This essay historicizes the Shakespeare curriculum at UC Berkeley’s English department over the last one hundred years. An elite research university in the United States, UC Berkeley’s extensive course offerings have expanded due to changes in undergraduate education and external cultural shifts. With a growing number of courses on sexuality, race, gender, etc., that became part of the purview of an English department, the teaching of Shakespeare expanded as well. I demonstrate how the emphasis on Shakespeare in the U.S. undergraduate curriculum shifts over time from one form of recognition—an acknowledgement of his value or worth—to a recognition of identifying with his work based on prior experience. Distinguishing between courses that combine “Shakespeare and” and those that combine “Literature and,” I expose the consequences each has for the canonicity of both Shakespeare and subject fields with which his works are placed in conversation, explicitly and implicitly. I argue that the expansion of Shakespeare in the American undergraduate curriculum coincides with and depends on the compression of key aspects of interpretation that pose challenges for the new knowledges it seeks to create. I illuminate how an expanded Shakespeare curriculum saw a compression of Shakespeare into metonymic mythic status, which has implications for the teaching of literature from various identity and cultural groups. I demonstrate how the origins of an expansive undergraduate Shakespeare curriculum in the United States positions Shakespeare as the interlocutor for a wide range of topics.

Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie Berkeleyowskiego rozwiązania powyższej alternatywy związanej z kategorią przestrzeni wyłaniającej się z tekstu Próby stworzenia nowej teorii widzenia. W Nowej Teorii Widzenia Berkeley wykłada swój pogląd na postrzeganie wzrokowe. Zaczyna wywód od rozstrzygnięcia kwestii wzrokowego postrzegania odległości, a ta kwestia prowadzi go do znacznie dalszych rozstrzygnięć – w tym do koncepcji przestrzeni relatywnej, ugruntowanej w cielesnym doświadczeniu poznającego podmiotu.

Artykuł jest próbą charakterystyki nieopisanego dotąd zjawiska – filmu zakulisowego. Jego schemat fabularny opiera się na śledzeniu procesu powstawania spektaklu teatralnego od castingu po udaną premierę, do której dochodzi pomimo licznych perypetii. Ważną jego cechą jest przedstawienie zespołu teatralnego jako mikrospołeczności o potencjale metafory społecznej. Za prototyp gatunku można uznać backstage musical Busby’ego Berkeleya. W kolejnych dekadach nawiązywali do niego lub dekonstruowali jego struktury między innymi John Cassavetes, Bob Fosse, Carlos Saura, a ostatnio Alejandro González Iñárritu. Krzysztof Kieślowski i Agnieszka Holland w filmach należących do nurtu moralnego niepokoju w autorski sposób wykorzystali formułę filmu zakulisowego, by opowiedzieć o utracie złudzeń i zakwestionować ideę zespołu. Sugerowali przy tym, by ich filmy odczytywać nie jako krytykę instytucji teatru, lecz uniwersalne metafory społeczne.
This article attempts to characterize a genre that has not yet been described: the backstage film. Its storyline follows the process of creating a theatrical performance, from casting to a successful premiere, which takes place despite numerous obstacles. An important feature of the film is its depiction of the theater company as a micro-community with the potential of a social metaphor. Busby Berkeley’s backstage musical can be considered the prototype of the genre. In the subsequent decades, it was referred to or deconstructed by John Cassavetes, Bob Fosse, Carlos Saura, among others, and recently by Alejandro González Iñárritu. Krzysztof Kieślowski and Agnieszka Holland in their films representing moral anxiety cinema used the formula of the backstage film to talk about disillusionment and to question the idea of an ensamble They suggested that their films should be read not as a criticism of the institution of theater, but as universal social metaphors.

