Opis:
The article author takes up again the issue of Polish‑Portuguese bilingualism and recalls his research conducted in Brazil in the mid‑nineties of the 20th century. He begins with a presentation of the research methodology and its territorial conditioning. He presents bilingualism as a group phenomenon, characteristic for most Brazilians of Polish descent (the author of the article highlights the differences between big cities, small towns and colonies). Next, he recalls the ways of becoming bilingual, which enables him to analyse individual cases of bilingualism and its variability over time. The article concludes with the three case studies described in the monograph published in 2003. The author presents successes achieved by the described people due to their knowledge of Polish language.

How do bilingual children talk about localisation in space? Example of Polish-French young bilinguals The paper analyzes the data collected during recorded interviews with Polish-French bilingual children living in Poland, aged from 4 to 8. The task given to the participants was to describe spatial situations in a series of images by answering the researcher’s question where is X? The answers were supposed to follow the BLC (Basic Locative Construction) pattern. Given locative constructions were then transcribed in CHAT format and analysed in order to find out what types of mistakes appear in children’s locative utterances and if those mistakes might be related to the children’s age, level of proficiency in French or to their bilingualism.

Research on the representation of emotion in human memory has focused on the ways in which words that label an emotion (e.g., love, joy) or represent emotional components (e.g., death, butterfly) are learned, stored, and retrieved from memory. The current work reviews the ways in which these types of words have been distinguished from concrete and abstract words, the types of methodologies used to distinguish among word groups, and the ways in which these words are automatically processed in the bilingual speaker. While emotion words may be more readily processed and retrieved when they appear in the first language, other word types that are neutral with regards to arousal and valence may be processed similarly across languages. The current work also illustrates the ways in which this knowledge is important in advancing theories of language and cognition, attention, perception, and mental health. Future directions are discussed that elucidate the further applications of these interesting lines of research.

Cognitive performance declines with age following different trajectories. The cognitive trade-off, however, between age and cognitive reserve is still not clear. In addition, bilingualism has been thought to play a role in delaying cognitive decline by affecting cognitive control outside the scope of language. However, the effect has been unreliably reproduced and without exploring sufficiently the differences between cognitive functions that govern language control. In the current study 112 adults varying in age, level of bilingualism and cognitive reserve, completed a modified version of the Simon task, which engaged the mechanisms of interference suppression and shifting. Using ex-Gaussian analysis, the Simon effect was replicated in the normal component and the shifting effect was found in the exponential. Additional linear mixed-effects model analysis showed a significant “negative” effect of bilingualism on inhibition and a “positive” effect of cognitive reserve on shifting, both independent of age. Age affected similarly the speed of engagement of both executive functions irrespectively of language or cognitive background. Implications of a bilingual disadvantage and a beneficial effect of cognitive reserve during ageing are discussed.

Early childhood bilingualism, natural bilingualism, and multilingualism, which occurs more often than ever before, are widely discussed in the secondary literature. Bilingualism entails acquiring a new identity and induces a change in linguistic thinking. This article contributes to the studies concerning the methods and strategies that are undertaken by such families that either raise or aim at raising a bilingual child; moreover, it puts forward a case study of a boy who is 2 years and 9 months old. In the introduction, the essential issues of raising a bilingual child are presented with a special emphasis put on the parents’ attitude towards bilingual education and their conviction of its underlying benefits for the boy. The empirical part of this article focuses on language proficiency and communication competences, and their assessment.

The aim of the article is to show the Polish-Brazilian evolution of bilingualism throughout ages. his paper shows different definitions and types of bilingualism, taking into consideration a comparison between the Polish and Portuguese language. Furthermore, I present a review of 150 years of Polish citizens’ history in Brazil. It presents their difficulties and the approach of the Brazilian government from the 19th to the 20th century. The most significant  subject are Polish schools and organizations. Their history shows how the command of Polish and Portuguese changed throughout ages. There were different conditions, affecting the command of languages in the Polish Diaspora, such as the familial approach or access to Polish culture. I also mention which organizations and people had the biggest impact on Polish citizens in Brazil. I also describe the existing attitude to both cultures and languages in Polish communities. Apart from that, I try to understand the identity and acquaintance of Polish culture nowadays and show actions as a resultof which Polish language and history are promoted nowadays.

