    Rodzina i wychowanie w rodzinie mają kluczowe znaczenie zarówno dla funkcjonowania danej społeczności, jak i całych narodów. Powielanie negatywnych wzorów zachowań utrwala nabyte pokoleniowo postrzeganie rzeczywistości, które prowadzić może do klęski jednostkę i społeczność. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie myśli François Mauriaca, francuskiego pisarza katolickiego okresu powojennego, który w swoich powieściach przedstawiał zagrożenia płynące dla jednostki z perspektywy odrzucenia przyjaźni do świata i ludzi. Mauriac śledzi losy rodzin francuskich na kartach wielu swoich powieści, ukazując dramat ich uwikłań wynikający z koncentracji na iluzji własnych wyobrażeń na temat szczęścia. Przedmiotem analizy w niniejszym artykule są dwie wybrane powieści: "Le Noeud de vipères", znana czytelnikowi polskiemu pod tytułem "Kłębowisko żmij", oraz "Le Sagouin", nieprzetłumaczona do tej pory na język polski. W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawione zostały związki literatury z życiem społecznym, ujmowanym z perspektywy socjoliterackiej, w drugiej sposób, w jaki Mauriac rozumiał swoje zobowiązania literackie i zaangażowanie na rzecz kultury katolickiej, których celem było ukazanie czytelnikowi jałowości bytu każdego, kto lekceważy pojęcie miłości w relacjach międzyludzkich. Kolejne części prezentują problematykę edukacji rodzinnej i instytucjonalnej podejmowaną przez Mauriaca oraz przybliżają jego rozumienie odpowiedzialności ciążącej na rodzicach i nauczycielach za los młodego pokolenia, decydującego w dalszej perspektywie o losach cywilizacji społecznej w szerokim rozumieniu tego słowa. Odpowiedzialność za innego, w duchu empatii, okazuje się bowiem kluczowym hasłem działania każdego.
    Upbringing within the family and the family itself are of crucial importance for the proper functioning of communities and entire nations. The reproduction of negative behavioural patterns perpetuates a perception of reality acquired over generations. This can lead to the destruction of the entity and communities. The aim of this article is to present the thoughts of F. Mauriac, a French Catholic writer of the post-war period. In his novels, Mauriac revealed threats to the individual that come from rejecting friendship towards the world and people. In the pages of many of his novels, Mauriac traces the fates of French families. He shows their dramatic entanglements, stemming from concentration on illusions of their own beliefs about happiness. The subject of analysis in this article are two selected novels, "Le Noeud de vipères", known to the Polish reader as "The Viper’s Den", and "Le Sagouin", which is not yet translated into Polish. The first part of the article presents the relationships between literature and social life as seen from the socio-literary perspective, while the second presents Mauriac’s understanding of his literary commitments and his commitment to Catholic culture. It aims to show readers the barrenness of existence of anyone who disregards the concept of love in interpersonal relations. The following parts present the problems of institutional and family education raised by Mauriac and highlight his understanding of the responsibility incumbent upon parents and teachers for the fate of the younger generation. This generation, in the long run, determines the fate of social civilisation in the broad sense of the term. Responsibility for the other, in the spirit of empathy, turns out to be the key slogan for everyone’s actions.

    Opis:
    A striking feature of Muriel Spark’s fiction is its insistence on the reality of the supernatural, which occasionally breaks into the naturalistic level, defying and challenging habitual modes of perception. The fact of Spark being a religious convert is well known, but her faith is manifested in ways different from what is normally assumed to be religious writing. Spark’s novels are never overtly didactic or moralistic; the impact of her faith is manifest in the notion of reality as conveyed by her fiction. Spark’s vision of reality, underlain by her Catholicism, is based on her conviction that empirical reality coexists with the supernatural world; therefore, interactions with the supernatural, however strange they may seem, are presented in her fiction as compellingly plausible. It is argued in the article that Spark’s ontology of fiction is rooted in a tradition going back to Chesterton, who insisted on the paradoxical conjunction of nonsense and faith, both capable of invoking a sense of spiritual wonder at the world we normally take for granted. Memento Mori, Reality and Dreams as well as selected short stories are referenced to illustrate the peculiar combination of the empirical and the supernatural in Spark’s fiction. The article asserts the paradox, central to Spark’s vision of reality, that the supernatural should be accepted as a natural part of profane experience.