In the 1960s public space, alongside with other social problems, became one of the areas where conflicts and tensions which had accumulated in previous years were visible. The problem was not only its spatial development and the manner in which it was done, but also its availability for local communities. At the time of defragmentation of the American society and searching for access to places for everyone, it became a problem of not only social but also political nature, as it intensified at the height of a deep crisis of the American state institutions. Examples of such tensions are youth protests against the activities of Columbia University in New York and Berkeley in 1968 and 1969, respectively. The universities intended to expand campuses at the expense of the areas, which, despite being wasteland, were significant to the strong counter-culture in Berkeley and the black population of the New York Morningside neighborhood, where the university is located. While in the case of the New York university the desire to build a sports hall resulted from the real needs and the need to expand the housing base, the case of Berkeley shows how delay and the incapability of making decisions translated into unexpectedly large and dramatically ended riots. The similarities between the protests in both universities can be seen in the aversion to large corporations, such as universities, the subject of the dispute (the area necessary for its development), a highly administrative and bureaucratic way of conflict resolution and its result – a strike, violent demonstrations and deaths. The main difference between the protests is the political focus visible in Columbia, consisting in the desire to provoke a sharp crisis in other universities, by carrying out an occupational strike to be a model for other universities and building an alternative community based on countercultural values, in the form of, open to all their manifestations, Berkeley People’s Park. In a broader context, events in both universities can be interpreted as a symbolic clash between the old order and the new one, for which the dispute over public space was only a pretext in the struggle for recognition and acceptance.

In the present article, I aim at showing a shift in Berkeley’s understanding of society in the late Siris (1744). Although the work is primarily devoted to the curative qualities of tar-water and on the speculative level develops a new neoplatonic metaphysic of light, it should also be seen as a work in which Berkeley’s mature philosophy is expressed as a whole. Together with the fact that since the thirties Berkeley thought was more inclined towards practical, i.e. economic and social, issues, this might be a premise for interpreting the Siris as a work in which a vision of society is presented. The parallelism of nature and society, of macrocosm and microcosm, and the claim that nature is not perfect, but is a dynamic, developing whole, makes it possible to treat society as an imperfect whole developed and perfected by human activity. If such a reading is correct it evidences the fact that in his Siris Berkeley abandoned the religious radicalism typical for his early works.

Lata sześćdziesiąte XX w. w USA to moment aktywności społecznej i politycznej młodego pokolenia. Ich przejawem było m.in. ekspresyjne podkreślanie własnej odrębności. Ich symbolem stał się spór o niewielką działkę w Berkeley w maju 1969 r. W gorącej atmosferze politycznej Kalifornii i końca dekady gwałtowność kontrowersji wokół Parku Ludowego doprowadziła do nieudanej próby ich rozwiązania przy pomocy sił porządkowych, a śmierć jednego z uczestników demonstracji nadała im charakter znaczenie szerszy niż nieporozumienia wokół wykorzystania nieużywanej działki.The 1960s in the US were marked by social and political activity of a young generation. It was evident in, among other things, expressive stressing of their own distinctiveness. The controversy over a small plot of land in Berkeley in May 1969 became their symbol. In the hot political atmosphere of California at the end of the 1960s the dispute about the People’s Park led to a failed attempt to resolve it by force with the use of law enforcement services, and the death of one of the protesters gave the conflict much broader character than a local controversy over an unused plot of land.

Der Artikel rekonstruiert den Einfluss der Gedanken des französischen Philosophen und Historiker Pierre Bayle (1647–1706) auf die Philosophen und Literaten der britischen Aufklärung. Dieser Einfluss war sehr breit, wozu die weiteren englischen Ausgaben seines Hauptwerkes – des Historischen und kritischen Wörterbuchs (1697) – beigetragen haben. Bayle übte einen sehr starken Einfluss sowohl auf die Freimaurer und die Deisten (Toland, Shaftesbury, Mandeville, Collins), als auch auf die führenden britischen Empiristen (Locke, Berkeley und Hume) aus, obwohl es dabei oft zu Verfälschungen seiner Ansichten gekommen ist.
The article reconstructs the influence the thought of Pierre Bayle (1647–1706), the French philosopher and historian, had on British enlightenment philosophers and men of letters. The reason of his deep impact was the success of three succcessive English editions of his greatest work, namely Historical and critical dictionary (1697). To Bayle’s thought indebted were both eighteenth-century freethinkers and deists (Toland, Shaftesbury, Mandeville, Collins) and most eminent British empiricists (Locke, Berkeley, Hume), though its reception was frequently accompanied by various misunderstandings. Summarised by Adam Grzeliński
Artykuł rekonstruuje wpływ myśli francuskiego filozofa i historyka Pierre’a Bayle’a (1647–1706) na filozofów i literatów brytyjskiego Oświecenia. Wpływ ten był bardzo szeroki, do czego przysłużyły się kolejne angielskie edycje jego najważniejszego dzieła, jakim był Słownik historyczny i krytyczny (1697). Bayle bardzo silnie oddziałał zarówno na wolnomyślicieli oraz deistów (Tolanda, Shaftesbury’ego, Mandeville’a Collinsa), jak i czołowych brytyjskich empirystów (Locke’a, Berkeleya i Hume’a), choć bardzo często dochodziło przy tym do przeinaczania jego poglądów.

