    The Tarnawce I profile, which occurs in the marginal eastern part of the Polish Westem Carpathians, contains loesses sq representing three last glacial cycles. In this paper we report the results of pollen analysis of the Eemian-Early Glacial pedocomplex and of the Lower plcni-Visrulian loesses with an interstadiał paleosol. The pollen spectra of22 samples were determined. The pollen diagram was divided into 7 local pollen assemblage zones (L PAZ). Interglacial climatic optimum was recorded with the Eemian type of vegetation in the T-4 zone. The coldest conditions occurred during the accumulation of loess, which separates the interglacial and interstadiał soils.

    The region between the Wieliczka Foothills and the Beskid Makowski Mts. has yielded new data on the accumulation of loess-like deposits during the Vistulian Glaciation. The grain-size distibution and the heavy mineral composition, particularly the significant presence of amphiboles, indicates on aeolian origin for these silty deposits. The silt was most probably derived from glaciofluvial deposits in the Carpathian forelands. Among the Quaternary deposits which accumulated during the Vistulian Glaciation and Holocene, three horizons of loess-like deposits (correlated with the lower, middle and upper younger loesses of the Lublin Upland), three horizons of solifluction deposits, and three horizons of deluvial deposits were distinguished. The accumulation of seven alluvial successions in the Raba and Harbutówka River valleys encompasses a large part of the Quaternary - from the South Polish Glaciations (terraces VII and VI) up to the Holocene (terraces II and I). The lithostratigraphy of the slope deposits (solifluctional and deluvial) and loess-like deposits has been estabilished mainly on the basis of 14C dates of the palaeosol horizons. One of these dates, combined with palynological analysis, confirmed the existence of a warmer period in the Denekamp Interstadial (31 200 +/- 1000 years BP in the Harbutowice-1 section). The dates obtained fromthe Jastrzębia-1 (20 760 +/- 300 years BP) and Polanka-1 (20 980 +/- 310 years BP and 14 510 +/- 150 years BP) sections point to periods favouring the development of soils in the younger and terminal parts of the Younger Pleniglacial. These results, consistent with the dates obtained by other investigators, point to the existence of a warmer period (between 24-20 ka BP) in southern Poland during the maximum development of the ice sheet (Main Stadial) during the last glaciation in northern Poland.

    Nineteen samples were collected from four loess profiles: Dybawka, Tarnawce, Dankowice and Biały Kościół for purposes of TL and OSL dating. The samples were collected from loess, interstadial fossil soil, Eemian soil and Holocene soil. The results were presented in the form of TL=f (OSL) date chart. The majority of TL dates are older than OSL dates. The results of LMg luminescence dating run parallel to the straight line of equal ages. The chart shows a high similarity of TL and OSL dates. The results are consistent with the stratigraphic diagnosis. Loess grains frequently show an age heterogeneity (two or more OSL dates are provided for a single sample).

    Ewolucja sieci komunikacyjnej jest odzwierciedleniem przemian społecznych i gospodarczych zachodzących na Pogórzu Karpackim. Pierwotna sieć głównych szlaków komunikacyjnych uzależniona była ściśle od warunków terenowych. Wraz z rozwojem gospodarczym regionu i postępem technicznym zaczęto budować drogi na terenach wcześniej uznanych za niekorzystne. Nowe drogi poprowadzono blisko sieci osadniczej zlokalizowanej w dolinach. W efekcie najstarsze główne trakty wytyczone pierwotnie po wierzchowinach zostały zdegradowane do roli dojazdów do pól bądź całkowicie wyłączone z użytkowania. Występujące współcześnie w krajobrazie Pogórza opuszczone wcięcia drogowe starych szlaków są jedyny śladem dawnego układu komunikacyjnego.
    Road network evolution reflects social and economical transformation on Carpathians Foothills. Original network of main communication routes was strictly conditioned by the local relief. Along with economical and technological development new roads were built - on the areas previously considered as impassable. They were led along the valleys where the settlement was located. In effect the oldest main roads, which were originally led across the tophills, are today degraded to access roads or even completely excluded from use. Abandoned road cuts found today on foothills landscape are the traces of old communication network.

