Opis:
This article includes a terminological discussion regarding the notion of camp literature. Within Polish literary science, it is usually applied to literature raising the topic of German Nazi camps, particularly concentration camps and death camps, and, though less often, to Soviet camps, particularly forced labour camps. Yet the definition has proved to be excessively narrow. It should also cover, previously less studied, works of Polish literature regarding, i.a. the Polish concentration camp in Bereza Kartuska, the communist labour camps established in post-WWII Poland, and the Spanish concentration camp in Miranda de Ebro. The notion camp literature could also be applied to works devoted to internment camps, POW camps, or even ghettoes.

Opis:
The article contains terminological considerations concerning the term ‘camp literature’. In Polish literary studies it is most often referred to literature dealing with German Nazi camps, in particular concentration camps and death camps, and, less frequently, Soviet camps, especially forced labor camps. However, this definition turns out to be too narrow. It should also include the lesser-known works of Polish literature concerning, among others, the Polish internment camp (concentration camp) in Bereza Kartuska, communist labor camps set up in postwar Poland and the Spanish (Francoist) concentration camp in Miranda de Ebro. The term ‘camp literature’ could also include works on internment camps, prisoner camps, and even ghettos. The camp literaturę (not only Polish writings) requires, what is very important, a comparative approach.

Opis:
In the article the author discusses the beginnings of Polish camp literature, more precisely: literature referring to the Nazi German concentration camps. For decades it was assumed that the earliest Polish texts of that type were published in 1945. It appears that the first works – reports and memoirs – were published before the outbreak of WWII. In this article, the author discusses them in the historical and historical-literary contexts (mainly in the context of German writings).

Opis:
The article introduces the category of "gaygothic " or “queer gothic”hitherto unknown in Poland and indicates its anticipations in Maria Janion’s work. The textfocuses on interpreting the episodic novel “Skandal w Wesołych Bagniskach [Scandal in Merry Swamps] by Michał Choromański, published in book form several decades after its original release in newspapers. One hypothesis suggests that this novel could inspire Witold Gombrowicz to write "The Possessed". Choromański’s novel is read as a pastiche of Gothic novels and at the same time contemporary accumulation of cultural tropes of homosexuality (allusions to works by Iwaszkiewicz, Witkiewicz, Czechowicz or Sobański).

In September 1939 in Działdowo the Nazis established a transit camp for the war prisoners of the Polish September Campaign of 1939 in the former barracks of the 32 infantry regiment on Grunwaldzka Street. At the turn of 1939 and 1940 the police and the SS authorities in Königsberg transformed the Działdowo camp into the transit camp „Durchgangslager“. Priests imprisoned in the Działdowo camp from autumn 1939 to autumn 1941 constituted a special group of political prisoners. The archbishop Antoni Julian Nowowiejski and the bishop Leon Wetmański, Płock bishop suffragan, were brought to the Działdowo camp in 1941. The Płock bishops quickly became spiritual guides and the support for the prisoners in difficult moments of camp life. In order to prevent their contacts with the prisoners, the bishops were put in a separate cell number 12. They were subjected to different kinds of moral and physical torture, including the attempt to profane the cross. Difficult living conditions in the camp soon led to the death of the Płock priests: the archbishop Antoni Julian Nowowiejski died on 28 May 1941 and the bishop Leon Wetmański died on 10 October 1941. Apart from them, 47 priests and 1 seminarian lost their lives in the Działdowo camp in 1939–1945.

Lidar-derivatives gathered during the realization of IT System of Country’s Protection Against Extreme Hazards (so-called ISOK programme) have initialized the non-invasive archaeological research concerning the preservation of the relicts of the former prisoner of war and internment camp in Tuchola, Poland. The camp functioned during the Great War (1914–1918) and the Polish-Soviet War (1919–1921). This paper discusses and summaries the preliminary results of this research. It argues that the use of ethnographic methods can supplement and enrich the historical records related to the camp. The article discusses in detail the assemblage of material culture made, remade, or personalized by prisoners and internees documented during the research. These artefacts are unique examples of trench art. Discussionconcerning the objects is the main goal of this paper. They are the first examples of the trench art related to the Tuchola camp analyzed in the archaeological literature.

