Opis:
Sonification is defined as presentation of information by means of non-speech audio. In assistive technologies for the blind, sonification is most often used in electronic travel aids (ETAs) – devices which aid in independent mobility through obstacle detection or help in orientation and navigation. The presented review contains an authored classification of various sonification schemes implemented in the most widely known ETAs. The review covers both those commercially available and those in various stages of research, according to the input used, level of signal processing algorithm used and sonification methods. Additionally, a sonification approach developed in the Naviton project is presented. The prototype utilizes stereovision scene reconstruction, obstacle and surface segmentation and spatial HRTF filtered audio with discrete musical sounds and was successfully tested in a pilot study with blind volunteers in a controlled environment, allowing to localize and navigate around obstacles.

The ability of some humans to echolocate has become widely known primarily due to a small number of famous expert echolocators who are capable of extraordinary feats. However, a lesser-known fact is that all humans exhibit this skill unconsciously and can learn it relatively quickly and implicitly through repeated practice. In our experiments we tested groups of 12 blind and 14 sighted untrained participants in a simple echolocation test - localizing a 1m x 2m vertical wall at distances between 1 and 3 meters using 10 different types of sounds as the source signals for the echolocation attempts. There were significant differences between the participant groups and between some of the tested sounds. Although the groups were small, a clear difference was also observed between the experienced totally blind participants and the legally blind visually impaired participants that had residual light sensitivity. From the compared sounds 3 kHz and 4 kHz synthetic percussion sounds, pink and blue noise were among the sources that led to the highest chances of correctly guessing the obstacle’s direction and distance.

Opis:
The presented review discusses recent research on human echolocation by blind and sighted subjects, aiming to classify and evaluate the methodologies most commonly used when testing active echolocation methods. Most of the reviewed studies compared small groups of both blind and sighted volunteers, although one in four studies used sighted testers only. The most common trial procedure was for volunteers to detect or localize static obstacles, e.g., discs, boards, or walls at distances ranging from a few centimeters to several meters. Other tasks also included comparing or categorizing objects. Few studies utilized walking in real or virtual environments. Most trials were conducted in natural acoustic conditions, as subjects are marginally less likely to correctly echolocate in anechoic or acoustically dampened rooms. Aside from live echolocation tests, other methodologies included the use of binaural recordings, artificial echoes or rendered virtual audio. The sounds most frequently used in the tests were natural sounds such as the palatal mouth click and finger snapping. Several studies have focused on the use of artificially generated sounds, such as noise or synthetic clicks. A promising conclusion from all the reviewed studies is that both blind and sighted persons can efficiently learn echolocation.

This paper deals with the specific character of cognitive functioning of blind children and adolescents with respect to perception, attention, memory, information processing and Theory of Mind. It also discusses the impact of this specificity on foreign language learning. Empirical research on the influence of visual impairment on cognitive functions is discussed, and foreign language learning is presented from the viewpoint of theories which look upon this process as a result of cognitive operations, oriented towards developing communicative competence. The situation of a blind learner in a foreign language class is discussed both from the perspective of challenges a blind student has to face and also from the perspective of opportunities to diminish the gap between the blind and the sighted thanks to the content included in foreign language textbooks.

Opis:
This article explores the role of an international open society of mental health stakeholders in raising awareness of values and thereby reducing the vulnerability of psychiatry to abuse. There is evidence that hidden values play a key role in rendering psychiatry vulnerable to being used abusively for purposes of social or political control. Recent work in values-based practice aimed at raising awareness of values between people of different ethnic origins has shown the importance of what we call “values auto-blindness” – a lack of awareness of one’s own values as a key part of our background “life-world” – in driving differential rates of involuntary psychiatric treatment between ethnic groups. It is argued that the vulnerability of psychiatry to abuse stems from values auto-blindness operating on the judgments of rationality implicit in psychiatric diagnostic concepts. Acting like a “hall of mirrors,” an international open society of mental health stakeholders would counter the effects of values auto-blindness through enhanced mutual understanding of the values embedded in our respective life-worlds across and between the diverse perspectives of its constituents. The article concludes by noting that a model for the required open society is available in the contemporary interdisciplinary field of philosophy and psychiatry.

The story about a man born blind in the Gospel according to John is an example of Jesus’ care of a man. Jesus noticed a difficult situation of the blind man and gave him sight. He “spat on the ground and made mud with the salive and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (Jn 9:6-7). The blind man performed his orders and when he came back he was able to see. He gains first his sight and then increasing insight as he progresses from referring to “the man called Jesus” whose he does not know (cf. Jn 9:11-12), to declaring him to be a prophet (cf. Jn 9:17), then one sent from God (cf. Jn 9:33), and finally confessing him as Son of Man and Lord (cf. Jn 9:37-38). The Pharisees by contrast assert that Jesus is not from God (cf. Jn 9:16) and that he is a sinner, and deny the miracle (cf. Jn 9:24). The cured man become a witness and he was talking about the miracle to those who knew him, neighbours and Pharisees. The Pharisees drove him out because he was saying that Jesus came from God. Jesus asked the cured man if he believed in the Son of Man? He answered that he did and he worshipped him. Jesus led him up to believe in the Son of Man. Jesus wants people to come to him for help and he leads them out to faith. Jesus wants us to believe in him as God who can help us.

