The aim of this article is to examine the structure and the functions of neologisms included in the private letters of Henryk Sienkiewicz. The analysis of the lexis presented in this paper reveals that the writer tended to use the word-formative neologisms, semantical neologisms and functional neologisms most frequently. The expressive function of this neologisms is the prevailing one.

The paper presents the analysis of the influence of selected features of unemployed persons on unemployment duration. Theoretical considerations go along with an empirical study based on individual data from Local Labour Office in Szczecin. The research hypothesis states that features of unemployed persons such as the level of education, sex, work seniority or age have a meaningful influence on unemployment duration. Recent studies usually used event history analysis, inflow-outflow analysis of the labour market or logit models. This research is unique because of the application of one of the methods of multidimensional analysis – correspondence analysis. This method allows analysis of multidimensional relationships between categories of nominal variables. From the results obtained it could be stated that strong relationships between unemployment duration and features of unemployed persons exist (apart from sex).

Opis:
Anna Iwaszkiewiczowa (1897–1980), a Polish writer and translator, undertook to translate a theoretical text by Albert Gleizes (1881–1953), a French cubist painter. The text was published in a Polish monthly “Droga” in 1932. In the same year, Albert Gleizes came to Poland to give lectures on his concept of art in Warsaw and in Łódź. The visit was also organized by Iwaszkiewiczowa, who translated the speeches and supervised the program.The purpose of this article is to present details of this cooperation between the artist and his translator, as well as to analyze Anna Iwaszkiewiczowa’s work with regard to the abovementioned publication and, additionally, to a preserved manuscript of the French original and a draft version of the Polish translation.

The article aims to show the issue of educational travels of noble youth in the modern era. The source is the correspondence of Jakub Dunin from his journeys around Europe in 1699–1703, addressed to father Franciszek Świętosław. The mentioned letters (stored in the National Archives in Krakow in the Tomkowicz Archive from Kobiernice) provide important information referring to the reasons for travelling, travel expenses and the companions. Particularly noteworthy are colorful descriptions of the social life lived in European manors. For example, the author visited Versailles of Louis XIV and provided a detailed description of various ceremonies and court entertainment. Foreign journeys posed an opportunity to learn about foreign cultures, political systems or armies. This encouraged nobility sons’ reflections which they shared with relatives back in Poland. As a result, the travel correspondence abounds in individual interpretations, for example, of the then political developments on the international arena. When confronted with facts, they add extra value to the publication.

Opis:
This article presents a linguistic, stylistic and functional analysis of almost 200 compliments which Henryk Sienkiewicz paid to his closest family members in his letters. The study indicates that complimenting, although not very frequent, is an important act of linguistic courtesy in epistolary conversation. As discussed, the principal function of compliments was to make family relationships more enjoyable as well as to express positive emotions towards loved ones. The writer’s compliments are most often complex and characterised by variety in terms of lexis, and they have a great artistic value.
Artykuł zawiera analizę językowo-stylistyczną i funkcjonalną blisko 200 komplementów Sienkiewicza dedykowanych najbliższym członkom rodziny. Badania pokazały, że komplementowanie, choć niezbyt częste, jest ważnym dla konwersacji listowej aktem grzeczności językowej. Podstawową funkcją komplementów było uprzyjemnianie relacji rodzinnych i chęć okazania bliskim pozytywnych uczuć. Sienkiewiczowskie komplementy najczęściej mają rozbudowaną postać i charakteryzują się zróżnicowaniem warstwy leksykalnej oraz dużymi walorami artystycznymi.

