Opis:
Introduction: Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) is one of the most common autoimmune thyroid disorders and o the most common cause of hypothyroidism, but the relation between TSH and body mass is still unclear. Material and methods: The group studied consisted of 53 patients with HT in euthyreosis and 28 healthy individuals. All the patients underwent thyroid ultrasonography and body mass analysis with the use of a medical analyzer INBODY 200. Blood samples were also analyzed for TSH and anti-thyroid antibodies. Results: The patients with HT had higher body mass (p=0.008), body mass index (BMI) (p=0.02), Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR) (0.01) and fat mass (p=0.02) than had the controls. In HT group increased body mass was observed in 72% of the patients (overweight in 38% and obesity in 35% of them), as compared with 38% of overweight/obesity in the control group. Thyroid volume was significantly lower (p=0.01) and anti-peroxidase antibodies level was two times higher in the group with the treatment period > 2 years, but the patients with relatively short treatment period were 7 kg heavier and their fat mass was 6 kg higher than in the subjects treated longer than 2 years. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the patients with HT, even in euthyreosis, have significantly higher body mass, BMI, WHR and fat mass than healthy individuals, which is probably associated with previous disturbances that led to the increase in fat mass at the stage of hypothyroidism. The observed changes tend to normalize during L-thyroxine replacement therapy.

Opis:
Wieloletnie badania dotyczące poborowych do wojska pozwoliły stworzyć pełny obraz kondycji biologicznej młodego pokolenia mężczyzn. Jednakże brakuje aktualnych opracowań poświęconych zagadnieniom rozwoju fizycznego mężczyzn pochodzących ze wschodnich regionów kraju. Stąd też w niniejszej pracy podjęto się oceny rozwoju fizycznego poborowych z czterech powiatów z terenu Południowego Podlasia. Materiał do niniejszej pracy stanowią wyniki badań uzyskane z Wojskowej Komisji Uzupełnień w Białej Podlaskiej.
Many years of research on conscripts have allowed one to build up a complete picture of the biological condition of the young generation of men. However, there are no current studies on the aspects of the physical development of men coming from the eastern regions of the country. Hence, this article attempts to examine the physical development of conscripts from four districts of Southern Podlasie. The article draws on the results obtained from the Military Replenishment Commission in Biała Podlaska. The research took place from February 6 to April 25, 2006. A total of 3,425 conscripts came from the followings districts: bialski, radzyński, parczewski and łukowski. Based on body height and mass, values of Ponderal Index (PI) and Body Mass Index (BMI) were calculated. The results were statistically analysed by calculating arithmetic means and standard deviations. The differences between conscripts coming from the different districts were estimated on the basis of the one-way analysis of variance ANOVA. It was found that conscripts coming from the eastern regions of the country demonstrated a similar level of physical development in comparison to their peers from the nationwide sample. As a result, not only do the results of the research presented reflect the state of the biological condition of the young generation of men, but they also provide a basis for a comparative analysis taking account of the variability between subjects and may also be used for comparative studies of conscripts from other regions of the country.

Background. The sporting habits of parents have a very strong effect on the involvement of preschoolers in sports. Objectives. The aim of the study was to evaluate the physical activity (PA) of preschool children depending on their socioeconomic status and to determine the relationship between body mass and sporting habits. Material and methods. The research sample consisted of 252 Hungarian children (134 boys and 118 girls) of preschool age and their parents. A questionnaire was developed based on EU guidelines and it was used to evaluate PA and sporting habits. Results. A correlation was found between sporting habits and the percentile values of Body Mass Index by age. The survey showed that 86.5% of the children falling into the underweight category and 81.3% of those with normal weight were regularly involved in sports with their parents; these values were significantly higher than those of their overweight counterparts, of whom only 66.2% did sports with their parents (chi2 = 9.8, p = 0.028). Furthermore, 59.5% of underweight children and 63.3% of those with normal weight reported that their parents were involved in sports, while in the case of overweight children, this was observed in only 43.1% of parents (chi2 = 7.68, p < 0.05). Most of the children who were underweight or had normal weight did sports with their parents 2 to 3 times a week or more than 3 times a week (chi2 = 28.7, p = 0.000). Conclusions. The physical activity of preschool children was low. Obesity was more likely to occur in families with lower incomes. The development of educational programs for children, their families, preschool teachers, family doctors and pediatricians is needed to promote healthy diets and encourage more frequent physical activity.

Introduction and objective. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome and overweight in individuals with normal body weight is connected with higher exposure to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The aim of the study was to evaluate the risk and frequency of occurrence of metabolic syndrome and each of its components among individuals with normal weight. Materials and method. Data were obtained by structured interview, and by measurements of anthropometric factors and blood analyses among 13,172 individuals aged 37–66. The risk of occurrence of metabolic syndrome was analysed in tertiles within the normal range of BMI (18.5–24.9 kg/m2). Results. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 17.27% of individuals with normal weight. A significant increase in the risk of occurrence of metabolic syndrome in females was observed within the second (OR = 2.22; 95% CI: 1.63–3.05) and the third (OR = 3.97; 95% CI: 2.97–5.36) tertiles of normal BMI values. In males, a significantly higher risk of occurrence of metabolic syndrome was noted only in the highest BMI tertile (OR = 2.16; 95% CI: 1.26–3.83), compared to the reference level. Conclusions. A high frequency of occurrence of metabolic syndrome risk factors was observed among individuals with BMI close to the upper cut-off point of the normal range. In order to early diagnose metabolically obese individuals with normal weight it is necessary to check the waist circumference when BMI ≥ 22.5 kg/m2 in females, and BMI ≥ 23.8 kg/m2 in males, where abnormal values should be a signal that further examinations should be performed to determine other risk factors of metabolic syndrome.

Introduction and aim. Given the potential relationship between oxidative stress and fibromyalgia and well-documented antioxidant efficacy of zinc, the present study aimed to determine serum zinc concentration in FM patients as compared to healthy controls, as well as to identify the correlation of serum zinc concentration with the body mass index (BMI) and sleep quality. Material and methods. In this case-control study, 54 fibromyalgia patients were consecutively recruited between October 01, 2021 and December 01, 2021. The control group consisted of 54 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Results. Fibromyalgia group had significantly lower zinc concentration, higher body mass index, and lower sleep quality scores as compared to the healthy control group. The correlation analysis revealed a significantly negative correlation between serum zinc concentration and body mass index and a significantly positive correlation between serum zinc concentration and sleep quality both in fibromyalgia and healthy control groups. Conclusion. Our results both support the hypothesis that low serum zinc concentration plays a role in the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia and indicate that fibromyalgia may lead to weight gain and poor sleep quality, which needs to be confirmed in large-cohort studies.

Opis:
According to American Obesity Medicine Association obesity is a chronic, relapsing, multifactorial, neurobehavioral disease, wherein an increase in body fat promotes adipose tissue dysfunction and abnormal fat mass physical forces, resulting in adverse metabolic, biomechanical, and psychosocial health consequences. Obesity has been renowned as a risk factor of cardiovascular, endocrinological, orthopedic and many other diseases. But for the last two decades, there have been many reports of beneficial influence of overweight or obesity on patients with coronary heart disease. This phenomenon got a name of obesity paradox. It’s existence is a matter of lively discussion in medical world, and even if true, the protecting mechanisms of obesity need much deeper understanding.

