Opis:
This article presents an analysis of borderland organizations in eastern Poland. It examines the nature of organizations creating the idea of a borderland, their territorial location, and the meanings of the borderland representations they create. The category of “borderland” is mainly used by local self-governments and NGOs. After 1989, these actors concentrated on organizing the region’s ethnic differences. The oldest borderland organizations are focused on the multicultural past of the region. Poland’s accession to the EU resulted in the reorganization of cross-border relations in connection with the emergence of new organizations interested in the state border or in the profits associated with proximity to it. The idea of a borderland in eastern Poland is supported by a small number of local institutions, which have not created a unified representation of what the borderland is. Therefore, the region has retained features of a coexisting and/or interdependent borderland.

Celem artykułu jest próba reinterpretacji pojęcia tożsamości pogranicza jako kategorii socjologii pogranicza. Przedstawiona koncepcja, w nawiązaniu do istoty tożsamości oraz pogranicza, uwzględnia łącznie zarówno tożsamość większości, jak i mniejszości kulturowych zamieszkujących na pograniczach. Została tak przedstawiona, aby mogła mieć zastosowanie do realizacji badań empirycznych. W zakończeniu Autor wyróżnił trzy typy tożsamości zbiorowych, określanych jako tożsamości pogranicza: tożsamość wiążącą, tożsamość pograniczną oraz tożsamość intergraniczną.
The aim of the article is an attempt to reinterpret the concept of borderland identity as a category of borderland sociology. The presented concept, in reference to the essence of the identity and the borderland, takes into account both the identity of the majority as well as cultural minorities living on the borderlands. It has been presented so that it could be applicable to the implementation of empirical research. In conclusion, the Author distinguished three types of collective identities defined as borderline identities: binding identity, borderland identity and inter-border identity.

