The purpose of this paper is to present some motifs in Bolesław Leśmian’s Klechdy polskie. I am primarily interested in the fairytales’ poetics of economy related to the motifs of money and treasure. I also analyse the erotic desire which exceeds the traditional social order and the relationship between the word and object. All these motifs create Leśmian’s vision of reality, which cannot be included in the established cognitive and ethical rules.

In this article texts of Bolesław Leśmian dramas entitled: Pierrot i Kolombina and Skrzypek Opętany have been analysed. The main objects of this article are as follows: problem of writer’s block and his efforts in overcoming this crisis. Interpretation of Leśman’s dramas is methodologically refer to anthropological theory proposed in Gilbert Durand literary studies. Symbolic mining, hidden in mentioned texts, have been taken under mythocritical interpretation. Additionally the following aspects were discussed: artistic palingenesis of archaic myths, valorisation of setting typical for mysteries of regeneration and literary actualisation of ritual scenario.

The present article aims to study The Black Goat by Bolesław Leśmian in view of its intertextual dialogue with the antique model of metamorphic literature: Metamorphoses, or The Golden Ass by Apuleius. Although the fairy tale was published in a volume entitled Polish Fairy Tales, it is partially based on foreign sources that the author cleverly hid behind other Polish stories. The comparison of The Black Goat with The Golden Ass shows that the Polish poet drew inspiration mainly from Apuleius’s novel, in which a man is also transformed into a stubborn animal. The symbolism of colours and light, which Leśmian modernized and adapted for the modern Polish reader, confirms this hypothesis. Comparative work on both texts helps to understand Leśmian’s reinterpretation of the concept of metamorphosis and his contribution to the reflection on this topic.

The text presents an interpretation of poetical pieces by Bolesław Leśmian and Leopold Staff with the same title: Pszczoły (“The Bees”). What constitutes the departure point for the said analyses is a prolific metaphor theme that has been present in interpretative discourse since Antiquity, namely that of the “bee-poet”, but also identifying those insects with the Death, the mystery of existence, and with the being, all of which facilitates the reading of these two forgotten poems of Polish modernism in terms of the sacred (sacrum) and existence as well as the identity of beings (the latter category is referred to in interpretation via the ship of Theseus paradox).

The aim of this analysis of the oneiric representations of phantom women in the poetry of Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer and Bolesław Leśmian is to compare and characterize the workings of the poetic imagination of a pair of poets who represent the first and the second generation of the Young Poland movement. Their poems are read and interpreted within the framework of Young Poland's conceptualization of dreams and its use of the dream motif so as to explain the functioning and the ontological status of the oneiric female characters. The analysis shows that both Przerwa-Tetmajer's and Leśmian's apparitions belong to more than one category. While some are wholly imaginary, others are known to have existed as real persons and have merely been transposed into an image of a man's mind.

The complex and mysterious story of Bolesław Leśmian’s drama Vasilij Buslaev has led some scholars to doubt the very existence of the piece. The correspondence of Maksim Gor’kij may help to solve the mystery. The authoritative Russian writer acted as a reviewer when the decision to accept or reject this play for print was to be taken. Once Gor’kij had read the manuscript, the piece was returned to the author, who was informed that it would not be published. Unfortunately, its fate thereafter remains unknown.