The aim of the article is to analyse the influence of the 17th-century debate on moral law as represented by Grotius and Pufendorf on George Berkeley’s vision of natural law included in his Passive Obedience (1712). The analysis regards the origin, scope and character of natural law as presented by all three authors. Also, it touches on the issues of their visions of the role of God in the world, place of religion in a civil state, as well as their concepts of human nature and a conflict of a duty of non-resistance and a right to self-preservation, which was a source of great contention among philosophers of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Der Artikel verfolgt das Ziel, die Arbeiten des britischen Philosophen George Berkeley, die in der Zeit seines Aufenthalts in Cloyne in Irland in den Jahren 1743–1753 entstanden sind, unter dem Gesichtspunkt des protestantischen irischen Patriotismus in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts zu untersuchen. Im ersten Teil des Artikels wird die allgemeine Charakteristik des irischen Patriotismus in dem angegebenen Zeitraum geschildert. Im zweiten Teil wende ich mich dem Einsatz Berkeleys in die Verbesserung der Lebensbedingungen der irischen Gesellschaft zu. Es werden die Postulate des Philosophen hinsichtlich des religiösen, wirtschaftlichen und sozialpolitischen Lebens der irischen Gesellschaft untersucht. Infolge der Analyse wird Berkeleys Interpretation des irischen Patriotismus dargestellt, der auf dem Postulat des Strebens nach dem Gemeinschaftswohl begründet wurde. In der Auffassung des Philosophen war das Verständnis der Gemeinschaft von historischen Umständen bedingt. Theoretisch bedeutete die Gemeinschaft für ihn die Menschheit als solche, praktisch bedeutete sie die Gemeinschaft der anglikanischen Kirche, die territoriale Gemeinschaft und auch die Staatsgemeinschaft, die Irland mit Großbritannien im Rahmen des sich entwickelnden Britischen Imperiums bildete.Ins Deutsche übersetzt von Anna Pastuszka
The article provides an analysis of the works written by George Berkeley when he was a bishop of Cloyne in Ireland between 1734 and 1753. The analysis is conducted in the context of the Irish Protestant patriotism of the first half of the 18th century, the characteristic of which is provided in the first part of the article. The second part is devoted to Berkeley’s engagement in improving life of the society in Ireland in different aspects, i.e. religious, economic, and socio–political. The result of the analysis is an interpretation of the meaning of Berkeley’s Irish patriotism based on the concept of aiming at the good of the whole. Its reference differed for Berkeley in the particular moments of the contemporary history of Ireland. In theory it meant mankind as such. Celem artykułu jest analiza prac brytyjskiego filozofa George’a Berkeleya z okresu jego pobytu w Cloyne w Irlandii w latach 1734–1753 pod kątem protestanckiego patriotyzmu irlandzkiego w pierwszej połowie XVIII wieku. W pierwszej części artykułu zostanie przedstawiona ogólna charakterystyka protestanckiego patriotyzmu irlandzkiego we wskazanym okresie. W drugiej części artykułu odwołam się do zaangażowania Berkeleya w poprawę warunków życia społeczeństwa Irlandii. Analizie zostaną poddane postulaty filozofa w zakresie życia religijnego, gospodarczego i społeczno-politycznego społeczeństwa Irlandii. W wyniku analizy zostanie przedstawiona interpretacja Berkeleyowskiego patriotyzmu irlandzkiego, który był ufundowany na postulacie dążenia do dobra wspólnoty. W koncepcji filozofa jej rozumienie było zależne od okoliczności historycznych. W teoretycznym ujęciu wspólnota oznaczała dla niego ludzkość jako taką, w praktyce – wspólnotę Kościoła anglikańskiego, wspólnotę terytorialną, a także wspólnotę państwową, którą Irlandia tworzyła wraz z Wielką Brytanią w ramach rozwijającego się Imperium Brytyjskiego.