Observations on the Polish lexis in Lithuania on the borderland of Lithuania, Latvia and BelarusThe paper comments on the lexicon of Polish on the borderland of Lithuania, Latvia and Belarus (in the Zarasai district and the Ignalina district in Lithuania). The remarks, illustrated with selected examples, have been formulated on the basis of data gathered during field research in 2000–2001 and 2010–2011. The paper aims primarily at discussing the extent to which the collected material contributes to the state-of-the-art knowledge on the vocabulary of the North-Eastern Borderlands; the author analyzes the types of words present in the collected material in order to specify whether they are generally attested and well documented, or conversely – less known and only occasionally considered in literature.A large part of the collected material consists of vocabulary well known in Lithuania, and often in the whole area of the North-Eastern Borderlands. These include old expressions of various origin typical of the Eastern Borderlands, richly documented in works devoted to the Polish language of the North-Eastern Borderlands; loans from Lithuanian and Belorussian; or Polish archaic forms, e.g. asystentka ‘maid of honour’, budni ‘usual, ordinary’, fest ‘church fair’, gadzina ‘viper’, hurba ‘snowbank’, karszun ‘hawk’. Another numerous group are newer loanwords from Russian and Lithuanian, popularised in the post-war period, as well as in the recent years along with the changing role of the Lithuanian language, e.g. elektra ‘electric light, electricity’, awtoławka ‘travelling shop’, balnica ‘hospital’.A small, yet extremely interesting for researchers, part of the lexis is composed of vocabulary not so well known in the North-Eastern Borderlands or in Lithuania, regionally bound (exhibited solely in the examined areas or in two former tightly-knit Polish-speaking areas), with limited frequency (rare words, appearing in various regions, yet seldom recognized), or restricted as far as the chronology is concerned (not attested presently, until now known only from older, pre-war sources, mainly from the works of Halina Turska), e.g. bracienik ‘cousin’, ciuszka ‘blowhole’, czeladź ‘children, offspring’, lun ‘marsh, swamp’, babaczka ‘bow tie’, murawiejnik ‘anthill’, ciełuszutka ‘heiferdim’, światleć ‘to shine’.A separate group encompasses words previously undocumented in literature, e.g. wieczuruszkować ‘to go to soirees, parties in the evening’, including the unknown word-formation variants, e.g. walaniantówka ‘epilepsy’ vs. walentaczka/walantaczka, or the regionally-bound diminutive forms with typical suffixes, today rare, e.g. buteleniatka ‘bottledim’, chustalutka ‘handkerchiefdim’.It is worth emphasizing that certain parts of the described vocabulary might still be commonly used, however the scarcity of extensive lexical research, as well as the lack of a full dictionary of Polish of the North-Eastern Borderlands render it impossible to resolve this question. Заметки о лексике польского языка в Литве на литовско-латышско-белорусском пограничьеВ статье изложены заметки о лексике польского языка, функционирующего в Литве на литовско-латышско-белорусском пограничье (в районах Зарасай и Игналина), составленные по материалам, собранным во время полевых исследований в 2000–2001 и 2010–2011 годы и проиллюстрированные отобранными примерами. Цель статьи состоит, прежде всего, в том, чтобы обратить внимание на то, какие новшества в польской лексике северовосточных районов отражает собранный материал, какого типа лексику он подтверждает – распространённую и хорошо закрепившуюся либо представленную словами менее знакомыми, реже обнаруживаемыми в литературе. Основная часть собранной лексики – это слова хорошо известные в Литве и на всей территории „польщизны кресовой”, слова различного происхождения из давнего словарного состава, хорошо описанные в научной литературе – литовско-белорусские генетические заимствования или польские архаизмы, напр. asystentka ‘подруга невесты’, budni ‘будничный’, fest ‘храмовый праздник’, gadzina ‘гадюка’, hurba ‘сугроб’, karszun ‘ястреб’. Значительную группу составляют более поздние заимствования из русского и литовского языков, вошедшие в обиход в послевоенный период и в последние годы в связи с новой функцией литовского языка, напр. elektra ‘электричество’, awtoławka ‘автолавка’, balnica ‘больница’. Малочисленную группу лексики, однако наиболее интересную, по мнению исследователей, составляют слова менее распространённые на бывшей польской северовосточной территории или же по всей Литве. Они ограничены территориально (лишь исследованными районами или двумя компактными польскоязычными ареалами), по частотности (редко появляются в отдельных местах), хронологически (в настоящее время не засвидетельствованны или известны лишь по довоенным работам Г. Турской и по записям речи переселенцев из Виленщины в Польшу), напр. bracienik ‘двоюродный брат, кузен’, ciuszka ‘прорубь’, chromina ‘хозяйственная постройка’, czeladź ‘дети, потомки’, lun ‘трясина, топь’, babaczka ‘бабочка, вид галстука’, murawiejnik ‘муравейник’, ciełuszutka ‘тёлка’, światleć ‘светлеть’. Отдельную группу составляют слова, не упоминавшиеся до сих пор в ли- тературе, напр. wieczuruszkować ‘танцевать на вечеринках’, в том числе неизвестные до сих пор словообразовательные варианты, напр. walaniantówka ‘эпилепсия’ перед walentaczka/walantaczka ‘эпилепсия’, или, редкие сегодня, региональные деминутивы с характерными суффиксами, напр. buteleniatka ‘бутылочка’, chustalutka ‘платочек’. Следует оговориться, что часть вышеуказанной лексики возможно известна шире, однако отсутствие широкозапланированных лексических исследований и большого полного словаря польского северовосточного региолекта препятствует решению этого вопроса.

In the paper, the relation between a borderland region and the social identity of borderland inhabitants is considered. A question is posed whether the borderland has a stronger impact on the social identity of its inhabitants or the direction of the impact is opposite. The answer to this question is sought in the studies of borderland theoreticians and researchers, and in a reconstruction of how this relation is contemplated by them. The analyses lead to the conclusion that the borderland, its characteristics and properties undoubtedly have a stronger impact on the identity of its inhabitants than their identity and its specificity affect the borderland. In the conclusions, a thesis is formulated about the borderland effect, which is a sociological unobservable variable, whose impact, among others, is manifested in specific social identity profiling of its inhabitants.

Od 1989 roku na polskich granicach i pograniczach zachodzą istotne zmiany. Polskie granice różnią się od siebie głównie pod względem funkcji politycznych i gospodarczych, jakie obecnie pełnią, przede wszystkim z uwagi na uczestnictwo Polski w Unii Europejskiej i Układzie z Schengen. Mieszkańcy różnych pograniczy mają także odrębny bagaż doświadczeń historycznych, związanych z uwarunkowaniami z przeszłości. Czy te różnice przekładają się na odmienne postawy mieszkańców pograniczy? W artykule tym poddane zostały analizie wyniki badań zrealizowanych na polskich pograniczach od 2008 do 2010 r., celem porównania postaw mieszkańców różnych pograniczy – zachodniego, południowego i wschodniego wobec funkcji granicy, oceny sytuacji na pograniczu oraz ich otwartości na kontakty międzykulturowe bądź dystansu wobec sąsiednich narodów.
Since 1989 important changes have been hold on Polish borders and borderlands. The Polish borders differ from each other mainly regarding political and economic functions, they now performing. This is basically because of the presence of Poland in European Union and Schengen Agreement. The inhabitants of various borderlands have also other historic experiences connected with the past. Does differences transform into other attitudes of borderlands’ inhabitants? In this article the results of the research on Polish borderlands from 2008 to 2010 were analyzed. The aim of the research was to compare the attitudes of the inhabitants’ of various borderlands: east, west, south towards the functions of the borders, their assessment of the borderlands’ situation and their openness on intercultural contact or their social distance to neighboring nations.