Opis:
The author describes a mode of sensibility called ‘Camp’. She concentrates on the most characteristic features of it, especially on the ambivalence of any assessments, specific playful type of seriousness, theatricalization, artificiality, superior role of inverted commas and emphasis. While analyzing connections between Camp and homosexual subculture, the author stresses the role of the artists’ deepened self-consciousness and their deceitful distance towards their own works of art. Those features are especially noticeable in their playing with the conventions and with the principles of good taste. While describing the presence of Camp in the Polish literature, the author emphasises the roles of relativity, both aesthetical and moral. The elements of Camp are distinguished in the ‘banalistic’ literature and in the prose of Grzegorz Musiał, but the main part of the text is devoted to the prose of Michał Witkowski, in which we can find an intriguing combination of the sublimity and mockery, gloss and trumpery, spirituality and hedonism. Those features, inseparably connected with the stylistic of Camp, are constantly present in the prose of Witkowski. It makes him the most important representative of the discussed mode of sensibility in Poland.

Rozwój wydarzeń militarnych w Europie i postępujące ochłodzenie w stosunkach radziecko-niemieckich skłaniał władze ZSRR ku takiemu rozwiązaniu. W Griazowcu wyselekcjonowaną grupę jeńców zamierzano poddać wzmożonej indoktrynacji i „rozpracowaniu”, by w ten sposób uczynić ich przydatnymi do realizacji celów politycznych władz radzieckich.
The article presents actions taken in the prison camp in Gryazovets. They served as a kind of political-military experiment aiming to attract some Polish officers to the Soviet plans to create the Polish name (“red” for the intentions of the Kremlin) for the military unit in the Red Army. Staying in the camp was an opportunity to select possible participants in this project. The development of military events in Europe and progressive cooling down in the Soviet-German relations led the Soviet authorities towards such a solution. In Gryazovets a selected group of prisoners was intended to be intensively indoctrinated so as to make them useful to the political objectives of the Soviet authorities.

It should be emphasized that the subject matter was chosen well, the high level and quality of the texts, as well as the very high competences of the authors of the publication. There are still many blank spots in Polish-Russian relations awaiting disclosure and publication. A large role in this is played by scientists from the Institute of National Remembrance (Instytut Pamięci Narodowej) and other scientific and research environments, both in Poland and abroad. The book "Jeńcy 1920" should be of interest not only to researchers of the history of the 20th century, but also to the inhabitants of the city and the commune of Wadowice.

Cyclic AMP dependent protein kinase (PKA) from Pichia pastoris yeast cells was found to be activated by either cAMP or cGMP. Analogs of cAMP such as 8-chloro-cAMP and 8-bromo-cAMP were as potent as cAMP in PKA activation while N6,2'-O-dibutyryl-cAMP did not stimulate the enzyme activity. It was shown that protamine sulfate was almost equally phosphorylated in the presence of 1-2 × 10-6 M cAMP or cGMP while other substrates such as Kemptide, ribosomal protein S6, were phosphorylated to a lower extent in the presence of cGMP. It was demonstrated that pyruvate kinase is a substrate of PKA which co-purified with the P. pastoris enzyme. Moreover, pyruvate kinase was phosphorylated by PKA in the presence of cAMP and cGMP to comparable levels.

In an age when the global dissemination of digital information is transforming the way we read and write by foregrounding the interdependence of visual/verbal elements and languages, the reconstruction of identity and history in digital environments challenges binary translation processes. From this perspective, we interrogate the integration of visual and verbal elements in three Wikipedia articles, written in Polish, English, and Portuguese, about the topic “Polish death camp”. What is the role of translation in the semiotic construction of historical discourses in these articles? What are the conflicts generated by translated denominations? How do Wikipedia communities engage with the production of these cognitiverepresentations? This paper attempts to answer these questions.

Opis:
W zakończeniu opracowania wskazano natomiast, w jaki sposób Przekładaniec sygnalizuje uwikłanie ciała i płci w różnorodne relacje społeczne i kulturowe.
The article discusses Przekładaniec (Roly Poly, 1968) – a television production by Andrzej Wajda, based on the script by Stanisław Lem – in the context of bodily and sexual otherness. The author of the text describes the methods of coding otherness used by the creators, paying attention primarily to the camp style characteristic of the production. Wajda’s camp strategy, based on bodily excess and irony, made it possible to emphasize the performative and ad hoc nature of gender roles, and to denaturalize the concept of gender itself. The article also discusses the figure of the androgyne, which recurs in the movie, and which also deconstructs the idea of gender binary. The study concludes by pointing out how Roly Poly signals the entanglement of the body and gender in various social and cultural relations.

