved such effects both in cases of spatially modest mass graves, and enormous cemetery complexes alluding to the idea of landscape parks and stretching over the area from a few to several hectares. Military cemetery no 193 in Dąbrówka Szczepanowska, covering the area of almost 1800 m2 and designed with consideration for the natural landform features, belongs to the latter group. The unique significance of this complex has been confirmed by the fact that the whole neighbouring, area with all the alterations caused by the Great War, has been incorporated into the site (in recent years some of the Russian trenches and bunkers have been reconstructed). Originally it covered over 4 ha and was surrounded with a wire fence on concreto posts. The graves of the fallen from the fighting armies were grouped in two separate grave complexes between which a majestic central monument with solemn inscriptions by Captain Hans Hauptmann, a poet and officer in Krakow Department of War Graves, was situated. However, recently a poor investment has been made within the boundaries of the complex, which insults the memory of the fallen soldiers buried here and undermines the international rank of such a unique war memorial, as can be seen in the enclosed photographs.

Opis:
The article discusses the breakdown of Polish cemetery culture based on the literature of the last quarter century. The cause of the “breakdown” is a model of narcissistic cemetery formed after World War II; it mainly includes the dead worthy of commemoration, or the Poles who died acceptable death, and it excludes the ethnic strangers and unworthy form of death. However, the actions taken after 1989 for the sanctification of the dead Jews proved that death with dignity may also exist outside the narcissistic cemetery. In response, the Polish funerary community creates hysterical cemetery. In this cemetery, the society incorporates odious aspects of death into the mourning culture. The “abominable” content gives the basis for the establishment of the impure cemetery, which may include the death of the excluded, but is extended to the entire living space.

Opis:
To miejsce jedyne w swoim rodzaju.
The place is unique. Its identity has been determined by Polish history, human as the creator of material forms supported by the nature. It is a collective work, continuously shaped for over a century. “Cemeteries are not for the dead, but for the living” – as Wiktor Zin stated. The image, created by successive generations, still can be reinterpreted – as a whole or selectively as individual tombstones and monuments of exceptional artistic value. In Powązki Military Cemetery there can be found traces of activities of recognized artists, whose names and work remain undisplayed in the cemetery. This study aims to highlight some of monuments in order to remove author’s anonymity and to show their work in broader cultural and historical context. The article is a result of numerous visits to the cemetery with a camera in an effort to frame images of monuments. In addition, the paper shows effects of research for data on monuments’ authors. The core cemetery structures were settled in the first years after the First World War. The Polish state established Powązki Military Cemetery as a memorial for the victims of national liberation struggles (January Uprising), the battles of the First World War and the Polish-Soviet War. Subsequent mass burials took place in 1939 and after exhumations of Warsaw Uprising insurgents and civilians in 1945. The communist authorities were not interested in preserving national and Catholic content in culture, therefore in 1964 the necropolis was given more secular character. Its name was changed to “Municipal Former Military Cemetery”. The Lane of Honor was established with the monumental tombs of Bierut, Marchlewski and graves of many members of the contemporary elite, including artists. Leaving aside the limitations imposed by the ideology of the time, state patronage during PRL (Polish People's Republic) period had a positive influence on an artistic quality of projects carried out in the cemetery, for example through the organised competitions. Due to limited accessibility of information about the authors, projects from this period (1960s and 1970s) constitute the majority of examples presented in this article.

Opis:
The cemetery is a place where the sacred and the profane, cultural and religious values overlap. The aim of the following work is a synthetic portrayal of the cultural and religious roles of the cemetery. Their presentation will be based on history divided into five periods characterised by inhumation practices: prehistoric burial, necropolis outside city limits, cemeteries within city limits, burial in churches, modern cemeteries outside city limits. Apart from several exceptions the analysis focuses on burials on the Western European territory. It utilises the source material and the methodology of humanist studies (archeology, history, culture and religion studies) and theology. The location and characteristics of a necropolis has always been shaped by the specific culture of the given community, religious tradition, worldview, geography as well as sanitary considerations. In this sense cemeteries constitute monuments of civilizations, cultures and religions. Despite the changing rules of inhumation throughout time it can be stated that the cultural and religious roles of the cemetery are elementary and irreplaceable. The two roles overlap and creatively cooperate.

Opis:
This article deals with the topic of animal burial sites. The problem was discussed referring to the territory of Poland against the background of examples from abroad. Modern pet cemeteries have been created in our country for a short time, and their issue has not been discussed in any detail so far. Despite the fact that animal cemeteries are a relatively new phenomenon in Poland, it is already possible to notice their typical spatial features. The author, who deals with issues in the field of architecture on a daily basis, tries to describe and evaluate the pet cemeteries from the following angle of interest: location, spatial layout, parcel size, unification, and, on the other hand, the individualization of graves. In the course of the study of the phenomenon of cemeteries for animals in Poland, it turned out that the unsatisfied emotional need is the main driving force behind their formation, so an important element of the work became the analysis of their genesis and form of ownership of pet cemeteries.

Opis:
I. Community Wejherowo which was established in 1643 since its inception enjoyed the status of religious tolerance. Its founder Jakub Wejher withdrew the privilege of free and public confession of Lutheranism shortly before his death in 1657. This state of affairs lasted until the end of the eighteenth century. When in 1772 Prussia and Wejherowo by virtue of the Treaty of Partition were seized by the Prussian state, there has been a change in attitude of the authorities to the Protestant population. Over the next decade there has been the rapid influx of them. On the day Prussia intercepted Wejherowo there were only a few dozen protesters in a town. In 1900 the number increased to more than 2.5 thousand (4002 Catholics). In the first quarter of the nineteenth century Wejherowo evangelicals still belonged in terms of organization to the municipality in Bolszewo. They had their own temple there. Their cemetery quarter was designated back to the time of Jakub Wejher in the parish cemetery at St. Trinity Church in Wejherowo . In 1823 several towns were separated from the municipality in Bolszewo and along with Wejherowo a new Evangelical parish was created. At the time the Lutheran church was founded in the town as well as the cemetery in the suburbs. In the years 1907 - 1909 the community built a new grander temple. Change of the borders and retake of Wejherowo by the Polish state in 1920 caused that most of the Evangelical community from the town emi-grated to Germany. During the interwar period the number of faithful fell to about 400 people in the town. The outbreak of war in 1939 for many Germans in Wejherowo was a willed come back to times before 1920. In March 1945 the Evangelical Church was passed by the Polish mu-nicipalities and counties to the Catholic Church in intention for school youth. Today this place is hosted by Catholic Parish of St. Leon, and the church itself is called St. Stanisław Kostka one. II. Cemetery Establishment of a separate Lutheran cemetery should be combined with the rise and construction of a new parish church in Wejherowo in 1823. The cemetery was built around 1826 on the rustic outskirts of Wejherowo at some distance from the church, located on the main street leading to Bolszewo and further to Lębork. It was the double terrace object of a rectangular shape with dimensions of approximately 180 m x 65 m. After 1945 due to a lack of maintenance the cemetery fell into increasing disrepair. The last official funeral was held there in 1947. In 1951, the transformation of evangelical cemetery into the city park was started. Tombs were leveled and mortuary was demolished as well as brick fence surrounding the cemetery. In 2005, at the initiative of the Association of Cemeteries Remembrance and Burial Places in Wejherowo a memorial boulder commemorating the past of this place was erected in the former Protestant cemetery. In October 2012 archaeological excavations were conducted at the former site of the cemetery. The study has been subjected to a small area of approximately 60 m x 10 m located in the front in the oldest part of the structure. The re- burial of the remains excavated during archaeological works belonging to 45 people took place in November 5th 2012.

The subject of this study is a cultural and poetical analysis of the periphrasable – metaphorical tombstone inscriptions from a Polish cemetery in Adampol (Turkey). Adampol is a Polish village in Turkey. It has been created in 1842. The Polish cemetery located there is a source of interesting information regarding the local Polish society. The tombstone inscriptions show the culture and interference mainly between two different cultures – Polish, closely tied with Christianity, and Turkish, tied with Islam. One of the tombstones analysed shows elements of Hindu culture which makes it a very interesting research material. This paper focuses only on the inscriptions that use figurative language. The material from this cemetery includes only seven tombstones with this kind of epitaphs.

