    In 2001–2006, several experimental aspen plantations were established in the North-West of Russia (Leningrad region). Three in vitro propagated elite aspen (Populus tremula L.) clones from the Kostroma Forest Research Station were used as the planting stock for plantations. The planting plans of some experimental plantations were lost, which made it impossible to identify the genetic lineages. 13-years old unknown aspen clones demonstrated prominent growth rates, and reliably overtook natural aspen coppice. ISSR markers were used for fast and cheap restoring of the missing planting plan of the experimental aspen plantation under study; as a result, progenies of three elite aspen clones were recognized. The best fast-growing and stem rot resistant aspen clones was identified and called “Kostroma”.

    W pracy przedstawiono wyniki symulacji systemu procesowego do wytwarzania energii elektrycznej o mocy 100 W zaopatrzonego w stos stałotlenkowych ogniw paliwowych SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) zasilany metanem. Symulacje przeprowadzono z użyciem komercyjnego programu Aspen Plus. Analizowano wpływ reformingu parą wodną oraz reakcji katalitycznego spalania na finalne zużycie paliwa. Określono również wpływ natężenia przepływu powietrza na chłodzenie systemu.
    A 100 W power system based on a micro-tubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) stack was investigated. The commercially available Aspen Plus process simulator was chosen for modelling and parametric analysis of the system.The effects of reforming with water steam and of catalytic combus-tion on the final fuel consumption were analysed along with the influence of air flow rate on system cooling.

    The main objective of the study was to evaluate inter-annual ring-width variation and cumulative growth of aspen (Populus tremula L.) trees growing on the spots of different soil CO2 concentration at natural mofette site. We hypothesized that growth rate of trees is affected by CO2 concentration within their rooting zone. The study site was situated in the flood plain of Plesná stream near Hartoušov (Western Bohemia). Trees growing in a pure aspen stand were selected according to the CO2-gas regime within their rooting zone. Five high [CO2] trees (10–25% CO2 in the soil) and five low [CO2] trees (up to 3% CO2 in the soil) were sampled. Stem growth analysis of each trunk was carried out to study growth pattern in detail. High and low [CO2] trees significantly differed in a growth rate. At the age of 25 years, the basal area of high [CO2] trees exceeded low [CO2] trees by 39 %. The positive effect of CO2 on annual increment was pronounced particularly in the years with optimal growing conditions. Results suggest that trees can be fertilized not only by elevated atmospheric CO2 but also when fed with CO2 via the roots.

    The idea of oxy-combustion technology consists in burning fuel in the atmosphere of high purity oxygen. As a result, flue gas in such systems consists exclusively of almost carbon dioxide and water vapor. However, in practice, apart from CO2 and H2O, such compounds as argon, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen or oxygen appear in flue gas, which have to be separated to a great extent before CO2 transport. The most frequently used method of the separation of these gases from the CO2 stream is physical separation. In order to determine the energy intensity of the separation process, a numerical model of the carbon dioxide capture installation from the coal powered unit operating in oxy-combustion system has been built in the Aspen Plus software. This paper presents the results of calculations of the energy intensity of the process, taking into account such parameters as purity and recovery rate of the separated CO2 for a 460 MW supercritical unit. The analysis shows that reaching high purity and recovery rate of the carbon dioxide separated from flue gas is not difficult. However, reaching the required levels of other compounds content can be problematic. The main results are quantitatively presented in this paper. Some solutions for decreasing the energy intensity are also proposed.
    Idea układów oxy-spalania polega na spalaniu paliwa w atmosferze wysokiej czystości tlenu. Spaliny z tego typu układów składają się prawie wyłącznie z dwutlenku węgla i wody, a zatem koszt przygotowania CO2 do transportu do miejsca składowania jest niższy niż w układach konwencjonalnych. Jednak w praktyce, obok CO2 i H2O w spalinach pojawiają się także inne związki, w tym np. argon, dwutlenek siarki, azot czy tlen, które muszą zostać odseparowane przed transportem CO2. Najczęściej stosowanymi metodami separacji tych gazów ze strumienia CO2 jest separacja fizyczna. W celu określenia energochłonności procesu separacji zbudowany został model numeryczny układu wychwytującego dwutlenku węgla ze spalin bloku węglowego pracującego w atmosferze tlenowej. W tym celu wykorzystano program Aspen Plus. Obliczenia prowadzono dla układu o mocy 460 MW. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki obliczeń energochłonności układu z uwzględnieniem takich parametrów, jak czystość czy stopień odzysku CO2. Z analiz wynika, że osiągnięcie wysokiej czystości i stopnia odzysku separowanego z gazów spalinowych dwutlenku węgla nie jest trudne, jednak osiągnięcie wymaganych poziomów zawartości innych związków może być problematyczne. Zaproponowano również sposoby obniżenia energochłonności instalacji wychwytu CO2.

