The fantastic is one of the elements in the narrative poetics of Joan Barceló, a seminal Catalan writer of the 70s. The purpose of this article is to analyse the fantastic from a theoretical perspective, including its specific uses in Barceló’s stories and novels, how it works and why. Thus, the paper draws on the concept of the neofantastic to reveal a literary space of aesthetic and ideological transgression that moves among three thresholds: the magical or fairy, the unusual and the absurd or nonsense.

This article analyzes the construction of El complot dels anells (The plot of the rings), a Catalan political fiction artifact that was created as both a film and a novel in 1988. To this end, not only the fundamental sociopolitical and cultural contexts have been taken into account, but also the point of view M. O’Brian, an Irish American journalist who has to cover the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona. He gets involved in a high-voltage political intrigue, a confabulation that leads a terrorist group to hijack the Olympic stadium and the Catalan president in an attempt to declare independence from Spain. Therefore, the main goal is to discuss the mechanisms that articulate figures of Otherness throughout the story. In conclusion, allusions to contemporary reality and the distance created by the Other voices do not, at first sight, meet the challenge of reflecting on armed struggle as a means of achieving political goals, causing the effect of escapism alone. Nevertheless, a closer approach through the figure of Otherness and a reflection on terrorism’s real sense in the film and the novel entail a vision of O’Brian’s character as both the real Double and the representational Sameness in El complot dels anells.

In 1881 Maria de Bell-lloch, a pseudonym used by Maria del Pilar Maspons i Labrós (1841-1907), published Llegendas catalanas. A writer of the Renaixença movement, she is one of the first women who stand out in the study of Catalan folk literature in this foundational period of interest for folklore in Catalonia. Some of the stories in the collection have been considered fantastic stories and have been included in various anthologies. The aim of this paper is to analyse this corpus in a philological way to see which stories can be integrated into fantastic literature, considering the theoretical difficulties that the legend poses as a genre.

The Catalan language is a language of romance group, closely related to Occitan. It is the only official language in Andorra, but it shares the status of official with Spanish in the Spanish Autonomous Communities of Catalonia, Valencia and Balearic Islands. It is not recognized as official in the Autonomous Community of Aragon in Spain, the Northern Catalonia in France and the Italian city of Alguer. However it is partially used in the latter as it remains the traditional language of the territory of the Catalan Countries. Depending on the formal status and history the situation of the language differs in many aspects including education, the possibility to use in the public situations and the knowledge. The article deals briefly with these questions on the basis of official statistics as well as the research of the author of the article.

A special relational structure, called genealogical tree, is introduced; its social interpretation and geometrical realizations are discussed. The numbers $C_{n,k}$ of all abstract genealogical trees with exactly n+1 nodes and k leaves is found by means of enumeration of code words. For each n, the $C_{n,k}$ form a partition of the n-th Catalan numer Cₙ, that means $C_{n,1}+C_{n,2}+ ...+C_{n,n} = Cₙ$.

The aim of this paper is to present a first dialectometric approach to the geolinguistic distribution of the Romance varieties using a new corpus based on the Atlas Linguistique Roman (ALiR) which is currently being developed at the Centro Ramón Piñeiro para a Investigación en Humanidades. However, the dialectometrization of ALiR will allow us not only to analyze the linguistic distance among the varieties of Romania Antiqua, but also to shed light from a quantitative perspective on several issues that have historically raised controversy. Specifically, this paper deals with the Romance subgrouping of the Catalan language, an issue that has been recently reopened by Radatz (2012).

