Nie można zrozumieć polskiej kultury bez poznania Kresów i tego, co je tworzyło. Warto o tym przypominać, zwłaszcza młodym Polakom, którzy często nie mają świadomości, że tam kiedyś była Polska.
The Eastern Borderlands of the Polish Commonwealth used to be a Polish heartland where some of the greatest Polish admirers of the Borderlands' beauty hail from. One cannot properly understand the Polish culture without getting to know the Eastern Borderlands and that which they consisted in. One should remember it and remind of it especially young Poles, who often seem to fail to realize that the Borderlands used to be a part of Poland.

The politics of nationalism in the Polish-German borderlandThe review discusses the book by John D. Kulczycki on the politics of national homogenization in the Third Reich and in post-war Poland in the Polish-German borderlands. Kulczycki’s book presents a comprehensive and well-structured analysis of the nationalising policies in the entire Polish-German borderland. Referring to the rich literature and primary sources, the author examines the main tenets of the Third Reich and Poland’s post-war politics, their local implementation and the similarities and differences between policies in various regions. It is argued that is a very successful and valuable syn- thesis. The great merit of the book is that it is based on clear and solid theoretical premises. Polityka nacjonalizacji na pograniczu polsko-niemieckimRecenzja omawia książkę Johna D. Kulczyckiego dotyczącą polityki narodowej homogenizacji prowadzoną przez III Rzeszę oraz powojenną Polskę na pograniczu polsko-niemieckim. Książka Kulczyckiego przedstawia całościową i uporządkowaną analizę tej polityki nacjonalizacji. Nawiązując do bogatej literatury i źródeł, autor analizuje główne założenia powojennej polityki III Rzeszy, a także powojennej Polski, ich lokalną realizację oraz podobieństwa i różnice między politykami w różnych regionach. Jest to bardzo udana i wartościowa synteza. Wielką zaletą książki jest to, że opiera się na jasnych i solidnych przesłankach teoretycznych.

“Życie Nowogródzkie” language of press in the Borderlands
Opis:
In the inter‑war period, a number of press titles appeared in Nowogródek, but chief among them was “Życie Nowogródzkie”. Several dozen issues of this periodical/daily bear witness to the rare phonetic, inflectional, word‑making and syntactic features of Borderland Polish. Much more numerous are Borderland dialect words, words and phrases more frequently used in the Borderlands, and other peculiar words (archaisms, words now obsolete, words rarely used, “neologisms,” idiolectisms and phrasal idioms). 165 such language forms have been recorded. All volumes of “Życie Nowogródzkie” are deserving of detailed study.

This article identifies the forms of updating and constructing the memory of the Eastern Borderlands through material objects, referring to Jan Assmann’s concept of cultural memory, memory of the things and the process of exceeding places from the space. These considerations are supported by the statements of the formerly residents of the Eastern Borderlands taken from interviews conducted by me in 2010–2012 in Lower Silesia. Described objects as earth, spoons, rugs and Christmas decorations create symbolical, but based on the living memory milieux de mémoire in contrast to the objects placed in the chambers of memory and museums of Borderlands, which are institutionalizing and typing in the historical process the image of Borderlands, being a lieux de mémoire according to the concept of Pierre Nora.

This paper treatises Polish sociology of borderlands (mostly Eastern) as the rich resources of metaphors of borders, especially national and political ones. It shows how these metaphors are linked to different sociological imagery-modern and postmodern. Its aim is to reconstruct analytical strategies and research projects from this sub-discipline, focusing on metaphors of borders. These strategies and projects are based on very different approaches to metaphors. The first operation is an instrument which the theoretician uses to reconstruct the theoretical typology of borders and borderlands. The second operation is a tool which the researcher uses to reflect more deeply on the empirical data concerning individual and collective reactions to borders and borderlands. The third operation is a narrative tool used by examinees who inhabit the borderlands. The paper provides a broad and intensive discussion of the functions of different metaphors about borders in relation to the different intellectual approaches to problems of borderlands and borders. It stresses the needs for equal treatment in Polish sociology of borderland problems of borderlands and problems of national borders. Especially emphasizes the positive functions of academic interest in borders metaphors in this scientific treatment. Generally speaking, this analyse enhances many links between sociology of borderlands and cultural anthropology and is closely connected to the question of where these intellectual operations on metaphors belong in the project of an interdisciplinary approach to borders and borderlands.

Opis:
Issues of the administrative division in the broader context of political and administrative reforms connected with democratization and decentralization are considered. Some historical aspects of the administrative division modeling in Ukrainian borderlands are analyzed. Goals, mechanisms and the course of the current reform of administrative division at the local level in the Volyn and Lviv provinces are presented. The specifics of wealthy communities – new administrative units at the local level are outlined. Features of budget decentralization based on the example of comparing the structure of local government revenue are characterized. The problems and threats faced by the organizers at the present stage of reform are revealed, and some solutions to problematic situations in implementation of the new administrative division are proposed.

