It seems that our world is made of mainly nation states - independent states based on one particular nation, sometimes with some minorities in that state. Thus the model seams to be ‘a nation is establishing its boundaries’. On the other hand, our world also has the ‘boundaries that made a nation’ model, in which a nation was created after boundaries were drawn. Most independent European countries belong to the first model but Spain, Belgium, and five tiny states belong to the second model.

Opis:
The article presents a philosophical conceptualization of multilingualism. Philosophy’s general task is to subject human experience to reflective scrutiny and the experience of present day society has changed drastically. Multilingualism, as the vehicle of a new linguistic dispensation, plays a central role in it. We apply the metaphor ‘edge’ to explore the way multiple languages are deployed in, and intensively shape, the postmodern world. We also demonstrate how multilingualism is an edge, not only metaphorically, but involving true and real boundaries of various kinds, and all of them are essential for its nature.

Opis:
The issue of organizational boundaries is a problem discussed from the beginning of the development of the theory of management sciences. Today, it seems that this issue should be subjected to a new conceptualization due to the growing importance of multidimensional spaces in which enterprises operate and the erosion of traditionally interpreted boundaries. At the same time, the notion of a boundary itself is an ambigous concept that derived from and rooted mainly in non-management sciences. Therefore, research on organizational boundaries requires an interdisciplinary approach. In the Polish management science environment, the discussion on border issues is clearly visible, although this is not a question that dominates the mainstream. The aim of the article is to contribute to a scientific discussion in the field of conceptualization of organizational boundaries in the context of a changing reality. The article consists of an introduction, a part devoted to the analysis of organizational boundaries in the perspective of heterogeneous spaces and a part related to presenting the problem of the emergence of “new” boundaries. The whole is concluded with a summary. The article is a review based on interdisciplinary literature research.

The study presents an historical outline of boundaries in views: not only as physical and political barriers, but principally social, economic and imaginative. It is an attempt to understand the role of borders for the mi-grants. The problem is described on the basis of literaturę: Key Island written by Margaret Szejnert and A short guide to the crossing of borders, written by Gazmed Kapllani. The first book shows true stories about migrants, who had arrived at Ellis Island and tried a chance at the seaside of United States of America. The second contains a real experience of author, who is a traveler, but first of all a refugee. Travelers and migrants are examples of groups, which are constantly overcoming boundaries - especially cultural barriers, which make it difficult to cohabitate with existing population. For this reason, the articles address a problem of migration in the context of border crossing.

In spite of the passage of over a dozen years since the signing of the peace treaty in 1998, the divisions between Catholic and Protestant societies in Northern Ireland are still sharply drawn. The segregation of the Northern Irish population can be observed at various levels: not only in areas of residence, the labor market, and the education sector, but also in the sphere of consumption or in patterns of spending free time. Beginning on 1 May 2004, a rapidly growing group of immigrants, of which the largest percentage was constituted by Poles, began to enter this polarized reality. The aim of the article is to portray the local social reaction to the appearance of immigrants from Poland, who - although generally viewed as Catholics - can not be easily written into the social and symbolic boundaries produced by the conflict

The article discusses the problems associated with segmented into separate sentences the stream of spoken language. There are both: theoretical problems (what is utterance?, what are its boundaries?, what are the theoretical proposals for the segmentation of utterances?), and practical problems (where is the real border between the two utterances in spoken language?, what criteria of segmentation stream of spoken language can be used?). The language material – which is the basis for the research presented in this article – comes from twenty task-oriented dialogue sessions with the participation of forty speakers performing a specific task. As a result of the analysis, based on available positions and theoretical reflection I managed to develop a tool for syntactical segmentation of the stream of spoken language. This tool can be presented in the form of a new (innovative) concept of definition of the utterance.