Opis:
Aresztowanych torturowano i zabijano.
This paper covers events connected with the occupation and creation of camps and other sites of internment of the Polish and the Jews in Działdowo during 1939‒1945. On the first of September 1939 the town was attacked by German soldiers who gained control of the positions in the market square without a single gunshot. During the war in the area of the town and in the vicinity sites for internment of POW’s were organized, the civilian population of Polish and Jewish nationality. Arrested persons were tortured and killed in rooms of the house. Since December 1939 the Gestapo arrest was moved to the barracks where the activity of the transitory camp for the Polish began. Among them were priests, teachers, clerks, diplomats. In fact, this camp served as a place of extermination for all categories of prisoners, Polish political activists, displaced persons and Jews. The inhabitants of Działdowo and neighbouring localities were unintentional witnesses of these crimes. Due to lack of documents one can assess the number of victims at about 15 thousands victims. This action ended in the middle of April. The camp has been transformed into the camp of educational labour for persons refusing to work. Soon the camp changed its character as a penalty camp. Taking into consideration life and labour difficult conditions of this camp and high number of its victims, this camp has been treated on a par with the concentration camps. Therefore the former prisoners of complex camp in Działdowo have received identical benefits.

The object of the article are aspects of penitentiary system of Russian Federation based on two pints of view: Polish and Russian. The aim is to highlight the essence, the content and range but also conditioning and tendencies for changes in the context of international ambitions and role of Russia but also widely knowing term like security of nation I case of penitentiary system of such country. Popularised and worked out in 2006 by European Prison Rules (Recommendations Rec (2006)2) the idea of normalisation, meaning minimalization some effects of imprisonment, will have a long way to find appropriate using in Russian penitentiary practice, which is directed mostly on giving a penalty for somebody. It is such seen both by the society and the government. The most accurate opinion is management policy of Federal Prison Service became as it were the model of country in which monopoly to rule belong to weight structures. In all, there is no humanisation of current justice, because the cult of prison is constantly observed and judicial reform transpired strongly illusory. The lack of control for penitentiary system by the social organisation is the effect of many omissions. In the source literature is appeared many opinions that in Russia the prison culture permeated to the every spheres of life.

The text shows the beginnings of Japanese animation, called ‘anime’ for short, its essential parts and the overall canon. The most important aspect of this work is finding the answer whether anime and all its related products are associated with kitsch, camp or should they be interpreted as something completely different.

Besides their bonds with the town of Wadowice, they also shared the expieience of the second world war and of the fight with the German invader. Although, as officers, they seemed to be obliged to combat with the enemy, the decision to put up resistance was never easy. Their fates were once again linked in Auschwitz, where they were sent as a result repressive organized by the Nazis.

The document refers to Polish officers seized by the NKVD authorities in the summer of 1940 from internment camps in Lithuania and Latvia and imprisoned in the Kozelsk camp. The prisoners were subjected to massive indoctrination aimed at changing their ideological and political attitudes and recruiting from amongst them secret collaborators (confidants). Several dozens of Polish officers of lower ranks with leftist views started to cooperate, to varying degrees, with the Soviet authorities. They advocated close military and political cooperation with the USSR. They were ostracised by a vast majority of prisoners of war who remained faithful to their military oath.

Opis:
The article takes up an issue of structuring two different models of masculinity that are presented on the pages of Gombrowicz’s novel. Confrontation of anachronistic, Polish, Sarmatian masculinity and modern otherness of South American masculinity results in revision of Polish national forms. It enables unsealing the limits of the notion ’masculinity’ which is closed in Eurocentric definitions. Cultural diversity of Argentinian and Polish men might be expressed by postcolonial theories. The author analyses Gombrowicz’s texts and uses terms, such as hybrid masculinity (Eduardo Archetti) or plebeian masculinities (Pablo Ben). The idea of homeland is strongly connected with hegemoniczna masculinity and national ideology. It is faced with the concept of Synczyzna (Sonland) that is based on a model of demotic and hybrid masculinity and becomes the subject of normativizing and nationalizing discourse.Polish Sarmatian masculinity presented in comparison to Argentinian culture seems to be the excess and it allows the author to draw a conlusion about masculine camp, or even sarmatic one.

