    Opis:
    The purpose of this paper is to describe the variability of the chemical characteristics of springwater in the Marków Potok catchment. Five springs were selected for research purposes. The research was performed in spring and summer 2013 and 2014. Ca was found as the most common cation, HCO3 was the most common anion and NO3 was dominated in the biogenic compounds in the analysed springwater. Comparing the period of spring and summer the highest values of most of the chemical characteristics of water occurred in the summer, the lowest in the spring. It was found that chemical properies of water springs were shaped by the diverse geological structure of the catchment area, climatic conditions, the process of dilution and the biological activity of the basin.

    Opis:
    Spatial and temporal pattern of seed fall of beech was examined in the subalpine and upland natural forests with prevailing beech. The obtained results point to several regularities associated with seed density, fraction of full seeds in the seedlot, date of seeding and constant of the spatial pattern of beech seed fall.

    Opis:
    The effect of the snow cover on the survival of beech seeds from the time seeds fell onto the ground until the appearance of seedlings was investigated during two seasons at the study sites in the Babiogórski National Park and in the Ojcowski National Park. The obtained results show that snow cover has influence on the shaping of a spatial pattern of seed survival, and on the appearance of germinated seedlings. However, no decisive influence of snow cover was shown on the appearance of seedlings. The drying of the germinated seeds is the main cause of their mortality.

    Opis:
    Beech and fir seed predation by rodents were studied in natural beech forests in the Babia Góra and Ojców National Parks. Studies were carried out in the mast and non−mast years. Similar to seed quantity available at the forest floor, rodent density was considered an important parameter in assessing predation of seeds by these small mammals. The quantity of collected seeds from experimental plots was the measure of rodent pressure on seeds. In addition, information about changing seed density on experimental plots over time was used to assess the pressure on beech seeds by rodents. Specification of these data allowed to determine the intensity of seed predation by rodents depending on seed quantity.

    Opis:
    The article presents results of the research on microarthropods (Acari and Collembola) inhabiting fallen spruce trees. The research was conducted in the spruce forest Plagiothecio−Piceetum tatricum typicum in the Babia Góra National Park, Carpathian Mountains. Five downed spruce logs in different stage of decay and neighbouring soil were sampled seasonally. Over 91 thousands specimens of mites and springtails were collected in 140 samples. Changes in population densities of different groups of microarthropod with the age of the dead wood was analysed and compared with densities in forest litter and soil. The total number of microarthopods inhabiting downed spruce logs on the area of hectare in the studied forest was estimated.

    The grey alder bog forest Caltho laetae−Alnetum occurs in the Babia Góra region in two variants differing in the composition of the tree stand, ground cover and habitat conditions. The variant with Alnus incana is similar to universally met in the Polish Carpathians. In turn, variant with Alnus glutinosa is characterized by a bigger participation of Aconitum variegatum and the presence of plants typical for fens and willow brushwood from the range adler carr.

    Opis:
    The aim of this study was to characterize the texture of a primeval forest composed of Fagus sylvatica (L.), Abies alba (Mill.) and Picea abies ((L.) H. Karst). Empirical data were collected in the Babia Góra National Park (southern Poland) in the stand being under strict protection since 1934. 259 circular plots with a radius of 7.0 m and an area of 154 m² each were established in nodes of 20×20 m grid. For individual plots and blocks of the combined plots representing gradient of spatial scales between 0.015 and 0.640 ha, the number of trees, diameter at breast height (dbh) distributions, basal areas and the values of structural diversity indices of Gini (GI), Shannon (SH) and Staudhammer−LeMay (STVI) were determined. The indices were also calculated for several types of theoretical distributions. Based on the values obtained for the theoretical distributions, the individual plots and the blocks of the combined plots were classified as representing simple (GI≤0.30;STVI≤0.10), moderately diversified (0.300.45; STVI>0.30) dbh structure. For all the spatial scales analyzed the average values of GI and STVI indices reached the level typical for populations of a high structural diversity (i.e. exceeded the values of 0.45 and 0.30 respectively). According to the GI and STVI values, the portion of stand patches with complex dbh structure ranged from 70.9% and 68.2% at the individual plots scale, respectively, up to 100% in the blocks of 16 plots (4×4). In general, in all the spatial scales analyzed the spatial diversification of the dbh distributions and basal area levels was higher than in managed selection forests and much higher than in managed single−storied stands. The dominant frequency of highly diversified dbh distributions found in the analysed stand was not concordant with the predictions of the forest dynamics theory based on developmental stages, according to which in primeval forests with a significant partition of Abies alba and Picea abies should prevail stand patches of rather simple dbh structure, characteristic for the long−lasting optimum stage.