    Opis:
    Coffee pulp and husk are the primary residues of the coffee agro-industry. Disposing of them into the land can bring a serious problem on the environment. Strategies are needed to convert it into more valuable products as well as reduce the risk of environmental damage. This paper reports experimental and simulation investigation on the pyrolysis of Gayo arabica coffee pulp and husk in a pilot scale reactor. The investigation included finding the chemical and physical properties of biomass under ultimate, proximate, bomb calorimeter and TGA analyses. During the pyrolysis experiments, 3 kg of dried raw material was fed into the reactor and heated from room temperature to 600 °C, then held for 2.5 h. Afterwards, the resulting biochar and pyrolytic oil ware quantified for product distribution analysis. Modeling and simulation of the pyrolysis process were performed using Aspen Plus V10 software. Experimental results show that biochar is the main product giving a yield of 43.83%. The percentage of pyrolytic oil and un-condensable gas products are 25.5% and 30.67%, respectively. The thermodynamic simulation shows a good agreement with the experimental result, which helps in optimization and scaling up reactor.

    A process model for turbulent pressurized circulating fluidized-bed coal gasifier is created using ASPEN PLUS software. Both hydrodynamic and reaction kinetics parameter are taken into account, whose expressions for fluidized bed are adopted from the literature. Various reactor models available in ASPEN PLUS with calculator as External Block are nested to solve hydrodynamics and kinetics. Multiple operational parameters for a pilot-plant circulating fluidized-bed coal gasifier are used to demonstrate the effects on coal gasification characteristics. This paper presents detailed information regarding the simulation model, including robust analysis of the effect of stoichiometric ratio, steam to coal ratio, gasification temperature and gasification agent temperature. It is observed that, with the increase in the flow rate of air, the components hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methane reduce, which causes the Lower Heating Value (LHV) of synthesis gas (Syn. Gas) to decrease by about 29.3%, while increment in the steam flow rate shows a minute increase in heating value of only 0.8%. Stoichiometric ratio has a direct relationship to carbon conversion efficiency and carbon dioxide production. Increasing the steam to coal ratio boosts the production of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, and causes a drop in both carbon dioxide concentration and the conversion efficiency of carbon. High gasifying agent temperature is desired because of high concentration of CO and H2 &ensp, increasing carbon conversion and LHV. A high gasifying agent temperature is the major factor that affects the coal gasification to enhance H2 &enspand CO production rapidly along with other gasification characteristics.