Background. Body weight or BMI do not provide any information about the content of muscle tissue, water content, body fat and its distribution in the body. Thyroid dysfunction is associated with a change in body weight, but also its composition regardless of physical activity. Objective. The aim of the study was to compare the body composition of female patients diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease (HD) and the body composition of healthy women who have never been treated before due to thyroid diseases. Materials and methods. The study involved 47 women diagnosed with Hashimoto disease (HD) and 65 women declaring good health. Body mass and height and body composition analysis using bioelectrical impedance analysis were performed using the TANITA multi-frequency segmental body composition analyzer. Variables having a distribution similar to the normal distribution were analyzed by the analysis of variance (ANOVA), otherwise the Kruskal-Wallis test was used. Results. Women with Hashimoto disease were characterized by significantly higher values of body weight, and thus BMI index, than healthy women (respectively 73.64 kg vs. 64.36 kg, p <0.0001; 27.65 kg/m2 vs. 23.95 kg/m2, p <0.001).The problem of excess body fat in the body statistically significantly more often affected women with Hashimoto disease than healthy women (44.7% vs. 13.8%, p <0.001). Conclusions. The results regarding the weight and composition of the patients treated for thyroid disease indicate the need for further in-depth analyses. Even small abnormalities of the thyroid function in the range of reference values may result in the development of many adverse changes in the body.

Introduction and objective. The rapid aging of the human population is an increasing challenge to public health. Effective strategies are required to prevent disability and dependency of the elderly. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of body weight on the prevalence of disability and chronic diseases among 60–80-year-old people living in south-eastern Poland. Materials and method. The study included 1,800 randomly selected people aged 60–80 years living in the Podkarpackie region of south-eastern Poland. Respondents, holders of a – personal identification number (PESEL), were randomly drawn by the Ministry of Interior and Administration (MSWiA) in Poland. The study was conducted in the form of a face-to-face interview at the respondent’s residence. The WHODAS 2.0 questionnaire was used to assess disability and functioning. Socio-demographic data were also collected, and the body weight measured in 5% of the respondents after completion of the study. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistica 10. Results. Respondents with Body Mass Index (BMI)<18.5 and BMI ≥35.0 had significantly higher disability levels than those in the normal weight and overweight categories. The greatest limitations were found in participating in everyday life, household activities, getting along and mobility. There was also a statistically significant relationship between BMI and the number of chronic diseases (p<0.001). Conclusions. When planning a healthcare strategy for people aged 60–80 living in Poland, additional support should be provided to those at risk in the categories of underweight and obesity. The obtained findings indicate that the health behaviour of seniors should be assessed – especially regarding their diet and eating habits, physical activity, and participation in social life – in order to tailor prevention programmes specifically to their needs.

Opis:
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease related to the occurrence of numerous metabolic disorders. Their common feature is hyperglycaemia, caused by insufficient insulin secretion or its malfunction. The World Health Organization states that 346 million people worldwide have diabetes. The studies in adults with type 2 diabetes clearly demonstrate that the change of lifestyle behaviours effectively improves glycemic control. The modifications of lifestyle habits, such as regular physical activity and healthier dietary habits prove to be beneficial for patients. The aim of this study was to determine the factors affecting the level of physical activity in people with diabetes mellitus. Methods: Research material consisted of the data gathered from a diagnostic survey, which was conducted in a form of a questionnaire. The study included 60 people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Results: Unfortunately, the results show that not all of them were active enough, which is so crucial for stabilizing the disease. Conclusions: The diagnosis of diabetes in the respondents resulted in more time being spent by them on physical activity, which resulted in the improvement of diabetes control and the normalization of body weight according to BMI, thus increasing the effectiveness of diabetes treatment and reducing complications. The frequency of the physical activity undertaken by the respondents prior to the disease was not related to gender, however, after the diagnosis, it was dependent on gender

Introduction and aim. Social media addiction is increasing rapidly due to the widespread use of smartphones and the availability of the internet. Also, social media addiction constitutes a risk factor for many physical and mental diseases. We aimed to determine the frequency of social media addiction among obese patients. Material and methods. Adult patients who were admitted to the Diet Clinic of a tertiary healthcare hospital in order to lose weight enrolled in the study. A questionnaire including; Social Media Addiction Scale, body mass index (BMI), and demographic information (age, sex) was applied to all participants. Participants were grouped as obese, overweight, and normal weight. Results. A total of 179 patients (mean age: 34.1±12.6 years) enrolled in the study. No difference in sex was found (45.2% women, 47.3% men). Approximately half of the study population was found to be social media addicts. Participants younger than 45 years of age were found to have higher rates of social media addiction (X2 = 4.26; p<0.05). The frequency of social media addiction was found to increase with increasing BMI (41.7%, 43.6%, and 48%; respectively). Conclusion. Social media addiction is prevalent and it is also more frequent in younger adults. Learning more about social media addiction and its relationship with obesity can decrease its health consequence.

Opis:
Celem badań była próba określenia zależności pomiędzy średnią temperaturą w obrębie wyznaczonych obszarów (R01-R28) a wskaźnikiem masy ciała BMI (Body Mass Index).
Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) is a therapy modality relying on the extreme cold exposure, within the range from -100 °C to -160 °C and duration not exceeding 2-3 minutes. One of the non-invasive methods of objectivization of systemic cryotherapy effects is thermovisual analysis The aim of this study was to assess the temperature changes of specific body regions in subjects exposed to whole--body cryotherapy in reference to the value of the BMI (body mass index). 36 healthy male volunteers aging from 22 to 49 (31,8 +/-3,1), body mass index ranging from 20 to 32 (25,8 +/- 6,2) were once exposed to WBC. Peripheral body temperature was measured by means of thermovision camera before 1 minute, 40 minutes as well as within 3 hours after WBC. Analyzed body thermograms were divided into 28 areas (marked R01-R28). Results suggest that there is no statistically significant correlation between the body mass index and peripheral temperature of selected areas. However, the statistically significant negative correlations between BMI and peripheral temperature values within some selected areas measured just after and 40 minutes after WBC, were noticed.