Kształt językowy listów zależy od roli, w jaką wciela się pisarz, przesyłając listy żonie. Gdy pisze z dalekich Niemiec, Szwajcarii, Francji jest podróżnikiem, który pragnie ukochanej przybliżyć widoki i wrażenia, z nadzieją na wspólne ponowne odwiedziny cudownych, nieznanych miejsc. Gdy odpoczywa w Nałęczowie, weryfikuje lub uzupełnia znane fakty, zdarzenia, krajobrazy, opowiada o nowych znajomych, relacjonuje upływające leniwie dni, rejestrując nawet najdrobniejsze szczegóły. Listy pisane z pokoju obok są żartem językowym, ćwiczeniem dla niewprawnej dłoni uderzającej w klawisze maszyny do pisania. Opisane dzieła epistolograficzne są najlepszą ilustracją twierdzenia Stefanii Skwarczyńskiej, że list „to zjawisko związane najmocniej u swojej genezy nie tylko z osobą twórcy-autora, ale i z osobą adresata, który urasta przez swój niemy współudział do godności współautora”.
The linguistic shape of the letters depends on the role that the writer plays when writing them to his wife. When he writes from distant Germany, Switzerland, and France, he is a traveler who wants to bring his beloved closer to his views and impressions, hoping to visit wonderful, unknown places together. When he rests in Nałęczów, he verifies or supplements known facts, events, landscapes, talks about new acquaintances, describes the lazily passing days recording even the smallest details. The letters written from the room next door are a language joke, an exercise for a hand hitting the keys of a typewriter. The epistolographic works described above are the best illustration of Stefania Skwarczyńska’s claim that the letter “is a phenomenon in its genesis most strongly associated not only with the person of the author, but also with the person of the addressee who, through his silent participation, grows to the dignity of a co-author”.

The letters sent to Herling-Grudziński by Zolla are published here for the first time. The literary relation between the two writers and intellectualists can also be traced in Zolla’s review of Herling-Grudziński’s volume of short stories Pale d’altare, translated into Italian and published in Italy, as well as in Herling’s-Grudziński review of Zolla’s novel Cecilia o la disattenzione.

Zygmunt Haupt’s preserved correspondence with the editors of Tematy (Paweł Mayewski and Jan Kempka) from the years 1962-1970 consists of seventeen letters. During that time, Haupt published in the quarterly from New York his translations of three poems by Robert Frost and one by Robert Lowell, as well as one short story of his own. This correspondence, although modest in volume, is an interesting testimony of Haupt’s collaboration with an important émigré journal. It also presents the writer as someone interested in the current literary life, trying his hand as a translator of American poetry.

The international research on letters and the epistolary culture is constantly growing, but there are still many unchartered territories. This also applies to the letters of the German author Georg Büchner. For considering to which extend these letters contain conventional or innovative/critical contents, it is important to take into consideration the contents as well as the form of the letter. Two examples will be given: (1) Descriptions of landscapes are highly conventional in (travel-) letters of the 18th/19th century, so here the significance of idyllic landscapes and sublime mountains in literature, arts, and culture is described in order to highlight the hidden political as well as individual message of his letter to his fiancé. (2) Even more conventional is the rhetoric of letter writing in the 19th century. It is therefore necessary to consider the information which is given by the choice of paper and ink and by the topology of the letters, i.e. the distribution of text and ‘empty rooms’ on the paper. We find the letters conventional to a high degree but there are also breaches of the conventions in both fields which shed some new light on the epistolography of a political author.

The aim of this article is to analyze the collection of letters between Wiktor Woroszylski and the writers: Jerzy Stempowski, Jerzy Giedroyc and Zbigniew Żakiewicz. It is based on two volumes of Woroszylski’s letters, published in 2020. The paper reveals a letter as genre, which can be read as an evidence of a writer’s life, a historical document, as well as a commentary on a legacy. The first three parts of the text include an analysis of the collection of letters. It traces the characteristics of the relationships between the correspondents and the main subjects of the conversations along with the crucial writing strategies. The last part covers a wider reflection on the epistolographic work of Woroszylski. Firstly, the key features of the letter as a genre are considered, i.e. its performativity, dialogicality (connected with the relation between “you” and “I”) and at the same time conversion between the personal and textual self. Secondly, the main issue of the paper reveals Woroszylski as an author, a man, a correspondent and an activist but also shows how he manifests himself in the letters. The main purpose is to present Woroszylski as a subject of epistolary writing. It means that he has to be considered as a real person at a specific point in life as well as in the instance related to the situation of the text. It is related to the author’s self-creation in two meanings of this word: self-presentation and self-conceptualization. Nevertheless, the image of Woroszylski remains internally consistent and, furthermore, it is compatible with his biographical and creative portrait. To conclude it must be admitted that his epistolography should be examined among the writer’s other works, because, as a genre, letters refer to the real world and require both textual and non-textual references

Sources of capital to finance companies in the SME sector is one of the basic conditions for the functioning and development of enterprises, especially in the early phase of their development. Increasingly popular is the use of capital market instruments, Private Equity, Venture Capital, Business Angels or Mezzanine. Funding of this kind can finance risky investments in return for a higher expected rate of return on capital. Access to financial resources and the conditions under which entrepreneurs can use them can determine the introduction of new technology, new products and services, expand distribution channels, implement changes that may lead to the growth in competitiveness and above all, innovation, thus the growth of the company. The paper presents results of statistical analysis of the venture capital and private equity funds investment strategies in selected countries. As a result investment profiles are created.