W twórczości Romany Kaszczyc – artystki przyrody, pogranicza, peryferii, ziemi zachodniopomorskiej i lubuskiej, Puszczy Barlineckiej – w perspektywie sąsiedztwa, współzależności i różnorodności, status granicy traci swoje ontologiczne znaczenie. Puszcza trwa, niezależnie od umownych granic wyznaczonych na administracyjnej mapie Polski. Jednocześnie warto zadać pytanie, czy kultura staje się – powiększającą zachłannie swoje terytorium – sąsiadką natury, a może jej ciemiężycielką? Barlinecka Roma kreuje w swojej twórczości świat, w którym schematy i role społeczne stają się więzieniem. Natomiast w oczach artystki współistniejąca binarność nocy i dnia, mroku i jasności, życia i śmierci jest metafizyczna. Czy zatem granica byłaby transcendentna, epistemologicznie wydarzająca się oraz niezależna od człowieka? Chciałabym przede wszystkim nie tylko przedstawić zasługującą na upamiętnienie artystkę, która świadomie wybrała życie na terenach pogranicza, ale i przyjrzeć się granicy samej w sobie, w jaki sposób wytwarzają się i konstytuują antagonizmy między kulturą i naturą, centrum i peryferiami, światowym uznaniem i regionalnością. Głównym moim celem badawczym jest natomiast stworzenie interpretacji wybranych tekstów kultury Romany Kaszczyc w świetle rozważań semantycznego doświadczenia pogranicza. Krytyczne opracowanie dzieł literackich i plastycznych przedstawię w perspektywie neoregionalnej oraz ekokrytycznej. Interpretacje staną się jednocześnie pre-tekstem do rozważań związanych z problematyką sąsiedztwa, granicy oraz ekocydu. Inspiracje badawcze czerpać będę z dorobku naukowego m.in. Julii Fiedorczuk, Aleksandry Ubertowskiej, Tatiany Czerskiej, Elżbiety Rybickiej.
Romana Kaszczyc – an artist concerned with nature, borderlands, peripheries, the West Pomeranian and Lubusz lands, the Barlinecka Wilderness – dissolves in her work the ontological dimension of borders, while bringing into play the perspectives of neighbourhood relations, interdependence and diversity. Wilderness endures, irrespective of the conventional borders marked on the administrative map of Poland. However, it is also worth raising the question of whether culture is becoming – by greedily expanding its territory – nature’s neighbour, or perhaps its oppressor? In her work, Roma Barlinecka creates a world in which social patterns and roles become a prison. Whereas, the coexisting binary reality of night and day, darkness and illumination, life and death is metaphysical in the artist’s eyes. Thus, is the border transcendent, epistemological and independent of man? Above all, I would not only like to commemorate a worthy artist who consciously chose to live in the borderlands, but also to look at the border itself, and how antagonisms between culture and nature, centre and periphery, global recognition and regionality are generated and constituted. Notwithstanding the goals above, the main research objective is to develop an interpretation of selected culture-themed texts by Romana Kaszczyc in the light of considerations of the semantic experience of the borderland. I will present a critical study of literary and plastic works from a neo-regional and ecocritical perspective. The interpretations shall induce deliberations on neighbourhood relations, border and ecocide. Research inspirations will be drawn from the scholarly output of, among others: Julia Fiedorczuk, Aleksandra Ubertowska, Tatiana Czerska, Elżbieta Rybicka.

In our research we are seeking for a Lower Silesian identity, we are especially interested in the Polish-German cultural heritage in social remembrance (or social oblivion). In the article our basic purpose is to provide the grounds for discussion about the presence of the sacred space in social memory (the old German Calvary as a part of contemporary Lubawka’s cultural heritage), using group interviews with visual presentations to stimulate a journey back into the past, to familiarize with the place and its images. We aim at the reconstruction of “social frames of memory”, the moments when the small sacral architecture began to lose its religious mad social power, and we also want to show young residents’ attitudes towards this process. The project also seems to have some social value because it may become an introduction to the debate on preserving the Calvary as an element of local identity.

Ethnic conflict in the view of classical sociology and social psychology (on the example of south-eastern Borderlands of the Second Polish Republic)The article was designed to demonstrate that social conflicts, especially ethnic ones, which belong to many factors of martyrdom. Thus, it was structured at four points. The considered topics led to the conclusion that the social and ethnic issues belong to the diverse  and complex topics. It is shown in theories of classics of sociology and contemporary theoreticians dealing with the ethnic conflicts in the aspect of sociology and social psychology. Konflikty etniczne w świetle socjologii klasycznej i psychologii społecznej (na przykładzie Kresów południowo-wschodnich II Rzeczypospolitej)Celem artykułu jest wykazanie, że konflikty społeczne, zwłaszcza te, które przyjmują postać konfliktów etnicznych, stanowią jedną z wielu przyczyn martyrologii. Artykuł został podzielony na cztery części. Rozpatrywane zagadnienia prowadzą do wniosku, że problemy społeczne i etniczne są zróżnicowane i złożone, jak wykazano w teorii klasyków socjologii oraz współczesnych teoretyków zajmujących się konfliktami etnicznymi z punktu widzenia socjologii i psychologii społecznej.