The goal is to show how the author interprets and contextualizes memory practices in today’s Russia and which texts are crucial for her as manifestations of these remembering strategies (and forgetting as well). Reading this book allows to form the thesis that the extreme experience of the Soviet camps is still a controversial issue in the Russian culture and that the memory of it is full of gaps and empty spaces, even though at the same time this subject increasinly finds its way into popular cultural (graphic novels and crime thrillers).

The in vitro formation of transcription complexes with Escherichia coli RNA polymerase was monitored using fluorescence anisotropy measurements of labeled fragments of DNA. The multicomponent system consisted of holo or core RNA polymerase (RNAP) and lac or gal promoter fragments of DNA (in different configurations), in the presence or absence of CRP activator protein (wt or mutants) with its ligand, cAMP. Values of the apparent binding constants characterizing the system were obtained, as a result of all processes taking place in the system. The interaction of the promoters with core RNAP in the absence of CRP protein was characterized by apparent binding constants of 0.67 and 1.9 × 106 M-1 for lac166 and gal178, respectively, and could be regarded as nonspecific. The presence of wt CRP enhanced the strength of the interaction of core RNAP with the promoter, and even in the case of gal promoter it made this interaction specific (apparent binding constant 2.93 × 107 M-1). Holo RNAP bound the promoters significantly more strongly than core RNAP did (apparent binding constants 1.46 and 40.14 × 106 M-1 for lac166 and gal178, respectively), and the presence of CRP also enhanced the strength of these interactions. The mutation in activator region 1 of CRP did not cause any significant disturbances in the holo RNAP-lac promoter interaction, but mutation in activator region 2 of the activator protein substantially weakened the RNAP-gal promoter interaction.

The article analyses the conditions of stay and moral attitude of the interned Ukrainian soldiers in Wadowice camp (Poland). It was proved that Ukrainian interned soldiers’ everyday life was connected with a lot of difficulties that were caused by the overpopulation of the camp and quite rough regime of the interns’ stay. Furthermore, indisposed, malevolent and even hostile attitude towards the Ukrainian interned soldiers took place, particularly from the officials at the camp. Consequently, it caused the demoralization of the Ukrainian warriors who did not have national patriotic feelings. These conditions led to the necessity of strengthening the moral spirit of camp dwellers. Cultural and educational departments of the division, camp theatre and other cultural and art centers were responsible for this mission along with the humanitarian aid from the camp affiliate YMCA.

The reflection on the works of Hundertwasser will consider both the criteria included in Susan Sontag’s text “Notes on Camp”, which is fundamental to camp aesthetics, as well as the later considerations of Camp researchers who pay attention not so much to the object as to the person who camps (Czapliński, Booth, Meyer, Mauriès). “The eye of the beholder”, i.e. sensitivity of the recipient, will also be important for camp. The key issue will be colour without which it would be difficult to write about the Austrian artist’s objects in the context of camp aesthetics. The following text is an attempt at a new perspective on Hundertwasser and perhaps it will serve the acceptance of “misfits” as well as their “otherness” and will broaden the fields of mutual acceptance.
Analiza zostanie przeprowadzona w odniesieniu do tekstów teoretycznych i bezpośredniego doświadczenia.

The article concerns the literary representations of the Polish communist labor camp in Jaworzno (1945–1956), especially Seweryna Szmaglewska’s short story Amnestia zastukała do bram (1956, Amnesty knocked at the gates), Kazimierz Koźniewski’s novel Bunt w więzieniu (1968, Rebellion in the prisonhouse), and Sławomir Mrożek’s short story Jaworzno (1985). The object of the paper is also the problem of ideological involvement of Polish literature and writers (especially during the Stalinist period), the reasons for “overlooking” by them (and by Polish society) the obvious manifestations of communist terror. His alleged “invisibility” was analogous to the “invisibility” of crimes committed by the Nazis, allegedly unnoticed by the Third Reich citizens. Among Polish writers this analogy between Nazism and communism was exposed by Mrożek, the similarities between both totalitarianisms were perceived also by Szmaglewska and Czesław Miłosz.