    Kwas azotowy(V) jest związkiem chemicznym, którego większość przemysłowej produkcji jest wykorzystywana do wytwarzania nawozów azotowych. Ze względu na ciągły wzrost zapotrzebowania na produkty azotowe, który podyktowany jest dynamicznym wzrostem populacji ludności świata, produkcja HNO3 ciągle wzrasta. Istotnym problemem w przypadku syntezy HNO3 jest kwestia zanieczyszczeń, głównie gazowych, które są generowane w trakcie procesu. Głównym celem badań było wykorzystanie symulacji komputerowej procesu utleniania mieszaniny gazowej tlenków azotu, powstałej po utlenieniu amoniaku, do innych form tlenkowych. Określono optymalne parametry procesowe pozwalające na otrzymanie jak najwyższego stężenia kwasu azotowego(V). Pozwala to na uzyskanie maksymalnego stopnia przereagowania NOx do końcowego produktu, co jednocześnie minimalizuje ilość gazów odlotowych stanowiących odpad poprodukcyjny. Analizę procesu oparto na symulacji komputerowej wykonanej w programie Aspen Plus. Optymalizowanym parametrem był strumień molowy gazowych produktów utleniania amoniaku, poddawanych dalszemu utlenieniu do NOx. Wykonana analiza pozwoliła na określenie zależności stężenia kwasu azotowego(V), a także stopnia przereagowania NOx do HNO3, od optymalizowanego parametru.
    Nitric acid is a chemical compound that is mostly used in the nitrate fertilizers production. Due to an increased demand for nitrogen compounds, which is caused by the growth in the global population, the production of nitric acid is increasing. An important issue in HNO3 production are the gaseous pollutants, which are generated during the process. The main objective of this study was the computer simulation of the oxidation process, where the substrate was a gas mixture formed after ammonia oxidation process. The essence of this process was the oxidation of gaseous mixture comprised of nitrogen oxides and oxygen to other nitrogen oxides. Optimal process parameters to obtain the highest HNO3 concentration were chosen. This allows to get the maximum NOx conversion and minimized concentration of NOx in a waste gas stream. Analysis of process parameters was based on the computer simulation in Aspen Plus. Molar flow of gaseous oxidation products of ammonia was optimized. Obtained results allowed to determine the dependency of the concentration of nitric acid and NOx to HNO3 conversion on optimized parameter.

    Breeding scientists have given extensive attention to triploids in trees because of their importance to forestry. Consequently, creating and breeding triploids of good quality has become one of purposes of tree breeding. We chose two autotetraploids (Betula platyphylla, named Q10 and Q65) as female parents and eight hybrid diploids (B. platyphylla × B. pendula, named F1 – F8) as male parents to obtain progenies through controllable pollination, resulting in triploid progenies. Germination rate and germination energy of triploid seeds of Q65 were significantly higher (P < 0.01) than in triploid seed s of Q10. Triploid families with Q65 as female parent had a large quantity of saplings, whereas triploid families with Q10 as female parent had a small quantity of saplings. Triploid families with Q65 as female parent were generally superior in base diameter and height to base diameter ratio when compared to a diploid family. Q65×F3 was preliminarily recognized as the superior family. These results demonstrate that the female parent has a major influence on triploid progenies, although the male parent also has a small influence. The results provided a reference to build seed orchards of triploid birch trees, choose tetraploids as female parents and forecast triploid families of good quality.

    A CO2 boiled off gas (CO2 BOG) reliquefaction system using liquid ammonia cold energy is designed to solve the problems of fuel cold energy waste and the large power consumption of the compressor in the process of CO2 BOG reliquefaction on an ammonia-powered CO2 carrier. Aspen HYSYS is used to simulate the calculation, and it is found that the system has lower power consumption than the existing reliquefaction method. The temperature of the heat exchanger heater-1 heat flow outlet node (node C-4) is optimised, and it is found that, with the increase of the node C-4 temperature, the power consumption of the compressor gradually increases, and the liquefaction fraction of CO2 BOG gradually decreases. Under 85% conditions, when the ambient temperature is 0°C and the temperature of node C-4 is -9°C, the liquid fraction of CO2 BOG reaches the maximum, which is 74.46%, and the power of Compressor-1 is the minimum, which is 40.90 kW. According to this, the optimum temperature of node C-4 under various working conditions is determined. The exergy efficiency model is established, in an 85% ship working condition with the ambient temperature of 40°C, and the exergy efficiency of the system is the maximum, reaching 59.58%. Therefore, the CO2 BOG reliquefaction system proposed in this study could realise effective utilisation of liquid ammonia cold energy.

    The method used to extract copper from its ores depends on the nature of the ore. The main process currently to separate copper from sulphide ores is the smelting process. The concentrated ore is heated strongly with silicon dioxide (silica), calcium carbonate and oxygen enriched air in a furnace or series of furnaces which is carried out using the injection of the air for oxidation the Fe and Si present in the raw material. Oxygen can be produced using several different methods. One of these methods is Air separation process, which separates atmospheric air into its primary components, typically nitrogen and oxygen, and sometimes also argon and other rare inert gases by cryogenic distillation. In this paper, simulation of air separation units (ASUs) was studied using Aspen Hysys®. The obtained simulation and model was validated with the operational data from the Oxinor I of Air Liquide S.A Plant. The ASU was divided into subsystems to perform the simulations. Each subsystem was validated separately and later on integrated into a single simulation. An absolute error of 1% and 1.5% was achieved between the simulated and observed the process variables(s). This indicated that Aspen Hysys®  has the thermodynamic packages and required tools to perform simulations in cryogenic processes at industrial scale.