„Repatriacja” przymusowa zawsze pozostawia w sercu osoby wywiezionej ślad zaznanej krzywdy. Historia, zwłaszcza wojenna oraz powojenna, niejednokrotnie ukazuje los ludzi dotkniętych koniecznością pozostawienia domu rodzinnego, dorobku całego życia, przyjaciół, środowiska. Polacy mieszkający na Kresach Wschodnich bardzo dotkliwie odczuli decyzje państwa sowieckiego ingerującego w życie wielu narodów, a także trójki jałtańskiej troszczącej się o lepszy los mocarstw nie zważając na potrzeby i odczucia narodów mniejszych. Ten artykuł ma na celu ukazać cele jakimi kierowali się rządzący decydując o masowej wędrówce ludów, także sposoby „repatriacyjne” władz radzieckich wobec narodu polskiego zamieszkującego Galicję Wschodnią oraz skutki tych działań. W zasadzie praca będzie oparta na „nieznanych” dokumentach archiwalnych, które zostały zgromadzone i wydane przez ukraińskiego historyka Włodzimierza Serhijczuka. Ukazują one nie tylko sposoby działania rządzących, ale także opisują nastroje, jakie panowały wśród zdezorientowanej ludności oraz reakcje Polaków zamieszkujących Kresy.
Forcible repatriation always caused sense of wrong. The history, especially of war and post-war periods, shows lives of people who were deprived of their family home, property, friends and environment. The Poles, who used to live in Eastern Borderlands (Kresy Wschodnie), experienced the decision of Soviet and Crimea Conference very painfully, as the allied powers cared for their own business and did consider the needs and feelings of smaller nations. The aim of this statement is to show what the aim of the Soviet government was, when it decided about the repatriation, what the ways of repatriation were and what the results of the repatriation were. This article is based on unknown archive documents, collected and published by the Ukrainian historian Volodymyr Serhyichuk. The documents show not only the ways of action of Soviet but also people reaction and feeling.

Migration and emigration processes have always had and continue to have a significant impact on the socioeconomic and political situation of the whole world. The Zaporizhia Oblast will serve as an example of a multicultural area of Ukraine, as an attractive area for many newcomers since the 15th century. The multicultural borderlands of south¬ eastern Ukraine discussed in the paper are to demonstrate the influence of migration processes on the formation of individual identity, including in particular Polish identity. Nowadays, many in-habitants of the studied area are unable to clearly define their cultural identity.

The interest of Polish scholars in literary works written in Ruthenian or in Polish language in the borderlands of the Commonwealth varied in different periods. By the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 1930s, Poland was rather focused on the construction of her new national state and the accentuation of her civilizational mission towards Eastern Slavic literature. After World War II, the new borders of the Polish state under Communist rule directed the attention of Polish scholars and cultural dealers toward a new national conception, whose goal was to eradicate the memory of the Commonwealth and to canalize the intellectual efforts towards “truly” Polish heritage, anti-German antagonism and politically correct ideologies. However, some groundbreaking works were written in the 1960s. Radical changes appeared after 1989. Publications multiplied exponentially in the 1990s and 2000s. Post-colonial studies emerged. In Polish scholarship and culture, two main trends may be indicated: on the one hand, the need to analyze the cultural, linguistic and literary specificities of the borderlands of Ukraine and Belarus in the Lithuanian Grand principality and in the Crown territories; on the other, the need to consider in a systemic approach all the components (Ruthenian, Polish, Lithuanian, Jewish, German) of society and culture of the Rzeczpospolita. The article focuses on the most interesting trends and publications of the periods indicated above.

Opis:
Na przestrzeni ostatnich kilkunastu lat dostrzega się w polskiej turystyce sentymentalne zjawisko etosu dawnych Kresów Wschodnich. Każdego roku organizuje się kilka festiwali kultury kresowej, podczas których eksponowane jest dziedzictwo kulinarne Kresów Wschodnich. Najpełniej kuchnia kresowa prezentowana jest w programie Festiwalu Kultur i Kresowego Jadła w Baszni Dolnej, miejscowości położonej w województwie podkarpackim, w ramach którego od roku 2009 przeprowadzane są konkursy na dania i potrawy tradycyjnie związane z szeroko rozumianą kresowością. Coraz większe powodzenie tego przedsięwzięcia powoduje, że zaczyna ono odgrywać znaczącą rolę w promocji turystycznej ziem położonych przy wschodniej granicy polsko-ukraińskiej.
Over the last several years, in Polish tourism, we see the phenomenon of sentimental ethos of the former Eastern Borderlands. Every year, several festivals of the borderland culture are organized, during which culinary subjects are also exposed. Most fully, the borderland cuisine is presented in the program of the Festival of Cultures and Borderlands Cuisine in located in Podkarpackie Voivodeship Basznia Dolna, under which (since 2009) competitions are held for dishes and courses traditionally linked into broadly understood Borderland culture. The increasing success of this means that it is starting to play a significant role in the tourism promotion of the lands located on the Polish-Ukrainian border.