Nowe lokomotywy spalinowe do pociągów pasażerskich pochodzą z fabryki w Kołomnie (Rosja), a importowane z dawnej Czechsłowacji zostały zmodernizowane.
Belarussian Railway (BC) has purchased number of modern rolling stock last times - locomotives and motor units (both diesel and electric). Additionally, some locomotives have been modernized (all are diesel ones). Main railway lines are electrified (25 kV 50 Hz), but more than half are not in Belarus. Practically, all lines are broad gauge (1520 mm). New rolling stock was produced by non-Soviet manufacturers (until this time, BC has not used Westem-built locomotives and cars). The novum are fast regional daily-trains from Mińsk to main cities in Belarus - Baranovichy, Brest, Orsha, and others (on electrified lines), where Stadler-built Flirt trains are exploited. Additionally, suburban railway was created in Mińsk agglomeration, where also Flirt emus are exploited (slight changed version in companson to regional ones). For non-electrified lines, diesel cars and motor units were built by Pesa (Poland). New diesel locomotives have been built in Kolomna works (Russia) for passenger trains providing, and some exploited nowadays locos built in Czechoslovakia by CKD have been modernized. For freight trains providing, new electric locomotives based on Prima-Alstom ones have been purchased in China and next ones ordered.

The article examines the question of the concentration camp space and the figure of the “Muslim” in the novel Les Boucs (1955) by the Moroccan writer Driss Chraïbi. Published ten years after the war, the novel nevertheless uses certain motifs from the literature of the camps. Even if the geography of “Arab Paris” in North African literature has been well described and analyzed, the kinship of the Goats with concentration camp literature has not received sufficient attention. Therefore, in my study I will first recall the circumstances of publication of the novel and the main lines of its reception by critics to then move on to the analysis of the concentrationary space in the novel. The link with the space of the camps will finally be reinforced by the evocation of the figure of the “Muslim”, well known from the testimonies and expressly exploited by Driss Chraïbi.