The aim of this study was to show the correlation between energy, basic nutrients intake and BMI of school children aged 10-12 years, using Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Material and Methods. 169 pupils (69 from Krakow and 100 from Skawina), aged 10-12, participated in these studies. The studies were approved by the Board of Education, school principals and the parents. On the basis of measurements of weight and height, body mass index (BMI) was calculated. 24 h dietary recalls were collected in the spring and autumn of 2006, for 4 selected days per week. Results. Intake of energy, total carbohydrate and fat did not met requirements, but intake of protein was too high. Proper weight, based on BMI values in the population aged 10-12, were found in 74.9% of boys and 81.2% of girls. Deficiencies in body weight occurred in 4.2% and 3.4%, overweight in 15.6% and 10.0% while obesity in 5.3% and 5.4% of respondents. Conclusions. Inverse correlation was found between the implementation of standards for energy and BMI values of children. It was observed positive correlation between the consumption of total and animal protein and BMI value.
Wprowadzenie. Według danych WHO z 2007 roku, w krajach Unii Europejskiej 14 mln dzieci ma nadwagę. Problem otyłości u dzieci należy uznać za jedno z największych wyzwań stojących przed pediatrią XXI wieku. Cel. Celem badań była próba wykazania korelacji pomiędzy pobraniem energii i podstawowych składników odżywczych a wartością BMI (Body Mas Index) dzieci szkolnych w wieku 10-12 lat, przy wykorzystaniu technik analizy statystycznej. Materiał i metody. Badania sposobu żywienia i pomiary antropometryczne przeprowadzono wiosną i jesienią 2006 roku, w dwóch losowo wybranych Szkołach Podstawowych na terenie Krakowa i Skawiny. Wyniki. Właściwą masę ciała stwierdzono u 74,9% chłopców i 81,2% dziewcząt. Niedobory masy ciała stwierdzono odpowiednio u 4,2% i 3,4%, nadwagę u 15,6 i 10,0%, a otyłość u 5,3% i 5,4% badanych. Wnioski. Stwierdzono odwrotną korelację pomiędzy realizacją normy na energię a wartościami BMI badanych dzieci. Równocześnie zaobserwowano dodatnią korelację pomiędzy wielkością spożycia białka roślinnego i zwierzęcego oraz tłuszczów ogółem a wartościami wskaźnika BMI.

Introduction. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive joint condition that leads to joints destruction and complications in the internal organs and significantly affects the a patient’s functional, physical, psychological and social condition. Over the last few years, research into the quality of life (QoL) in people with chronic disease has been conducted to assess the results of treatment. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess QoL in various areas of life in regards to physical and mental functioning, social relations, and environmental influences in people with RA. Material and methods. The study group (subjects with RA) and the control group (subjects without RA) consisted of 48 people each. Subject age ranged from 19 to 68. In order to assess QoL, the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire was used, while socio-demographic data were assessed with a questionnaire developed by the authors. Results. QoL in people with RA was lower than that of healthy individuals. The worst QoL was observed in the physical domain. No statistically significant association was found between BMI and QoL. It was found, however, that subjects with RA and a higher level of physical activity had a better QoL than those with a lower level of physical activity. Conclusion. There was no association between the body mass of RA patients and QoL assessment. However, an association was found between the level of physical activity in people with RA and QoL in the physical and environmental domain.

Inheritance of ABO & Rh blood group in a person is genetically determined and controlled by multiple alleles. Distribution of blood group pattern not only helps to know the pattern of distribution of different blood group alleles in the population as their distribution varies from place to place but also the probable susceptibility to certain health issues. Similarly body mass index (BMI) to some extent genetically controlled and finger print pattern in human being is unique and also genetically controlled. This study is carried out to find out the pattern of distribution of blood group and its relationship with BMI and finger print patterns in the students. It was observed that the blood group “B” is predominantly distributed in both boys and girls followed by “O”, 93% of the students are Rh+ve. The highest distributed allele is IO followed by IB. The blood group “B” is more prevalent in the students with BMI below 24.9 whereas “O” blood group is more in BMI above 24.9 category. Loop type of finger print is the commonest pattern distributed in the student population and the frequency of “B” blood group is more in both loop and the second largest finger print pattern “Whorl”.

Objectives: Night shift work has been linked to some chronic diseases. Modification of lifestyle by night work may partially contribute to the development of these diseases, nevertheless, so far epidemiological evidence is limited. The aim of the study was to explore association between night shift work and lifestyle factors using data from a cross-sectional study among blue-collar workers employed in industrial plants in Łódź, Poland. Material and Methods: The anonymous questionnaire was self-administered among 605 employees (236 women and 369 men, aged 35 or more) - 434 individuals currently working night shifts. Distribution of the selected lifestyle related factors such as smoking, alcohol drinking, physical activity, body mass index (BMI), number of main meals and the hour of the last meal was compared between current, former, and never night shift workers. Adjusted ORs or predicted means were calculated, as a measure of the associations between night shift work and lifestyle factors, with age, marital status and education included in the models as covariates. Results: Recreational inactivity (defined here as less than one hour per week of recreational physical activity) was associated with current night shift work when compared to never night shift workers (OR = 2.43, 95% CI: 1.13-5.22) among men. Alcohol abstinence and later time of the last meal was associated with night shift work among women. Statistically significant positive relationship between night shift work duration and BMI was observed among men (p = 0.029). Conclusions: This study confirms previous studies reporting lower exercising among night shift workers and tendency to increase body weight. This finding provides important public health implication for the prevention of chronic diseases among night shift workers. Initiatives promoting physical activity addressed in particular to the night shift workers are recommended.

The problem of relationships between the ultra-trace element content in a human organism and obesity has been poorly studied thus far. The primary objective of the current research has been to investigate the association between hair ultra-trace element content, body mass index and age in adult women. 1281 adult women participated in the survey. Hair ultra-trace element content (Ag, Au, Ga, Ge, La, Pt, Rb, Sb, Tl, W, Zr) was assessed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry using a NexION 300D+NWR213 apparatus (Perkin-Elmer, USA). No significant association between the hair Ag, Au, Ga, Ge, La, and Pt content and body mass index (BMI) values was observed. The hair Rb levels in normal weight, overweight and obese women exceeded the respective values in underweight females by 33 (p < 0.001), 105 (p < 0.001), and 314% (p < 0.001). The hair Sb content in obese persons was 38 (p < 0.001), 38 (p < 0.001), and 22% (p = 0.022) higher in comparison to the values observed in underweight, normal weight and overweight subjects. A twofold increase in the hair Tl content was observed in obese females in comparison to the underweight (p < 0.001) and normal weight ones (p = 0.037). It has been observed that obese women were characterized by 33% higher hair W levels in comparison to the underweight (p < 0.001) and normal weight group values (p = 0.002). The results of correlation and multiple regression analyses partially confirmed these findings and indicated that hair Rb values were characterized by the closest association with the age and BMI. To our knowledge, it is the first report on a relationship between the hair ultra-trace element content and increased body weight. The data may be used as reference values of the content of ultra-trace element in hair of women with different body mass index. However, additional experimental and clinical studies are required to explore the mechanisms of such an association.

Purpose: To analyze the feasibility and outcomes of robotic rectal cancer surgery in obese patients. Methods: From 2005 to 2012, 101 consecutive rectal cancers operated robotically were enrolled in a prospective database. Patients were stratified into obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) and non-obese (BMI < 30 kg/m2) groups. Operative, perioperative parameters, and pathologic outcomes were compared. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0, while statistical significance was defined as a p value ≤ .05. Results: There were 33 obese patients (mean BMI 33.8 kg/m2). Patients were comparable regarding gender, T stage, and type of operation. Operative time and blood loss were higher in the obese group; only operative time was statistically significant. The conversion rate, length of stay, and anastomotic leak rates were similar. Circumferential margin positivity and lymph node yield were comparable. Disease free and overall survivals at 3 years were 75.8% versus 80.9% and 84.8% versus 92.6%, respectively for obese and non-obese subgroups. Conclusions: Robotic surgery for curative treatment of rectal cancer in the obese is safe and feasible. BMI does not influence conversion rates, length of stay, postoperative complications, and quality of the specimen or survival when the robotic platform is used.