Opis:
The paper reports on a study designed to examine the relationship between the thickness of ego boundaries and attainments in FL pronunciation after a clearly structured form-focused practical course of phonetics. The research involved 45 first-year students of the Institute of English Studies in Wroclaw, Poland, who had attended around thirty 90-minute classes in phonetics. To measure the thickness of their ego boundaries, the Hartmann Boundary Questionnaire (HBQ) was administered. This permitted an examination of which particular types of ego boundaries are related to accuracy in foreign language (FL) pronunciation. The basis for comparing the pronunciation levels of the participants was the Pronunciation Attainment Test consisting of three parts: reading a passage and two vocabulary lists. Attest demonstrated that the differences between the pronunciation levels of the thick and thin ego boundary learners were nonsignificant. However, further statistical analysis (Pearson correlation) showed a positive weak correlation between 3 types of boundaries (represented by Categories 7, 8 and 12 of the HBQ) and attainments in pronunciation. More specifically, the less organized the direct environment (e.g., the working place) of the subjects was and the more preference the participants showed for perceiving and accepting blurred borders between constructs, the better their pronunciation was. A closer look at particular students revealed the importance of boundaries between thoughts and feelings, and boundaries related to defensive mechanisms and to sensitivity in FL pronunciation learning.

Classification plays an important role in many fields of life, including medical diagnosis support. In the paper, fuzzy clustering algorithm dedicated to classification methods is proposed. Its goal is to find pairs of prototypes located near boundaries of both classes of objects. The minimization procedure of the proposed criterion function is described. The algorithm for determining the value of the clustering parameter is also presented. Presented results (synthetic dataset) confirm correctness of clustering - most of final prototypes, determined based on obtained pairs, are located between boundary of two classes.

Opis:
Soft Belarusization: (Re)building of Identity or “Border Reinforcement”The paper focuses on shifts in official discourse in Belarus since 2014, after the Ukrainian events, that are labelled “soft Belarusization”. This new approach can be interpreted as an attempt to support nationally oriented identity practices and as an attempt to establish more visible political and cultural boundaries between Belarus and the “Russian world”. Firstly, this paper elaborates on the specifics of Belarusian identity and presents the historical and political background of the ongoing events. Secondly, several manifestations of soft Belarusization processes are analysed, such as changes in Belarusian authorities’ rhetoric, their changing attitude towards Belarusian and unofficial state symbols and previously officially disregarded historical events and personalities, steps towards the creation of new symbols, and new relationships between official and “alternative” discourses.

Opis:
We are at a unique point in history when an unprecedented number of women are beginning to retire. Earlier work has suggested that women have few identity concerns in retirement because they had less attachment to the labor force. In contrast, women of the baby-boomer generation are the first cohorts to have participated in significant numbers in the paid work force since the institutionalization of retirement. Using in-depth, semi-structured interviews, this article explores baby-boomer women’s process of leaving the paid work force and queries what retirement means to them. It focuses on the eroding boundary between work and retirement and issues of personal and social identity for the research participants. When women retire, they navigate a number of key boundaries between full-time, paid and other work and between their own transitions and the transitions of others in their lives. The women’s social identity reflects their experience of the intersection of retirement, aging, and gender. The themes that permeate the interviews include the loss of a primary identity without having a new positive identity to claim, being retired as a conversation stopper, and experiencing the invisibility that often comes with aging. Developing a unique identity and finding new meaning as a retiree is a challenging process for baby-boomer women as they negotiate “lingering identities” to avoid crossing the identity boundary from professional to retired. The article uses the words of the research participants to explore how they construct boundaries between work and retirement, the extent of their permeability, and the impact of women’s relationships and identity on those boundaries.

There is a quite big progress in the area of education on acceptance and tolerance towards multiculturalism. The main supporter of politics of multiculturalism is Will Kymlicka, and therefore I refer to his thoughts in this essay. However, in contemporary socio-cultural situation of Western civilization, we need something more than the mere acceptance of cultural diversity. It is worth promoting educational programmes that include themes related to the raising of citizens’ awareness of boundaries of self – both in the individual and group aspect. At the same time majority groups should be supported by some tools that would help them to protect their identities without harming others.