    In this paper, different methods of oxygen production are characterized. The main attention is focused on the use of polymer membranes. Hybrid method is proposed in the process of oxygen production. Membrane is used in the first stage of this method, while in the second one, the cryogenic process is chosen. The calculations of the membrane parameters have been made in Aspen software. The characteristic values for the membrane separation process such as oxygen recovery rate and permeate purity have been determined. Various systems have been analyzed. It has been calculated that energy consumption in the process of cryogenic oxygen production reaches 0.2 kWh/kgO2 or even 0.19 kWh/kgO2 in the membrane process using a vacuum pump, and in the near future, with the improvement of the membrane properties it will be limited to 0.15 kWh/kgO2.
    W artykule scharakteryzowano różne metody produkcji tlenu. Główną uwagę skupiono na wykorzystaniu membran polimerowych. W procesie produkcji tlenu zaproponowano metodę hybrydową, w której w pierwszym stopniu stosuje się membranę, zaś w drugim proces kriogeniczny. Obliczenia membran wykonano przy wykorzystaniu programu Aspen. Wyznaczono charakterystyczne wielkości dla procesu separacji membranowej takie jak stopień odzysku tlenu i czystość permeatu. Analizowano różne układy. Obliczono, że przy zastosowaniu pompy próżniowej w procesie membranowym energochłonność kriogenicznego procesu wytwarzania tlenu może wynieść 0,2 kWh/kgO2 lub nawet 0,19 kWh/kgO2, zaś w najbliższej przyszłości wraz z polepszeniem się właściwości membran może być ograniczona do 0,15 kWh/kgO2.

    Opis:
    Populus is a genus that contains numerous taxa that are often difficult to identify. They are grouped into six sections which are mainly based on the differences in the structure of flowers and leaves. Nevertheless, other features are also of great importance in identifying individual sections. In this paper, individual sections are characterized. Two subsections within the Populus section (syn. Leuce Duby) are distinguished, due to the clear differences between white poplars and aspens. The sections are as follows: sect. 1. Abaso Eckenw. (mexican poplar), sect. 2. Turanga Bunge (arid and tropical poplars), sect. 3. Leucoides Spach (bigleaf poplars), sect. 4. Aigeiros Duby (cottonwoods and black poplar), sect. 5. Tacamahaca Spach (balsam poplars), sect. 6. Populus, with two subsections: 6a. Populus (white poplars) and 6b. Trepidae (Dode) Tamm (aspens).

    The economic significance of aspen Populus tremula L. is only marginal, which is the main reason for its low share in the structure of stands. However, aspen can play a decisive ecological role as a pioneer tree in the succession of forest communities and may decrease the occurrence of pathogenic fungi. Aspen is also dying out and in order to determine possible biotic causes, we examined taxa of fungi using classical and mo- lecular methods in the area of the Czerwony Dwór Forest District, Subdistrict Rogale, compartments 74b and 75j. The health of aspen trees and the quantitative and qualitative structure of microorganisms associated with Armillaria spp. was evaluated. Based on our health assessment of the aspen, we conclude that the main reason for its dying out is the intensification of root rot, which is a result of Armillaria spp weakening the trees. In the general pool of Armillaria-associated microorganisms, sapro- trophs were dominating, and the fungus Fomitopsis pinicola commonly inhabited the poplar stems, whereas pathogen antagonists comprised the lowest proportion. In the quantitative and qualitative structure of fungi found in rhizomorphs, the composition of ecological groups inhabiting stumps was found to be favourable nevertheless. The increasing frequency of pathogens on the logs is a major premise for removing trees affected by Armillaria, because aspen stumps are a good food base for A. cepistipes and A. ostoyae which ultimately spread within the stand. Treatment of stumps with preparations stimulating the decomposition of wood is not recommended for logs that form the food base for pathogenic fungi.