Apart from breast-feeding, socio-economic and biological factors, maternal health also influences the length or distribution of waiting time to conception. The main objective of this paper is to examine the linkages between maternal nutritional status (measured by body mass index-BMI) and postpartum amenorrhea among currently breast-feeding women in India and its region. Further, the probability to remain amenorrheic through simulative approach has been estimated to get better understanding of the impact of maternal nutritional status on postpartum amenorrhea. Using National Family Health Survey-2 data, women who were not pregnant, who were breast-feeding and who were not using any hormonal contraceptives at the time of the survey were included in the analysis. Missing cases for body mass index and child nutritional status were imputed by fitting the linear regression equation. There was no significant difference existing between mean BMI of each region of India before and after imputation of missing cases. The interaction term between maternal nutritional status and duration of breast-feeding (child’s age) was significantly associated with the likelihood of having resumed menstruation after controlling for breast-feeding practices, child nutritional status and socio-economic and demographic covariates. The effect of maternal nutritional status on lactational amenorrhea was not found to be significant when women were breast-feeding since last 12 months except in the northern region of India. However, after 12 months of breast-feeding, the probability of undernourished women to remain amenorrheic was likely to be greater and this trend was highly consistent across all the six regions included in the analysis.

Opis:
Introduction: Living in the age of modern inventions one forgets about one of the best medications for many health problems, which is physical activity. In 2016, Kantar Public (Ministry of Sport and Tourism, 2016) announced that only one in five Poles aged 15-69 had an adequate level of physical activity. A CBOS (Centre for Public Opinion Research) survey conducted in 2014 showed that half of Poles weigh too much. For the development of lifestyle diseases, besides overweight, the wrong lifestyle also contributes (CBOS No. 122/2014). According to the WOBASZ (a multi-center nationwide survey of the health status of the population) survey, only 3% of Polish society is characterized by "an indicator of a healthy lifestyle" (Kwaśniewska, Kaczmarczyk-Chałas, Dziankowska-Zaborszczyk, Kucharczyk, Drygas, 2010). The role and task of physical activity at an early age, as well as at any other stage of life, is very important in the prevention of civilization diseases, which is why it is crucial to monitor it. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between the level of physical activity, state of health and the lifestyle of the academic youth. Material and methods: The research was carried out among students from three universities in Wrocław (n = 629): University of Wrocław (UWr), Wrocław University of Science and Technology (PWr) and Wrocław Medical University (UM). The study used self-constructed questionnaires: physical activity questionnaire, health questionnaire, lifestyle questionnaire. The following statistical analyzes of the results were used: Shapiro-Wilk test, Pearson chi-square test independence, post-hoc test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation coefficient rank (Spearman) and Pearson's correlation coefficient. In the calculations, the package of computer programs STATISTICA v. 9.0 was used. Hypotheses verified at the level of p ≤0.05. Results: Health was the highest-rated one of the studied factors. In addition, it was found that as much as 67.7% of students from all universities represent a very good level of lifestyle. 68.4% of the respondents were characterized by a very good health potential. Research has shown that the physical activity of students from Medical University is at a higher level than students of PWr and UWr. Among the demographic variables, gender turned out to be important (men perform physical activity more often than women, while BMI and place of origin did not affect the physical activity of students). Studies have confirmed the relationship between all major variables (physical activity, lifestyle and health). The increase in the level of physical activity is accompanied by an increase in the level of lifestyle. A positive correlation between lifestyle factor and health condition was also observed.

Objectives The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between the body mass index and sports and physical activities in an unbiased, simple, random sample of teenagers from mid-northeastern Poland. Material and Methods Children and adolescents aged 10–19 years old were surveyed. The Internet-based survey was conducted to collect information on physical activity, leisure time, studying hours, weight, and height. Results Obesity was found to be low in the study population. The overall prevalence of overweight was not higher than 8%. Only 0.6% of participants were underweight. Overall, 68% of them confirmed participating in sports. Boys were frequently more active than girls (> 70% boys and > 60% girls). Participants mostly played soccer, volleyball, handball, or basketball (30.5%); 7% of them practiced martial arts and 16.5% of them participated in swimming. Sports activity significantly influenced body mass index. Obesity was not related to the lack of participation for physical activity in girls but a significant relationship was observed in boys (p < 0.02). The risk of obesity or overweight for inactive teenagers increased 2-fold (p < 0.01). Conclusions We report the overall participation of teenagers from 2 cities in mid-northeastern Poland in sports and physical activities and demonstrate that the lack of statistically significant differences in the body mass index and obesity and overweight is prevalent among boys and girls. Obesity was significantly related to less physical activity in boys, and the likelihood of obesity or overweight increased in inactive teenagers. Opis:
Background. Lifestyle factors are the key determinants of health. Diet exerts the great influence on the weight to height ratio and the body fat percentage. In addition to total energy intake, the type and quality of the diet can also play a role in the etiology of obesity in susceptible individuals. Objective. Aim of this study was to identify the dietary patterns of the Polish population and to determine the associations between these characteristics and body composition parameters. This study presents the clustering of dietary models and body composition to determine the association of these dietary patterns with BMI, physique rating (body type) or visceral fat. Material and methods. The sample consisted of 402 respondents aged 18 to 65. Nutrition models were identified with cluster analysis. Logistic regression modelling with adjustment for confounders was applied. Three dietary-lifestyle patterns were identified. Results. Individuals belonging to the processed food model were at significantly higher risk of overweight and obesity expressed by BMI scores (OR=1.55; 95%CI: 1.26-1.89). The average BMI score was 28.19 ± 3.45 kg/m2 in the processed food model, 23.78 ±2.21 kg/m2 in the control group, and 22.17 ± 2.69 kg/m2 in the healthy nutrition model. Respondents belonging to the processed food model were also characterized by considerably higher body fat percentage (OR=1.89, 95%CI: 1.37-2.34) and higher visceral fat levels (OR=2.12; 95%CI: 1.42-2.34). Frequent intake (at least several times a week) of sweetened carbonated or non-carbonated beverages (p=0.002) and instant foods (p=0.006) were the main factors associated with the risk of higher body fat percentage and higher visceral fat levels. Conclusions. Dietary patterns have been proposed as a solution to investigating the association between food choice and body composition, and such studies focus on analyses of the entire diet, rather than on the intake of individual nutrients or food groups.