Opis:
Rozprawa traktuje o eminentnych aspektach wojennej twórczości Duszana Jurkovica (1868-1947), znamienitego architekta słowackiego doby przełomu XIX i XX wieku. Analiza stylistyczna powstałych obiektów ujawnia, iż użyte w nich elementy i symbole, umiejętnie przetworzone i zaadaptowane, sięgają do odległych źródeł starożytności i średniowiecza, rezygnując z wojennej retoryki i wyrażając imponderabilia o wartości dla człowieka najistotniejszej.
The treatise discusses the eminent aspects of wartime artistic output of Duszan Jurkovic (1868-1947), an outstanding Slovakian architect of the turn of the 19th and 20th century. Jurkovic had significant artistic achievements and was a pioneer in open - air museum building in Central and Eastern Europe; in the years 1915-1918, he supervised the work on erecting necropolis for the dead heroes within the framework of the Krakow Kriegsgräber - Abteilung. In the area of the 1st district of Żmigród in the former Western Galicia which he supervised, unique cemetery complexes were created which revealed that they had been inspired by regional wooden architecture, as well as by almost all tendencies in European art of the beginning of the 20th century. The stylistic analysis of the erected constructions shows that the elements and symbols used in them, skilfully transformed and adapted, reach back to remote sources from the antiquity and medieval period, thus resigning from wartime rhetoric in favour of expressing imponderable values so essential for humanity. Nimbleness and ease with which the artist moved within separate cultural areas, distant epochs, or philosophical and religious archetypes, are fascinating and bear evidence of the amazing spiritual and cultural heyday of the Habsburg Monarchy on the eve of the Great War, as well as of Jurkovic's personal efforts aimed at realizing the19th-century artistic dream regarding the unity of arts. Three cemetery complexes located in Beskid Niski were evaluated: cemetery no 11 in Wola Cieklińska, no 6 in Krempna, and no 46 on the Beskidek Pass over Konieczna. They reflect the elementary creative intention of Jurkovic, which was to inscribe the wartime necropoles into the broad mainstream of church architecture and to invest them with universal significance of religious character. The iconographic and semantic analysis has revealed the stunning truth: the graves of soldiers are the graves of martyrs, the cemetery ring is a martyrium erected on the site of their martyrdom, and the battlefield is a holy place to which numerous pilgrimages have been made from the lands of the former Empire.

Opis:
The Early Medieval cemetery in Gołuń is archaeologically dated to the period from the end of the 10th c. to the mid-11th c. (Małgorzata Talarczyk-Andrałojć in this volume). The span of use of the cemetery was about 50 years. In the nearest neighbourhood there is no other uncovered and examined cemetery from this period. Only in the second half of the 11th c. did two cemeteries in a close vicinity commence to exist next to each other — Dziekanowice Site 2 and Dziekanowice Site 22. Both are situated on the eastern coast of Lake Lednica (to the north, c. 10 km from Gołuń). The anthropological analysis first of all concerned the age and sex assessment (of adult individuals) (Table 1), the structure of deaths for the examined cemetery (Table 2) and the reconstruction of intravital body height, done individually for each adult individual (Table 5; Table 6). Based on measurements of the long bones of the upper and lower limbs, the average intravital body height of the examined individuals was reconstructed. It was found that the inhumation burials and stray human bones belong to no less than 54 individuals. The bones of 5 individuals were found in 2007, while the bones of another 49 individuals were discovered in 2011 (Table 1). The group of children’s burials was composed of 10 skeletons (or skeleton fragments). Among these, 7 died at the age of Infans I, while three — at the age of Infans II (for one individual the age was assessed as 13–15 years, i.e., the end of Infans II and the beginning of Juvenis). 4 burials were classified as juvenile persons (the age of Juvenis): 3 of these were female burials and 1 was a male burial. 13 individuals died at the age of Adultus: 3 females and 10 males. Yet another burial was that of a woman who died at the age of Adultus–Maturus. 13 individuals died at the age of Maturus: 4 females and 9 males. One man died at the age of Maturus–Senilis. 7 persons: 3 females and 4 males died at the age of Senilis. Gender was assessed for 39 adult or juvenile individuals. 14 female individuals and 25 male individuals were isolated. For 5 individuals their age was assessed as “Adult” (Table 2). The state of health of the examined group can be assessed, with some approximation, on the basis of the changes which have come into existence in the bones [Gładykowska-Rzeczycka, Sokół 2000]. In the group of analysed skeletons, lesions of disease were found within 34 skeletons (Table 1), more often in male than female ones (22:10). Two skeletons with recorded lesions of disease belonged to children (Table 1). The bone material was measured using the anthropometric technique. Individual results for each person are offered in the Tables. A poor state of preservation of the bone material rendered most measurements impossible. The obtained results of intravital body height, separately for women and men, were compared with data for various Early Medieval skeleton series from the territory of Poland. The average height of female individuals (157.9 cm) and male individuals (169.3 cm) buried in the cemetery in Gołuń displays the greatest similarity to a series from Dziekanowice 2 (women 157.0 cm, men 170.1 cm) [Henneberg, Puch 1989: Table 7, p. 153]. We can assume that the group buried in the cemetery in Gołuń was remarkable for their considerable body heights. These values are higher than the average value of this trait in the Early Middle Ages in Poland (men — 165.7 cm, women — 153.6 cm) [Stolarczyk, Lorkiewicz 1993]. Thus, the body height of individuals from this population was above the average in this period. Thanks to the detailed anthropological analysis of the examined bone remains, it was possible to carry out a reconstruction of mortality processes in the group from Gołuń. The distribution of mortality of the examined group (Table 9) diverged from the mortality model which is typical for prehistoric populations [Henneberg, Strzałko 1975; Piontek 1979]. What is absent are evenly distributed frequencies of mortality of the adult individuals, and the frequency of mortality of children too is low (18.5%). If one assumes, however, that this is a reflection of the actual mortality conditions in the examined group, it would be necessary to state that the group from Gołyń does not significantly differ from other groups from the territory of Poland in terms of their biological condition. Differences in values of individual measures, i.e., the percentage of individuals who lived until the age of x (lx), the probability of death (qx), and the average further continuation of life of an individual at the age of x (eo x) (Table 9 and 11), confirm the observations of Janusz Piontek [1979] on the considerable diversification of biological conditions of local groups in historical periods. The anthropological analysis of even such a small and poorly preserved group can be a valuable contribution to the reconstruction of the structure and the age of the dead and the reconstruction of the biostructure of this population. Based on the nature of the changes, we are able to say that in spite of the fact that in a majority of cases the dead suffered from childhood diseases related to periodical malnutrition, they belonged to a “wealthy” group, whose living conditions were at least good. The adult population rather suffered from diseases progressing with age than from too onerous physical labour.

The basic legal act that regulates the management of cemeteries is the Act of 31 January 1959 on cemeteries and burial of the dead, which sets forth that the maintenance and management of municipal cemeteries lies with the respective mayors or governors of the towns and cities where cemeteries are located. NIK auditors examined whether self-governments met their duties in this respect. The detailed audit objectives comprised the evaluation of the regularity of the organisation of tasks related to management and maintenance of municipal cemeteries, the regularity of setting, collecting and accounting for payments for graves, and the regularity of expenditures related to cemeteries maintenance.

The text was written as a kind of short literary guide to the First Communal Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in Modern Athens. The reader is presented with basic facts about the cemetery’s history as well as given a glimpse of what the cemetery looks like since it is very much unlike Polish necropolises. As the First Cemetery is regarded as the largest outdoor collection of the 19th century Modern Greek sculptures, the article contains descriptions of the most famous tombs. Then the author comments on some of the most quoted epitaphs and then focuses on the work of the most famous poets and writers that rest at the First Cemetery. He focuses on how they approached the topic of passing and death. The guide to this exceptional place is the protagonist of the Christos Chomenidis’ story, i.e., a man who was brought back to life on the First Cemetery on the day of the Second Coming.

Opis:
This article attempts to determine the relative chronology of the Kietrz cemetery of the Lusatian culture proceeding from the stylistic development of forms and ornamentation of vessels coming from selected pottery inventories. The co-occurrence matrix of forms and ornaments, developed from the sources described above, was examined using correspondence analysis. Graphic representation of the results forms a quite distinct arc-shaped layout in the plot of two principal axes. Correspondence analysis was also conducted for the identified types of decoration. The results, transposed into a two-dimensional diagram, show a different, not arch-like distribution. Objects and variables form two separate clusters. Detailed analysis of the two diagrams allowed for many valuable conclusions: (1) phases of vessel form development are polythetic assemblages, which means that they are formed by specific combinations of attributes or their frequencies rather than by strictly defined sets of phase-unique attributes; (2) in the development of pottery forms, one can observe a continuous evolution between phases BrC2 and HaC, i. e. in the period spanning nearly 800 years (ca 1380–600 BC). This confirms earlier conclusions, based on planigraphy data, concerning the uninterrupted functioning of the cemetery; (3) development of pottery decoration followed a different pattern – a “revolutionary” change in HaA was followed by a continuous development until the end of early Hallstatt period, when a regression in pottery ornamentation probably took place; (4) there is some discrepancy between the present results and M.Gedl’s chronology with respect to the older phases of vessel form and decoration development (among other things, the present results suggest dating the appearance of bossed decoration as early as BrC2).

In the summer of 2015, a preliminary visit was carried out by the authors with the goal of identifying and documenting archaeological cemeteries as well as giving a relative chronology of them at two villages of Kuik and Qaleh Bahadori in the Zahāb Plain, located in Sarpol-e Zahāb County in Kermānshāh province of Iran. Numerous tombs were identified in four cemeteries. Mostly they were located in the hillside of mountains. The pile of stones on the ground can be an indicator to assess them. Structurally all tombs are the same. All around the tomb's wall was elevated with different size of stones in several rows; after putting the dead body, the tomb has been covered with three or four cap stones. Then the pile of stones was put on top of it. Nevertheless these cemeteries were been looted by smugglers, still some intact tombs can be seen among them. Unfortunately, no cultural materials were found in these areas except for few potsherds; so this caused some difficulties to date the tombs. The morphology of their structure and comparative study with peripheral regions suggest probable chronology of Iron Age III for the tombs. It is evident that certain results will be achieved on the basis of archaeological excavations.

