Contemporary angelology is primarily an apologetic response to the negation of the existence of the angelic reality by liberal Protestantism. Bulgakov’s teaching about angels, on the other hand, arose as an indispensable part of the theological system. The orthodox author defines angels as created ideas of reality. As with Plato, every thing has its own idea, so with Bulgakov it has its own angel. The angels are therefore closely related to the earthly world and are its guardians, leading the world to the realization of the meaning given to it. Angels are also closely related to God because it is their nature to be filled with divine life. Thus, they constitute “Jacob’s ladder” — the reality that connects the world with God.

The subject of the article is the analysis of the image of Kiev, presented in Mikhail Bulgakov’s feuilleton Kiev, the City. This work has rarely been the subject of in-depth analysis, despite the fact that it is one of the few texts in which the writer presents the image of his hometown. A characteristic element of the description of Kiev’s past and present is the irony. It is noticeable in the title of the feuilleton, as well as in the names of its parts. The ironic image of Soviet Kiev stands in stark contrast to the vision of the city captured in the novel The White Guard. The analysis of the techniques used by the writer in the text of Kiev, the City (e.g. the naive narrator’s mask, a combination of pompous style and colloquial speech) is carried out in order to prove that the feuilleton, in its style and ideas expressed, also shows the author’s rejection of post-revolutionary reality and his attempt to overcome the trauma of the past through laughter. The ironic image of the Soviet reality on the background of eternal spiritual values makes Kiev, the City a harbinger of the problems covered inMikhail Bulgakov’s later works.

In the spectacle, the display of biographical threads for the purpose of universal aim`s has been dispensed with. According to the author, the creator of the spectacle, while remaining faithful to the assumptions of the text, created a universal spectacle, presenting motifs of human behavior and, above all, exposing the theatricality of the text.

W niniejszym artykule podjęta została próba naszkicowania obrazu twórczości literackiej (prozatorskiej i dramaturgicznej) Michaiła Bułhakowa, wraz z jej tłem historyczno-politycznym, jako wstępu do jego własnej przygody z filmem oraz późniejszych, już pośmiertnych, ekranizacji jego dzieł – na czele z Mistrzem i Małgorzatą. Przy takim ujęciu przejście Bułhakowa od prozy (Biała Gwardia) do dramaturgii (Dni Turbinów) może się jawić jako dopiero pierwszy krok ku jego przygodzie z filmem. Wydaje się bowiem, że droga od powieści przez dramat do filmu jest znacznie łatwiejsza niż bezpośrednia droga od powieści do filmu. Zarysowane zostały tu zatem zarówno konteksty teatralne Bułhakowa, jak i konteksty muzyczne, z uwzględnieniem przedstawień operowych i musicalowych. Opisano także zwięźle autorskie scenariusze Bułhakowa do niezrealizowanych ostatecznie ekranizacji Rewizora i Martwych dusz Gogola. Została podkreślona rola przestrzeni Kijowa i Moskwy, jako dwóch z kilku najistotniejszych, obok Jerozolimy, Rzymu i Paryża, mitycznych miast pisarza. W artykule uwypuklona została kinematograficzna natura dzieł Bułhakowa. Przywołane zostają w tym filmowo-teatralnym kontekście opinie badawcze takich autorów jak – Konstanty Paustowski, Andrzej Drawicz, Marietta Czudakowa, Aleksy Warłamow, Eugeniusz Zamiatin, Miron Pietrowski, Alicja Helman, Joanna Wojnicka. Zarysowany wstępnie zostaje również urbanistyczny wymiar powieści Mistrz i Małgorzata, jako apoteozy miasta i osiągnięć cywilizacji, co także przełoży się na późniejsze ekranizacje tego arcydzieła.
This article attempts to sketch a picture of Mikhail Bulgakov’s literary works (prose and drama), together with their historical and political background, as a prelude to his own adventure with film and the later, already posthumous, screen adaptations of his works – led by The Master and Margarita. Viewed in this way, Bulgakov’s transition from prose (The White Guard) to drama (Turbine Days) may appear to be only the first step towards his adventure with film. It seems that the path from novel through drama to film is much easier than the direct path from novel to film. The theatrical contexts of Bulgakov’s works are outlined, as well as musical contexts, including opera and musicals. Bulgakov’s scripts for the screen adaptations of Gogol’s The Government Inspector and The Dead Souls, which were never made, are also briefly described. The role of the space of Kiev and Moscow is emphasized as well as two of the writer’s most significant mythical cities, along with Jerusalem, Rome and Paris. The article emphasizes the cinematic nature of Bulgakov’s works. In this film-theatrical context the research opinions of such authors as Konstantin Paustovsky, Andrzej Drawicz, Marietta Chudakova, Alexey Varlamov, Eugene Zamiatin, Miron Petrovsky, Alicja Helman and Joanna Wojnicka are recalled. The urban dimension of The Master and Margarita is outlined, as the apotheosis of the city and the achievements of civilization, which will also translate to later screen adaptations of this masterpiece.

