    This study examines the causal links between improvements in economic freedom and changes in GDP per capita of new EU members in transition in the period 2000-2009. The empirical results suggest significant causality running from changes in monetary and fiscal freedom, trade openness, regulation of credit, labour, and business, legal structure and security of property rights, and access to sound money to movements in GDP per capita, especially in less and moderately developed CEE transition countries. Moreover, we find evidence that improvements in economic freedom are one of the main factors stimulating the convergence of these economies towards rich EU members. The evidence of causality in the opposite direction is much weaker.

    This paper examines the role of export diversification for economic growth in CEE transition economies. The results prove that before the outbreak of 2008 financial crisis export specialization rather than diversification was an important growth factor, especially in those countries which followed more specialized export patterns. However, after the outbreak of the crisis the direction of this causal link changed essentially. All three main aspects of export diversification turned out to play a significant role in reducing the growth slowdown effects of the 2008 financial crisis.

    We suggest original modifications and extensions of the recently presented methodological developments in ex-post accounting framework in global value chains in order to obtain empirical results both for the analyzed group of ten CEE economies as well as at a country-and-sectorspecific level. The empirical results confirm that the role of the selected CEE economies in transition in creating value added with respect to the total value added in the European Union in the GVC framework was biggest in the cases of agriculture-, wood-products-, metal-production, and travel-and-tourism-related sectors. We also found that, after two decades of transition, the measures of productivity in the examined economies in 2009 were still much lower as compared to the EU average for most of the sectors. Moreover, in the transition period, these indexes were increasing, especially after EU accession. In contrary, after two decades of transition, the measures of capital efficiency in the ten CEE economies in 2009 were comparable to the EU average for most of the sectors. Moreover, during this period, the growth rates of these indexes were, in general, positive. However, their growth rates dropped after EU accession.

    Research background: The changes that took place in the late twentieth century led to the transformation of the political system in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). As a result, there has been an increase in the competitiveness of some of the economies among the CEE states. Due to different priorities and goals, these countries are also characterized by different levels in socio-economic development. Purpose of the article: The aim of the article is to identify the determinants affecting the competitiveness among the selected CEE countries. Methods: Based on Eurostat data, a set of determinants affecting competitiveness was established. A number of determinants have been eliminated in relation to the variation coefficient. At the same time, a classification of the level of competitiveness among the CEE countries has been made by using the Perkal method. The analysis used 14 selected indicators, 10 of which are considered as stimulating, and 4 as deteriorating the competitiveness of national economies. The result led to obtaining a synthetic level indicator of potential of the CEE countries. Findings & Value added: Following the findings of the conducted analysis, the highest economic competitiveness exists in Estonia and in the Czech Republic, while the lowest was found in Romania and Bulgaria. The results of the evaluation obtained with the Perkal method concerning the competitiveness of the CEE countries that belong to the EU are largely consistent with those presented in different global competitiveness rankings. However, the method applied in this article seems much simpler and less time-consuming, allowing at the same time an optimal choice of analytical determinants. The selected linear Pearson correlation?s coefficient confirmed that there is a strong positive relationship between the designated values of the synthetic indicator of competitiveness and the GDP per capita. This confirms the validity of test method used.

    Research background: A strong industrial base is essential for achieving long-term sustainable economic growth and export competitiveness. In that sense, manufacturing remains a significant contributor to exports in the CEE countries. How-ever, its role and its influence vary between CEE economies and change over time. Purpose of the article: The main objective of this paper is to compare the determinants of the international competitiveness, measured by the net exports of the manufacturing sectors in the Czech and Polish economies, by using the database of 13 manufacturing sub-sectors in 1995-2011. The authors research the question of how much foreign and domestic demand, the level of labour costs, the level of sector innovation intensity, the level of sector openness to foreign markets as well as sectoral labour productivity influence the changes in trade balance. Methods: Our approach is based on employing an error correction model and SUR model to disaggregated sectoral manufacturing data. Findings & Value added: The results of the analysis conducted show substantial differences in the roles particular variables play in explaining the net exports in individual sectors. For the majority of Polish and Czech manufacturing sub-sectors, generation of positive trade balance is determined by relative demand growth. An increasing labour productivity influences heavily a positive trade balance of Polish goods in majority of sub-sectors, however, a key factor in Czech sub-sectors is decreasing unit labour costs. The results of the analysis indicate mostly a greater impact of the researched factors on net exports in long rather than short term and the better capacity of the Czech economy to correct deviations from the equilibrium.

    Zagraniczne spółki zależne (filie zagraniczne) angażują się w dwa rodzaje współpracy: współpracę wewnętrzną (korporacyjną: z firmą matką oraz innymi filiami córkami) i współpracę zewnętrzną (międzyorganizacyjną). Opierając się na koncepcji „dualnego zakorzenienia”, niniejszy artykuł proponuje model wyjaśniający rolę relacji wewnętrznych i zewnętrznych w budowaniu przewagi konkurencyjnej wynikającej z innowacji. W opracowaniu opisano wyniki analizy ścieżek, wykonanej przy wykorzystaniu danych z kwestionariusza Community Innovation Survey 2010–2012 na próbie przedsiębiorstw – członków grup kapitałowych z 10 państw UE, w większości krajów Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej. Wyniki pokazują pozytywny wpływ podwójnego zakorzenienia na innowacyjność filii zagranicznych, prowadzącego do budowania przewagi konkurencyjnej opartej zarówno na kosztach, jak również wyróżnianiu się. Wiedza pozyskiwana z zewnątrz jest mediatorem związku między relacjami wewnątrz korporacji a budowaną przewagą konkurencyjną. Relacje zewnętrzne i wewnętrzne nie wykluczają się nawzajem, wręcz przeciwnie – jeśli występują jednocześnie, wzmacnia to ich wpływ na innowacyjność. Integracja wewnętrzna odgrywa decydującą rolę w budowaniu przewagi konkurencyjnej wynikającej z innowacji nakierowanej na obniżanie kosztów, podczas gdy relacje zewnętrzne mają większy wpływ na przewagę konkurencyjną wynikającą z różnicowania. Kierownictwo przedsiębiorstw powinno więc promować oba typy relacji, uwzględniając ich odrębne role w procesie budowania przewagi konkurencyjnej.
    The foreign subsidiaries of multinational enterprises are involved in two types of networks: an internal (corporate) network within the company including the headquarters and sister subsidiaries, and an external (inter-organizational) network of cooperating partners. Based on the concept of “dual embeddedness,” this paper proposes a model explaining the role of internal and external relationships in developing innovation-related competitive advantages. A path analysis was conducted based on data from the Community Innovation Survey’s 2010–2012 sample of enterprises – members of capital groups from 10 EU member states, mostly CEE (post-transition countries). The results show the positive influence of dual embeddedness on subsidiaries’ innovation, leading to competitive advantages based on cost and on differentiation. A mediating role for external knowledge in the link of internal integration and competitive advantage is posited. External and internal relationships are not mutually exclusive; on the contrary, together they reinforce each other’s impact on innovation performance. Internal integration plays a decisive role in building innovation-related competitive advantages based on cost, whereas external relationships have stronger influence on differentiation-based advantages. Therefore, the management of such firms should promote both types of relationships, considering their distinct roles in the process of building competitive advantages.