Osmołowo (Bel. Asmolava) is a village located near the town of Kletsk (Pol.=Bel. Kleck) in the eastern territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (today south-west Belarus). Since the middle of the 16th century it had been the centre of the Tatar settlement in the Kletsk Duchy which was the property of the Radziwiłł noble family. The only Tatar cemetery that has been preserved in Osmołowo until today had been founded at the beginning of the 19th century. The oldest grave with an inscription dates back to 1805. We have discovered 27 inscriptions from the 1st half of the 19th century The epigraphical tradition in Osmołowo at that time represented similar trends as in other cemeteries of the Polish-Lithuanian Tatar gentry. The inscriptions had been composed of Arabic or Turkish confessional formulas (mainly shahada) and of the information about the deceased (name, date of death, military ranks, family affiliation) in Polish, written in Latin and/or Arabic script. In the next decades of the 19th century, the inscriptions developed in the same way as in other cemeteries of the small-town communities of the Tatars during this period which meant that the Arabic script was used both for the confessional section and informative section (in Polish or Belorussian), and introduction of more varied Arabic or Turkich eschatological formulas as ayat 3:182, and Turkish invocations Allāh raḥmet eylesin (Tur. “Let the God have mercy”), ey ğennet müyesser eyle (Tur. “O, paradise, be accessible”) which eventually transformed into Allāh raḥmet eyle ğennet firdeuse (Tur.-Per. “O, God, have mercy, heaven, paradise”).

Research in the years 2004 - 2006 covered an area of 1770.5 sq. meters and yielded more than 125 objects containing material (nos 310, 424 -549), and about 70 structures distinguished only on the basis of a different color. With the Trzciniec Culture settlement a dozen or so of pits and post-holes can be connected. Approx. 50 urn graves damaged and one pit grave should be ascribed mainly to the early and middle phases of the Tarnobrzeg Group. After nine seasons of work, a total examined area amounts to about 44 ares. The subsequent phases of the use of this site are mirrored by grave of the Mierzanowice Culture (no. 303), 70 pits and about 40 post-holes related to the settlement of the Trzciniec Culture and, finally, more than 370 graves and about 50 clusters of pottery and burned human bones (remains of destroyed graves? ) of all phases of the Tarnobrzeg Group. The cemetery can be considered as fully investigated.

Opis:
In 2004-2006, excavations were continued at the biritual cemetery of the Częstochowa-Gliwice sub-group of the Upper Silesian-Little Poland group of the Lusatian culture at Zbrojewsko site 3. An area of 9.8 ares were uncovered and 64 objects were explored. In 2004-2005, the research aimed to catch the northern boundary of the cemetery. It was confirmed that in the north-western the border of the cemetery constitutes the valley of a small stream. However, the research failed to find the north-eastern boundary, although objects recorded in this area were not so numerous. Graves dated at the fourth period of the Bronze Age still dominated there. In 2006, excavations were carried out on the southern outskirts of the cemetery, at the edge of the first terrace level of the Liswarta River. The discovery of 31 graves confirmed previous suspicions that in this area there may be another large concentration of graves from the youngest Bronze Age, analogous to those already identified in the northern and western parts of the cemetery. Among the objects studied there were 23 cremation graves (usually pit graves), and seven or eight skeletal ones (one perhaps symbolical). Most of the graves had stone structures. Two urn graves can be dated to the fourth period of the Bronze Age, while all the other graves, discovered in 2006, to the fifth period.

This article presents results on social infrastructure of burial character (cemeteries, crematoria) located in the rural areas in Poland taking into account its influence on spatial development and society. To achieve the goal, villages were chosen from each Province where in the years 1989- 2019 burial facilities were implemented (36 objects), including: communal cemeteries (22 objects), parish cemeteries (8 objects), crematoria (6 objects). Analysis were carried out in accordance with the top-down principle, taking into account: planning documents, spatial and functional structure, context of burial objects, its location in the relation to the transport infrastructure, other religious facilities, development of buffer and social role. Research shows that the number of communal cemeteries and crematoria in the rural areas increased (which is associated with social acceptance for cremation process in Poland); this also applies to durability of cemetery composition and desacralization of its surrounding. Social infrastructure connected with burial should be an integrated part of rural landscape; that is why recommendations were elaborated.

Fear is a characteristic feature of many legends. And the fear of the death is probably our deepest fear. Death is a crucial event in folk culture, as it triggers an existential crisis which must be duly managed. The living need to distance themselves from the dead in order not to lose their own “presence” in the world. To maintain this distance, people can rely on a dedicated place, the cemetery, where the fear of the dead can be mastered and framed in a sacred dimension. Cemetery may be regarded as a liminal, hybrid space, connecting life and death, the human and the divine, the visible and the invisible. Hence, it can turn into a critical, dangerous place, a “legend landscape”, where odd, mysterious, frightening encounters are possible or, at least, believable. This is especially so if one enters a cemetery at night, when it is forbidden to the living and the darkness creates the perfect stage for fearsome presences. In the ATU 1676B narrative type, an individual bets to enter a cemetery at night in order to show her/his courage and/or refute the belief of the dead as ghosts, but this gamble results in a death from fright. A different case concerns the fate of those who face the night in the cemetery with genuine courage and respect towards the dead, as in a folktale collected by W.B. Yeats (ATU 326), and a (true) story of a woman sleeping in the cemetery (Motif Index C735.2.5). Overall, the cemetery emerges as an ideal setting for a cautionary tale, through which local communities meditate on key issues such as death, fear and belief/non-belief.