Light-verb constructions (Helbig 1977) are complex multi-word units that occur in almost every language and language variety. They are also definied as an integral part of the specialized languages and thus also of the business correspondence. The aim of the article is to show how the light verb constructions can cause linguistic politeness. We show that any choice correspondence which satisfies the weak Pareto criterion and the Majority property must violate the no-spoiler condition. Subsequently we strengthen the weak Pareto criterion. We show that if the number of criteria or individuals or states of nature is odd, then there is no choice correspondence which satisfies this strengthened version of weak Pareto criteria, Majority property and no-loser spoiler condition. However if the number of criteria/individuals/states of nature is even, we need two more properties to ensure the impossibility result. The first of these two properties is top neutrality. The second property is top anonymity.

Alfred Tarski frequently declared that his semantic definition of truth was inspired by Aristotle’s views. The present paper discusses this issue in the context of Marian Wesoły’s criticism of the thesis that there is an affinity between Tarski’s views and those of Aristotle. The article concludes with an inquiry into whether Aristotle’s definition of truthfulness can be identified with the correspondence theory of truth.

Scientific networks played an important role in the construction of Belgian prehistory. Among the emblematic figures of the European prehistoric scene was Louis Laurent Gabriel de Mortillet. In the years that followed his return from exile, the relations which the French prehistorian wove with the Belgian intelligentsia developed continuously. It reached its climax during the organization of the Congrès d’Anthropologie et d’Archéologie préhistoriques held in Brussels in 1872. Indeed, the latter placed Belgian prehistoric researches at the front of international science. Afterward the relations of Gabriel de Mortillet with Belgium continued on a permanent basis. In 1891, during his trip to Belgium with his students of the École d’Anthropologie de Paris, he met a large part of the Belgian prehistorians. Therefore, this article aims to seek the construction of Gabriel de Mortillet’s Belgian network and its impact on the young prehistoric science of Belgium

Opis:
In this paper the use of correspondence analysis for interpretation of the Delphi survey results was described. The analysis is based on the data obtained through the double-round Delphi survey carried out within the project ‘Mazovia Economic Information Center’. Analyses were conducted on issues related to the on the economic growth of the Mazovia region. The results obtained within the study indicate a noticeable relationship between the location and size of the company headquarters and the assessment of the significance and likelihood of execution of the selected Delphi theses.

The article analyses the phenomena occurring in epistolary, namely the exchange of letters. The newly published correspondence of Jerzy Lisowski with Anna and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, during a very specific period, when, just after the war, the imposed socialist-realist regime was taking shape, will serve as an example. However, the practices connected with disciplining public order in Poland are not the subject of the article, but people with completely different aesthetic desires. Politics in this correspondence gives way to the plan of, for example, fascination with Romance studies and the achievements of Western culture, which not only united the authors of the epistolary dialogue, but also significantly shaped it for the rest of their lives. This is particularly important if one looks at the professions of both participants in the correspondence. The author of the article takes as a paradigm elements of Michel Foucault’s claims from the collection of lectures entitled Hermeneutics of the Subject from the College de France from the turn of 1981/1982. The correspondence is analysed in terms of claims related to the practices of the self, the exchange of letters between friends in the age of antiquity, and parrhesia. References to fragments of an elementary work on epistolography, namely Theory of a Letter [Teoria listu] by Stefania Skwarczyńska, are also an important element. One of the inspirations for writing the article was also New Theory of a Letter [Nowa teoria listu] by Anita Całek, who also proposes to look at the correspondence through the prism of the theorems of Foucault and Skwarczyńska. The aim of the article was to present not only the essential features of a letter in the context of the formation of interpersonal relations, but also the maturation of personality and to understand to what extent letters may become a testimony of rich autobiographical narratives.

The article concerns the correspondence contacts of Poles from Poland under partition and from newly regained independence in 1918 with the outstanding Danish philosopher Harald Høffding. They are basically about getting in touch with science and thought in the West as soon as possible. As a result, his most important works were translated in Poland in a relatively short time. In his research, Høffding dealt with e.g. the problem of the relationship between the individual and the multiplicity, and the struggle to create harmony between the conflicting tendencies. On the Polish side, philosophers such as Wincenty Lutosławski or Czesław Znamierowski, as well as others, including the writer Henryk Sienkiewicz and Cardinal Mieczysław Ledóchowski, were interested.