However, the role that bilingualism plays in adulthood and late adulthood is underestimated in the literature. At this stage of life, some people may develop the first symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases, mainly associated with memory and communication disorders. The article briefly introduces the most common causes of dementia symptoms and then discusses bilingualism in several, closely related aspects. The publication contains information on the impact of bilingualism on delaying the symptoms of dementia and triggers of this phenomenon. The creativity of bilinguals and the unique impact of bilingualism on working memory and executive control are addressed.

International standards in speech-language pathology provide for different formulas for the diagnosis of multilingual (including bilingual) children. One of them is RIOT (Review, Interaction, Observation, Test), based on the ethnographic study of the patient/client in various contexts, analysis of the collected documentation and testing of linguistic competence. This work is an example of the application of the RIOT formula in the study of a bilingual, Polish-Russian girl B. from Belarus. This allowed for a multi-context analysis of the child’s bilingualism, culminating in a diagnosis of Russian and Polish language subsystems.

Sentential context is believed to have particularly robust effects on the processing of foreign-accented speech (Lev-Ari 2015). However, recent neurolinguistic studies investigating the relation between non-native speech and semantic predictability suggest that anticipation mechanisms are, in fact, hampered during the processing of foreign accents (Romero-Rivas et al. 2016). The current study is an attempt to shed more light on this issue and establish whether the mechanisms responsible for categorical template matching remain active during the processing of non-native speech. The study investigated neural reactions towards high cloze probability template endings (i.e., the endings of fixed phrases selected in a pre-test) and their unexpected counterparts. 120 Polish sentences were recorded by a native Polish speaker and a non-native (L1 Ukrainian) speaker of Polish in order to investigate the reactions towards an easily recognizable foreign accent. The brain activity of 28 monolinguals (L1 Polish) was recorded during the EEG sessions. In native-accented speech, violations of high cloze probability items resulted in a broadly distributed negativity followed by a P600 effect. No comparable effects were observed in the case of foreign-accented speech. These results are compatible with previous findings (Hanulíková et al. 2012; Romero-Rivas et al. 2016) as they confirm that linguistic anticipatory and reanalysis processes are hampered in the case of non-native speech.

This paper provides an overview of linguistic studies of multilingualism. In the beginning of this paper, a brief survey on attitude to the phenomenon of multilingualism and linguistic diversity throughout history is given, which shows that multilingualism has actually been natural to most human societies. Despite this fact, multilingual capacities of individuals and societies had generally been neglected in linguistic studies before the second half of the 20th century, with linguists having investigated mainly individual languages as isolated systems. Sociolinguists and linguistic anthropologists were among first people to have realized the importance of avoiding of monolingual prejudices. With recent increased attention towards this phenomenon, multilingualism is today studied and explored in various linguistic disciplines. A large number of terms and fields of research shows that the study is gradually emerging as a new discipline, although the field would benefit from more common terms. Following the definition and delimitation of the basic terms related to multilingualism, perspective for future research is given.

Der Band enthält die Abstracts ausschließlich in englischer Sprache.
The visibility of bilingualism and multilingualism has increased in the urban landscape of major cities, a phenomenon commonly attributed to a globalized world economy, increasingly fluid national boundaries, and the subsequent contact between people, languages, and cultures. This is no truer than in countries such as Singapore, which has a history of cultural multilingualism driven by economic imperatives. Our study employs a mixed methods approach to present the diversity of language variation on signboards in Singapore’s Chinatown having resulted from the area’s culture and history, which dates back to the early 19th century. Following our examination of display practices, we observed that the dominant languages represented were Chinese and English, while the other official language (in this case, Tamil) was represented. Chinese dialects such as Hokkien and Cantonese, which were transliterated, were also widely represented. Reasons and explanations for the chosen languages on the signboards were elicited through consultations with hawkers. As a result, this study found that the exclusivist use of Chinese together with Chinese dialects is associated with an ethnic affiliation and territoriality commonly encountered in ethnically-marked neighborhoods, while the global language of English is used as a commodity catering to foreign and non-Chinese patrons.