Opis:
This work discusses the results of rescue excavations in the Early Medieval row cemetery in Gołuń, the Pobiedziska Commune. 17 ares were examined, out of which the necropolis took up the area of 13.21 ares. Prehistoric and Late Medieval finds were also recorded in the cemetery. The cemetery in Gołuń is situated in the Gniezno Lake District, in an area which is pretty diversified with regard to its hypsometry. There are a few more prominent rises of terrain, and one of these, located near a small watercourse, was occupied by the examined necropolis (Fig. 1). All immovable features and finds related to the cemetery were discussed in detail in the catalogue. The catalogue is divided into two principal parts — one of which contains descriptions of graves, including those preserved in situ and destroyed, while the other iscusses the remaining features found within the necropolis: empty grave pits and bonfires. All the graves contained inhumation burials and the dead were buried directly at the bottom of grave pits (perhaps in one case the body was covered with bog soil). 42 graves in situ containing one burial in each were discovered. Further discoveries included 1 grave with the remains of 2 persons as well as bones belonging to 10 individuals, which came from destroyed graves. Almost all out of the 44 burials which were not destroyed were located along the E–W axis or with some deviation to the N and S from it, according to the alignment of the grave pits. The arrangement of skeletons from two graves (24 and 38) which are aligned along the N–E axis is at variance with this principle. Furthermore, these two graves disturb the row arrangement of the cemetery. On the other hand, one can see some sort of regularity for the cemetery in Gołuń, as women were deposited with their heads to the west and men — with their heads to the east. The anthropological analysis demonstrates that most of the dead were men (26 persons — c. 48%), while the women were buried in 14 graves (nearly 26%). Persons whose sex was not assessed constituted about 26% altogether, including children. The nature of the grave inventories (recorded in c. 61.5% of graves) and the co-occurrence of given funds were analysed (Tables 1–2). Deformations of bone materials (e.g., a successful skull trepanation was recorded) as well as the stratigraphy of this basically single-layer cemetery are also discussed. In the work an analysis of all the portable finds discovered in the cemetery was carried out. 3 groups of finds were isolated: artefacts and tools of daily use (knives — 17 items in the graves and 1 in a secondary deposit; a bronze fitting of a leather knife sheath, vessels — 4 in the graves, 1 in the top of an empty grave pit, 1 in a secondary deposit; 2 staved buckets with iron rims; 4 phyllite whetstones; 1 double fire striker; an iron hoof; a clay spindle whorl, an iron awl and 4 artefacts with unclear functions), weaponry (a Type M iron axe and two pairs of spurs belonging to Type I:2 according to Hilczerówna, including one with a pair of buckles) and ornaments (2 silver temple rings; 2 necklaces having 9 beads each — Tab. 3, including 2 mosaic beads; a bronze bell-shaped pendant) and a single find — a silver clump. Concerning other features discovered in the area of the cemetery in Gołuń, 5 features were classified as unused grave pits based on their formal traits, while one of these may have been a cenotaph (a vessel was found in the top of this feature). Another two features — bonfires, which did not disturb graves but overlapped them — are believed to have been related to post-funeral ceremonies. C14 dating (AD 985–1043, cf. Fig. 21) demonstrates that the functioning of the cemetery in Gołuń should be dated to between the late 10th and the mid-11th c. This is also coherent with the results of a typological-chronological analysis of the discovered finds: such as first of all the Type M axe (finds from Greater Poland are dated to the first half of the 11th c.), Type I iron spurs (chiefly dated to the 10th-mid-11th c. in Central and Northern Europe), and a silver bead taken from an earring of Type Świątki, which were in use from the mid- 10th to the late 11th c., or perhaps only to the mid-11th c. Two glass polyhedral mosaic beads with a few groups of “eyelets,” probably coming from Scandinavia or Rus’, are dated to about 1000 and they belong to artefacts with a more precise chronology among those found in the “Gołuń” necropolis. Both temple rings found in the cemetery are dated to between c. the mid-10th c. and the early (?) 13th c. However, their small dimensions (Variant A according to Kóčka-Krenz) rather suggest the first half of this period. Furthermore, the co-occurrence of clay vessels of the Type Menkendorf-Szczecin and Type Vipperov demonstrate that we are dealing with partially slow-wheel made forms which became obsolete and the occurrence of fully slow-wheel made vessels. Therefore, it is justified to propose the first half of the 11th c. as the chronology for the pottery finds. Phyllite whetstones have one quality which confirms the assumed chronology of the cemetery, as in the Baltic Sea zone they have been most commonly discovered among finds from the 10th–11th c. Bronze bell-shaped pendants and staved buckets with iron rims are most often recorded in Poland in necropolises dated to the 10th/11th–11th c. The remaining artefacts, such as the fire striker, the hoof, some other types of beads and the bronze fitting of the leather sheath of a knife, although having a broader chronology, are also discovered in grave inventories which are contemporary to the cemetery in Gołuń. Furthermore, the fittings of knife sheaths with extended upper parts (as it is the case with the Gołuń find) occurred already in finds from early phases in Birka. The sparse stratigraphic relations between the graves, their low number and the relatively small area of the necropolis also suggest that it was in use for a rather short period of time. The necropolis in Gołuń belongs to a type of Early Medieval row cemeteries, which were not located next to churches. It is possible to isolate two zones of this burial ground. The main one — the southern, western and northern parts — consisted of 4 rows, running from the north to the south. However, the arrangement of some parts (especially the central one) is disturbed (Fig. 5). The cemetery with such a spatial layout is adjoined from the south-east by a much smaller cluster of 17 graves (2–3 rows), some of them overlapping each other. Within these two main parts of the necropolis one could make an attempt at isolating smaller units of division. This brings some order and reveals a better spatial organization of the cemetery in Gołuń. This is a hypothetical division, as no traces of fences were recorded in the course of excavation works. When analysing the positions of the graves in the cemetery in Gołuń one can isolate as many as 10 such smaller zones/quarters, which were marked with Roman letters from I to X (Fig. 22). The central part of the necropolis in Gołuń is taken up by Quarter I, with dimensions of c. 8 × 10 m. Only 4 graves were located in it, but they stand out with regard to their grave furnishings. In an empty square which can be seen in the centre of the southern part of the cemetery in Gołuń, no remains were discovered, which could imply an existence of any structure fulfilling a role of a sacral building, e.g., a small wooden church or a cemetery chapel. On the basis of the number of discovered graves and taking the data on destroyed burials into consideration, one can suppose that the cemetery was used by a small local community for some dozen years. Among the finds which were recorded together with the burials of the dead, one’s attention is attracted to grave goods which testify to the formation of a group of warriors, related to the Early Piast monarchy — which was coming into existence at that time. There is no doubt that two women buried with necklaces composed of 9 beads each, belonged to the group of wealthier members of the community using the necropolis. The knife in a leather sheath which is fitted with a bronze sheet with rich ornamentation, which was found in Grave 30, should also be regarded as a luxurious artefact. The analysis of the Archaeological Record of Poland’s research results, demonstrated that the cemetery is situated on the edge of an area which was used in an enormously intensive manner in the Early Middle Ages. The cemetery in Gołuń was probably one of the burial grounds which were used by this broader community, inhabiting the mentioned settlements.

Cmentarze są istotną częścią przestrzeni publicznej każdego miasta. O jej wyjątkowości stanowi niezwykłe połączenie przeciwieństw, takich jak utylitaryzm i duchowość, estetyka i ekonomia, wspólność i indywidualizm, przeszłość i przyszłość.
Cemeteries are an important element of every city. The uniqueness of this particular space is based on a connection of some of the features and properties often standing against each other in opposition, such as utilities and spirituality, aesthetics and economics, generality and individualism, past and future. We expect the cemeteries should fulfill the role of space worthy of burying our loved ones. We would like to be sure that nothing would disturb the silence and contemplation mood, and in the visual sphere, that nothing would bring down the special atmosphere of the sacred place. But like everything around, cemeteries are changing too. Their designers are facing new challenges. Customs, traditions and the mentality of societies are evolving and changing to varying degrees. This article is an attempt of tracking the changes of contemporary cemeteries. Will the new concepts and visions of eternal rest still bear the features of the sacred? Whether in this particular area, there is any chance of “progress”, development and changes? Does the legacy of tradition and religion reduce creative field, new concepts of composition, innovative possibilities of burials, new technological capabilities? The Author is going to show how important is the integration of different, often remote areas such as aesthetics, economics, cultural heritage, ethics, ecology, to compose a space that meets the requirements of all these areas, and above all, which is the space of the sacred, which is still, and in different cultures, expected from cemeteries.

Opis:
At the beginning of February 2018, in connection with the ongoing investment in the Basilica of Bernardine church in Rzeszów (the church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rzeszów) comprehensive archaeological works were conducted. They were performed by the Foundation for Archaeological centre in Rzeszów. The excavations were carried out due to the fact that during the renovation of the church and the replacement of the floor, human remains and two crypts were found. It is worth noting that within the Bernardine church no archaeological research had been previously conducted, even in the form of keeping a watching brief. Two archaeological sondages (A and B) were established during the exploration of the porch. In the course of exploration of the first trial trench burial pits with human remains were discovered. At the 50–70 cm level, the only well-preserved skeleton in an anatomical order, oriented along the north-south line (grave 12) was registered. With reference to one of the burials deposited at 90–110 cm (grave 22), a coin was found. It was located under the skull of the deceased, adjacent to the jaw and leaving a characteristic greenish discoloration on the bone. The last level at which human burials were registered was the level of 110–130 cm. The graves revealed traces of destruction by other burials or reburials with a mixed context of human remains. The second trial trench, 1.5x0.5 m, in the form of a small test pit was studied at the southern, primary entrance to the church (sondage B). During the exploration, human bones were uncovered in a mixed context that did not form any clear clusters. By conservator’s decision, the boundaries of excavations were gradually expanded to reveal as much foundation as possible and, at the same time, confirm or refute the legend about the burial of the church founder under the threshold in the porch. According to historical sources, it was Mikołaj Spytek Ligęza, who wished (in his will written on August 7, 1637) to be buried under the threshold of the church porch. The results of the research did not confirm this legend. The movable material remains chronologically correspond to the 15th to 18th centuries. With regard to uncovered ceramic forms, pots dominated among pottery vessels. A fragment of a bowl and a plate were also noted. Similar forms of vessels were known from Rzeszów. Another group of artefacts were metals, including iron nails and coffin closing staples, as well as corroded lumps, wires and wheels difficult to identify, probably associated with the equipment and construction of coffins. In addition, a fragment of the iron horseshoe protector and two coins were discovered. To sum up, it is worth noting that archaeological research carried out within the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Rzeszów created a unique opportunity for conducting archaeological intervention research. It brought a number of new and valuable information about the history of the city. In the course of excavations, archaeologists discovered the remains of a church cemetery, which undoubtedly surrounded the former wooden church existing on the site of the present building.

Luboszyce culture

Opis:
The cemetery in Sadzarzewice (former Sadersdorf) is one of the most important archaeological sites in Lower Lusatia and it dates back to the pre-Roman and Roman iron ages. It was included into the Luboszyce culture by Grzegorz Domański in his work from 1979. Along with two other cemeteries, located nearby in Grabice and Luboszyce, the Sadzarzewice complex constitutes the oldest chronological horizon of this taxonomic group, and the region is regarded as the starting point of its later expansion. Despite the site’s great significance for the prehistory studies of the Oder basin, its state of study is far from satisfactory. This is mostly due to the fact it was discovered and explored at the end of the XIXth century, that is in the time archaeological methods were still in development. Further complication was caused by the history of the region – nearly all of the artifacts were lost during WWII, and as an effect, the cemetery’s inventory is known only from a publication dating back to 1895. Nevertheless, during my research for my dissertation on the armament of the Luboszyce culture, I managed to identify a couple of those lost finds. This small group consisted of an ornamented spearhead, an untypical javelin- or arrowhead, and a shield grip. The total number of Roman iron age weapon and equestrian equipment finds from the cemetery is 41 – 4 swords, 2 sword scabbard belt loops, 2 axes, 6 spearheads, 2 javelin heads, 7 arrowheads, 4 shield bosses, 2 shield grips and 12 spurs. The artifacts from Sadzarzewice fit into the phase B2b–C2 (late 2nd–3rd cent. A.D.) range. Those weapons that were possible to date with considerable precision can be situated within the phase C1, some even can be as old as B2b, although there is no certain evidence of such early chronology. Another notable feature of the Sadzarzewice artifacts is the evidence of various interregional influences – either from the West (the Elbian circle) and East (the Wielbark and Przeworsk cultures) which phenomenon, although characteristic for the Luboszyce culture in general, is best observed in the early stages of this unit’s development.