Opis:
Background. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide and largely preventable through improving diet quality and other lifestyle factors. In recent years, dietary recommendations have shifted towards diets high in plant-based foods and low in animal-based foods for the prevention of chronic diseases. Objective. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between seeds consumption, lipid profile and body mass index (BMI) in a group of 889 (313 female and 576 male) randomly selected patients hospitalized in the Nitra Cardio Center, Slovakia. Material and Methods. The data necessary for the evaluation the relationship between seeds consumption, lipid profiles and BMI were obtained by a questionnaire method in closed-ended format. Data collection was carried out simultaneously with the anthropometric and biochemical examinations of the respondents ensured by the Nitra Cardio Center. The following parameters were assessed in the blood: total cholesterol (T-C), low-density cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and glucose (GLU). Comparisons between groups were made utilizing one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's post hoc test. Results. Respondents indicated pumpkin seeds as the most commonly consumed seeds (45.19% of women and 53.06% of men) and their preference did not cause changes in lipid profile. Women who consume seeds 1-2 times/month had significantly lower levels of T-C and LDL-C compared to women non-consuming seeds (P < 0.05). In men, we did not observed any changes in lipid profile. The lowest BMI in women was associated with flaxseed preference and in men with sunflower preference. Increasing frequency of seeds consumption of women and men did not cause changes in BMI. Conclusions. Based on beneficial effects of seeds on cardiovascular risk factors, it seems that seeds consumption can be considered as a useful therapeutic approach for reducing lipid profile and body mass index.

Opis:
Background. Changes to the body and its proportions, especially body mass, are frequently and critically assessed by the young according to peer pressure and opinions prevalent in their living and home surroundings, as well as through role models created by the media; particularly those promoting fashions for having a slim figures. The desire to achieve this ideal, is thus responsible for adolescents undertaking a variety of actions/behaviour to regulate their body weight. Objective. To compare healthy lifestyle behaviour in secondary school pupils living in towns and the countryside who have variable weights and heights associated with a self-assessment of body mass. Material and Methods. Subjects were n=1,279 pupils aged 13-15 years, attending secondary school. Those from the countryside environments were n=273 (136 boys and 137 girls), whilst those from urban areas, (towns) were n=1,006 (512 boys and 494 girls). Both weights and heights were measured and the Body Mass Index (BMI) determined. Threshold values for overweight, obesity and underweight, were used to assign BMI groups according to the procedure of Cole et al. Perceptions on how subjects assessed their body weight and remedial actions so arising, were surveyed using the Youth Risk Behaviour Survey (YRBS) questionnaire. The relationships between the factors studied were subjected to log-linear analysis and their significance evaluated by Chi2 test using a significance level of p≤ 0.05. Results. No significant differences were found in the observed frequencies of overweight, obesity and underweight groups between students from the different environments studied. Pupils having a normal body mass constituted 68.9% of total subjects. There were also no differences seen in body weight perception between the various environments. Approximately 70% of subjects properly assessed their own body mass, however the methods of its assessment differed between boys and girls. The main ways adopted for regulating body mass was found to be exercise and diet in both student groups. Significantly more girl pupils living in towns, (54.9%) did physical exercises, aimed at weight reduction, compared to those living in the countryside (43.8%). Conclusions. Only small differences in observed frequencies of height-weight were seen between urban and rural dwelling pupils; the same being true for lifestyle behaviour in controlling weight. Irrespective of residence, two thirds of pupils, aged 13-16 years, correctly assessed their own body mass. In children and adolescents, improving self-awareness of body proportions can be achieved through educating on what the significance of having a healthy BMI is, effective ways of its estimation and safe methods for regulation.
Wprowadzenie. Cel. Celem badań było porównanie zachowań zdrowotnych związanych z postrzeganiem własnej masy ciała uczniów miejskich i wiejskich gimnazjów o zróżnicowanych proporcjach wagowo-wzrostowych. Materiał i metody. Materiał obejmował dane pomiarowe i ankietowe 1279 uczniów w wieku 13-16 lat, z dwóch różnych środowisk: wiejskiego (273 uczniów – 136 chłopców i 137 dziewcząt) i miejskiego (1006 osób – 512 chłopców i 494 dziewcząt). U młodzieży zmierzono wysokość i masę ciała, wyliczono wskaźnik BMI. Z kwestionariusza Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) uzyskano informacje o ocenie własnej masy ciała oraz działaniach podejmowanych w celu jej zmiany. Do ustalenia związków pomiędzy analizowanymi czynnikami, wykorzystano analizę log-liniową. Istotność statystyczną otrzymanych zależności oceniano testem Chi2 na poziomie istotności p≤ 0,05. Wyniki. Około 70% badanych właściwie oceniało własną masę ciała, lecz chłopców i dziewczęta różnił sposób jej oceny.

Opis:
Objectives Only a few studies have been undertaken to analyze the dietary habits of people with cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dietary behaviors of working people who were hospitalized due to experiencing the first acute cardiovascular incident. Material and Methods In the study, the Functional Activity Questionnaire was used. The study was conducted in 2 groups. The first group included all the men hospitalized during 1 year (January–December 2009) in 2 clinics of cardiology, who were professionally active until the first myocardial infarction (MI). It comprised 243 men aged 26–70 years. The reference group consisted of 403 men, blue- and white-collar workers, aged 35–65 years. Results The body mass index of the MI patients was significantly higher (p = 0.006). The frequency of consumption of particular products in the MI group and in the reference group differed significantly for 11 of 21 products. The MI patients significantly less frequently reported the daily consumption of fruit, raw vegetables, cheese, vegetable oils and fish. In this group, the consumption of salty (p = 0.0226) or fatty (p < 0.0001) foods was significantly higher. It was shown that, after adjusting for age, education and the type of work, the daily consumption of fish, salads and cooked vegetables, as well as fruit and vegetable oils, significantly reduced the risk of myocardial infarction. An increased MI risk was, in turn, associated with obesity and preference for fatty foods. Conclusions The authors found that diet significantly modified the MI risk in the examined workers. This indicates that an important aspect of prevention activities among working people should involve education about proper dietary habits. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2019;32(6):853–63

Background. Cardiovascular disease is currently one of the leading causes of death in the world, and a major contributing factor is the increasing incidence of excessive body mass. On the other hand, reduction of body mass in patients who have experienced a myocardial infarction significantly reduces the risk of a second episode of cardiovascular disease. This in turn increases lifespan, improves quality of life, and reduces the number of premature deaths. Material and methods. The study included 41 people (14 women with an average age of 62.5 years and 27 men with an average age of 61.2 years) who experienced a cardiac incident between January 2015 and February 2016 and who were qualified for the second stage of cardiac rehabilitation conducted in accordance with applicable standards. Results. BMI did not correlate with the results of exercise tests. The training improved the fitness and endurance of the subjects and allowed reduction of body mass. Conclusions. After 8 weeks of the second stage of cardiac rehabilitation, there were significant changes in the BMI in patients undergoing the study. Exercise tolerance and physical capacity in all the groups was improved.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Badaniem objęto 41 osób - 14 kobiet (62,5 roku) i 27 mężczyzn (61,2 lat), u których doszło do incydentu kardiologicznego między styczniem 2015 r. a lutym 2016 r., i które zakwalifikowano do drugiego etapu rehabilitacji kardiologicznej prowadzonego zgodnie z obowiązującymi standardami. Wyniki. BMI nie koreluje istotnie z wynikami badań wysiłkowych. Ukończony trening poprawił kondycję i wytrzymałość uczestników oraz pozwolił zmniejszyć masę ciała. Wnioski. Po 8 tygodniach drugiego etapu rehabilitacji kardiologicznej wystąpiły istotne zmiany w BMI u pacjentów poddanych badaniu. Poprawiono tolerancję wysiłkową i wydolność fizyczną we wszystkich badanych grupach.