This article attempts to determine the relative chronology of the Kietrz cemetery of the Lusatian culture proceeding from the stylistic development of forms and ornamentation of vessels coming from selected pottery inventories. The co-occurrence matrix of forms and ornaments, developed from the sources described above, was examined using correspondence analysis. Graphic representation of the results forms a quite distinct arc-shaped layout in the plot of two principal axes. Correspondence analysis was also conducted for the identified types of decoration. The results, transposed into a two-dimensional diagram, show a different, not arch-like distribution. Objects and variables form two separate clusters. Detailed analysis of the two diagrams allowed for many valuable conclusions: (1) phases of vessel form development are polythetic assemblages, which means that they are formed by specific combinations of attributes or their frequencies rather than by strictly defined sets of phase-unique attributes; (2) in the development of pottery forms, one can observe a continuous evolution between phases BrC2 and HaC, i. e. in the period spanning nearly 800 years (ca 1380–600 BC). This confirms earlier conclusions, based on planigraphy data, concerning the uninterrupted functioning of the cemetery; (3) development of pottery decoration followed a different pattern – a “revolutionary” change in HaA was followed by a continuous development until the end of early Hallstatt period, when a regression in pottery ornamentation probably took place; (4) there is some discrepancy between the present results and M.Gedl’s chronology with respect to the older phases of vessel form and decoration development (among other things, the present results suggest dating the appearance of bossed decoration as early as BrC2).

Family roles clearly affected the information people shared in their correspondence: things parents would not tell children, language children would not use with parents, and so on. Likewise, in cases of dictatorship or wartime, situations where the correspondents anticipated censorship, letter writers shaped their texts with this in mind. The Hine Collection illuminates how individual, generational, gender, and ethnic concerns coalesced and sometimes collided. Through the writings of the Hasterlik family, a bourgeois Viennese family of Jewish roots, whose members fled to various locations around the time of the Anschluss, it explores self-censorship based on internal as well as external motives.

Improvisation through the perspective of correspondence between the arts, that is on the romantic beliefs The article is devoted to the phenomenon of improvisation which is a characteristic aesthetic feature of the Romantic culture. Many nineteenth century artists regarded it as an embodiment of the issues that were of key importance for their period – among them, one finds the concept of genius or correspondence between the arts. On a few examples taken from the works of Chopin, Mickiewicz and Orłowski, the author reveals both the ways and the conditionings of the reception of the improvisory works, as well as the relations between the Romantic myth of improvisation and its artistic practice.

The aim of the article is to identify unique image attributes of Poznań, Wrocław and Bratislava. It was made using the analysis of opinions posted on the English-language TripAdvisor website (‘Things to do…’ category for three cities). 76 most-emerging words-attributes were extracted from 29,383 reviews with the text mining procedure. These words differentiate the examined cities among themselves. Analysis of the correspondence revealed unique image attributes for each city. In addition, sentiment analysis was carried out, which showed differences in the affective dimension of the images between the cities.

Correspondence gives us some information about individual accidents or some of occurring phenomena. It allows us to take a look at the events through the eyes of its participants. This gives us the chance to analyze the attitude of people, who wrote the letters, to reality. It is therefore a valuable addition to information collected from other sources. Letters of Paweł Tetera (Pavlo Teteria) are example of such a situation. Letters presented below cover three important moments in the life of this man, and significant in the history of the Cossacks - the decline of the rule of Jerzy Chmielnicki (Yurii Khmelnytsky) in 1662, the expedition of Jan Kazimierz (King John II Casimir) to Moscow and the moment of leaving Ukraine by Tetera (Teteria) in June 1665.

The advent of society with its built in idea of progress by collective effort has led to tremendous human growth and development. Our today is more of our planned yesterday rather than by accident of nature. In spite of the vast unknown future before us, our today is largely as planned yesterday. To this extent we can say we know tomorrow taken as our planned and determined-to-achieve future. We know when to guess and make predictions of the future. We also know what we want our future to be and how to work towards realizing it. As humans we keep learning and broadening our horizons. Though today is to a large extent as we planned of it yesterday, we will still find room for improvement. This should not be taken to mean that we did not know today as planned from yesterday. It is human to want something better. So we have knowledge of our planned and determined-to-achieve future events in so far as we do not have at the moment any reason to think otherwise.