W artykule omawiano kwestię kształtowania się katalońskiej tożsamości narodowej od IX do XV w., koncentrując się na fundacyjnej legendzie Otgera Cataló – fikcyjnej postaci „Ojca ojczyzny” (Pare de la Pàtria). Początkowo katalońska wspólnota określała się przez samoporzpisanie do wspólnoty politycznej Franków (IX – XII w.), a endoetnonim Katalończycy podkreślający jej odrębności względem sąsiadów pojawił się dopiero w XII w. Fundacyjna legenda Otgera pojawiła się w XV stuleciu kontekście politycznym, jako odpowiedź katalońskiej szlachty na próby odsunięcia jej od władzy przez pierwszego władcę z kastylijskiej dynastii Trastamara zasiadającego na aragońskim tronie. Pierwsza wersja legendy, spisana w 1418 r., ma charakter etymologiczny i umieszczając mityczne początki Katalonii w 732 r., legitymizuje przez dawność nacji jej prawo do samostanowienia. Kolejna wersja, powstała w 1431r., ma charakter genealogiczny i podkreśla, podobnie jak późniejsze warianty, znaczenie katalońskiej arystokracji. W XIX w., w okresie katalońskiego odrodzenia narodowego, legenda Otgera Cataló była wykorzystywana do rozbudzenia świadomości narodowej. Podobnie dziś, stanowiąc jeden z wielu elementów narodowej mitologii, służy umacnianiu katalońskiej odrębności, a w konsekwencji państwotwórczych aspiracji.
The article describes formation of the Catalan national identity in the period from the 9th to the 15th century, focusing on the foundational legend of Otger Cataló – a fictional character called “Father of the Nation” (Pare de la Pàtria). Initially, the Catalan community defined itself by self-assignation to the Franks’ political community (9th – 12th century), And the endonym Catalans, emphasizing its distinctiveness in relation to the neighbours, came only in the 12th century. The foundational legend of Otger appeared in the 15th century in a political context, as a response of the Catalan nobility to an attempt to offset it from power, which was made by the first ruler of the Castilian dynasty of Trastámara on the throne of Aragon. The first version of the legend, written in 1418, has etymological character and places the mythical origins of Catalonia in the year 732. Another version, founded in 1431, is a genealogical one and highlights, likewise its later variants, the importance of the Catalan aristocracy. In the 19th century, during the Catalan national revival, the Otger Cataló legend was used for the awakening of national consciousness. Similarly today, being one of the many elements of national mythology, strengthens the idea of the Catalan autonomy and, in consequence, of the state-building aspirations.

The following work is a particular reading of Quim Monzó’s nouvelle entitled Davant del rei de Suècia. Firstly, we will focus on the main character, Amargós, a poet and an ironic, inauthentic being. Secondly, the protagonist’s condition will be interpreted from the perspective of the two mutually exclusive discourses that form his identity: the discourse of a poet and the discourse of a national hero. The aim of the present article is to suggest some of the possible interpretations, all of them related by association, given that the nouvelle itself, as the author said, shall not be read as a roman à clef. It ought to be perceived rather as an open matrix which leaves space to many different readings. The academic attitude towards literature and language, as well as the rigid divisions between the fine art and the popular culture, are some of the topics that Monzó turns into grotesque.

In these proverbs, the house is represented from two different but complementary points of view: the space of intimacy, in which every individual can feel safe, and the place where the socialization of people begins, so that it constitutes a microcosm governed by social rules which condition the relationships between its inhabitants.

The poetry of Joan Brossa (1919-1998), because of its complexity and size, testifies the adventures that has lived the Western literature in the second half of the twentieth century: from the depletion of traditional avant-gardes, going through the movements of neo- or transavantgarde, up to the manifestos of the “literature of exhaustion” or postmodern. The present study aims to discuss the collection of seven volumes of poetry of Joan Brossa, written between 1969 and 1975, and published between 1983 and 1989 under the general title "Els entra-i-surts del poeta", which we consider as one of the most consistent editorial and lyrical author’s projects. We put emphasis on the issue of continuation / break up between the modernist concepts of language and the postmodern plurality, treatment of reality as text or writing, free play of imagination: all this not as a picture of disintegrated world but as positive reflection of a polymorphic reality.

Spain suffered under the climate of state terrorism from the dictatorship of 1939 until the 1970s, and during the period including the last years of General Franco’s life to the first years of the transition to democracy. Within this historical context and during the same period, Catalonia suffered more under state terrorism than under the violence of other armed groups. The result of this was that the literature on this subject is either minimal or was written much later. Moreover, the focus on women terrorists was also scarce. Even at present, in situations of armed conflict, women are still seen as victims or as booty – not as active participants in violence. It is the distance in time and context that marks the narrative discourse of La terrorista desarmada (The Unarmed Terrorist) (2002) by Anna Vilaseca. The story is set at the end of the Franco regime and illustrates the pervading binaries defining women as submissive and peace-loving.

In accordance with the Constitution of 1978, Spanish autonomous communities are “equipped with” all features of a composite state (regional parliament, government, autonomous administration) and function on the basis of autonomous statutes approved by the national parliament. The Catalan Statute of 19th July 2006 establishes the division of responsibilities, including exclusive regional competences (agriculture, culture, sport and tourism, spatial planning); shared competences (education, health care, environmental protection, industry, banks and insurances); and executive competences (waterworks, prisons system, intellectual property). The analysis of chosen competences in Catalonia will present the characteristics of autonomy and decentralization in Spain with reference to the attempts to create a regional model of programming and realization of public policies.