The borderland is a specific reality, which not reduce for one culture because this culture was created by connected, penetrated or crashed culture in one social space, for example borderland language, traditions and customs or architecture. The distinctive mark of borderland are ethnic and nation minorities which define this social space. The Polish and Czech Republic borderland is being created by Polish and Czech cultures but others – Slovak, German, Moravian and Roma cultures, too. In this context we can talk about isolation process on the one hand and on the other hand about social exchange which give new social reality. The research of borderland is first of all analysis how cultural diversity create social, economic and politic life in the borderland.

The paper includes the results of the sociological survey accomplished in Zgorzelec (2010), Gubin (201 3) and Słubice (2015). In each case the same methodology was applied – structured interview with probability representative samples. The paper focuses on issues: 1. The emotional approach of the inhabitants of Zgorzelec, Gubin and Słubice, i.e. declared level of liking, indifference or antipathy towards German neighbours, and the opinions on mutual relations. 2. The readiness for contact with a German neighbour appearing in different roles (“the close ones”, “professional”, and the roles “connected with the market”). 3. The type of contacts with Germans – the reasons of mobility to the neighbouring German town by the inhabitants of Zgorzelec, Gubin and Słubice and frequency of border crossing in order to achieve particular goals. Interethnic relations in the situation of geographical vicinity and the open border are shaped on different grounds than the ones in the interior. We try to compare the results of the research accomplished in the borderland with the data obtained from the research done on the all-Polish sample (by the Institute of Public Affairs). The paper includes also methodological reflections (about comparison of researches within borderlandstudies and research on borderland effect).

The wise policy of stimulating the social processes in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania caused strong integration trends in area of the ethnic diversification of the population. A phenomenon of tolerance enabled inhabitants of Podlasie the coexistence and the symbiosis, gave a base to create the syncretic culture of the borderland. It was manifested in onomastics. On the one hand, the anthroponymy of Podlasie is reflecting the coexistence of many languages and cultures, on the other − forming some identifying formulas common for all ethnic and religious groups. The synergy and overlapping different patterns in onomastics showed results in hybrid formations and some structures, typical only for given region, what was the most reflected in an abridged names and surnames forms of Podlasie inhabitants.

W artykule Autor poszukuje odpowiedzi na pytanie, dlaczego w małych miastach województwa białostockiego okresu międzywojennego doszło do stosowania brutalnej przemocy przez niektórych mieszkańców narodowości polskiej, przy zróżnicowanym udziale Niemców, wobec obywateli polskich narodowości żydowskiej. W pracy Autor odwołał się do tożsamości pogranicza jako kategorii socjologii pogranicza, która umożliwia analizę występujących na omawianym pograniczu polsko-żydowskim dwóch niemal przeciwstawnych typów tożsamości zbiorowych. Wskazano na pięć głównych wymiarów podziałów społecznych (przestrzenne, religijne, poststanowe, narodowe, cywilizacyjne) oraz na więź terytorialną, jako czynnik łączności międzygrupowej. W podsumowaniu Autor wskazuje na brak działań ze strony zewnętrznych aktorów politycznych i kulturowych w warunkach narastania procesów modernizacyjnych w małych miastach.
In the article, the author is seeking to understand the historical case of brutal violence in small towns of the Bialystok Province aimed by some individuals of Polish ethnic background, with a varied participation of Germans, against the citizens of Polish Jewish ethnic background. The author employs the term “the identity of the borderland” as a category of borderland sociology, which allows to analyze the two quite opposite types of collective identities present at the said Polish-Jewish borderland. The five main dimensions of social divisions (spatial, religious, post-state, national, and civilizational) as well as the territorial bond as a factor in inter-group ties are indicated and analyzed. In conclusion, the author draws attention to the lack of involvement by external political and cultural actors in the conditions of fast-paced modernization processes in small towns.