In the article the question of constructing an image through epistolography is discussed based on the examples of Józef Pilch — a bibliophile and historian amateur from Ustroń in Cieszyn Silesia. The volume of his correspondence was published on the occasion of 25th anniversary of his death in 2020. The authoress proves that his portrait is doubly mediated — firstly, in the letters received by the article’s hero, secondly, in the idea of the editor who chose to emphasize the unusual side to Pilch’s personality — and she ruminates over whether the editor’s idea was well-founded. She considers relations between self-creation (self-presentation) and authenticity in order to point out that the recipient’s authority at last decides about the sender’s portrait. Especially when — like in the case of the analyzed correspondence — one deals with a relational subject and the dominance of forming and sustaining bonds between people on other functions of epistolography. It turns out to be crucial in the context of Pilch’s image, because he sometimes created it by means of other people’s phrases and autobiographical patterns, and notably because it was verified by the others — not only in their answers for letters, but first of all during meetings and direct communication with the sender. Finally the authoress considers several aspects of Pilch’s creation of his own archive — on the basis of which the volume’s editor built the image of the self-taught humanist from Ustroń.

Can correspondence from the 19th century have historical value? By specifying the thematic scope and quotations from letters exchanged between Józef Ignacy Kraszewski and Karol Estreicher for the years 1867–1886, I try to prove that this collection can be the subject of biographical, historical, bibliological and social communication research.

The article focuses on the consumption of goods used by consumers of different generations from 3 different countries: Albania, Poland and Portugal. The aim of the analysis was to identify respondents‘ indications concerning: (1) knowledge of the definition of the circular economy, (2) declared by respondents places of purchase of used products and (3) type of purchased products used by respondents. The analysis was conducted among 495 respondents from Albania, Poland and Portugal representing three generations (X, Y, Z). Correspondence analysis was used for statistical data analysis. Statistically significant differences in knowledge of the definition of the circular economy were shown between respondents from Albania, Polish and Portugal. It was also found that respondents‘ preferences regarding the place of purchase of second-hand goods are differentiated (at a statistically significant level) by nationality and year of birth (generation). The obtained results open the possibility of further research aimed at identifying different behaviors among these groups of consumers. The presented work, both in the cognitive and application part, can be a source of knowledge and popularization of research, as well as a source of inspiration for in-depth reflection and scientific discussion. The analyses presented in the publication may complement the existing research in the field of circular economy. Extending the survey to other EU countries can help define a strategy for policymakers, manufacturers and retailers to make greater use of circular economy solutions, while maintaining the viability of their operations.

The aim of the article is to characterise the spelling errors observed in Polish postcard messages. The analysis of the source literature shows that so far little attention has been paid to errors occurring in unsupervised communication. For this reason, nearly 700 errors from around 3,000 texts sent via postcards in the second half of the 20th century were examined. The author discusses individual errors and presents their typology, concluding that the most common mistakes concern the conventional and historical principles of Polish spelling. This conclusion to a large extent confirms the results of previousresearch on the spelling practice of Polish speakers and the so-called “difficult words”.

The paper presents the usage of multidimensional correspondence analysis to estimation the role of fibre and medicinal plants in farms plant production in the context of the determinants influencing the choice of these plants for crop rotation scheme. The source of data were the survey questionnaires collected among the farmers running agricultural activity in the period 2011-2012 in the Wielkopolska region. The correspondence analysis enabled to indicate relations a selected categorical variable and such categories as age, sex, education, number of person per household, farm area and farm income in 2010 and 2011.

Opis:
The work relates to changes of the eggs prices in European Union member states since 2004 to 2010. The analysis is based on annually, monthly and weekly average eggs prices. Correspondence analysis is applied to analyze the direction and structure of the changes with reference to all considered states. The unexpected and violent price changes are captured with respect to particular states. Moreover in the reference to chosen states, the model of structural time series analysis is applied to show the price changes in a more detail.