Sedno artykułu stanowi postulat podjęcia badań zmierzających do rekonstrukcji dynamiki i immanentnej logiki rozwoju filozofii kartezjańskiej poprzez historyczno-teoretyczną analizę jednej z niezbadanych linii recepcji kartezjanizmu, wiodącej przez filozofię brytyjskich myślicieli minorum gentium: Arthura Colliera, Johna Norrisa, Richarda Burthogge’a etc. Przeanalizowanie poszczególnych stadiów ewolucji myśli postkartezjańskiej w ramach jednej tradycji intelektualno-kulturowej ma pozwolić na teoretyczno-historyczne ugruntowanie systemu Berkeleya (uznawanego za punkt kulminacyjny postkartezjańskiego idealizmu brytyjskiego), w nurcie szeroko rozumianej myśli kartezjańskiej, dostarczając tym samym przesłanek do ogólnych wniosków na temat logiki rozwoju systemów filozoficznych inspirowanych myślą Kartezjusza.
The aim of this paper is to suggest how the internal logic and dynamics of the development of Cartesian philosophy can be reconstructed by means of the historical-theoretical analysis of one of the most forgotten lines of reception of Cartesianism, leading through the philosophy of British thinkers minorum gentium: Arthur Collier, John Norris, Richard Burthogge etc. Such analysis of the particular stages of the evolution of post-Cartesian thought—within one intellectual-cultural context, makes it possible to situate Berkeley’s system (considered as a culminating point of the development of post-Cartesian British idealism) in the stream of the widely understood Cartesian thought. At the same time the analysis provides sufficient data to draw some general conclusions regarding the logic of the development of Cartesian-inspired philosophical systems.

The article undertakes to prove that Ian McEwan is an ambitious and versatile writer who is not afraid of experimenting with forms which are on the borderline of literature and other arts. It presents McEwan as a literary artist having a wide professional knowledge of music. The analysis focuses on McEwan’s opera libretto For You which is a problematic work for any literary analysis as, being a multimedia narrative text type, it stands on the borderland between literature and music. The article analyses the interdependence of these two spheres considering the libretto as a complex artistic text – which refers to music at various interpretation levels: the language, style, plot and construction – and sheds new light on the narrative complexities of the text/music interaction.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is a critical reconstruction and comparison of the philosophical positions of John Locke and George Berkeley on the problem of cognition as a reflection (Abbildtheorie) of reality. The article argues that Berkeley rejects the theory of transcendental reflection, but he does not refute any theory of reflection, because he recognizes the theory of immanent reflection. It is the background for the philosophy of Immanuel Kant that he has more connections with the realism of Locke than the idealism of Berkeley.

Opis:
The paper seeks to answer the question about the actual influence of the Lockean thought on Berkeley’s philosophy. It promotes the view that though scepticism that arises from the representational theory of perception is an important factor for motivating Berkeley to built his anti-sceptical strategy, it is the so-called corpuscular scepticism that was in fact an essential element of this influence. The latter was a consequence of assuming the notion of corpuscular, yet unknown material substance by Locke, and motivated Berkeley to consider an argument for rejection of the existence of such substance. The Berkeleian anti-sceptical argument here seems congenial to the Cartesian origins of his definition of existence, and enables us to combine the Lockean perspective with the Cartesian reading of sources of Berkeley’s philosophy.

The article discuss usage of Berkeley DB data structures such as hash tables and b-trees for implementation of a high performance URL database. The article presents a formal model for a data structures oriented URL database, which can be used as an alternative for a relational oriented URL database.
W artykule omówiono zastosowanie struktur danych z pakietu Berkeley DB, takich jak: tablice z haszowaniem i b-drzewa do implementacji wysoko wydajnych baz danych adresów URL. Przedstawiono model formalny bazy danych zorientowanej na struktury pamieci, która może być alternatywa dla relacyjnie zorientowanej bazy danych linków URL.

This article is the first one to examine the evolution of the notion of mathematical proof in a historical perspective. First I present the intuitive, approach of Descartes, according to which mathematical proof is based on self-evident principles. I follow with an analysis of Berkeley’s mathematical instrumentalism and argue that he can be considered a predecessor of modern formalism. The article also deals with the ideas of Peacock and Pasch, and their role in the development of the modern formalistic viewpoint.