This paper focuses on the analysis of the lexical and semantic influences of L2 (Catalan) on the L1 (Amazigh) in a basic semantic field: parts of the body. Based on the observation that our participants show differences in their L1 usage related to the amount of time they have been in contact with Catalan, our goal is to analyze and describe these differences to see if they are the consequence of a transfer from the L2 conceptual system. This paper is a qualitative study with a sample size of 14 participants whose L1 is Amazigh and who live in Catalonia. The results show that there are cases of semantic and conceptual influence, although to a lesser degree than in other studies that do not analyze data from basic semantic fields. We will also show that there are extralinguistic factors that influence these transfers (the status of the languages involved and certain characteristics of the speakers).

This study presents a practical view of dynamic programming, specifically in the context of the application of finding the optimal solutions for the polygon triangulation problem. The problem of the optimal triangulation of polygon is considered to be as a recursive substructure. The basic idea of the constructed method lies in finding to an adequate way for a rapid generation of optimal triangulations and storing - them in as small as possible memory space. The upgraded method is based on a memoization technique, and its emphasis is in storing the results of the calculated values and returning the cached result when the same values again occur. The significance of the method is in the generation of the optimal triangulation for a large number of n. All the calculated weights in the triangulation process are stored and performed in the same table. Results processing and implementation of the method was carried out in the Java environment and the experimental results were compared with the square matrix and Hurtado-Noy method.

This article is a monograph focusing on an analysis of the play Judit by Josep M. de Sagarra. The author’s only tragedy, and unique among his works, was first performed in Barcelona in 1929. It is a little-studied work, doubtless due to its lack of success with theatre audiences, although Sagarra himself had a high opinion of it. To carry out our analysis, we will make use of the analytic tools introduced by Gérard Genette in his Palimpsestes (1982) around hypertextuality and, more specifically, we will consider this work as a transformation of the biblical story, paying special attention to the new material Segarra brought to this text.

This paper aims to investigate the Classical proverbs listed as equivalents to the Catalan proverb L’amic, prova’l primer ans que l’hages menester by Sebastià Farnés in his volume entitled Paremiologia catalana comparada. In this paper, I will establish these Classical proverbs’ sources, consider their authenticity and correspondence with this Catalan proverb, and increase the number of Classical sources, since this Catalan proverb bears witness to its Classical tradition and is related to philosophical and literary passages that can be considered as previous manifestations of this tradition. These Greek and Latin passages are compiled and compared so as to determine the different ways in which the idea included in this Catalan proverb was expressed over time. The conclusion is that the consideration about friendship presented by this proverb is embedded into a long textual/ideological tradition which ultimately refers to the sage Solon, the poet Theognis and the philosopher Theofrast, although there may be connections with the Judeo-Christian tradition as well.

In this paper, a procedure for the application of one computational geometry algorithm in the process of generating hidden cryptographic keys from one segment of a 3D image is presented. The presented procedure consists of three phases. In the first phase, the separation of one segment from the 3D image and determination of the triangulation of the separated polygon are done. In the second phase, a conversion from the obtained triangulation of the polygon in the record that represents the Catalan key is done. In the third phase, the Catalan-key is applied in the encryption of the text based on the balanced parentheses combinatorial problem.

Martí Domínguez (1966) is a biologist, writer and journalist, the author of novels, essays, and press articles. In his novels Les confidències del comte de Buffon (1997) and El secret de Goethe (1999), he presents two great personalities of 18th century Europe and a scientific and cultural context of their lives and works. These novels contain information about debates, ideas, and theories related to the development of science (especially the natural sciences) in the Age of Enlightenment. In the article we study the narrative strategies used by the author in order to present issues regarding the history of natural sciences in modern Europe.

Jaume Roig’s Espill constitutes one of the masterpieces in the history of Catalan literature. On the pages of the present article the attention will be put on one of its main thematic subjects, that is marriage, treated on the basis of a large perspective, whose goal will be to integrate the results of interdisciplinary analyses from the fields of anthropology, theology or cultural studies, in order to project an all-embracing view that will allow to configure the Spill’s signifiers polyhedron, which relies on its precious and singular textual ambiguity. In this frame and around the marriage’s core, the textual presence of sexuality marks, family relations and amor hereos will be analyzed in detail, for finally presenting a reading proposal of the main character’s matrimonial episodes from an exegetical sight.