The multicultural site 1 at Michałowice has long attracted the attention of archaeologists. Since the 1950’s, artefacts attributed to the Przeworsk culture have been discovered from time to time in fields near the administrative border between the Michałowice and Ciuślice villages. This resulted in an initial, small-scale salvage excavation of the site, which revealed skeleton burials of the Lusatian culture, as well as skeleton and cremation burials attributed to the Przeworsk culture. The excavations conducted in 2008–2010 uncovered 53 archaeological features, attributed to the Trzciniec, Lusatian and Przeworsk cultures. Among the most remarkable discoveries were human and horse burials connected with the Trzciniec culture and the Early Roman Period groove-type features from the Przeworsk culture cemetery.

Pokój to miejscowość położona w województwie opolskim. W XVIII w. wzniesiono tu książęce założenie rezydencjalne, Carlsruhe, w formie gwiaździstej kompozycji z centralnym placem, ogrodami i parkami. Współcześnie trzy cmentarze: ewangelicki, katolicki i żydowski stanowią świadectwo wielokulturowej przeszłości wsi Pokój.
Pokój is a village located in the Opole voivodeship. In the 18th century a princely complex Carlsruhe was erected here, in the form of a radiant composition with a central square, gardens and parks. The place became a cultural and craft center, also a health spa since the 19th century. Destruction in 1945 interrupted this development, the former Carlsruhe became a commune village Pokój. At present three cemeteries: Evangelical, Catholic and Jewish constitute the evidence of a multicultural past of Pokój village. In the article the history of these cemeteries is presented, composition and location in the village’s layout characterized, their state of preservation studied and individual aesthetic values of each necropolis indicated.

The paper discusses funeral practices with regard to animals in ancient Berenike, investigated in two seasons of exploration, 2018 and 2019 (trenches BE18/19-107, BE01/19-48 and BE19/132). Three groups of animals are represented almost exclusively in the burials. These are cats, dogs and monkeys, buried mainly around the top and on what was the eastern slope of a sand dune. In the mid 1st century AD, an enclosure wall roughly 0.50 m thick was built enclosing a space of about 20 m2 with no apparent floor surface inside it. Outside the wall, a clay pavement surrounded the enclosure on at least three sides. Animal burials accumulated around this enclosure for the next century or so, achieving the greatest density close to the feature. By the 2nd century AD urban rubbish had encroached heavily upon the area taken up by the burials. Most likely in the beginning of the 3rd century AD, the wall was dismantled, perhaps together with the features that had been inside the enclosure (statue, column, tree?). Interestingly, two goats were buried by the two excavated corners (northeastern and northwestern ones) in this period. One of these represented a variant of the species not typical of Northeastern Africa.

Contemporary tombstone inscriptions in the Griva cemetery in Daugavpils as inspiration for a scientific research on national identityThe memorial inscriptions found in the Griva cemetery in Daugavpils [Latvia] are a valuable source for scientific research on borderland communities. As well as being a multilingual region the Daugavpils area is characterized by mixed marriages, particularly between people of Polish and Russian origin. The religion of those who have deceased is of the most lasting importance; that which is understood as passed down from generation to generation. The language used in the inscriptions is the result of a complex decision-making process. This takes into account not only religious and national identity but also the will of the deceased, their place of burial and local traditions.

The excavations on the cemetery were conducted in the years 1938–2007. There was uncovered 1504 graves, 900 are of the Przeworsk culture and others from II–V period of the Bronze Age and Halsztadt C/D. The typical feature of the burial rite on this cemetery as well as others necropolises of the Górnośląsko-Małopolska Group of the Lusatian Culture is occurrence contemporaries crematory and skeletal burials side by side. The cremation graves dominated only 20% were skeleton burials. Most grave are connected with IV and V period of the Bronze Age only 15% are earlier (II and III period). The basic aim of the present study was to determine interrelations between the type of burial furnishings as well as sex and age of the buried individuals. One only can state that furnishings in grave were probably connected with social position of the dead. Possibly other rules were practiced in infants graves because part of them were richly equipped.

The article presents new radiocarbon determinations obtained for collective graves from the Trzciniec cultural circle (TCC) in Central Poland. The dated graves were associated with the Konstantynów group and belong to the late phase of the TCC. As a result of the research carried out on this form of burial, it was possible to distinguish two types of graves and locate their concentrations in Central Poland in the zone where the materials of the Konstantynów group occur. The established dates, together with the technological and stylistic analysis of ceramic materials, make it possible to determine two time horizons in the late phase of the Trzciniec culture circle.

There were discovered 41 objects, including 35 graves and six small pits, presumably post-holes. A majority of burials were urn graves but ash graves have also been recorded. Burials are generally characterized by a relatively wide range of equipment, including weapons, i.a. swords imported from the Roman Empire. Preliminary analysis of inventories acquired so far indicates that the Prusiek necropolis should be dates back to the turn of the Early and Younger Roman Period, another words to the decline of the B2 phase and the phase C1a (with a distinctive within it the B2/C1 horizon). Materials from the cemetery at Prusiek show clear links with the so-called eastern zone of the Przeworsk Culture.

Archaeological research in the 2012 and 2013 seasons was focused on excavations in area U in the northwestern part of the site of Kom el-Dikka in Alexandria. Previously discovered structures of early Roman age continued to be explored. A large forica and other buildings have been found to follow an unusual, strictly geographical orientation, the reason for which has yet to be ascertained. A large group of burials belonging to three successive phases of the early Islamic cemetery (8th–12th century AD) was excavated in the same area. Additional testing in already cleared auditoria T, U and B as well as next to auditorium H helped to verify issues of stratigraphy and chronology of the academic complex to which these auditoria belonged. Preservation work focused mainly on an overhaul of the mosaic shelter (Villa of the Birds), including treatment of mosaic floors. Equally important tasks were the conservation of remains of domestic architecture in area W1N, restoration of a well in the cistern (area L), and finally preservation of auditorium RS.

Opis:
Antoni Messing (ca. 1821-1867) the owner of the stone workshop located in Warsaw on 6 Powązkowska Street (mtge. 27C) is currently most famous for one monument- the Statue of the Virgin Mary of Immaculate Conception which was placed in front of the Church of St Antony of Padua on Senatorska Street (1851). What made this monument different from other independently standing monuments was the use of lanterns which at evening time illuminated the statue of the Virgin (1853). The innovative idea spread not only around Warsaw, but also outside the city boundaries. References to the monument elevated by Messing were not limited to the way and form of illuminating the statue. The inventory research conducted on Warsaw cemeteries ena-ble the extraction of a group of tombstones imitating the shape and the decor of the plinth of the statue of the Virgin. The number of examples of this collection of tombstones numbers 19. Their execution dates back to the period 1853-1874 - with one exception only, all of them were elevated during the period of Antoni Messing’s ownership of the stone workshop. All of them represent the same commemoration in the form of a crucifix located on a plinth. Exam-ples can be separated into two groups. One, comprising 8 tombstones, the closest to the origi-nal, the other, comprising 11 examples preserves the architectural structure without the sculp-tural decor. The origin of the formal concept is to be traced in the project of Henryk Marconi’s garden vase designed for Wilanowski Park (ca. 1845-1851) as well as the finishing elements of the Stanisław and Antoni Potocki’s tombstones. Consequently, the contribution of Messing consists in the creation of the series of tombstones modeled on the statue of the Virgin Mary rather than the originality of the project.

The death of the park after 1945 is interpreted in connection with wildness, darkness, decline, transgression as well as being beyond culture and social emotions.

Opis:
Textile production during the Hallstatt period was an integral part of everyday life of societies living in Poland. However, discoveries of fabrics are very rare. Textile remains from this period survived primarily in the skeletal bi-ritual graves in the Silesia voivodship. Among preserved fragments of organic finds, remains of clothes and elements of accessories can be distinguished. The best-preserved and well-studied textile remains come from the cemetery in Świbie, Gliwice district. The locality was accidentally discovered in 1930s, but regular excavations started there thirty years later. As a result of the archaeological works, 576 cremation urns and skeletal graves were explored providing a rich set of materials. Grave goods were local products, as well as imports from Southern and Western Europe. Sixty three graves contained remains of textiles. The majority of the surviving fabrics adhered to metal outfits. In addition, research encountered woven tape remains, braided ribbons, threads, and strings. The material acquired from the cemetery in Świbie is the largest textile collection from the Hallstatt period discovered in Poland. It waited in a museum warehouse until the year 2015 when the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Łódź initiated further studies. Despite the fact that most fragments were small and mineralised, all the undertaken analyses led to a better understanding of textile production in the Hallstatt period in Poland with its innovative and traditional elements.

