The goal of this article is to present relation between photography and Joseph Brodsky’s poetryon the example of the poem Мы жили в городе ...., which was translated into English by the poetand titled A Photograph.In the first part the author analyses the structure of the presented world in context of his stylizationon a photograph. While putting stress on Brodsky’s “photographic seeing” the author pays attentionto lighting, colors, geometry and fragmentary nature of the presented world.The results of bringing the meanings of the visual work of art upon the literary work are examinedin the second part of the article. The author points on such qualities of a photo-text as: disruptionof the temporal-spatial structure of the presented world which is a consequence of a priori elegiacnature of photography; questioning the fictional character of the poem and introducing metonymicmeanings on the place of metaphorical ones (as a result of the documentary character of photography);bringing in, implied by photography, notions associated with passing, death and immortality

The article presents the study of the short film Apocrypha by Andrei Zvyagintsev. The text is aimed at the interpretation of the movie in the context of the problem of memory, which is emphasised in the selected work in the explicit and implicit visual associations with the figure and poetry of Iosif Brodsky. The recognition of these characteristic elements in the structure of Zvyagintsev’s film has the influence on the perception of its meaning, leading the culturally aware recipient towards discovering its broad interpretative potential in view of the Russian literary tradition. The study is conducted using the comparative method of analysis. The core theory which constitutes the methodological foundation of the study is Astrid Erll’s concept of cultural memory expounded as intertextuality, i.e. the continuous building up of layers of texts, which are mediated, as well as her idea of transcultural memory, defined in the first instance as a process of fluctuation between the individual and collective level of remembering. Attention is turned to the motifs, which are characteristic both for Brodsky’s and Zvyagintsev’s poetics, such as the aquatic symbolism, temporal and topographical relationships, chromatography of cold colours etc. The application of the selected methodology in the presented discussion allows for exposing the dynamics of the changing nature of culture, which becomes the container of the social and territorial fluctuations of memory.

The article aims at a discussion of Iosip Brodsky’s literary, artistic as well as personal connections with Poland and Poles. The poet’s admiration for Polish language and especially his fascination with the literature of the Renaissance period (Kochanowski, Sęp-Szarzyński, Rej and others) and modern poetry (Miłosz, Herbert, Szymborska and others) have been one of the main focuses of the article. The author highlights that fact that thanks to the presence of Polish motifs the poetry of Iosip Brodsky, in the times of important events in the history of Poland, had a special appeal for Polish readers. Brodsky’s eminent friends associated with the Solidarity movement, such as Barańczak, Drawicz and Woroszylski, pointed to its intertextual and, at times, documentary character. The article offers also an insight into Brodsky’s friendship with Miłosz, the friendship which greatly contributed to the Russian poet’s fascination with Polish culture.

This essay with a clearly personal touch is a narrative anchored in cultural texts which deals with experiencing Venice in a multi-faceted way. Talking about his many years of wandering around the city (in the company of, for instance, Joseph Brodsky) and describing places and architectural details important to him, the author argues that especially the mediation of painting, which also documented the history of Venice, allows for a better understanding of the phenomenon of the city. This fusion of the two modalities of experience is also reflected in the structure of the text, which closes the reflection on the contemporary condition of the city and various threats which Venice has to face.

In the article, Milosz’s poem Campo di Fiori and Brodsky’s cycle The Roman Elegies arecompared in the aspect of the interpretation of the role of culture and poetic word in the existentialself-identification of the person and the poet. Through the analysis of Rome’s image in the lyricplot, the author of the article compares the worldview of the poets and their conception of the roleof poetry in history and in being. The second part of the article interprets the direct dialogue ofcontemporary Russian poets (Alexei Makushinskii, Gleb Shulpyakov, Ivan Barkov) with Milosz,that offered new variants of the Polish poet’s lyric collision.

Brodsky’s poem Predstavlenije presents no semantic difficulties for a Russian reader, but attempts to translate it into foreign languages have not always been successful due to a large number of references to Soviet reality and intertextual links found in the text. The present article is devoted to the comparative analysis of three translations of this poem: those done by Thomas Campbell and Alexandra Berlina (both into the English language) as well as one created by Jerzy Czech (into the Polish language).

The purpose of this article is to reflect on the phenomenon of travel to the places in Venice associated with the Russian poet Iosif Brodsky and the way in which the Fondamenta degli Icurabili, a place of imagination that is the title of the Russian and Italian-language translation of the essay Watermark, functions in space and consciousness of travellers. The article focuses primarily on individual literary journeys that were reflected in or even inspired the traveller’s writing activities. The experiences of being in the Fondamenta degli Incurabili and trying to understand the meaning of the toponym were described by many authors of contemporary non-fiction texts about Venice: Yuri Lepski, Yelena Yakovich, Gleb Smirnov, Arkady Ippolitov, Ekaterina Margolis. Two texts are particularly noteworthy, i.e. the reportage by Yuri Lepski Brodskiy tol’ko chto ushël (2020), which is entirely devoted to the experiences related to the journey in the footsteps of the poet and Progulki s Brodskim i tak daleye. Iosif Brodskiy v fil’me Alekseya Shishova i Yeleny Yakovich (2016) by Yelena Yakovich, where Brodsky himself interprets the title of his essay. Methodological tools deriving from the field of geopoetics and cultural geography, such as the place of imagination or reading journeys, proved helpful during the development of the paper.