The arrest, trial, and execution of the anarchist activist Salvador Puig Antich in 1974 were some of the most crucial events in the final years of general Franco’s regime. These facts gave rise to an enormous political mobilisation both in Catalonia and in Europe, and turned Puig Antich into a symbol of anti-Franco resistance within Catalan democratic culture. At the same time, due to both this symbolic status and the traumatic nature of the events, as well as the manifest injustice with which they concluded, the Puig Antich case has been the object of regular commemoration in the media and in diverse forms of cultural production. This makes it particularly interesting for an analysis of the uses of the past in Catalan culture. This article proposes a comparative analysis of three books on Puig Antich’s case that have been published in Catalan over a period of thirty years: La torna de la torna: Salvador Puig Antich i el M.I.L., by the Carlota Tolosa collective (1985), Compte enrere: La història de Salvador Puig Antich (2001), by Francesc Escribano, and Salvador Puig Antich, cas obert: La revisió definitiva del procés (2013), by Jordi Panyella. These three journalistic texts, published at different but highly significant historical moments, allow us to reflect on the rewriting of the Puig Antich case and its meaning for Catalan society, especially with regards to the political and national sentimentality they construct around the relationship of Catalan society with political violence and the trauma of Francoist repression.

Ponadto prezentuje w jaki sposób sport – w tym przypadku piłka nożna – może stać się nośnikiem wartości narodowych, a także jak zakorzenienie w etniczności podnosi wartość samego klubu. Eksploracja zagadnienia Blaugrany, nakreśliła jednocześnie jej rolę w konflikcie na linii Katalonia – Madryt, czyniąc tym samym z niej niemal substytut partii politycznej.
The article takes the issue of the construction of ethno brand of Catalonia by FC Barcelona. It exam-ines the significance of the Catalans club’s identity and mutual relationships. In addition, it shows how sport - in this case football - can become a carrier of national values, as well as being rooted in ethnicity increases the value of the club itself. Exploring the issue of Blaugrana also outlins its role in the conflict on the line Catalonia - Madrid, thus making it virtually a substitute for a political party.

The main aim of this article is to analyse the complexity of the subject of memory in the work of Jesus Moncada, as an author from Aragon writing in Catalan and introducing the Spanish Civil War issue in fantastic fiction, namely in Històries de la mà esquerra [Stories of the Left Hand] (1981). Furthermore, the short story that closes the book, “D’uns vells papers de música” [Old Sheet Music], is discussed to illustrate that matter in the context of the conflict between the real and the fantastic, on the one hand, and between history and memory, on the other hand. Thus, in the mentioned narrative fiction collective memory stands as a specter whose condition is noticed by its anachronistic return under grotesque forms, resulting from the horror facing death or the unreal, and from the irony interwoven by the narrator. In doing so Moncada problematizes any attempt to reconstruct historical memory based on literature.

In the article we study two visions of the city. A “classical” and allegorical one is included in Christine de Pizan’s well-known oeuvre, Le Livre de la Cité des Dames (1404/1405). We compare it to a biographically conditioned construction from the essays "Digues que m’estimes encara que sigui mentida" (1991) by the Catalan writer Montserrat Roig. The key factor in our analysis is the chronotope structure and the relationship between the image of the city and the writing act. We note a number of similarities between the two visions, some of them stemming from the identity and the social and cultural situation of the feminine subject, but also point out some differences, as those determined by the historical context of both texts and their literary genres.

Tematem artykułu jest sytuacja literatury tworzonej w Hiszpanii w języku mniejszościowym, katalońskim, i ocena szans, jakie literatura w tym języku miała na pokonanie stereotypu literatury peryferyjnej, a także recepcja tej literatury przedstawiona z perspektywy synchronicznej, współczesnej Àngelowi Guimerze, w Katalonii, w Hiszpanii i za granicą, a następnie w perspektywie diachronicznej – przełomu XX i XXI wieku. Pretekstem do poruszenia tego tematu stało się wielokrotne podejmowanie przez rodaków katalońskiego dramaturga Àngela Guimery prób (ostatecznie nieudanych) zarekomendowania go do Literackiej Nagrody Nobla. 
This article is concerned with literature created in Spain in the minority language of Catalan, examining the question of whether this literature could ever overcome its stereotypical reputation as peripheral. The article is also concerned with the reception of this literature, both from synchronic perspective – contemporaneous with Catalan playwright Àngel Guimerà, in Catalonia, Spain and abroad – and the diachronic perspective of the turn of the 20th century. The impetus to address this topic has come from renewed and ultimately unsuccessful attempts by Àngel Guimerà’s compatriots to nominate him for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