Flaubert undeniably represents a fascinating case with regard to stereotyping, especially if one considers not only his masterpiece, Madame Bovary, but also his last volume, left unfinished in perhaps a symbolic way, Bouvard et Pécuchet, and the collections of clichés included in his Dictionnaire des idées reçues and Le Sottisier. What is prosaic is important for the novelist. Moreover, in his Correspondence we find a real and fascinating interest in the topic of the cliché. A key sentence concerning what is commonplace suggestively describes Charles Bovary’s conversation: “Charles’ conversation was as flat as a pavement, and people’s ideas paraded on it in their ordinary outfit, without vibrating with emotion, with laughter or with daydreaming” (my translation). Essentially, our aim is to dwell on language and gesture stereotypes as presented in some of Flaubert’s novels as well as in the short story Un cœur simple (A Simple Heart) and even in his travel notes. Furthermore, through the agency of Jean-Paul Sartre’s ample work L’Idiot de la famille (The Family Idiot), it is our aim to look into the language mechanisms which lead to mal du siècle in Flaubert’s view, namely the stupidity of wanting a conclusion and the circulation of received ideas.

Rodzina książąt Odescalchi oraz spokrewniony z nią Zygmunt Krasiński znaleźli się w centrum wydarzeń polityczno-społecznych, mających miejsce w Rzymie w latach 1847–1848. Doświadczenia Wiosny Ludów, ze szczególną intensywnością przeżywane w Wiecznym Mieście, znajdują swe odzwierciedlenie w korespondencji zarówno autora Irydiona, jak i Zofii Branickiej oraz jej małżonka Livio Odescalchi, którzy stają się bezpośrednio zaangażowani, czy to na płaszczyźnie politycznej czy emocjonalnej, w ten wielki ruch historyczny, który budzi nadzieje, ale i uzasadnione obawy. Listowe dyskusje Krasińskiego, „odbywane na najwyższym diapazonie intelektualnym i emocjonalnym, pośród zawziętych sporów filozoficznych, światopoglądowych, religijnych”, obok listów książąt Odescalchi konstytuują jedyną w swoim rodzaju mozaikę faktów, emocji i konkretnych wydarzeń, w których pojawiają się wybitne osobowości tamtego czasu.
The princely Odescalchi family was at the center of political and social events of 1847–1848 in Rome, in the midst of the revolutionary convulsions that shook the whole of Europe. Such events are mirrored in the correspondence of Zygmunt Krasiński and the Odescalchi-Branicka couple. Zofia and Livio come across as active figure, deeply involved in the action both on the political level and in the personal emotional sphere. Together with their correspondence, Krasiński’s letters represent a complex canvas of facts and imagination, emotions and events on the ground, depicting many of the most important figures and developments of those times.

The article is devoted to the Hungarian revolution in 1956, witnessed and described by Wiktor Woroszylski in his Hungarian diary . His report from the fighting Budapest is as important as the comments added in 1976, 1981, 1986, and 1989, the milestones of the Polish way to freedom, described by one of its participants. In the comments, Woroszylski creates a vision of “history incessant in its movement”, marked by hope and disappointment. The author points out to similarities and relationships between freedom uprisings in various Soviet-dominated countries of Central Europe.

Upon the decisions of the peace treaty concluding the Thirteen Years’ War between the German Order and the Kingdom of Poland supported by the Prussian estates, the monastic rule in Prussia was divided into two separate, if connected with each other, parts: Royal Prussia and Monastic Prussia. The article discusses economic relations – long distance trade, retail, the flow of people and capital between the biggest cities – Gdańsk and Königsberg in the years 1466–1525. In the older historiography there appeared information indicating that economic relations between Royal Prussia and Monastic Prussia were breached after the division of the Monastic State. Such information resulted from the insufficient database – the authors concentrated on the sources which addressed the problem in quantitative terms. On the basis of the analysis of the correspondence and scattered entries in the city books it is possible to establish that intensive trade and financial contacts between the biggest ports of Prussia were maintained. Trade relations concentrated on the exchange between Western Europe and Lithuania, where both cities played a major role. What prevailed was the export of salt, and at the beginning of the 16th century also the export of grain from Żuławy [Werder] to Königsberg. Wood, ash and hop played a major role in the import to the West. The exchange of goods invariably entailed the exchange of money and people. Inhabitants of Gdańsk and Königsberg lent money to each other and purchased property. The exchange of people was also visible; it referred mainly to journeymen and peddlers. The text shows that apart from customs books it is necessary to examine the correspondence while analyzing trade contacts of Gdańsk.