Describing the poetry of Venclova, Brodsky states that „every major poet has an idiosyncratic inner landscape against which his voice sounds in his mind or, if you prefer, subconsciously”[1]. We cannot but look at it as a potentially auto-referential remark. For Brodsky, definitely a major poet, such a place is Venice, yet it is surprising that his chief essay on that place does not capture many scholars’ attention. At the same time, there are relatively few studies that focus exclusively on the poetic images in Brodsky’s works as the material realization the poet’s reverie. That seems to be a huge negligence given that the metaphysical concern so characteristic of the poet is at its peak in this literary piece. The present study focuses on the images of water in Brodsky’s essay as being the chief substance of his cosmic reverie. The methodology derives from Bachelard’s phenomenological method, the aim of which is to communicate with the imagining consciousness of the poet who creates original images specific to him- or herself. While the poet’s experiences are not taken into account in uch an approach, the cosmology they recreate in poetry is and should be. The main aspects of Brodsky’s cosmic reverie communicated through water are that of the inherent connection between the poet and the universe he creates (а „diffuse ontology”), the existential conflict between human life and absolute Time that is a typical motif in Brodsky’s literary work, as well as the transcendental quality of poetry. All the abovementioned supports Bachelard’s intuition and encourages further study of the poet’s work in this context.

The article deals with the absorption of another writer’s poetics in Andrei Dragunov’s poetry. In Dragunov’s Monologica elements of Joseph Brodsky’s poetical method manifest themselves on various textual levels (rhythm, syntax, vocabulary, motifs, topoi). While the author may not consider it a form of borrowing, the reader is well aware of the other poet’s rhythmical, stylistic and ideological influence here. The younger poet seems to have directly appropriated the “alien discourse”, and another’s voice is not presupposed “in the imitator’s plan” (Mikhail Bakhtin, based on C. Emerson’s translation – Ed.). By comparing the two poets’ verses, the author comes to the conclusion that for Dragunov the borrowed form has become the sole and universal vehicle of expression, preserving the characteristics of the aesthetic norm and stylistic model.
В статье рассматриваются элементы чужой поэтики в стихах Андрея Драгунова. В книге Monologica приемы Иосифа Бродского обнаруживают себя на разных уровнях текста (ритм, синтаксис, лексика, мотивика, топика). Если автор не осознает это как заимствование, то читатель видит здесь ритмический, стилистический, идеологический облик чужой оригинальности. Новый поэт как бы присваивает себе чужое слово, и этот другой голос «вовсе не входит в замыслы подражающего» (Михаил Бахтин). В ходе сопоставления стихов двух поэтов мы приходим к выводу, что чужая форма стала для Драгунова единственным и универсальным способом высказывания, сохраняющим признаки эстетического образца и стилистического шаблона.

В статье рассматриваются интерпретации евангельского сюжета Рождества и поклонения волхвов в условных экфрасисах Б. Пастернака и И. Бродского. Поэты, подчеркивая философский потенциал сюжета, выявили в нем разный личностный смысл, что обусловлено движением времени, изменением исторических контекстов. Акцент на укорененности сюжета Рождества в национальной и мировой культуре у Пастернака сменяется его проблематизацией в стихотворении Бродского.
The paper examines the interpretation of the gospel plot about Christ’s birth and the adoration of the Magi in the poems of Boris Pasternak and Iosif Brodsky. The poets emphasize the philosophical potential of the plot and reveal various personal meanings in it, which is conditioned by the passage of time and the changing historical contexts. While Pasternak focuses on the embedding of the Christmas plot in the national and the world culture, Brodsky problematizes the theme.

В статье рассматривается история создания и публикации стихотворений, входящих в цикл Иосифа Бродского Из «Старых английских песен». Формальные особенности строфики всех четырех стихотворений позволяют предположить, что источниками цикла были песни Роберта Бернса в переводах Самуила Маршака и стихотворение Роберта Фроста Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. Второе и третье стихотворения цикла Бродского могут рассматриваться как парафраз стихотворения Фроста. Появление в конце января 1963 г. стихотворения На смерть Роберта Фроста создает ситуацию, которую можно описать как попытку освоения фростовской поэтики, однако ни парафразы Stopping by Woods…, ни стихотворение памяти американского поэта никогда не включались в авторские сборники, а цикл не был в них представлен полностью. Исключение фростовского эпизода из «поэтической автобиографии» можно объяснить тем, что к моменту подготовки первого авторского сборника стихов (1970) романтический героизм экзистенциального одиночества, который в начале 60-х привлекает Бродского у Фроста, перестает восприниматься им как инвариант собственной судьбы.
The article deals with the history of the creation and publication of poems included in Iosif Brodsky’s cycle From ‘Old English Songs’. The stanzaic features of all four poems suggest that the songs by Robert Burns translated by Samuil Marshak, as well as Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” were the most likely sources of the cycle. The second and third poems of Brodsky’s cycle can be considered as a paraphrase of the above-mentioned Frost’s poem. The poem “On the Death of Robert Frost”, which was written at the end of January 1963, elaborates the Frostian context and provides a means of considering the episode as an attempt to master Frost’s poetics. However, neither the paraphrase “Stopping by Woods…” nor the poem in memory of the American poet were ever included in the author’s collections, and the cycle was not fully represented in them. The exclusion of Frost’s episode from the “poetic autobiography” can be explained by the fact that by the time the author’s first collection of poems (1970) was being prepared, the romantic heroism of existential loneliness, which attracted Brodsky to Frost in the early 1960s, had no longer been perceived by him as an invariant of his own fate.