The text comprises a normative concern for the educational “borderland effect”. Within the hermeneutical circle, there are: (1) M. Bakhtin’s semiotics of culture and the idea of “borderland effect” as a developmental mechanism increasing the polyphonic dynamics and value of the Other; (2) an analogy to the “decentration” mechanism according to J. Piaget and J. Habermas and the idea of dialogue inspired by H.–G. Gadamer; (3) M. Buber’s idea of two types of faith and difficulties of ecumenism; (4) H. Hesse’s idea of spiritual awakening and inner transformation; (5) the types of adaptation to the complexity of interactions and the vision of identity as “the third value”, following D. Mostwin’s analysis of the Polish emigration in the USA; (6) difficulties with the borderland effect in creating Polish schools in Latvia in D. Urlińska’s experiment; (7) F. Znaniecki’s concern to eliminate intercultural antagonisms; (8) normative strategies towards tradition, freedom and change, as diversified attitudes towards differences and the “borderland effect”; (9) the coupling of interests of the disabled in integrated schools as a borderland problem; (10) the concept of the “borderland order” as a mechanism of sustainability and oscillation in dual integration with shifting the local dominants; (11) B. Skarga’s cultural attitude open to irony, withdrawing cultural persuasiveness. The “borderland effect” brings change of the cultural “meta-pattern” for education. The analyses conducted by M. Mead and F. Znaniecki imply the intercultural education open to differences between the young, against the pressure of antagonisms of the world of adult people.
Tekst postuluje normatywną troskę o edukacyjny „efekt pogranicza”. Są w kole hermeneutycznym: (1) semiotyka kultury M. Bachtina i idea „efektu pogranicza”, jako mechanizmu rozwojowego dynamiki polifonii, wartości spotkania z Innym; (2) analogia z mechanizmem „decentracji” wg J. Piageta i J. Habermasa oraz idea dialogu z inspiracji H.-G. Gadamera; (3) idea M. Bubera dwóch typów wiary i trudności ekumenizmu; (4) H. Hessego idea przebudzenia duchowego i przemiany wewnętrznej; (5) typy adaptacji do złożoności interakcji oraz wizja tożsamości, jako „trzeciej wartości” za D. Mostwin analizą emigracji polskiej w USA; (6) kłopoty z efektem pogranicza przy tworzeniu szkół polskich na Łotwie z eksperymentu M. Urlińskiej; (7) rozważania F. Znanieckiego nt. eliminacji antagonizmów międzykulturowych; (8) strategie normatywne traktowania tradycji, wolności i zmiany, różnicujące odniesienie do inności i efektu pogranicza; (9) dwoiste sprzęganie interesu osób z niepełnosprawnościami w szkołach integracyjnych jako problem pogranicza; (10) pojęcie „porządku pogranicza”, jako mechanizmu równoważenia oraz oscylacji w dwoistym integrowaniu struktury, z przemieszczaniem lokalnych dominant; (11) postawa kulturowa B. Skargi otwarta na ironię, zawieszanie perswazyjności kulturowych. „Efekt pogranicza” niesie zmianę „metawzorca” kulturowego dla edukacji. Analizy M. Mead i F. Znanieckiego implikują edukację międzykulturową otwartą na różnice u ludzi młodych, wbrew presji antagonizmów świata ludzi dorosłych.

Opis:
The article summarizes the experience of the author’s field dialectological studies on the Belarusian-Polish borderland. The article describes the territory of research, touches upon the issue of national self-identification of residents of the investigated locus. The author briefly presents the features of language research at the locus of the borderland and describes the language codes identified during the field research. In conclusion, the methodological proposals for the study of the borderlands.

What is explored in the presented text, in reference to the results of authorial studies conducted in 2005/06 and 2012/13 on teachers working in kindergartens, primary, lower- and upper-secondary schools, are the issues of the implementation of intercultural education in the Polish-Czech borderland. This is done in reference to the levels of the work of school and the teacher, outlined by Jerzy Nikitorowicz, within three major tasks of intercultural education. The empirical data based on questionnaire surveys, observation and document analysis allowed for characterizing contemporary chances and barriers of education towards interculturalism in the environment of both urban and rural school.

The article briefly presents activities of The Department of Polish Studies at the University of Ostrava. It also calls attention to the main fields of interests of the author of the article who represents the young generation of Czech polonists. While concentrating on her research, the author investigates the areas of contact between Polish and Czech languages within the church community in Zaolzie (Czech Republic). She analyses the results of the survey conducted amongst the believers and priests in that region as well as the recordings of the sermons preached by the Roman Catholic priests in Zaolzie.