AACE/ACE diagnostic criteria for obesity
complications of obesity
Opis:
Background: In 2020, Polish experts recommended the use of the guidelines of the American Association of Clini cal Endocrinologist and the American College of Endocrinology (AACE/ACE) in the diagnosis of obesity instead of the 1998 WHO criteria. Thus, obesity can be also diagnosed in patients with BMI 25.0-29.9 if there are complicaitons related to the excess body weight including infertility and hypogonadism, asthma, sleep apnea, gastroesophageal reflux disease, stress urinary incontinence, osteoarthritis and depression. Material and methods: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of obesity diagnosed according to the new criteria in the group of Polish social media users. Results: Among the respondents, 9.7% had a BMI below 18.5 kg/m2, 63.9% declared normal BMI, and 18.8% had BMI 25.0-29.9 kg/m2. The value of BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2, equivalent to the diagnosis of obesity according to WHO, was found in 7.6% of the respondents. For comparison, the prevalence of obesity according to the AACE/ACE criteria was more than twice as high (17.2%, p < 0.05). Conclusions: Concluding, according to the new criteria, more respondents were diagnosed with obesity compared to WHO criteria. The results of the study indicate that the application of the new diagnostic criteria may enable earlier diagnosis and thus earlier treatment of obesity. Samek G, Szulc A, Dardzińska JA. An original survey among ATV riders concerning the conditions in which they lost stability is conducted. The coordinates of the center of gravity of the ATV by riders with different Body Mass Indexes are determined. A simulation program on base mechanic-mathematical model to study the ATV’s motion is used. In this base the critical sideslip velocities and critical lateral overturn velocities of ATV at various riders’ Body Mass Index, curve radius and grip coefficients were calculated. The results show that riders’ Body Mass Index strongly affects critical velocities because of different coordinates of center of gravity.

The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between the BMI of women living in rural areas and their dietary habits, taking into consideration the regularity and frequency of consumption as well as preferences in various groups of foodstuffs. The study included 60 women aged 23 – 69, living in one county. The women were divided into two groups according to nutritional status (BMI): group I with normal body weight and group II with overweight and obesity. Dietary habits were evaluated by using the anonymous and voluntary questionnaire. The questionnaire contained questions concerning dietary preferences. The results were statistically analyzed. The study indicated that a vast majority of overweight and obese women in rural areas prefer fried dishes, red meat and animal fats. However, they do not consume vegetables and fruit frequently enough. Such dietary habits will only increase problems with obesity in rural communities. Thus it is important to start nutrition education as a significant strategy for non-pharmacological treatment of obesity and its health effects.
Do oceny zwyczajowego sposobu żywienia zastosowano metodę anonimowej i dobrowolnej ankiety, dotyczącą głównie preferencji żywieniowych.

Opis:
There is not a region in the world untouched by the obesity epidemic. Once just a problem of wealthy nations, obesity now impacts countries at all economic levels. The night-eating syndrome (NES) consists of evening hyperphagia or nocturnal eating. However, it is not consistently related to elevated BMI and physical activity (Nolan et al., 2012). We have evidence that the prevalence of NES is higher among overweight-related people, than in a general community. Nevertheless, the exact relationship between this syndrome, physical activity and obesity remains unclear. The reasons for the discrepancies found in the literature include varying diagnostic criteria and a wide range of study population characteristics. The aim of our cross sectional study, that is part of VEGA project “Selected risk factors of obesity and its prevention by physical activity” No.1/1343/12, was to investigate the relationship between the night-eating pattern, physical activity (PA) and BMI on a sample of university freshmen and fresh-women (774 males / 1142 females) with a mean age of 21,46 years (SD = 2.33).We found positive association between eating late, physical activity and BMI. However, we recognized some differences between sexes in physical activity and eating habits.
Zespół nocnego jedzenia (zespół odżywiania nocnego NES – night eating syndrom) obejmuje późne (hyperfagie) i nocne jedzenie. Jednak dokładny związek pomiędzy NES i aktywnością fizyczną i otyłością pozostaje nieokreślony.

Opis:
Background. Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in Poland, where many factors have been found responsible such as obesity, smoking cigarettes and a lack of physical activity. Amongst these are also nutritional determinants, which principally include the amount and types of dietary fatty acids consumed, coupled with low intakes of antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables. Objectives. To assess nutrition in male subjects suffering from cardiovascular disease. Materials and methods. Subjects were 95 men with cardiovascular disease aged 30-90 years. Nutrition was assessed by weighed food records over 3 days. The calorific dietary intake, as well as the proportions of calories derived from dietary protein, carbohydrates and fat were also calculated; this included vitamins and minerals. Results. Only 18% subjects had a normal Body Mass Index (BMI); the rest falling into the overweight or obesity ranges. The average dietary calorific daily intakes were abnormally low at 1582 kcal/person, however the proportions of fat and protein making up this value were too high; respectively at 36% and 19%. The average daily consumption per person of cholesterol, fibre and vegetables were respectively 251 mg, 19 g and 608 g. A significant number were deficient in dietary minerals (eg. calcium, potassium and magnesium) as well as vitamins; especially A, B1 and Br Conclusions. Persons suffering from cardiovascular disease require a diet with sufficient calories for their body needs. It is also vital that the dietary sources of energy are properly balanced between protein, carbohydrates and fats as well as having appropriate intakes ofbothvitamins and minerals (eg. calcium, magnesium and potassium).
Wprowadzenie. Choroby sercowo-naczyniowe to najczęstsza przyczyna zgonów w Polsce. Na rozwój tych schorzeń wpływa wiele czynników, m.in.: otyłość, palenie papierosów czy brak aktywności fizycznej. Spośród czynników żywieniowych do najważniejszych przyczyn należą ilość i rodzaje kwasów tłuszczowych, zbyt niskie spożycie błonnika pokarmowego oraz owoców i warzyw, a przez to przede wszystkim witamin antyoksydacyjnych. Cel. Celem badań była ocena sposobu żywienia grupy mężczyzn z chorobami sercowo-naczyniowymi. Materiał i metody. Badanie przeprowadzono wśród 95 mężczyzn z chorobami sercowo-naczyniowymi w wieku od 30 do 90 lat. Oceny sposobu żywienia dokonano na podstawie 3-dniowego bieżącego notowania. Obliczono wartość energetyczną całodziennych racji pokarmowych badanych a także udział białek, węglowodanów i tłuszczu w dostarczaniu energii. Określono także wielkość spożycia wybranych składników mineralnych i witamin. Wyniki. Wnioski.