In the remaining memoirs and correspondence of Ignacy Domeyko the references to his family home have an important place. In his memoirs, describing the times of the Philomaths, he presents the image of Vilnius and its University, the organizational activity among students and common wandering around in Vilnius. Reporting the outbreak of the November Uprising he describes the atmosphere prevailed in Lithuania at that time. The subject of home land can be found in letters to friends and relatives – they often contain comparisons with the life in Chile. This proves how deeply inside him were the images of places of his childhood and youth.

The circumstances of writing this article was given in the brief introduction: the hundreth anniversary of the priestly ordination of Father Antoni Jagłowski and his fortieh anniversary of his death (1891–1914–1974). This article is divided into three short sections:The correspondents, The collection of the correspondence in ABMO: The content of the correspondence, The conclusion. The correspondents were presented to readers sequentially: Father Antoni Jagłowski and Missionary Benedictine Sisters after 1945 in Diocese of Warmia. Next the correspondence was disscused in general and the circumstances in which it was created with Missionary Benedictine Sisters and its two collections of the correspondence preserved in ABMO. Next the content of the correspondence was presented.There were presented current affairs of the Assembly of Missionary Benedictine Sisters after their expulsion from the eastern borderlands of the Second Polish Republic and their arrival on the nothern lands recovered.Next the biographical topic of father A. Jagłowski as their chaplain was presented. In the conclusion the efforts to develop the structures of Assembly by Father A. Jagłowski were presented particulary in Diocese of Warmia.The gratitude of Missionary Benedictine Sisters was emphasized. It was announced publication of the extensive monography of Father Antoni Jagłowski.

Opis:
Adolf Dygasiński methodically developed writing meticulous aphorisms. He cherished the intention to write a vast theoretical study on literature, author, reader and the book. The sketched adages were to help him as central themes for particular chapters. Although the substantial part of this collection is characterized by stylistic negligence (the indicator of a sketch) there exists the need for a thorough inspection of the senses of aphorisms, as they include prudent and maturely thought over concepts that show the writer’s own project, which has not been expressed anywhere else by a systemic lecture and concerned the significance of literariness. Together with journalistic texts and private letters, aphorisms constituted the testimony of Dygasiński’s creative awareness.

Opis:
Private equity and venture capital (PE/VC) funding is the provision of equity capital by financial investors to non-quoted companies with high growth potential. It has a particular emphasis on entrepreneurial activities rather than on mature businesses. PE/VC investors differ on several dimensions including: investment targets, screening evaluation methods, governance mechanisms, and objectives. The paper is a conti nuati on of the discussion that concerns investment strategies of PE/VC funds. While studying the PE/VC market it is important to analyze the origin and structure of capital. The authors assumed that different types of investors have different investment strategies. Our research is an attempt to answer the following research question: whether the investor type, on the European PE/VC market, has an impact on the selection of industries. The paper presents results of statistical analysis of venture capital and private equity funds investment strategies in selected countries.

Maria Butrymówna was born on February 26, 1875 in Jodkan. Her father was Nicodemus Butrym of the Topór family, and her mother Teresa de domo Wiszniewska of the Prussians from Żybortan. She was interested in ethnography: she wrote down Lithuanian songs and prose which she then published in ethnographic journals. However, her true passion was archaeology: discovering and exploring archaeological sites. As an amateur, however, she needed consultation and advice, especially concerning excavation methodology. At the end of the 19th century, E. Majewski was the authority in archeology and he became her adviser. M. Butrymówna and E. Majewski corresponded with each other (the correspondence kept in PMA covers the years 1899-1902), and they also knew each other personally. E. Majewski published M. Butrymówna’s ethnographic notes in the pages of „Wisła” and the results of her archaeological research in „Światowit”. Archaeological finds acquired by M. Butrymówna during the course of her own research or in the form of donations resulted in a collection. Part of the collection was handed over to the Erazm Majewski Museum and the rest to the Museum of the Society of Friends of the Sciences in Vilnius.

The aim of this work is to study the structure of information and telecommunications technologies (ICT) usage in Polish enterprises in 2015. In this paper the overrepresentation maps were considered as a tool of data mining. These maps are crated as the results of GCA algorithm. The analysis of data about ICT in Polish enterprises were shown as an example of GCA application. The advantage of the method is the visualization possibility and legibility of the obtained maps. In this article we studied the level of usage of ICT in individual voivodeships, the expenditures for various sectors of ICT for small, medium-size and big enterprises.