Opis:
This article has been published in 1951 in the Bulletin of rhe Main Commission for the Investigation of the Hitler Crimes in Poland. After 60 years past the end of the Second World War, we have decided to republish it, driven by a belief that its content - presentation of Hoess’ personality uncovered in criminology studies, as well as the mechanisms behind his rise to becoming one of the biggest war criminals ever, deserves another reminder in the contemporary times.         The article has been prepared based on long hours of life investigation on the person of Rudolf Hoess by prof. Batawia in a Warsaw prison, and also on an auto-biography of Hoess - an important historical document. Prof. Batawia presents Hoess’ personality in connection with historical processes of the epoque, with Hitler’s fascism, with social conditions that Hoess lived in.         In the introduction there is a brief presentation of documents with the goals and plans of Hitler’s imperialism - conquering Europe, the exploitation of the labour force in different countries, systematic biological destruction of the nations, conquered the mass human extermination of the ‘lower’ races and nations. There is a short description of the biggest concentration camp in Auschwitz where merciless exploitation of the labour force was a daily occurrence, where hundreds of thousands of prisoners were exterminated also with at least 250 000 Jewish people who cannot be called prisoners for straight after their arrival they were directed to gas chambers.         Who was the chief commandant of the Auschwitz camp - the place of suffering and death of millions of people from all over Europe?         This work is an attempt to answer that question examining his family environment and his life experiences.         His father was a German army officer raising his son in a rigorous atmosphere of strict moral rules, religious fanatism, in unconditional respect for adults whose opinions Hoess treated as mostly righteous and absolutely certain. Rudolf Hoess was a hard working and obedient student, yet his school results were average, he read little, too. During the First World War he wanted to join the army but he was too young; he helped in an army hospital where he had difficulties coping with human hurt and with the dieing of the wounded, yet with time he began getting used to it. At the age of 16 he was an exemplary German soldier, left under spell of the soldierly customs, the tough army discipline, he listened to all orders and was absolutely obedient to his supreme officers. At the age of 17 he was the youngest non-commissioned officer awarded First Class Iron Cross. After the cease-fire he signed up for the Voluntary Baltic Corps in Królewiec, a strongly right wing, nationalistic army organisation. It was made up of ex-army soldiers, who could not accept Germany’s loss of the war, the new situation within their country, unemployed people, declassed and pauperised as well as of simple trouble makers. The corps were managed by extremely nationalistic circles, the Junkers and the Military, revenge and terror against political enemies were their ideology. Hoess considered it a patriotic military organisation, defending arm’s honour after the war defeat and building bases for new powerful Germany. He was uncritical of his supervisors’ believes and considered them the only truthful ones. This was his preparation by the precursors of Hitlerism to take up the NSDAP ideology, which he joined 1922 recognising Hitler’s programme as attractive in the contemporary situation of Germany. In 1923 he was sentenced for 10 years of imprisonment for participation in murder of an ex-member of the Corps, sentenced to death by the vehmgericht for treachery. He spent 6 years in prison, he was an exemplary prisoner, unconditionally obedient, thoroughly fulfilling all of his prison duties, who believed it was deeply immoral to behave the way his fellow criminal prisoners did. He read a lot while in captivity, mostly books sent by his friends about the national-socialist ideology. He was released in amnesty and left political activity, settling in a tranquillity of a countryside and working as a farmer. Approving of the NSDAP ideology he condemned the brutality and immoral level of the methods used there and of its many members. After 3 years of managing a farm where he worked, he was offered a job of organising a horse squad of SS, which he accepted immediately, seeing in SS, as he claimed, only soldiers, eminent in their faithfulness to the party ideology. This decision came with his general admission to the SS, and next with a hesitant decision to enter the active SS after Himmler’s offer. He was trained in the concentration camp in Dachau. It was not at all different to a regular training. The trainees were taught certain types of stereotypical behaviours, reacting in an changeable, standard way with a suppression of criticism towards particular stimuli and own reactions. Certain words, symbols were to create a ready made, involuntary reactions. Methods used in such training were to weaken one’s critical thinking, higher emotions, and ability to control aggressive tendencies by means of ethical values. These methods aimed at dehumanising a human being, turning it into an individual with a harmed psyche. The very anti-rational ideology of nationalist-socialists favoured a diminishing of intellect. The SS were prepared to obey orders blindly, especially those of Fuhrer, whose person ind rightness they were taught to believe in uncritically. The primary role was played by the apotheosis of hatred and killing in oneself any compassion for the enemy. The training aimed at familiarising the SS men with cruelty and prepared them for active participation in acts of aggression. That also concerned Hoess who, as he claimed, under a mask of indifference controlled his compassionate feelings for cruelly treated prisoners. He also applied for being moved to the army formation, which he was eventually refused. After several years of serving in the Dachau concentration camp he was moved to another camp in Sachsenhausen where he was promoted to vice-commandant. In 1940 he was made responsible for organising a concentration camp in Auschwitz where he was finally made a commandant.         He never doubted the point and rightness of concentration camps, believing that the enemies of the IIIrd Reich should be isolated and that all orders should always be obeyed. He treated extremely seriously the task he was given and he put a lot of effort to be an exemplary SS man. He believed deeply and unconditionally in the nationalist-socialist ideology. However, he never, as he admitted, hated the prisoners, the Jews, the Communists, or the political criminals, he regarded them as enemies who, for the better good, should be put out of action. He wished to make Auschwitz an exemplary concentration camp, to make it the best at accomplishing the economic tasks during the war time. From the very beginning, in his own words, he faced severe obstacles, he was sent the worst kind of SS soldiers, he was prevented from creating better conditions for the prisoners. He did not understand that the central government was aiming at such very extermination of the peoples inhabiting the occupied countries. He did see the masses of dead corpses, he was aware of the numerous incidents of tortured prisoners, but having no personal contact with them he thought of them as a mass, on top of that he was powerless while his interventions were without effects. Why didn’t he resign observing the turning of a concentration camp into an extermination camp? He considered that strange to an SS man’s behaviour. The order of the ‘Final Solution’ of the Jewish question was in his opinion horrifying, but being it a Hitler’s order - no one had the right to question it. When directing the exiermination action, looking at gas killings of women and children he felt, as he claimed, fear, objection and disgust, yet it was not a compassion, for it is difficult to feel compassion towards a mass. He admitted to having directed an extermination action of 1 200 000 Jews from all over Europe.         2nd of April 1947 Rudolf Hoess was sentenced to death by the Highest National Tribunal in Warsaw.        The life of the commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp shows that he was not an abnormal individual, emotions free, with sadistic tendencies. It reveals he was a man of average intelligence, little critical, easily submitting to any authority. He was an introvert, used to a very serious attitude towards his own duties which he fulfilled with extreme thoroughness and passion. These qualities of his, have been well utilised by Hitlerism. We can clearly observe a metamorphosis of once socially harmless individual into a kind of fascist mentality, into a criminal of rarely met dimension. His story shows that fascist ideology can push into the tracks of major cruelty even those individuals who might seem far from brutal or cruel. That a fascist ideology can turn people personally incapable of harming victims, into war criminals of incomparable dimension. The truth about very significant reasons behind the tragic events of that time emerges, as well as a warning for the future.