The article deals with the problem of the stylistic of the novel by Mikhail Bulgakov TheMaster and Margarita. Literary style of the novel is often referred to satire, parody and grotesque.Nonetheless, Bulgakov’s novel can not be called a comic one, since its ideologicalessence belongs to the category of tragedy, in which catharsis goes beyond the existentialsituation of individual characters and transforms into the transcendental sphere. The styleof the novel takes on the triple model, which is subject to speech style of the characters andnarrative.The first stylistic group in the article is called high-style (statements of Woland, YeshuaHa-Nozri and Pontius Pilate), the second style of low (expressions represent by Moskovdwellers) and the third - middle style (statements of Margarita and Woland’s retinue). Thelatter category is the most sophisticated and includes all the other stylistic groups. It combinesboth of the previous style as the Margarita, Koroviev and cat Behemoth act as intermediariesbetween the two worlds (the higher world of the truth and the lower world of falsehood).

Artykuł pokazuje, że w mitologicznym podtekście dzieł Bułhakowa najważniejsze miejsce zajmują motywy słowiańskiej mitologii (zarówno w wersji pogańskiej, jak i chrześcijańskiej). Jako przykład rozważane jest funkcjonowanie dyskursu "wąż-kurczak" w powieści "Fatalne jaja", opowiadaniach i dramatach. Analiza mitologicznych aluzji znacząco wpływa na interpretację dzieł Bułhakowa i pozwala wyjaśnić strukturę jego artystycznego świata.   
Evgeny Yablokov MIKHAIL BULGAKOV AND SLAVIC MYTHOLOGY Summary The article examines the mythological subtext of Bulgakov's works. The author assumes that motifes of Slavic mythology (both in pagan and Christian versions) occupy an important place in this subtext. The functioning of the "snake-and- chicken"'s discourse in Bulgakov’s novel "Fatal Eggs", stories ("Towel with a Rooster", "The Steel Windpipe "), plays ("Zoyka's Apartment", "Flight ") is considered. The analysis of mythological allusions clarify the interpretation of the writer's works and let specify the structure of his artistic world.
Евгений Яблоков МИХАИЛ БУЛГАКОВ И СЛАВЯНСКАЯ МИФОЛОГИЯ В статье показано, что в мифологическом подтексте булгаковских произведений мотивы славянской мифологии (как в языческом, так и в христианском вариантах) занимают важнейшее место. В качестве примера рассмотрено функционирование «змеино-куриного» дискурса в повести «Роковые яйца», рассказах («Полотенце с петухом», «Стальное горло»), пьесах («Зойкина квартира», «Бег»). Анализ мифологических аллюзий существенно влияет на интерпретацию произведений Булгакова, позволяет уточнить структуру его художественного мира.

The article presents the most significant issues which are connected with the narration in the Bulgakov’s novel. The first-person narrative is construed by means of the vivid and flowery language. The author’s critical comments on the age of Louis XIV and human relationships that prevailed in the then theatres, proved to be universal and timeless. To a large extent the comments reveal the author’s own opinions on the life of theatre in the times of Stalin’s terror.
Статья представляет наиболее существенные проблемы, связанные с повествованием в романе Михаила Булгакова. Оно ведется от первого лица единственного числа живым, насыщенным художественными средствами языком. Критические замечания повествователя об эпохе Людовика XIV, господствующих тогда в театре отношениях носят универсальный и вневременной характер. В большой степени это мнение самого Булгакова о театральной жизни времен сталинского террора.

The article addresses the issue of generic and cognitive attractiveness of a monograph based on the work of Marietta Chudakova entitled, Mikhail Bulgakov: The Life and Times, which was published with a more than thirty years delay. The main purpose of the sketch is the reflection on the biography author’s research project, the methodology, the connection between the research sources and the writing strategy to which the structure of this article is devoted. The introduction of the article describes how the author realized the proposed honesty and authenticity while adopting a certain research method that is perceived ethically. The next part of the article focuses on the implemented methods which are mainly used in the fields of history and literary studies while using certain sources such as archives and witness accounts that are not accessible for modern researchers. The last part of the article concentrates on the influence of “me” as an author on the way the narrative of the biography is conducted. The analysis of the given problems allowed the results of a particular research work to be seen. It also showed how a documental biography may be still attractive to a reader despite the changes in reception.

The article aims to examine the relationship between two texts: Loveless (Нелюбовь, 2017), the latest of Andrey Zvyagintsev’s feature films, and The Heart of a Dog (Собачье сердце, 1925), one of Mikhail Bulgakov’s most popular short stories. The studies are focused on finding the parallels showing the work of cultural memory, which is understood – following Aleida Assmann’s and Astrid Erll’s findings – as the process of continuous remediation, retranscription and negotiation of essential ideas in the space of culture. Consequently, the author is not interested in treating Zvyagintsev’s text as the illustration of Bulgakov’s plot, but rather in discussing certain topics which are deposited in Russian literature and constantly reused and reinterpreted, creating the framework for communication across ‘the abyss of time’. The analogies between the selected texts are sought in the area of their structure, some thematic overlapping, the authors’ approach to the issue of the authoritarian ideology and the role of technology as well as in exploring the function of space as one of the narrative mechanisms, in particular in the context of the category of home and anti-home.