The obvious difficulties notwithstanding, Bolesław Leśmian’s poetry has been translated into over a dozen languages of a varied degree of affinity with Polish. The diverse strategies adopted, the differences in quality and quantity of renditions in particular countries as well as the still marginal position of the poet in the European canon all encourage translation-oriented methodological reflection on his oeuvre. The aim of the paper is to give an overview of the main difficulties encountered by the translators of Leśmian’s verse and, on basis of translation practice in various languages, to extract certain recipes, i.e. solutions and approaches which, if applied on a wider scale, promise an optimised result of a translation effort. With reference to the concept of translation dominant(s), four elements have been indicated as necessary for achieving adequacy when rendering Leśmian. The issues discussed encompass the re-creation of neologisms – with an emphasis on the systematic character of the poet’s word formation – the verse form, including the role of rhythm and the entailed question of whether the renditions should retain the same metre, the mythopoeic dimension of Leśmian’s poetry, as well as its unique character. Worth mentioning are also the problems resulting from the fact that the oeuvre of the poet in a foreign language is co-created by a number of translators in each case and from the differing circumstances of reception in particular cultures. Examples are drawn from translations into English, German, Russian, Ukrainian and Italian.
Wbrew oczywistym trudnościom poezję Bolesława Leśmiana przekładano na kilkanaście języków o różnym stopniu pokrewieństwa z polszczyzną. Odmienne strategie i poziom tłumaczeń, ich różna ilość w poszczególnych krajach oraz wciąż marginalna pozycja autora Łąki w kanonie europejskim skłaniają do podjęcia refleksji metodologicznej nad jego poezją z perspektywy przekładu. Artykuł ma na celu podsumowanie najistotniejszych trudności, jakie twórczość Leśmiana stawia przed tłumaczami, i wyabstrahowanie na podstawie praktyki translatorskiej w różnych językach pewnych recept – takich rozwiązań i podejść, których szersze zastosowanie dawałoby szansę na zoptymalizowanie rezultatu przekładu. W nawiązaniu do koncepcji dominanty wyróżniono cztery pierwiastki, których uwzględnienia wymaga adekwatny przekład tej poezji. Prześledzono takie kwestie jak odtwarzanie neologizmów – z naciskiem na systemowość Leśmianowskiego słowotwórstwa – zagadnienia wersyfikacyjne, w tym rolę rytmu i, co za tym idzie, pytanie o ewentualną ekwimetryczność przekładu, wymiar mitotwórczy tej poezji oraz jej unikalny charakter. Na zasygnalizowanie zasługują także problemy związane ze współtworzeniem obcojęzycznego makrotekstu przez różnych tłumaczy oraz odmienne uwarunkowania odbioru w zagranicznej recepcji. Przykłady zostały zaczerpnięte z tłumaczeń na języki angielski, niemiecki, rosyjski, ukraiński i włoski.

The author analyzes Kazimierz Świegocki's book with respect to the most important changes in modern humanities – especially to the anthropological turn, that is the literary scholars' interest in the methods of cultural as well as comparative studies. Kłobukowski interprets Świegocki's comparative study on two planes – as an intriguing and sometimes innovative study of great Polish poets who participated in creating the literary tradition of the 19th and 20th centuries, and also as an attempt at building anthropology of literature using modern methods, but also deeply rooted in the philological tradition – based on the concept of subjectivity, whose vision may be reconstructed on the basis of the literary text. The reviewer thinks that the construction of the argument based on juxtaposing two different types of poetical anthropology that may be recognized in Mickiewicz's and Norwid's work is one of Świegocki's most interesting ideas. Świegocki's proposition seems advisable both to those who study Romanticism, and to theoreticians of literature. A vigorous and elegant style of the book makes it also recommendable to students, or even to people who are not “professionally” connected with literature.

The biography of Boleslaw Lesmian (1877–1937) shows a maladjustment of artist to reality. The Poet escapes to the world of imagination — an alternative reality where he could be settled. In Boleslaw Lesmian’s imaginary the human way leads to the archetypal forest. The image of the forest, implanted deeply in culture as a place for outlaws (Robin Hood), fugitives (Tristan and Isolde) and knights-errant (Parsifal) is transformed by Lesmian. In the Lesmian’s imaginary the forest takes a new semantic dimension and becomes one of the main symbols as the Epiphany of the Mother Earth (Tellus Mater, Pammetor Ge). The analyses, presented in this article, shows that act of wandering in the forest paths is the symbol of a human way which leads to self-knowledge. For Lesmian, who was lost in everyday life, an archetypal figure of Mother Earth has an important therapeutic value. A methodological framework for the discussion is based on the concepts offered by Gilbert Durand, a French philosopher of culture. Anthropology of imagination as a method of literary studies focuses on mundus imaginalis of the author, understood as a manifestation of symbolic powers of imagination and the artist is perceived as an imaginative phenomenon. In the anthropological and myth-critical studies a canonical definition of myth is adopted after Gilbert Durand, where myth is a dynamic system of symbols (mythical figures), archetypes and imagery constituting narrations permanently incorporated into the culture. In Durand’s perspective, mythical figure (figure mythique) is an archetype imagery (image archétype) capable of being expressed at the language level. Imagination is understood as the Consciousness Breeding Imagery. Imagery provide a structure capable of transformations, enabling decomposition and transformation of imagery in cultural texts and their literary palingenesis.

