Opis:
The burial history and thermal evolution of the western part of the Baltic region was reconstructed by means of 1-D modelling for eight boreholes penetrating the lower Paleozoic succession. The Neoproterozoic rifting presumably caused elevation of heat flow, while Cambrian to Mid Ordovician post-rift thermal sag of the Baltica passive margin led to systematic decrease of heat flow with time. Development of the Late Ordovician to Silurian flexural foredeep of the Caledonide collision zone was associated with intensive subsidence, a high rate of sediment deposition and rapid burial of the Upper Cambrian and/or Tremadocian, Upper Ordovician and lower Silurian source rocks, presumably sufficient for the early stage of oil generation. After post-Caledonian Early Devonian uplift, the western Baltic region was subject to Early Devonian to early Carboniferous subsidence and deposition, leading to further burial of the source rocks. Together with elevated heat flow, characteristic of the Variscan broad foreland, this caused further source rocks maturation and hydrocarbon generation. Late- to post-Variscan uplift and erosion (late Carboniferous to late Permian) resulted in complete removal of the Middle Devonian to lower Carboniferous strata and development of the major regional unconformity. During late Permian to Cretaceous time the western part of the Baltic region constituted an eastern flank of the Polish Trough, with the main phases of subsidence and burial during late Permian-Early Triassic time, related to rifting in the Polish Trough, and during Late Cretaceous time, related to the compressional regime. Maturity profiles in boreholes from the vicinity of the studied boreholes indicate the presence of a late Mesozoic (Late Cretaceous?) positive thermal event, causing further maturation of the source rock.

Opis:
Science communication, especially science diplomacy, is seen as a means to remain in the conversation in times of political crisis, including the Cold War era. In this paper, drawing on experiences from an ongoing oral history project within the ‘Bridging the Baltic’ network, which is interested in knowledge transfer during the Cold War and afterwards in northern Europe, we look at pitfalls of international interview projects in medicine, e.g. the influence of the chosen language in international interview projects.

The Baltic Institute established in 1925 was a pioneering initiative aimed at conducting and popularising scholarly research on Pomeranian and Baltic matters. Apart from defending against German claims, its activists also called for Poland to be wide open to the sea. After the war, the Institute engaged in the development of the Baltic lands, both economically and historically. To the liquidation of the Baltic Institute in 1951 contributed the policy of the authorities which did not accept the visions of Poland’s development that differed from their own.

Opis:
Successful preliminary archival research in Russian Naval National Archives in St. Petersburg (RGAVMF) was conducted by the author in 201. It concerned the period between the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, was a result of making archive materials available, however, only up to 1917. Based on the available sources, one can state that the general situation concerning navigational security of shipping in the regions of the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia in the times of Russian Empire, up to 1918, was complicated because Finnish land, between 1809–1917, formed Grand Duchy of Finland, an autonomous part of the Russian Empire. Due to this situation, the safety navigational regulations in the region were based on Russian law. Lightships and lighthouses of the described regions had Russian names. It was not until Finland was separated from Russia when the original, Finnish, names of navigational signs, written in Latin alphabet were introduced. The lightships shown in the monograph have both Russian and Finnish names written in Cyrillic alphabet. Some of the vessels are also present among Finnish lighthouses but have different names. A similar situation occurs when describing Estonian and Latvian lightships, which belonged to those countries between 1920–1939 but, apart from that period, belonged to Russian and Soviet governments.

Opis:
The sense of belonging and togetherness plays an important role throughout the existence of any nation. It is not only a stable social organisation or, in other words, social structure, but also a continuity of common emotional experiences, that is necessary for a harmonious and sustainable existence of any society. While discussing national identity, we also discuss common European values and an identity that unifies the European nations. However, it is considerably easier to substantiate the existence of a regional identity as opposed to an identity that can unify one particular part of the world. The Baltic states are often perceived as a unified cultural space; hence this paper assesses to what extent they have developed a common legal tradition that could be used to form a common identity of the Baltic peoples. The paper looks at several distinct historical periods: the Middle Ages up until the collapse of Livonia, from the collapse of Livonia until the territory of the Baltic states was annexed by the Russian Empire, the rule of the Russian Empire, the time of independent nation states in between the two world wars in the twentieth century, the period of the occupation by the USSR, the restoration of independence, and finally – a common existence and future as a part of the European Union.

Opis:
The end of the 1980s brought changes to the operation of fisheries in the Baltic Sea. As a result of the deteriorating economic situation, fishing and fishing services companies, including the “Koga” enterprise from Hel, started to cooperate with foreign entities. The process involved sending cutters abroad, which could entail crewmen fleeing or committing misdemeanours or crimes. Therefore, the Reconnaissance Division of the Border Protection Troops stationed at that time in the port of Hel was engaged in the matter. The soldiers began their surveillance of the suspected fishermen. The purpose of this article is to present selected cases related to the cruises of “Koga” cutters to Denmark, operated by the Border Control Post of the Border Protection Troops in Hel. It discusses issues related to the activities of Border Protection Troops in securing the maritime border of the Polish People’s Republic and presents three operational cases that involved the company’s crew. Each had different foundations, and the investigations carried out by the soldiers revealed the different motives of the fishermen involved in the cases. The cases mostly ended with the suspects being excluded from the cruises to Bornholm. Thanks to the materials produced and preserved, it is possible to investigate the influence of the Reconnaissance Division of the Border Protection Troops on the daily life of the fishermen working on the “Koga” cutters and the extent of this interference.