Opis:
The article clarifies the role of the Olshany cemetery in Prague as a location for the memory of Ukrainians and about Ukrainians. Olshany is one of the largest necropolises of prominent Ukrainians outside Ukraine. Most Ukrainians buried here became emigrants as a result of the defeat of the Ukrainian National Revolution of 1917-1921. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the perception of this necropolis among Ukrainians, to show some aspects of mentions of Olshany in the Ukrainian information space and to find out its possible role as a place of memory. The topic of Olshany became more active in the Ukrainian media in 2017 due to the threat of losing the grave of one of the most prominent Ukrainian poets of the early twentieth century – Oleksandr Oles (Kandyba) and his wife. The periodicity of attention to Olshany is explained by the interest of Ukrainians in the subject of the Ukrainian National Revolution of 1917-1921, which also acquires a greater resonance closer to the memorable dates. Members of the Ukrainian governments buried in the cemetery, including Fedor Shvets, Stepan Siropolko, Volodymyr Leontovych, Sofi a Rusova, Hryhoriy Sydorenko, Apollinarii Marshynsky, as well as scientists and artists Spiridon Cherkasenko, Mykola Andrusov, Yevhen Ivanenko and others, together with the military UGA, are very important part of the memory of Ukrainian post-revolutionary emigration, and involve people in understanding their destinies through the fields in which they were engaged before, during and after the Revolution. Th at is why Olshany already acts as a place of memory for Ukrainian historians, teachers, diplomats, etc. But given the professional diversity of the people buried there and the significant legacy they have left behind, this place has greater potential. And new generations of Ukrainians who work or study in the Czech Republic now can contribute even more to this.

Shrinkage of urban green space has led to the disruption of the ecological balance. Population growth, industrial expansion, development activities and land encroachment reduce the vegetation cover of metropolitan cities including Lahore, Pakistan. Presently, Lahore is on top of all metropolitan cities in the world having worst air quality index (AQI). Thus, monitoring of the vegetation cover in urban areas is the ultimate need of the day for the conservation and protection of environment which is also the agenda of new government (Clean and Green Pakistan). Besides, Honorable Lahore High Court has also passed an order to plant trees in the oldest and biggest graveyard of Lahore to tackle the climate change issue. Considering the above-mentioned facts, the current research was carried out for the first time in Lahore, Pakistan to analyze the vegetation cover using spatio-temporal technique. For vegetation cover assessment, spatial techniques were used in the present study viz. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Transformed Normalized Vegetation Index (TNDVI), Difference Vegetation Index (DVI) and supervised classification. On the basis of high magnitude of smog and air pollution issue, four recent years were selected, i.e. 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 to observe ground reality. The results of the study revealed the depletion of vegetation cover in cemeteries at an alarming rate. Furthermore, the results of study revealed no significant change in green cover in Miani Sahib after the passing order of Lahore High Court of plantation in the graveyard.

Almost 200 places of burial of soldiers of both annies fighting in the First World War have survived in the region of Łódż. They include cemeteries and cemetery Sections where soldiers fighting in the so-called battle of Łódż, which took place in 1914, found their last resting place. One of these cemeteries is in Szadkowice, and even though it does not really stand out from other resting places of the battle of Łódż soldiers, it deserves our attention. The cemetery in Szadkowice located on the edge of the forest survived the interwar period, when many mass graves were liquidated and bodies exhumed to nearby cemeteries. The original number of 21 buried bodies grew then to nearly 180, and the cemetery became a mass grave of Germans, Russians and Austro-Hungarians and kind of lapidarium.

Excavation in Metsamor in 2016 was focused on the settlement area as well as necropolis. Extended trenches uncovered a substantial part of the settlement and contributed new stratigraphic and chronological data on the three phases of occupation, especially the heavy fire that appears to have destroyed the buildings in the early 8th century BC. A unique find from this level of destruction was a necklace made of sardonyx, agate and gold beads. In the post-Urartian period, the northeastern part of the settlement was clearly rearranged. Exploration of a kurgan tomb in the cemetery showed that the tomb had been reused for the most recent burial, looted, which may have included a symbolic horse burial. The construction of the tomb, based on finds from a layer at the bottom of the burial chamber, which included several golden adornments and beads of different materials, can be dated to the Middle Bronze Age, the latest burials to the Iron I period.

The Polish–Egyptian mission at Kom el-Dikka, ran by the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw, stepped up the already advanced preservation processes aimed at establishing an Archaeological Park at the site. Conservation work was carried out in the theater portico, the bath complex and the residential quarter of late Roman date in the eastern part of the excavation area. In turn, the western part was the focus of archaeological research centered on the exploration of some late Roman structures located underneath. The early medieval/Islamic cemetery overlying these remains was explored first. A detailed report from this work is appended to this article. The human skeletal remains from the cemetery were examined by anthropologists. The western gate to the bath complex, leading from the theater portico, was fully exposed. Finds from present and earlier work at the site continued to be studied: glass vessels, pottery, lamps, bone objects, painted wall plaster, and a vast collection of coins.

Kształtowane w różnych epokach, różnych rejonach i pod wpływem różnych kultur stanowią zawsze ważny, łatwo rozpoznawalny element krajobrazu kulturowego podkreślający odrębność i tożsamość miejsca.
Cemeteries are a specific group of park arrangements whose aim is to commemorate and remind visitors of the people resting there. Irrespective of the epoch, region and culture they are a product of, they are always important and recognizable elements of the cultural landscape, emphasizing the individuality and identity of the place. The cemetery as a place of eternal rest and a material component of the landscape also constitutes its non-material component connected with the memories inscribed in human hearts. As park arrangements, cemeteries have been subject to fashions and trends in shaping the space and its architectural details. Symbolism plays a special role in them. Despite the diversity of burial grounds, the characteristic feature that memorial parks have in common is their evident capability to evoke melancholy and reflections on transience and loss that we experience on the passing away of our loved ones. The wealth of solutions applied to these burial grounds is closely linked with religion, culture and customs.

Excavations at site 1 in Witów, in the years 2004 – 2006, were a continuation of rescue excavations started in 2002. Excavations covered three areas most likely to be destroyed. At the foot of the promontory (trench 1) a sequence of cultural strata dating from the Neolithic (Funnel Beaker culture) through the Bronze Age (Lusatian culture) until the Roman period was unveiled. In trench 2 excavation works were continued on the remains of fortifications (embankment with elements of wooden structures) connected with the Lusatian culture. Within the trench no. 3 next settlement features of the Lusatian culture and early Medieval skeletal graves were discovered. The most interesting discoveries in the reporting period include the Lusatian burials in trapezium-like pits, unearthed in the trench no. 3. Due to its equipment (including ceramics of the “knob” style) and 14C dating, they should be tied with the origins of the Lusatian culture. Other interesting findings were also silver coins (denarii) from a Medieval cemetery. Research in seasons 2004 - 2006 proved most of the conclusions reached in previous seasons: the multicultural nature of the site, high intensity of the Lusatian culture settlement, and the presence of fortifications of this culture.

Excavations on a multicultural archaeological site at Michałowice have been conducted since 2008. So for, a total area of nearly 3200 m2 has been explored, bringing to light 107 archaeological features connected in the most part with the Przeworsk culture cemetery. In the 2012 season, 6 cremation burials and one groove-type feature attributed to this cultural unit were discovered. They were dug into a very large (ca. 30 m in diameter) natural closed depression.

Zachowana ceramika to: 1.
In the 1950s, cremation graves of the Lusatian Culture were discovered by chance at Kępka Szlachecka. The archaeological site is located on a hill surrounded to the south and west by Kępskie Lake and to the east by the River Lubieńka (Fig. 1, 3, 4). <br></br> Two small earthen vessels and few fragments of cremated human bones have survived to this day in the hands of private owners. It is known that at least one more, larger, vessel – a cinerary urn, now lost – complemented the assemblage. The preserved pottery consists of:1. A small amphora, decorated at the base of the neck with a horizontal groove (Fig. 2:a–c); 2. A small cup or mug (Fig. 2:d–f). The dimensions of the artefacts suggest that they served as accessory vessels. The dating of the pottery falls within a broad chronological range extending from Bronze Age IV to Hallstatt D. <br></br> The cemetery at Kępka Szlachecka has not been previously mentioned in the literature. A map of the Archaeological Polish Record shows five archaeological sites located to the north of Kępskie Lake (Fig. 3), but only one of them (no. 4) yielded three pottery sherds that may date to the time of the development of the Lusatian Culture.