The paper surveys intertextual aspects of Bolesław Leśmian’s ballad Dziewczyna across translations into English and Russian (translation series), as well as Czech and German (single renditions). Thematic intertextuality connected with the fairy-tale convention and specific references to philosophical concepts (Descartes, Kant) are discussed. Dialogic relations absent from the original but activated in translations are also indicated (e.g. a Biblical context). The following aspects influencing the rendition of dialogic signals are considered important: metrical restrictions, the unwieldiness of the canonic formulation of intertexts for poetic appropriation, the skill and worldviews of the translators. Thanks to the numerous translations of the ballad, we can ascertain whether awareness and prioritizing of referential qualities change with time, target culture and the translators’ backgrounds.

Autorzy artykułu proponują w badaniach nad rozwojem rodzimej literatury dziecięcej i młodzieżowej koncepcję kamieni milowych, zaczerpniętą z międzynarodowych badań w tej dziedzinie (zwłaszcza ze studiów anglojęzycznych). Ta kwestia zostaje rozważona w odniesieniu do prozy i w kontekście nowoczesności (rozumianej jako formacja kulturowa). Jako dzieła literackie, które miały charakter przełomowy w pierwszej połowie XX w., zostają wskazane utwory Bolesława Leśmiana (Przygody Sindbada Żeglarza i Klechdy sezamowe; oba tomy wydane w 1913 r.), Janusza Korczaka (dylogia o Królu Maciusiu, 1923, Kiedy znów będę mały, 1925, oraz Kajtuś Czarodziej, 1934) i Jana Brzechwy (Akademia Pana Kleksa, 1946). Autorzy omawiają nowatorstwo treściowe i formalne tych utworów oraz ich wpływ na rozwój polskiej literatury dziecięcej i młodzieżowej.
The authors of the article explore the concept of milestones in the research on the development of Polish children’s and young adult literature which has been derived from international, mainly English-language studies. This concept is given consideration with regard to prose and in the context of modernity understood as a cultural formation. The literary works which in the first half of the 20th century revealed a breakthrough character are exemplified by Przygody Sindbada Żeglarza [The Adventures of Sindbad the Sailor] and Klechdy sezamowe [Sesame Tales] by Bolesław Leśmian (both published in 1913), the King Matt duology (1923), Kiedy znów będę mały [When I Am Little Again] (1925), and Kajtuś czarodziej [Kaytek the Wizard] (1934) by Janusz Korczak and Akademia Pana Kleksa [Professor Inkblot’s Academy of Wonders] (1946) by Jan Brzechwa. The authors discuss the novelty of these works in terms of their content and form as well as their influence on the development of Polish children’s and young adult literature.

Bolesław Leśmian’s poem *** [Z dłońmi tak splecionymi, jakbyś klęcząc, spała…] (With your hands clasped as if you slept kneeling) is analyzed with regard to the categories of carnality and representation, paying attention to the issue of rhythm. The author examines “significance”, traces the occurrence of transversal reflections and researches the logical and rhetorical structure which reveals its dynamic character and spatiality in the form of DNA chain links. The interpretation of the phonological layer of the text brings to mind somatic experiencing of reading the lyric poem, and consequently the way in which Leśmian’s the subject establishes contact with the reader.  
Autor rozpatruje wiersz Bolesława Leśmiana *** [Z dłońmi tak splecionymi, jakbyś klęcząc, spała…] pod względem kategorii cielesności i reprezentacji, skupiając uwagę na zagadnieniu rytmu. Analizuje „znaczącość”, śledzi występowanie transwersalnych odbić, bada logiczną oraz retoryczną strukturę, która odsłania swoją dynamiczność oraz przestrzenność pod postacią ogniw łańcucha DNA. Interpretacja fonologicznej powłoki tekstu uzmysławia somatyczne doświadczenie lektury liryku, a tym samym sposób, w jaki Leśmianowski podmiot nawiązuje kontakt z czytelnikiem.

Opis:
The present article has to be understood as a first introduction on Maurice Maeterlinck’s influence on Bolesław Leśmian’s work in general. The topic being quite broad, the focus is on theater and more precisely on the connection between Pelleas and Melisande (1892) and Possessed Violin Player (1911–1912). In order to understand this intertextual parallel, biographical and historical context as well as theoretic and philosophical relations is also examined in the first and the second parts of the article. The comparison reveals striking connections, relying mainly on theater which aims to be exclusively suggestive.