Opis:
In international politics, language is core in inter-state trust and relationship, and the West African region (or sub-region), which is multi-ethnic, culturally plural and bi- or multilingual in imported languages, may never evolve an integrated region if the diversity is not converted from source of disconnections to source of connections. At best, West Africans have regarded themselves as precolonial kinsmen but post-colonial strangers as a result of the factor of language barriers created in the years of colonial rule. The Yoruba, Ewe, Ashante, Mende, Temne and many more had similarities of languages and cultures and led a regular life of communal conflict and cooperation until the arrival of the French, English, Portuguese and Germans, who established sharp misunderstandings and divisions along the lines of European lingua franca. From a participation-observation experience and perspective, and having consulted literature and government records on futile integration efforts, the study, adopting a functionalist model for analysis, submits that the differences have led to alienation among West Africans since independence, and ECOWAS, despite its spirited commitment to regional integration by the protocol on free movement across the borders, has faced brick-walls from human and social forces engendered by language barriers. This paper looks beyond the artificial linguistic barriers inherent in the bilingual or multilingual character of West Africa, by exploring the richness of the linguistic diversity to advance the cause of regional integration. The paper strongly advocates that local languages spoken across most of the West African states such as Hausa, Mandingo, Peul and Yoruba be taught in primary and secondary schools, while ECOWAS leaders should agree on making English, French and Portuguese compulsory in all secondary schools and higher institutions in their respective countries. These will help demystify and dismantle the artificial linguistic barriers created by the accident of colonialism and make the formal and informal instruments, including ECOWAS towards integration, more functional.

Opis:
The two experiments described in this article are focused on semantic priming in the context of lexical ambiguity and hierarchic model of mental lexicon. For both experiments, the verification method was a decision taken in the process of translating a sentence from Polish (L1) to English (L2). The decision was a result of solving dilemma of interpretation of the particular sentence that included homonym. The sentences used in the experiments were prepared in a manner that allowed them to be interpreted in at least two ways – each way being a direct result of interpretation of a ambiguous word meaning included in a sentence. In this study the secondary meanings of the homonyms were primed. In the first experiment the primes were presented in L2 – therefore this part of the study was concentrated on interlingual aspect of semantic priming. The second experiment was focused on intralingual aspect of semantic priming and the primes were presented in L1. The results of both experiments have shown the effect of semantic priming of ambiguous words’ meanings when translating from one language to another. Participants used significantly more often (when translating sentences from Polish to English) those English words the meaning of which was primed in the experimental groups during the first phase of the conducted experiments. We discuss the results in the context of the hierarchic model of mental lexicon in the case of bilingualism and we suggest possible paths for future research.

Opis:
The semantic analysis of nicknames of Old Believers’ from Augustów and Suwalki regionsThe Old Believers settled down in North-Eastern Poland in the second half of the 18th century. They were living in hermetic, homogenous communities. This protected their culture from strong exterior influence. Nowadays, after a number of civilizing transformations, the isolation practically disappeared making the Old Believers’ culture defenceless against influence of dominant Polish culture. Together with all that changes the Old Believers’ anthroponymy has been transformed. Nicknames used to be were very popular in Old Believers’ community. Giving nicknames is still a living only in villages Gabowe Grądy and Bór. The most numerous group are nicknames motivated by appellatives that define external inner features, temperament and habits. These names reflect the objective knowledge of the nickname makers and they are expressed by concrete vocabulary.

Preserved dialectal features and the Polish influence in old believers' dialect on the example of a representative of the older generation in the Augustów regionPolish Old Believers constitute a bilingual ethno-cultural minority.Their bilingualism has developed especially in the 20th century, and since then it has been modified under the influence of Polish language. On the one hand, there are Polish borrowings, insertions and loan-translations in Russian Old Believers’ dialect. On the other hand, the Old Believers have preserved many dialectal features from their region of origin – Pskov region in north-Western Russia. The author attempts to reveal, how many and which Pskov language features are still present in the Old Believers’ dialect. The analysis is basing on an idiolect of a representative of the old generation of the community of our interest.

Opis:
This paper is devoted to the linguistic and cultural integration of Polish immigrants in Great Britain. Together with the onset of the mass immigration of Poles to Britain in 2004, our UK-based compatriots entered a hybrid linguistic-cultural reality. Ponglish, as a result of the Polish-British linguistic and cultural contacts, applies words, phrases and syntactic structures derived from British English, thus forming a kind of a Polish-British speech. This speech reflects the type of adaptation that occurred in the case of Polish immigrants, namely integration.