Opis:
Signs and wonders in John’s theology play significant role because they may lead to true and lasting faith. Jesus said to the royal official: “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe” (J 4,48). In John’s Gospel signs and miracles performed by Jesus allowed to believe in him as a prophet, a man who is from God, the Messiah, the Son of God. Descending of the Holy Spirit on Jesus was for John the Baptist a sign that Jesus is The Son of God. The miracle of changing water into wine revealed glory of Jesus and caused that his disciples believed in him. Knowledge of Jesus about sinful life a Samaritan woman became for her a sign which led to acknowledge Jesus as a prophet. Jesus made her aware that he was Christ, the Messiah. The presence of Jesus among Samaritans and preaching his word made other believe in Jesus and recognize him as the Savior of the world. A sign of healing a royal official’s son showed the necessity of believing in his words. A miracle of feeding Five Thousand caused the crowd to look for him. People acknowledged Jesus as a prophet. A miracle of healing a man blind from birth made him believe in Jesus as the Son of Man. A resurrection of Lazarus became a sign which raised faith among the Jews who had seen what Jesus did. The chief priests and the Pharisees saw signs made by Jesus but they did not believe in him. People who faced signs and miracles and take dialogue with Jesus, come to believe in him. Jesus made miracles which were the answers for human poverty, misery and faith. Each of us has to take one’s own decision through believing in Jesus as the Messiah, God’s Son and you may have life in his name.

This article is based on a case study conducted in an Italian primary school where the interactions between a sightless girl (named Jasmine, aged 8) and her classmates were extensively observed. The initial aim was to understand and describe the problems encountered by the sightless pupil, who acted in a social, organizational and physical environment which was not designed for handicapped people. However, other theoretical issues emerged during the research. The main finding was that sightlessness seems socially and organizationally constructed before it becomes a biological/physical handicap. The organizational processes through which the blindness is slowly and routinely constructed were extensively described.

Opis:
Artykuł dotyczy powieści hebrajskiej Tomasza Augusta Olizarowskiego, która powstawała w dwu etapach. Pierwsza część pt. Softy. Powieść hebrajska. Pieśń 1–2 została napisana w latach 1836–1845, a wydana w 1852 r.; druga, zatytułowana Samson. Poemat hebrajski, ukazała się po raz pierwszy w 1873 r. Stanowią one integralne całostki i każdą z nich można traktować osobno. Cedrowa, prorocka harfa o złotych i srebrnych strunach przynależy do sfery sacrum i współkreuje prezentowaną w poemacie historię.
The article pertains to a Hebrew novel by Tomasz August Olizarowski, which was written in two stages. The first part entitled Sophet’s. A Hebrew Novel. Song 1–2 was written between 1836 and 1845 and published in 1852; the second, entitled Samson. A Hebrew Poetic Novel, was first published in 1873. They constitute integral units and each can be treated separately. They are linked by the title character and his story. The figure of Samson, as created by Olizarowski, is a complex and original construct. It was shaped from biblical archetypes, which we have divided into two categories: poetic language and artefact (object). In this sketch, we have analysed the second of the indicated categories: the shaping of the character in connection with his main attribute (the harp), which is an important archetypal motif. The cedar, prophetic harp with golden and silver strings is part of the sacred and co-creates the story presented in the poetic novel. Based on this artefact, the poet introduces important Romantic motifs: song, the prophetic (and poetic) word and the concept of the Logos. The combination of the figure of Sophet with this archetypal instrument allows us to relate it to the figures of Orpheus and Christ, as well as to recognise in it the universal figure of the bard, the singer (Homer, Oisin, Bojan).

The anal-ysis included is focused on a merciful lie, a lie caused by pity, which determines significantly the course of action and the protagonists’ lives, saves their health or even life; a lie that results from good and love for other people.

Opis:
The article concerns the way in which the eye topos functions in Paweł Hertz’s Sedan and Kazimierz Brandys’ The Wooden Horse, works representing Polish literature of retribution written in the 1940s. The role of the process of seeing is interpreted by means of the category of melancholy, and the protagonists in these works are presented as melancholics. Standing in front of a window or in the quiet of European museums, members of the intelligentsia do not so much focus on passive contemplation but rather protest against History. The desire to constantly use the eyes has an existential and political sense. Recognition of the phenomenon of a melancholic gaze in the literature of retribution enriches the traditional interpretation of this trend in literature by lending it a new context and allowing rehabilitation of the intellectuals portrayed in it.

Jadwiga Stańczakowa was a blind writer, who was more known as a friend of Miron Białoszewski than for her own literary work. Meanwhile, she is the author of several books of poetry, autobiographical prose and a diary. Miron Białoszewski was certainly master for her, thanks to him she began to write about his own blindness. Although that all her work was connected with Białoszewski, it is worth to hear her own voice, especially in the context of disability studies. In this article the author is trying to bring out the poetess of the Białoszewski’s shadows. First of all, the author pointed out that blindness was a magical experience treated as a basis of lirycs. But the dysfunction of sight has also been a cause of recurring depressions. The writing during this ‘double disease’ was particularly difficult and made sense of self-therapy.