    Wskaźnik rocznej erozyjności deszczu i spływu powierzchniowego (R) jest jednym z parametrów empirycznego równania USLE (Uniwersalnego Równania Strat Glebowych) oraz innych modeli (np. RUSLE – Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation, USPED – Unit Stream Power based Erosion/Deposition). Jak dotąd nie dokonano szczegółowej charakterystyki erozyjności deszczów w Polsce, a wartości wskaźnika R zgodnie z procedurą opracowaną przez Wischmeiera i Smitha (1965, 1978) obliczono jedynie dla 13 stacji meteorologicznych. Celem pracy jest określenie wskaźnika erozyjności deszczu i spływu powierzchniowego (R) dla regionu klimatu Pogórza Karpackiego na podstawie pomiarów opadów atmosferycznych w wieloleciu 1987–2008 pochodzących ze stacji meteorologicznej w Łazach k. Bochni (Pogórze Wiśnickie). Średnia roczna z wielolecia 1987–2008 wartość wskaźnika R wynosi w Łazach 106,6 MJ cm ha–1 h–1. Jest ona większa od wartości podawanych dla Polski zachodniej (Wrocław-Swojec), północnej (Elbląg), północno-wschodniej (Suwałki), centralnej (Otwock, Sandomierz, Puczniew), zbliżona do wartości podawanych dla Karpat (Lesko, Limanowa, Szymbark). Roczne wartości wskaźnika R zmieniały się w Łazach w bardzo szerokim zakresie od 27,7 do 455,9 MJ cm ha–1 h–1. Maksymalne miesięczne wartości wskaźnika Rr w roku zmieniały się od 6,1 w lipcu (1993) do 428,7 MJ cm ha–1 h–1 w czerwcu (2006). Największa potencjalna erozja wodna gleby uzależniona od erozyjności deszczu możliwa była w czerwcu, lipcu, maju i sierpniu.
    Rainfall and runoff erosivity factor (R) is a key input parameter to the USLE (Universal Soil Loss Equation) and many other models (RUSLE – Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation, USPED – Unit Stream Power based Erosion/Deposition). There is still no precise characteristic of rainfall erosivity in Poland. Local R factor values, according to Wischmeier and Smith procedure (1965, 1978) were calculated only for 13 meteorological stations. The main aim of the paper is to estimate rainfall and runoff erosivity factor (R) for the Carpathian Foothills climatic region on the basis of 1987–2008 rainfall data for Łazy near Bochnia meteorological station (Wiśnicz Foothills). The average rainfall and runoff factor (R) for Łazy calculated for the years 1987–2008 equalled 106.6 MJ cm ha–1 h–1. This value was bigger in comparison with the values for other locations in western (Wrocław-Swojec), northern (Elbląg) northeastern (Suwałki) or central Poland (Otwock, Sandomierz, Puczniew) and similar to the values for the Carpathians (Lesko, Limanowa, Szymbark). The annual values of R factor for Łazy ranged between 27.7 in 1993 and 455.9 MJ cm ha–1 h–1 in 2006. Maximum monthly values of rainfall factor Rr in a year varied from 6.1 in July (1993) to 428.7 MJ cm ha–1 h–1 in June (2006). The most intensive potential soil erosion by water due to erosivity of rains is likely to happen in June, July, May and August.

    The Brzanka Mountain Range in the Ciężkowickie Foothills has a dense river network. Unfortunately the contemporary maps contain only the names of some main rivers of the Brzanka Mountain Range. Local communities use the same set of names of rivers as cartographers, while studies in the historical geography of the Brzanka Mountain Range reveal a wealth of local hydronyms that have seemingly been forgotten. The article attempts both to reconstruct a set of hydronyms of the Brzanka Mountain Range and to explain their etymology. It shows that hydronyms change over time and that studies on local hydronyms can help restore the collection of the names of rivers in the Brzanka Mountain Range and provide interesting information related to the past of this region. Moreover, they reveal contemporary unknown facts related to the natural environment and settlement processes in the Middle Ages. A visual summary of the article is a map showing the Brzanka Mountain Range with its river network and associated hydronyms.

    In the area of the Carpathian Foothills, gas exhalations are a frequently observed phenomenon. It is connected with the presence of many shallow gas horizons in the autochthonous Miocene. In addition, gas migration effect is intensified due to the complicated geological structure in this region. During drilling boreholes, one of the most important requirements is to ensure adequate tightness in the annular space. In connection with the above, laboratory tests were carried out in the Oil and Gas Institute - National Research Institute, whose aim was to assess the impact of applied drilling fluids on the degree of sealing the annular space on the contact hardened cement slurry - rock formation, for specific geological and technical conditions. The result of the conducted research work was a modification of the composition of washing fluids in terms of improving the efficiency of their impact on the wall of borehole and removal of mudcake formed by the drilling muds, as well as modification of cement slurry formulations by application appropriate additives to prevent gas migration. During research work have been indicated potential causes of gas migration from the annular space in the selected holes drilled in the Carpathian Foothills and preventive actions aimed at reduction gas migration and exhalation.

    The aim of the paper is to present funeral customs of communities that inhabited the Carpathian foothills of Vistula and San rivers basins at the Final Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age representing Corded Ware and Mierzanowice cultures in the light of new chronometric data. These radiocarbon data were obtained for barrows at site 3 in Średnia, Przemyśl district and Jawczyce, Wieliczka district site 1, mound 2. According to conduct-ed investigations the earliest barrows in this region can be dated to the beginning of the 29th century BC. Then in the younger phase of the Corded Ware culture the exploitation of existing mound continued so subsequent graves were dug into the embankment. This burial rite lasted until the turn of the 24th and 23rd centuries BC so can be synchronised with the presence of niche graves to the north of Carpathian foothills. Afterwards during the Early Bronze Age starting at the 22nd century BC communities of the Mierzanowice culture also chose existing mounds as a place to bury their dead. Therefore one can con-clude that in funeral rites of the Corded Ware and Mierzanowice cultures groups in the Carpathian foothills the barrow as the burial place of their ancestors played the main role.

    This article presents the results of archaeological and metallurgical research on two axes made of bronze, discovered in 2020 in two locations: Izdebki, Brzozów district and Gogołów, Strzyżów district. It was possible to determine the cultural context and chronological affiliation of the artefacts. The axe from Izdebki was classified as a type with elevated edges, dated to the BrB phase and associated with the Otomani-Füzesabony culture, whereas the item from Gogołów was classified as a socketed axe with ornamented sides, dated to the period corresponding to HaB1–HaB3. An analysis of the metallurgical composition of objects was carried out, examining the cores and their surfaces (corrosion layers). It was established that both axes represent so-called tin bronzes. The discovered artefacts should probably be considered loose finds.