“Lies”, “Dirty Madness”, “Daylight Robbery”: How Henryk Sienkiewicz Verbalised Negative Judgments and Emotions (Based on Private Correspondence)This article is part of a stream of research on the language and style of private correspondence of Henryk Sienkiewicz. The article contains analysis of expressive lexis that the writer used to verbalise his negative judgments and feelings, which is complex, rich and diverse in terms of both form and meaning. The lexical material which relates to the second – unsuccessful – marriage of Sienkiewicz to Maria Wołodkowiczówna comes from selected letters by the writer addressed to his sister-in-law – Jadwiga Janczewska neé Szetkiewicz. The selected lexis encompasses, for example, words with explicit, implicit and evaluative expression, belonging to different categories of meaning. „Kłamstwa”, „brudne szaleństwo”, „rozbój na równej drodze”, czyli jak Sienkiewicz werbalizował negatywne oceny i emocje (na podstawie korespondencji prywatnej)Artykuł wpisuje się w nurt badań nad językiem i stylem korespondencji prywatnej Henryka Sienkiewicza. Analizie poddano złożoną, bogatą i zróżnicowaną pod względem formy i znaczenia warstwę leksyki nacechowanej ekspresywnie, którą pisarz wykorzystywał do werbalizacji swoich negatywnych ocen i uczuć. Materiał leksykalny pochodzi z korpusu listów adresowanych do szwagierki – Jadwigi z Szetkiewiczów Janczewskiej, przedstawiających wydarzenia związane z drugim – nieudanym – małżeństwem Sienkiewicza z Marią Wołodkowiczówną. Wśród zebranej leksyki znalazły się np. wyrazy o ekspresji eksplicytnej i implicytnej, wartościującej, przynależnej do różnych kategorii znaczeniowych.

The article is concerned with selected letters of Polish and Lithuanian magnates that include information on sickness, physicians and advice on cures and a healthy lifestyle. The letters were written by the members of Radziwiłł family: Mikołaj Krzysztof Sierotka, Krzysztof, Janusz and the wives and daughters from the Biržai branch, as well as Krzysztof Opaliński, Krzysztof Dorohostajski and Lew Sapieha. The article takes into account the personal remarks about the health of the writer and their immediate family, their opinions about health resorts and epidemics. Some letters include detailed descriptions of births and deaths. The analysed fragments of correspondence were found in the unknown manuscripts, which allows for the broadening of knowledge about the history of medicine and social culture.

Głównym celem artykułu jest przedstawienie historii cennego rękopisu przechowywanego w zbiorach Biblioteki Kórnickiej – Autografu Kościuszki. Rękopis ten, napisany przez Tadeusza Kościuszkę w połowie 1793 roku, zawiera Opis kampanii r. 1792, odbytej przeciw Rosji. Po analizie rękopisu oraz omówieniu wszystkich ośmiu edycji jego tekstu autor artykułu najpierw przedstawił jego historię do czasu śmierci Józefa Dobka Dzierzkowskiego ze Lwowa (1830). Następnie ukazał krótką historię znajomości Tytusa Działyńskiego z Wiktorem Baworowskim, zawartą w ich wzajemnej korespondencji, która zdradza nam dalsze skomplikowane losy Autografu Kościuszki – kto był jego kolejnym właścicielem i w jakich okolicznościach trafi ł on do zbiorów Biblioteki Kórnickiej. Na koniec omówione zostały wszystkie znane z literatury kopie tego rękopisu. W aneksie autor opublikował ww. korespondencję Działyńskiego z Baworowskim.
This paper aims to present the history of a precious manuscript from the collections of the Kórnik Library – Autograf Kościuszki. The manuscript, written by Tadeusz Kościuszko in mid-1793, contains Opis kampanii r. 1792 – a description of a campaign launched against Russia. Having analysed the manuscript and discussed all the eight editions of its text, the author of the article presents its history up until the death of Józef Dobek Dzierzkowski from Lviv (1830). He subsequently discusses a brief history of Tytus Działyński’s acquaintance with Wiktor Baworowski, as contained in their mutual correspondence, which discloses the further complex fate of Autograf Kościuszki – information on its subsequent owner and the circumstances in which it found its way into the collections of the Kórnik Library. Finally, all the copies of the manuscript known from literature are discussed. In the Annex, the author publishes inter alia the abovementioned correspondence between Działyński and Baworowski