    Autorka przedstawiła opracowanie dotyczące zagadnień literackich na łamach „Tygodnika Powszechnego” w latach 1945–1953. Krakowski tygodnik społeczno-kulturalny założony jeszcze w czasie trwania działań wojennych, przeznaczony dla inteligencji, skupił wokół siebie jedno z najważniejszych środowisk katolickich. Na jego łamach obszernie omawiano m.in. kwestie oblicza powojennej literatury, sprawy katolickiej powieści, recenzowano dzieła prozaików polskich i zagranicznych.
    This article examines the approaches to fi ction in the pages of the Catholic weekly Tygodnik Powszechny between 1945 and 1953. Aimed at the Polish intelligentsia, it was concerned with broad social and cultural issues. Founded in Cracow in the last days of World War II, it became one of the most important centres of Catholic life in Poland ruled by the communists. Apart from reviewing the Polish and foreign fi ction, the writers of Tygodnik Powszechny debated at length the character of post-war literature and the problem of the Catholic novel.

    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie o związki między popkulturą a wychowaniem religijnym w katolickim internacie w świetle współczesnej prozy niemieckiej nacechowanej autobiograficznie. W centrum rozważań znajdują się uchwycone w niej zmiany w podejściu do edukacji odwołującej się do wartości chrześcijańskich i realizowanej obok lub też za pomocą przekazu popkulturowego. Główne pytanie dotyczy kwestii, w jaki sposób przebiega proces konstruowania tożsamości na styku religia–popkultura, jakie czynniki na niego oddziałują, a jakie ograniczają bądź też blokują.
    The objective of this article is to look at the relation between pop culture and religious instruction in Catholic boarding schools as reflected in contemporary German autobiographical prose. The focus is set on the delineation of the impact on an education approach based on Christian values yet influenced by – and sometimes taking advantage of – pop culture. The main question is about the way of identity construction on the edge between religion and pop culture, i.e. about the influencing, limiting or even blockading factors.

    Le Disciple (The Disciple) is Paul Bourget’s main work. The book, which was published in 1889, was preceded by a psychological novel, Mensonges (A Living Lie), published in 1887, and followed by a thesis novel, L’Étape, published in 1902, in which this member of the French Academy prefigured and reconfigured the character of the teacher and that of the student. His model teaching figures are the edifying character of the priest-teacher or of the Christian teacher, who support the values of traditional Catholic education, which differ from those of secular teachers. The fictional outline of the characters as well as the author’s diaries shed light on the evolution of the author’s theories about teaching, which were linked to the Catholic faith,  showing how his fictional and personal writings developed in parallel.
    Le Disciple est l’œuvre centrale de Paul Bourget. Cet ouvrage de 1889 est précédé par un roman psychologique Mensonges (1887) et suivi par un roman à thèse L’Étape (1902), dans lesquels l’académicien préfigure et reconfigure les personnages du professeur et de l’élève. Son modèle de maître se dessine dans des figures de prêtre-enseignant ou de professeur chrétien dans la défense des valeurs de l’éducation catholique traditionnaliste contrastant avec celles de professeurs laïcs. Les schémas fictionnels des personnages comme les écrits diaristes de l’auteur permettent d’éclairer l’élaboration des thèses de l’auteur sur l’enseignement lié à la foi catholique, dans un cheminement parallèle d’écriture romanesque et intime.

    Der vorliegende Artikel wurde dem Einfluss der Bekehrung auf den Identitätswandel gewidmet. Den Forschungsgegenstand bildet die Identitätsbildung und -Entwicklung der Hauptheldin Veronika im Roman Das Schweißtuch der Veronika von Gertrud von le Fort. Zuerst wurden anhand von Wörterbüchern, Lexika und Fachliteratur die Schlüsselworte – Bekehrung (Konversion) und Identität – definiert. Die hier angenommene Definition der Konversion bedeutet nicht nur die Bekehrung sensu stricto, sondern auch die Vertiefung des geistigen und religiösen Lebens. Die Definitionen der Identität weisen auf verschiedene Bereiche des Begriffs hin. Es gibt u.a. eine individuelle, d.h. persönliche Identität, eine soziale und religiöse Identität. Die darauf folgende Analyse konzentriert sich vor allem auf die Identitätsbildung der Titelheldin, die durch ihre Familienangehörigen, Bekannten sowie das ganze Milieu beeinflusst und infolge der Bekehrung schrittweise verändert wird. Veronikas Bekehrung führt dazu, dass sie nicht nur sich selbst und die sie umgebende Welt anders zu definieren beginnt, sondern das, was für sie den höchsten Wert darstellt, also den katholischen Glauben, mit ihren Taten bestätigt. Die im vorliegenden Beitrag durchgeführte Untersuchung wurde durch viele Zitate aus dem Roman sowie der Sekundärliteratur belegt.