Opis:
Background Sit-stand workstations are available for office work purposes but there is a dearth of quantitative evidence to state benefits for lower limb outcomes while using them. And there are no guidelines on what constitutes appropriate sit/stand time duration. The primary aim of this study has been to compare muscle activity and perceived discomfort in the lower extremity during various combinations of sit/stand time duration associated with a sit-stand workstation separately and to evaluate the effects of the sit-stand workstation on the lower extremity during the text entry task. Material and Methods During the 5 days, all participants completed a 2-h text entry task each day for various sit/stand time duration combinations as follows: 5/25 min, 10/20 min, 15/15 min, 20/10 min, 25/5 min. Lower extremity muscular exposure of 12 male and 13 female participants was collected at 8 sites by surface electromyography and body discomfort was calculated by a questionnaire under those 5 conditions. Results Results have demonstrated that lower extremity muscle activity has been significantly varied among the 5 sit/stand time duration groups. Perceived level of discomfort (PLD) has not differed significantly for 9 out of 10 body parts. Conclusions The muscle activity of the thigh region was influenced by sit/stand time duration significantly. Ergonomic exposures of lower extremity when using a sit-stand workstation were increased, particularly during the long time standing posture. Results indicate that body mass index (BMI) and gender were not significant factors in this study. Combination of sit/stand time duration 25/5 min appears to show positive effects on relief of muscle exposure of back of thigh in the shifts of sitting and standing work position. Purpose: Etiology of hallux valgus (HV) remains unclear and effective treatments and prophylaxis for this condition are lacking and conclusions of researches concerning HV are inconsistent. Recognition of the function-structure interrelation in foot at the early stage of valgus alignment of first metatarsophalangeus joint (1stMTPJ) would help explain the etiology of HV. Methods: The frequency of weight-shifting patterns during walking and the body mass index (BMI) were assessed relative to goniometric measurements of the 1stMTPJ angle in adolescents. Weight-shifting patterns were identified with a plantar pressure analysis, performed with the GaitlineMaxline Distance method. Results: As the 1stMTPJ angle widened, the frequency distributions of identified weight-shifting patterns became increasingly lopsided, due to the favoring or disfavoring of one pattern at the expense of the other. The two sexes showed opposite trends in the weight-shifting patterns that were favored/disfavored, relative to participants with a 0º 1stMTPJ angle. The clear predominance of a central-shift pattern, at the expense of a medial-shift, occurred with the largest (20º) 1stMTPJ angle among girls. Additionally, the BMI distributions associated with 1stMTPJ angle characteristics showed opposite trends between the sexes. Conclusions: Valgus alignment of 1stMTPJ among adolescents were associated with limitations in weight-shifting freedom of the foot during walking, that could be involved in maintaining balance. An 1stMTPJ angle of 20º, where distinct limitations were observed, might serve as a criterion of HV pathology.

Opis:
Background. Adequate nutrition and nutritional status during pregnancy are essential for mother’s health and foetus development. Due to increased demands, pregnant women are vulnerable to inadequate nutritional status and paradoxically it may also affect overweight women. Objective. The aim of the study was to evaluate energy and nutrients intake in the group of pregnant women in relation to nutritional standards and pre-pregnancy BMI. Material and methods. The study included 90 women, during the third trimester of pregnancy, recruited from Warsaw antenatal classes. The anthropometric data gathered in the research were used to calculate BMI value before pregnancy. Pre-pregnancy BMI was categorised as: normal weight (BMI=18.5-24.9 kg/m2, n=47) and overweight (BMI ≥25.0 kg/m2, n=43). The assessment of women’s nutrition was based on 3-days dietary record. Due to heterogeneous variances, differences between groups were assessed using Mann Whitney U test, p<0.05 was considered as significant. Results. The mean intake of energy, protein, fat and carbohydrates in the overweight women were significantly higher than in healthy weight women (p<0.05). Most of the healthy weight women did not reach EAR standard for vitamin D (79.5%), whereas in overweight group it was 41.3%. Conclusions. Despite the fact that intakes of energy and all nutrients were higher in overweight women than in normal weight ones, we observed that women in both groups had risk of insufficient supply of energy, iodine, potassium and vitamin D. For this reason, accurate nutritional assessment should be an integral part of obstetric care.
Wprowadzenie. Cel. Celem badania była ocena spożycia energii i składników odżywczych w grupie kobiet ciężarnych z prawidłową i nadmierną masa ciała, w odniesieniu do norm żywienia. Materiał i metody. Do badania włączono 90 kobiet w 3 trymestrze ciąży. Uzyskane dane antropometryczne wykorzystano do wyliczenia przed ciążowego wskaźnika masy ciała (BMI).

Opis:
Background. Within the last few decades, the prevalence of obesity has increased rapidly throughout the world. Epidemiological studies indicate a relationship of several types of cancer with obesity. The study aimed was to analyse the relation between body mass index (BMI) and the risk of developing gastric cancer. Material and methods. A multicenter case-control study was conducted between 2010 and 2015 in Poland. The study included 152 patients with gastric cancer and 152 patients with normal results of esophagogastroduodenoscopy performed in the same period and matched for age, education and sex. BMI was calculated by using patients’ height and weight. An analysis of environmental factors associated with the risk of gastric cancer was performed. Results. The group with the diagnosis of gastric cancer was characterised by significantly higher regular consumption of alcohol and was found to include a higher percentage of smokers compared to the control group. In a subgroup analysis, it was found that there was a significantly higher body mass index among both men and women diagnosed with gastric cancer. A relation between gastric cancer and both overweight (BMI 25.0-29.9 kg / m²) and obesity (BMI≥30 kg / m²) was established. In a multivariate analysis, this was an independent risk factor for gastric cancer. Conclusions. We suggest that BMI should be considered as an independent risk factor for developing gastric adenocarcinoma, which should lead to further research leading to the development of recommendations for the prevention of gastric cancer for people with high BMI.
Wprowadzenie. W ciągu ostatnich kilku dekad występowanie nadwagi i otyłości wzrasta gwałtownie. Badania epidemiologiczne wskazują na związek kilku typów nowotworów złośliwych z nadwagą i otyłością. Celem naszej pracy była analiza relacji pomiędzy wskaźnikiem masy ciała (BMI) a ryzykiem zachorowania na gruczołowego raka żołądka. Materiał i metody. Wieloośrodkowe badanie kliniczno-kontrolne zostało przeprowadzone w latach 2010 do 2015 w województwie pomorskim w Polsce. Do badania włączono 152 pacjentów z rakiem żołądka i 152 pacjentów z prawidłowymi wynikami ezofagoduodendoskopii wykonywanymi w tym samym okresie. Przypadki zostały dopasowane pod względem wieku, wykształcenia i płci. BMI obliczano na podstawie wzrostu i wagi pacjenta. Dodatkowo przeprowadzono analizę czynników środowiskowych mogących mieć związek z ryzykiem zachorowania na gruczołowego raka żołądka. Wyniki. W grupie z rozpoznaniem raka żołądka stwierdzano wyraźnie wyższą częstość regularnego spożywania alkoholu i wyższy odsetek osób palących w porównaniu do grupy kontrolnej. Wnioski. Sugerujemy, że BMI należy traktować jako niezależny czynnik ryzyka rozwoju gruczolakoraka żołądka, co powinno prowadzić do dalszych badań prowadzących do opracowania zaleceń dotyczących zapobieganiu i wczesnemu wykrywaniu raka żołądka u osób z wysokim BMI.