Opis:
“The Master and Margarita” is generally considered Mikhail Bulgakov’s literary masterpiece. It is a “melting pot” of literary genres, motives, themes, imagery and intertextual references. All these elements cooperate in creating a “polyphonic” novel, in Bakhtin’s sense of the word, not only when it comes to the different nature and “voice” of single characters but also with reference to the “poly-structured” construction of the text itself. The paper will illustrate the peculiarity of Bulgakov’s novel and the semiotic and semiosic character of his creation. The adjective “semiosic” derives from “semiosis” as defined, among others, by C.S. Peirce, who stresses the meaning-making “power” of some semiotic processes. The paper aims also at answering the question why this novel has been translated several times into Polish and Italian since 1967 (when the first edition of the novel was published in Western Europe). Due to the very specific construction of the plot and of the formal aspects of the novel, translators had to deal with a significant number of problems of “untranslatability” that they could solve only by using their creative potential. It was Roman Jakobson who through his linguistic analysis reached the conclusion that for the untranslatable—poetry for example—“Only creative transposition is possible”. Using creativity translators were also able to discover further interpretations of Bulgakov’s literary work and to perform a culture-formative act as their efforts offer new points of view on reality and its perception, wider knowledge of the social life not only in Soviet times but in a more universal perspective as well as new models of text and literariness. That’s why a novel like Bulgakov’s masterpiece has been translated so many times and it is still translated in the two languages selected for the purposes of this research and all over the world. And this is also the reason why it can be considered a meaning-generative and culture-formative text even if its first edition appeared in 1940.  
Powieść „Mistrz i Małgorzata” jest powszechnie uważana za arcydzieło literackie Michaiła Bułhakowa. Jest ona mieszanką gatunków literackich, motywów, tematów, obrazów i odniesień intertekstualnych. Wszystkie elementy, o których wyżej mowa współdziałają w tworzeniu powieści „polifonicznej”, w ujęciu Bachtina, nie tylko gdy chodzi o odmienny charakter i „głos” pojedynczych postaci, ale także o odniesienie do „wielopoziomowej” konstrukcji samego tekstu. Artykuł zilustruje cechy charakterystyczne powieści Bułhakowa oraz semiotyczny charakter tego utworu, w tym jego zdolność do generowania znaczeń, a więc „semiozy” zdefiniowanej m.in. przez C. S. Peirce’a jako „moc” znaczeniotwórcza niektórych procesów semiotycznych. Autorka niniejszej pracy postara się też znaleźć odpowiedzieć na pytanie, dlaczego powieść ta była wielokrotnie tłumaczona na język polski i włoski od 1967 roku, kiedy to pierwsze wydanie powieści ukazało się w Europie Zachodniej. Ze względu na bardzo specyficzną konstrukcję fabuły i formalne aspekty powieści tłumacze musieli zmierzyć się ze znaczną liczbą problemów „nieprzekładalności”, które mogli rozwiązać jedynie wykorzystując swój potencjał twórczy. Roman Jakobson omawiając kwestię nieprzekładalności stwierdził, że dla tego, co nieprzetłumaczalne – na przykład poezji – „możliwa jest tylko twórcza transpozycja”. Dzięki kreatywności tłumacze mogli także odkryć dalsze interpretacje literatury Bułhakowa, tworzyć i wykonać akt kulturotwórczy, ponieważ ich wysiłki oferują nowy punkt widzenia na rzeczywistość i jej postrzeganie, szerszą wiedzę o życiu społecznym nie tylko, gdy chodzi o czasy radzieckie, ale w bardziej uniwersalnej perspektywie. Ponadto mogli stworzyć także nowe modele tekstu i literackości. Dlatego powieść Bułhakowa była tłumaczona tak wiele razy i nadal jest tłumaczona na dwa wybrane przez autorkę artykułu języki (włoski i polski). I jest to również powód, dla którego można nadal uznać „Mistrza i Małgorzatę” za dzieło tekstotwórcze i kulturotwórcze, mimo że jego pierwsze wydanie ukazało się w 1940 roku.

The paper explores hybrid identities of main characters in chosen contemporary authors as Kafka, Dürrenmatt, Bulgakov, Dukaj, and in particular Brown. They all contribute to the posthumanist literary genre and to better comprehension of condition posthumana as a leading utopia in the age of advanced technologies. The author argues for affinities between the human and the non-human brain, far beyond the anthropocentrism and anthropodenialism controversy.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the problem of time and space as the essential factors of the world model created in The Master and Margarita, the famous novel written by Mikhail Bulgakov. As many critics has already noticed, there are three basic space dimensions in the considering work of prose – Jerusalem, Moscow and the mysterious world of Woland. As the matter of fact the core problem of research concerns the latter. The world from which Woland is coming is presented as a kind of inter-world between the other two, on the one hand, and as the objective Universe embracing them, creating in this way the unity of three dimensions, on the other hand. Moreover, in this piece of work, there has been made an attempt to recode the Woland’s world by analysing the motifs of it through the symbols and themes of gnosis.