Opis:
The cemetery at Linkuhnen by River Memel had a long history of usage by local Baltic tribes, starting in the early Roman Period and continuing to the Viking Age, with the highest number of burials in the 10th–11th centuries AD. When Linkuhnen was excavated in the 1930s by German archaeologists, it was considered a Viking cemetery, since some of the grave goods (especially weaponry) seemed to bear signs of Scandinavian influences. However, the Scandinavian influence was overstated and the interaction between local Balts and Vikings was never thoroughly explained by the excavators. New research on the old excavation archives indicates that Linkuhnen was not a Viking burial ground but that incoming influences from Scandinavia brought a shift to the internal strategies of representation by local Baltic elites. The burial rite changed from simple single cremation graves to lavishly equipped collective cremation graves for members of powerful families or military units. Another remarkable feature is the large number and ‘international’ character of weaponry in the burials, some of the highest quality (Ulfberht), while the jewellery represents local types only. Unlike other Scandinavian-influenced sites on the southern Baltic coast, the Scandinavian presence in the River Memel area only led to minor interactions between Balts and Vikings, though it had a significant influence on the local Baltic elites’ internal representation of status.

This article presents the results of geophysical surveys, which were carried out during the period between 2011 and 2016 at the Roman period cemetery in Nezabylice (Chomutov district, Ústí Region, NW Bohemia). Thanks to these non-destructive surveys, the unusually large scale and signs of the inner structure of the cemetery have been unveiled. On this basis, long-term systematic archaeological research has been carried out, so far uncovering a number of urn graves with military equipment, pit cremation graves, an elite inhumation grave, and several regular structures from Roman period. The results of the comprehensive research suggest that it is the largest and richest cemetery of the Roman period in northwest Bohemia. However, the site is gradually being devastated not only by cyclical agrarian activities but also by the impact of illegal plundering. Therefore, an important aspect of non-destructive surveys is the recording of the current state of the burial ground, the information value of which is gradually degrading.

Opis:
The modern pop-culturization of All Saints’ Day has encouraged the author to explore the profane sphere of this festival, using selected examples from Łódź cemeteries, as well as to write a short comparative description of a Latin American festival honouring the dead celebrated in early November. In the 20th century, visiting cemeteries in Poland on 1st November acquired some attributes of recreation and cultural tourism, visible in the atmosphere of a country fair and the ludic character of the cemetery surroundings, as well as the visitors’ commemorative, contemplative and cognitive motivations. Due to cultural changes, All Saints’ Day is increasingly perceived as a tourist event or even a cultural tourism product. The article presents a comparative description of the All Saints’ Day celebrations in Poland and the Day of the Dead in Latin America, and an analysis of visitors at selected Łódź cemeteries along with a description of the cemetery surroundings on 1st November 2019. The author has used unpublished research results from 2004, as well as discussing the secular and recreational aspects of All Saints’ Day.

Opis:
In my paper, I intended to present the interpretational possibilities of a selected theoretical model, taken from the comprehensive landscape current, focusing on three burial grounds with stone circles in Pomerania, which present considerable analytical potential. These sites have a long standing record of research, relatively well explored acreage, substantial literature and, fortunately enough, some data on the possible past natural environment, provided by palinological research.  I have conducted phenomenological analysis of the space according to the tenets of its creator, Ch. Tilley. It is a two-stage analysis, combining empirical description and theoretical interpretation. The sites I have selected, i.e. Odry, Węsiory and Grzybnica, approached as phenomena found in the Wielbark culture, were, in my opinion, perfectly suited to be subjected to such analysis. The latter confirmed the sacral and symbolic character, while thanks to the detailed description at the interpretation stage, I managed to outline their significance as an important site where the worlds of the living and the dead came into contact. A site chosen in the past by the human chiefly due to its location in the natural surroundings, which points to presence of an important relation between man and environment, a relation which made burial grounds become sites, experienced and created by man in the landscape. I am of the opinion that the work in which I utilised phenomenological analysis advanced by Ch. Tilley provides a positive answer to the question concerning the relation between man and his surroundings. The model proved valid in my research, allowing to obtain something in the shape of a picture of the past landscape. At the beginning, I wrote that “I would like to find man behind the silent stones of forgotten necropolises.” I have no doubt that I have managed to accomplish it. Even if the discovered, yet unspeaking man, who lived almost 2000 years ago, was presented by means of contemporary language of the researcher. No theoretical model can produce concrete, verifiable and conclusive answers. Thanks to my analysis I arrived at a probable depiction of past reality, which nevertheless will remain yet another interpretation of the same research material. In my opinion, this is precisely what constitutes the work of an archeologist, who ceaselessly poses questions and looks for the answer, trying to divine the silent past and to revive it in his/her words.

In both stories, the cemetery is a peculiar and significant landmark in urban space, where wandering takes the heroines back. It allows them to face psychological traumas, and, consequently, experience catharsis or inner change. A place per se dedicated to death becomes for both elderly women a place of hope and a symbol of new beginning.

In 2015, during the reconstruction of Nadrzeczna Street and Bohaterów Getta Square, in the area of the intersection with Jaskrowska Street, it was made the discovery of human bone remains. As a result of the rescue investigations undertaken, an area of approximately 550 square meters was tested. They were discovered among others relics of foundations, made of broken limestone and remains of the cemetery. The historical research showed that these foundations were relics of the St. Barbara church, around which there was a churchyard cemetery called „the cemetery outside the city” in the sources. At the remains they were found rosary beads, medallions, crosses, single glass beads, iron buttons, bronze and bone coins, hooks, buckles, pieces of cloth and textile and haberdashery ornaments. Particularly noteworthy is the collection of religious items. The collection of devotional items includes 14 exhibits. It is a diverse collection in terms of morphological and stylistic, and above all iconographic. Metal medallions and crosses were made from non-ferrous metals in casting or minting techniques. The minted medallions were made from thin badges. Glass medallions were made from two glass panes, bound in a metal frame, between which there was an image reflected on the paper. The remains of rosaries are beads, differing in terms of size, colors and shapes. Only in 9 graves it was managed to set the position of devotional items on the remains of the deceased. Most often, devotions were found at the height of clasped hands folded in the lap. Other places where devotional items are found are: around the head, around the clavicle, around the thigh – above the knees and at the feet level. The subject of images on medallions and crosses is diverse. The sets of images on the obverses and other sides are also interesting. On one picture of a glass medallion it was identified the figure of Saint Josef. The figure of St. Benedict was on two medallions. The figure of St. John the Baptist was presented on one of the most carefully made cast medallions. On its other side it was recognized St. Nicholas. On the next medal, the figure of St. Francis of Paola was identified. St. Francis of Assisi appears on a very poorly legible paper picture. On the medal lion we can see St. Wojciech. On its other side there is a figure of the Guardian Angel holding the child by a hand. Burning Hearts are presented on a cast medal, on the other side of the medal with St. Wojciech. The most popular were the medallions with images of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The Polish images of the Mother of God should be taken in account, first of all, Madonna of Jasna Góra from Częstochowa. On the medallions and crosses except the characters, there are legends – inscriptions, only in Latin, made them by majuskuła with sheriffs. Most often, the medallions were „signed” by the name of the saint. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, they were gladly supplied with medallions with the patrons of good death. In determining the chronology of devotional items from the church cemetery at the church of Saint Barbara, a wide chronological framework was adopted, corresponding to the period of use of the cemetery and the church, from the 17th century to probably the beginning of the 19th century. Częstochowa was the center of worship of Our Lady of Jasna Góra. It can be assumed that most of the medallions with images of the Virgin of Częstochowa, and perhaps even all of them, were probably created in Częstochowa.

The essay on Brussels Dieweg Cemetery in Uccle presents the concept of reading the cemetery culture text as a story of the dialogue between the living and the dead, which was taking place at the time of establishing and functioning of the necropolis, i.e., starting in the second half of the 19th century until 1939. Dieweg Cemetery is an example of Catholic-Jewish funeral art, whose historic testimonies in a variety of styles fall into decay and surrender to nature. The ‘reportage’ part gives an account of the dispute between Catholics and Belgian liberals in the 1860s over the right to administer the licences on the new necropolis. The main part of the essay touches upon the subject of cemetery aesthetics symbolising attitudes towards death in the second half of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century. They are expressed in multilingual inscriptions and numerous grave medallions in two religions on the ground, where Catholics and Jews form a community. A plan of the necropolis and a series of author’s photographs are attached to the paper as they are crucial illustrations of the words.

The explanatory statement to the bill not include any information about the costs, even estimated ones, of maintaining and renovating burial places covered by the prohibition on reburial, as well as about the criteria for distribution of funds intended for financing the purposes determined in the Act. Moreover sources of funds of the state budget from which the undertakings provided in bill would be financed have not been specifies. The author also expresses doubts about the compatibility of the procedure for issuing the decision on the prohibition of using the grave for reburial with Article 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, due to its rudimentary character, which results in the lack of legal certainty.