The aim of this article is to answer the question whether the dreams of Auschwitz prisoners had a therapeutic function. The author selected 51 dreams (out of 208 dreams reported in 1973 by former Auschwitz inmates) from which it followed that a particular dream had some kind of a positive influence on the dreamer: on his or her mood, frame of mind, faith in the possibility of survival and liberation, or even his or her health condition. The author found three dominant groups of such dreams: “caring” dreams, “freedom” dreams, and metaphorical dreams, and described their helping effects.

On 21 November, 1920 UPR Army in continuous battles had to go to the Zbruch. Weapons and military equipment have been transferred to the Polish authorities. Army personnel were interned in line with international standards. Extremely difficult conditions for troops interned in Poland demanded immediate action to improve the moral and morale of the soldiers. The primary means of overcoming the feeling of despair and inner spiritual crisis were a cultural and educational activities. In 1921 was established cultural and educational council of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Army under orders of the UPR troops General command. National, social, cultural, aesthetic, moral and physical education of Ukrainian troops were priority activities of cultural and educational councils. Council was focused on the need for the promotion of the idea of the Ukrainian statehood restoration and military power of Ukraine. Almost all educational activities in camps and units conducted cultural and educational departments of UNR Army divisions that have been established in all Ukrainian troops camps. Council departments were in the camps: Łańcut, Kalisz, Szczypiorno, Strzałkowo, Aleksandrów Kujawski, Wadowice and other. The activity of cultural and educational institutions and groups that were in the camps has contributed to raising the level of education of the UPR Army soldiers to prevent demoralization of prisoners and promoted national and patriotic education. Educational work that began in the camps have laid a solid foundation for further learning Ukrainian troops overseas.

Being a survivor to the Buchenwald concentration camp may implythe inability to tell this tragic experience. Semprun tries to go beyond this difficulty by writing L'écriture ou la vie. His trauma and the camp’s omnipresence determine a noncoincidence between interior and exterior time and the fragmentation of the text. Chronological linearity makes way for a labyrinthic time caractherized by a continuous change of present into past tense and by several flashbacks and metatextual digressions. The latter are also the indication that the elaboration process is underway and this suggests that art in itself makes the evolution possible.

In this text, I analyze Krzysztof Ptak’s contribution to such films as Kornblumenblau and Cynga by Leszek Wosiewicz, and 300 miles to heaven by Maciej Dejczera. These films belong to a time that can be characterized as a period of “hot times”, when Krzysztof Ptak was interested in using cinematographic methods to the limits of their possibilities. As far as the history of Polish cinema is concerned, it was then that Polish directors were looking for a new language to talk about the Polish past. Wosiewicz and Dejczer avoided the accusation of “americanization” of Polish cinema, which was charged to Władysław Pasikowski. This may be because Krzysztof Ptak was the cinematographer of their films.

Szczególny namysł podjęto nad zagadnieniem związanym z sensem cierpienia i przedstawionymi w noweli mechanizmami obrony przed zniewoleniem totalnym.
The aim of the article is to present the typescript of the novella entitled “Naj-większa chwała” along its released version, published under the title “Wigilia w kacecie”. Its author, Fr. Hubert Lach, was a former inmate of the Auschwitz and Mauthausen concentration camps. The author of the study came upon the typescript and the other documents of Fr. Hubert Lach discussed in the text entirely by coincidence while searching the Theological Library of the University of Silesia in 2018. The novella, modified and condensed, was published in the 2010 collection “Camp novellas”. Taking into account the historical context, the author of the article analysed and interpreted the text of the novella, arguing that Fr. Hubert Lach founded the narrative of his numerous works on the letter as a genre of applied literature. The article presents the biographical note of Fr. Hubert Lach and his accomplishments as a writer without providing a critical scientific appraisal of his literature. The focus was placed particularly on the meaning of suffering and the mechanisms of defence against total enslavement as important themes explored in the novella.