Introduction and objective. Growing evidence suggests that obesity is an important contributor to the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The relationship between obesity and CKD is complex and not completely understood, and the best anthropometric index of obesity in predicting CKD is controversial. This study aimed to determine the best anthropometric index of obesity in predicting CKD in a population of elderly women. Materials and methods. Anthropometric indexes of obesity including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WheiR) and waist-to-hip-ratio (WHR), were obtained in 730 selected females. Biochemical measurements including blood glucose, lipid profile, and 2-h postprandial blood glucose were performed. GFR was estimated by using CKD-EPI equation. Results. The prevalence of CKD stage ≥ 3 was 12.2%. Overweight and obesity was found in 50% and 36% of participants, respectively. Increased central fat distribution, as defined by WheiR, WC and WHR, was found in 89.6%, 91.7% and 89.4% individuals, respectively. Univariate linear regression analysis showed positive correlations between CKD and age (p<0.001), BMI (p<0.001), WC (p<0.001), WHR (p=0.007), WheiR (p<0.001), diabetes (p=0.002), as well as triglicerydes (p=0.031), and negative correlation between CKD and HDL level (p=0.017). Multivariable analysis demonstrated that hypertension, diabetes, WC and WheiR were independent predictors of CKD. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve was best for WheiR (0.647), followed by WC (0.620), BMI (0.616), and WHR (0.532). Conclusions. Abdominal obesity is an important predictor of CKD. Of commonly used anthropometric parameters of obesity WheiR ≥ 0.6 is particularly associated with CKD in elderly females.

It is well known that our internal state affects our ability to perform everyday tasks. Some studies [6], [17] found that the admonition to live for a present is more important than we imagined. A human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind [13]. The objective of the current study was to determine how living for a present relates to quality of life and functional fitness of senior cohorts (n = 38 F. mean age = 75,6 years (SD ± 9.4) that exercise regularly. Older adults completed a functional fitness test battery, quality of life and living for a present questionnaire. Living for a present was associated with age of participants, quality of life and BMI. No statistical significance was found between living for a present, functional fitness and medication use. The results support the role of living for a present as a correlate of age, BMI and quality of life. These data substantiate that living in a present could serve as an important course for better existence. In any means our study is not conclusive. Further study are needed to clarify this complex issue as living for a present no doubt represents.

Several factors have been associated with the presence of abnormally high plantar foot pressure including: (i) increased body weight, (ii) foot structure and (iii) walking strategy. It is predicted that the biomechanics of the foot is influenced by the structure of the foot, primarily the Medial Longitudinal Arch. The objective of this study was to examine if Body Mass Index and the foot arch have a direct effect on dynamic peak plantar pressure for healthy subjects. Following a clinical lower limb examination, the Tekscan HR mat was utilised for this study, plantar pressure was profiled at specific events during stance phase of gait including heel strike, midstance and toe off. Results indicated to the preferable normal arch as this produced a low plantar pressure distribution in all cases. The 2nd and 3rd metatarsal head region recorded the highest pressure for all arch types during dynamic analysis. The lowest pressure for the normal and overweight BMI was at toe-off. While the obese BMI group showed highest pressure during toe-off. The obese BMI flat arch subcategory indicated to functional ambulation differences. Future work involves comparing this healthy database to a demographically matched diabetic group.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to examine the influence of selected health behaviours of women living in the country, in one county on incidence of overweight and obesity. The study indicated that 50% of women living in the country were overweight or obese and that the normal value of BMI decreased with age. It was found that overweight and obese women suffered from arterial hypertension and diabetes more frequently. Women living in the country still did not attach significance to nutritional and energy value of purchased food products. It proves that there is little awareness of rational nutrition in the rural community and little interest in health effects connected with an excessive intake of specific food. Overweight and obesity did not motivate women living in the country to take more exercise. Women attempted to lose weight only through a diet without increased energy expenditure.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between age, aerobic capacity (VO2 max) and other health indicators among 3 rescue groups. The type of training and the subjective perception of physical fitness obtained via the Assessment Questionnaire of Physical Fitness were also analysed. To obtain VO2 max, 37 firefighters, 22 lifeguards and 59 mine rescue workers had a treadmill test. Their body mass index and body fat percentage were also calculated. The results show a significant decline in VO2 max of the older participants, which affects the effectiveness of rescue work. Furthermore, the training of all groups was inconsistent and based on individual needs. Variable training and the decline in VO2 max with age affected the effectiveness of the rescue tasks of each group.

Opis:
Physical activity is considered to have influence on anthropometry and blood pressure. It is supposed that regular physical activity leads to better body composition and lowers blood pressure. The aim of the study: Evaluation of influence of regular physical activity offered by sports school on body composition and blood pressure in 14-year-old children. Material and methods: Twenty-five children from sports school participated in the study. Children were examined twice – interval was 12 months. Changes of anthropometric values, body composition and blood pressure values were analysed. Results: In whole group increase of systolic blood pressure was observed (p < 0.05), mainly in boys. Diastolic blood pressure didn’t change. Body composition changed negatively in whole group: fat mass increased (13% vs. 20%, p < 0.05), gain of fat mass was higher in girls (6% vs. 3%, p < 0.05). There was significant increase of BMI percentile in girls (37 vs. 49, p < 0.05), in boys this parameter didn’t change. Conclusion: Increased physical activity offered by sports school doesn’t improve nutritional status of 13–14-year-old girls and boys, whose body fat massincrease. School sport activity doesn’t reduce blood pressure in 13–14-year-old children, according to age standards. Centile values of boys systolic blood pressure were even higher.

Opis:
In postmenopausal women various psychosomatic disorders concerning mood and appetite occur. The reason is not only estrogen deficiency, but also other hormones and neurotransmitters. The aim of the study was to estimate serotonin and melatonin levels and myoelectrical activity and gastric motor in postmenopausal women in relation to their nutritional status. The study was conducted in three 30-person groups of women: premenopausal (group I), postmenopausal with a normal body mass (group II), postmenopausal overweight (group III). Compared with group I, in group II there were no significant differences, while in group III serotonin level was lower respectively 156.5±40.2 ng/ml and 83.4±32.5 ng/ml (p<0.01), as well as the percentage of normogastria – 82.9±5.6% and 66.9±8.2 (p<0.05) and gastric emptying half-time 43.6±14.7 min and 27.4±12.2 min (p<0.01). Moreover, a negative correlation between body mass index and serotonin (r = -0.4744) and melatonin (r = -0.7146) levels was observed. The study results indicate the involvement of serotonin and melatonin in the pathogenesis of eating disorders in postmenopausal women.