Opis:
Stanowi on ciekawe połączenie stylistyki bałtyjskiej (zdobienie emalią) z „germańską” formą zapięcia.
The cemetery at Bargłów Dworny is located approx. 10 km to the SW of Augustów (Fig. 1). It was reported to the State Archaeological Museum in 1937. Rescue excavations were undertaken at the site first in 1939, under the supervision of Józef Marcinak, and then in 1969 and 1972, led by Marian Kaczyński. In total, an area of more than 900 m2 was excavated, and 37 Bogaczewo Culture graves were uncovered (Fig. 2). Unfortunately, most of them were severely damaged as a result of intense agricultural works. <br></br> Among the artefacts recovered during the excavations, there are several of local – limited to the Bogaczewo Culture – character as well as those typical of the entire West Balt cultural circle that deserve attention. The former group includes a triple-crested brooch of the Mazurian variant found in grave 7 (Fig. 6/7:1). It represents the second group of this fibula type, distinguished in this paper, which is characterised by a small protrusion in the upper part of the sleeve. Such specimens are found in the Bogaczewo Culture in phase C1a. The artefacts typical of the Bogaczewo Culture also include a figure-of-eight-shaped pendant of type A from grave 18B (Fig. 9:1) and two iron axes – one from grave 4B, the other a stray find (Fig. 5/4B:1, 16/03:5). These artefacts are dated to phases B2b and B2/C1. The other artefact group, of broader, West Balt character, is represented, among others, by an enamelled penannular brooch from grave 4A (Fig. 4/4A:1), two cuff bracelets of type A from the same feature (Fig. 4/4A:2.3) and a stray find of a small socketed axe (Fig. 15/02:1). The bracelets from grave 4A and the axe are dated to phase B2/C1–C1a and phase B2–B2/C1 respectively. <br></br> The Bargłów Dworny cemetery also yielded isolated imports from the areas of neighbouring cultures. A G.3 type belt buckle from grave 18A (Fig. 9/18:1) is probably of Przeworsk origin; it is dated to phase B2b and B2/C1. A stray find of a green bead of type TM183 (Fig. 15/02:2) is associated with the influence of the Wielbark Culture, in which such artefacts are often encountered in graves from phase C1. The bronze necklace separators from grave 1 (Fig. 3/1:3b) come from the Dollkeim-Kovrovo Culture, in the area of which they are found in assemblages from phases B2 and B2/C1. <br></br> A unique find is a fragmentarily preserved neck-ring discovered in the intermingled top layer of graves 28A and 28B (Fig. 12:1). It represents an interesting combination of Balt style (enamel decoration) with a “Germanic” form of the fastener. <br></br> The scarce pottery found at the site is typical of the Bogaczewo Culture. Of note is the presence in the graves of small sherds of bowls and mugs representing the so-called tableware. It seems to be a local feature of the funeral rite, to date observed only at cemeteries of the so-called Rajgród Group. <br></br> A comprehensive analysis of the artefacts allowed establishing that the excavated part of the cemetery was in use from phase B2 to phase C2 of the Roman Period.

Mnimouria – a modest country cemetery plays an important role in the novels by Alexandros Papadiamantis. While the pretentious offi cial First Cemetery of Athens displays the wealth of the nouveaux riches who strive to imitate in an artifi cial and exaggerated manner various forms of tombs of the ancient Greek Kerameikos in an attempt to prove their ancient ancestry, Papadiamantis in his picture of Skiathos little koimeterion manages to place it both in the order of nature and in the world of culture. He shows us, sometimes not without a mild irony, how the old pagan beliefs and superstitions such as: evil-eye, curses, ghosts and apparitions still coexist harmoniously with sincere Christian faith of his simple compatriots in an island where one could hear the pipe of a young shepherd, who could have been perhaps a satyr, or glimpse a strange shape, possibly of a Nymph or a Naiad (neraida).

Opis:
The Evangelical-Augsburg Cemetery in Pabianice was founded in the beginnings of the Lutheran parish. Lutherans were founders of the textile industry and they contributed to development of the city. Their cemetery is a place of eternal rest for the members of the wealthiest families of Pabianice. Their social status and fortune is visibly reflected on their graves. The gravemarkers have high artistic values and were made by best sculptural companies and acclaimed artists – such as Johannes Schilling, the professor of Fine Arts Academy from Dresden, who created the statue of Christ on the grave of Krusche family. Most of the realizations were made by local companies and most of the gravemarkers with signatures were made by company of Antoni Urbanowski and Fiebigier & Frantz from Łódź. This is a reason why we can find some identical gravemarkers on the cemetery on Ogrodowa street in the near city. In the Lutheran cemetery there are realisations of most popular themes and styles in sepulchral art of XIX and XX century and many types of gravemarkers such as stellas, cippuses, aediculas, broken columns, obelisks or the most popular – simple or stylized crosses. Even though they were often designed for serial production, they are still beautiful piece of craft and important sign of the past.

The excavations on a multicultural site 1 at Michałowice, Czarnocin commune, have been conducted since 2008. In 2011, they concentrated in the north-western part of the site, where a geomagnetic survey had been conducted by the team led by P. Wroniecki in the preceding season. The verification of this survey’s results was the main goal of the excavations in 2011. The excavated area amounted to 800 m2, which yielded 31 archaeological features mainly connected with the Przeworsk culture cemetery. Among the discovered features were both cremation burials and groove-type features known from previous investigations. A few Lusatian culture burials were discovered, too. The results of the geomagnetic survey were in most part confirmed during the excavations.

The article deals with a little-known subject of the Italian Military Cemetery in Wrocław with the graves of soldiers from World War I. It is the only preserved Italian necropolis from that period in Poland. It was established in the 1920s in the District of Grabiszyn at the Italian Government’s suggestion. The cemetery includes the collective graves of Italian POWs who had died in German captivity in 1917–1919. The opening ceremony of this necropolis, together with its consecration, took place on November 2nd, 1928. The soldiers’ graves are situated in four sections located around a central point. They are also commemorated in the form of an obelisk. Between 1943 and 1945 another 48 victims of World War II were buried, among them some Italian POWs and a number of civilians. In 1957 their remains were exhumed and transferred to the Italian Military Cemetery in Warsaw. The only graves which remain in Wrocław were the graves of the World War I soldiers, among others of those who fought at Caporetto, the battle which started their prisoners’ way, finally ending in Polish Wroclaw.

In every age we can find a different attitude of man towards the end of life, instanced in varied stances and imaginations regarding death. In postmodernism, which makes a broader context for this work, it is impossible to present one unified image of death, because the attitude of contemporary men towards death and the visual forms of it are greatly varied. The subject of my analysis is a presentation of death shown in three occurrences the crisis, the pornography and the renaissance of death which combine to form the postmodern thanatic triad.

Opis:
The main source for this article are 283 Hebrew epitaphs from the old Jewish cemetery in Lublin from the years 1541-1830 (since the oldest known inscription till the closing of the cemetery), collected by the author from preserved tombstones. Moreover, the author also studied those epigraphs that did not survive till our times but could be reconstructed from photographs and copies made by different scholars since mid-nineteenth century. In the introductory part the author briefly discusses eschatological concepts, developed in Judaism over the millennia, and presents relevant terminology used in epitaphs. In the main body of the article he conducts an analysis of eschatological contents from the collected epitaphs distinguishing such categories as: 1) demise; 2) posthumous fate of the body; 3) fate of the soul after the death of the body; 4) intercession; 5) end times; 6) commemorating the dead; 7) consolation; 8) understanding of eternity; 9) expressions for heaven, God and His messengers. While analysing particular concepts within the categories mentioned above, the author focuses on their origin, frequency of usage within the discussed group of epitaphs, and literal or contextual meaning, and illustrates the selected examples with expressions from epitaphs. In the conclusion he states that authors of the epitaphs drew motifs that contain eschatological contents from various sources, including the Hebrew Scriptures, rabbinical literature (especially the Talmud), prayers, and, finally, cabbalistic works. References to the latter dominate in the epitaphs, particularly in the versions popular among common people.

This thesis is an anthropological analysis of an early-medieval population, inhabiting the area of Stręgoborzyce village, Igołomia-Wawrzeńczye commune, Małopolska province. The subjects of research were skeletons of 67 individuals, which were dug during archaeological excavations on site number 38 in Stręgoborzyce, in years 2010 and 2011. Among the 67 skeletons of different state of preservation there were isolated 22 females, 17 males, 4 children and 24 individuals of unknown sex. Basic research included determining the age and sex of the individuals and the state of preservation of skeletal remains. Author did some cranial and postextracranial skeleton measurements, which allowed doing an anthropological characterization of the population and estimating a hypothetical intravital body length of each individual. The evaluation of health conditions was taken on the basis of pathological changes in bone material, which are an expression of previous diseases and degenerative processes. The thesis also focused on the examination of the presence of non-metric characteristics of the human skeleton. At the end author tried to do a comparison analysis of the population to other groups, similar in time and geography.

Opis:
The sepulchral space – or cemetery space – is an extremely important element of every region. It is an expression of cultural heritage, history, and social relations. The Łódź Voivodeship, as an area where many cultures, nationalities and religions coexist, is enormously rich and interesting in this regard. When analysing this phenomenon, it is impossible to forget military burial sites: those insurrectional and those from both World Wars. This article presents information about cemeteries from the period of the First World War – their stylistic characteristics, typology of the forms of cemetery complexes and objects, and the results of stocktaking research. The burial sites from World War One are a special and significant testimony to the history of the surroundings of Łódź and Poland. They are a material reflection of the tragic and bloody events that resulted in the country regaining independence after 123 years.