Specyfika użytkowania jednostek, nazywanych też latarniowcami, wymagała zastosowania w badaniach metod badawczych, takich jak analiza i synteza historyczna, indukcja i metoda geograficzna. Prezentowane treści są jedynie częścią skandynawskich problemów, jakie powstały w trakcie eksploatacji opisywanych specyficznych jednostek. Materiały archiwalne związane z działalnością statków latarniowych autorzy pozyskali dzięki kwerendzie w niemieckich, szwedzkich i rosyjskich archiwach państwowych.
The study presents results of several years of research into the issues of the creation, opera- tion and specificity of the operation of Baltic lightvessels – useful at the time of the lack of stationary lighthouses on shipping routes. The described ships were characteristic shipping marks of Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia and Germany at the turn of the 11th and 20th centuries. The specificity of the units, also called lightships, required the use of research methods such as historical analysis and synthesis, induction and geographical method. The presented paper is only a part of the Scandinavian problems that arose during the oper- ation of the specific entities described. A number of scientific papers have been delivered at both national and international conferences. Archival materials related to the operation of lightships were acquired by the authors in the German, Swedish and Russian state archives.

Opis:
The article focuses on the representation of the year 1918 in Latvian literature. On November 18, the independent Republic of Latvia was proclaimed, and in the years to come international recognition of the state’s sovereignty followed. In retrospect, this event stimulated a number of salutary descriptions and interpretations and certainly provides a milestone in the history of the Latvian nation. It is, however, also important to discuss the proclamation of independence in the context of the Great War that brought a lot of suffering to the inhabitants of Latvia. Therefore, a critical evaluation of the events preceding the year 1918 is certainly worthy of discussion. The article first sketches the historical and geopolitical contexts of the period immediately before and during the Great War as well as the changed situation in its aftermath. This introduction is followed by a discussion of the novel 18 (2014) by the contemporary Latvian author Pauls Bankovskis (b. 1973) that provides a critical retrospective of the events leading to the proclamation of the nation state from a twenty-first century perspective. Bankovskis employs an intertextual approach, engaging with a number of earlier publications dealing with the same topic. Among the authors included are Anna Brigadere, Aleksandrs Grīns, Sergejs Staprāns, Mariss Vētra, and others. The paper contextualizes the contribution of these writers within the larger historical picture of the Great War and the formation of the nation states and speculates on the contemporary relevance of the representation of direct experience, and the use of written sources related to these events.

Opis:
The article presents and discusses the historiographical concept of North Eastern Europe which has been coined by the German historian Klaus Zernack (1931–2017). Firstly, the article looks into the origins of the term, which date back to the nineteenth century, and stresses the significance of the research on the multicultural region of Old Livonia conducted by the Estonian-German historian Paul Johansen. His findings turned out to be crucial for shaping Zernack’s understanding of the concept of North Eastern Europe, which is discussed in the second part of the text. Zernack first referred to the term in his research on early modern Swedish-Russian diplomatic relations, but in various articles published subsequently he expanded his understanding of North Eastern Europe to comprise the multicultural history and political entanglements of the whole Baltic Sea region. The third part of the article discusses the impact of Zernack’s notion. In contrast with the influence he had on shaping the historiographical concept of East Central Europe within German scholarship, North Eastern Europe as a historical region has not gained similar traction among scholars. This may be explained by three factors. Firstly, the Baltic Sea region has once more become a more convincing geographical term, also in international scholarly discussion, especially when compared to Zernack’s deliberately artificial term. Secondly, the notion of Norden, in particular since the 1990s, has expanded to incorporate the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and thus started, at least partly, to compete with North Eastern Europe. Thirdly, the concept of North Eastern Europe has been ambiguous by a reference to, on the one hand, only the eastern part of the Baltic Sea region and, on the other hand, to this whole region. Thus, North Eastern Europe proves to be an epistemologically stimulating notion that, however, is more difficult to handle outside scholarly debates.

This article critically discusses the publication entitled Sovietisation and violence: the case of Estonia, edited by Meelis Saueauk and Toomas Hiio, published in 2018 by the University of Tartu Press as the first volume of the Proceedings of the Estonian Institute of Historical Memory series. The author of this article refers in detail to several of the studies and articles published in the volume, most of which were written by researchers associated with its publisher, the Estonian Institute of Historical Memory. In terms of content, as the reviewer notes, the publication’s aim is to introduce the international academic reader to the topic of the forced Sovietisation of Estonia in the 20th century. The author will attempt to assess to what extent the discussed volume lives up to the hopes placed in it. Overall, he concludes that despite all the errors and omissions noted, the publication’s desired aim was achieved, while also showing the above-named institution’s potential as a scholarly research unit with ambitions reaching beyond the local academic market.

Opis:
The North American gammaridean amphipod, Gammarus tigrinus, was found in the easternmost part of the Baltic Sea (Neva Estuary) near a new oil terminal. This species may well have been transported to the Neva Estuary with ballast waters from the Finnish area of the Gulf of Finland, where it was recorded recently. In 2005, the mid-summer density of G. tigrinus was 27 indiv. m−2. By 2006 this species had spread 100 km to the east from the first site, colonizing the northern coastal zone of the estuary. Its density reached 99–126 indiv. m−2. Fecund females and juveniles contributed about 50% to the entire population density, which testifies to the successful reproduction and establishment of G. tigrinus in the Neva Estuary. There is a high risk of further expansions of G. tigrinus from the new area to the various lakes of Eastern Europe via inland canal-river systems, which may lead to unforeseeable changes in aquatic communities.
