Opis:
This study aims to examine the communicative Arabic teaching methods currently used in Korean universities that extend beyond MSA to promote learner understanding and awareness of colloquial Arabic dialects. Arabic is characterized by a diglossic linguistic situation, which means that it consists of both diverse colloquial dialects used in different regions and social classes, and the written standard of Modern Standard Arabic. Recent trends in the field of language education have been moving toward a communicative approach to instruction. Since both MSA and spoken Arabic are important language variants that cannot be ignored, university curricula should integrate both variants into language courses. In the spoken Arabic education awareness survey conducted in the present study, the majority of the respondents answered that they wanted to increase the number of spoken Arabic classes offered at their university. Concerning colloquial Arabic, the majority also answered that they preferred the Egyptian dialect, followed by the Gulf and Levantine dialects. In terms of the timing of colloquial Arabic instruction, most respondents answered that they thought it should start in third year or in second year at university. It is also important to develop textbooks and other teaching and learning materials to aid the efficient instruction of spoken Arabic, which will give students the communicative skills necessary to be effective and competent communicators regardless of where they travel, study, or work in the Arab world.

The large number of words from Arabic found in modern Spanish is proof of the deep influence Arabic has had on the Spanish language. Historical sociolinguistic processes which have lasted to the present day indicate that the influence of Arabic culture has been neither brief or superficial. Instead, it has, and continues to have great significance for the language situation of Spain. Much linguistic research has shown how loans from Arabic have been assimilated as they have become part of the lexical resources of modern Spanish. Arabic culture and civilization in the Iberian Peninsula (711-1942) above all involved the sciences, literature, art, architecture, engineering, agriculture, the military, medicine. At that time, Al-Andalus was one of the most influential European centers of science and cultural exchange in Europe. Contacts between Arabic and the Romance languages found in the Iberian Peninsula resulted in numerous loans both from Arabic to the Romance languages and from the Romance languages to Arabic. These topics have been the subject of extensive research conducted from historical, cultural and linguistic points of view. Despite the existence of numerous works concerning Arabic loans, this area requires, further, deeper research. In this article, selected issues concerning Arabic loans in Spanish are analyzed as are the adaptive processes they have undergone and the level of their integration into Spanish. The basis of the analysis is made up of oral and written texts collected in the Corpus de Español del Siglo XXI [CORPES XXI, RAE] – a corpus of contemporary Spanish from the 21st century.

When it comes to Basran and Kufan grammarians, there is no dearth of studies, but nevertheless we are mostly left with rather general statements concerning the nature of both schools of Arab grammatical thought. In this article, after a short summary of the current state of research, an extract from a 12th century compilation of disputes between Basran and Kufan grammarians - Al-Insaf f i masa"il al-hilaf bayna al-basriyyin wa-al-kufiyyin by Ibn al-Anbari - is put under examination. The discussed extract is a chapter dedicated to the disagreement on the etymology of the word ism and it gives us a worthwhile overview on various aspects of medieval Arabic grammatical thought, and helps us understand the nature of the conflict between the two competing schools.

Natural Language Inference (NLI) is a hot topic research in natural language processing, contradiction detection between sentences is a special case of NLI. This is considered a difficult NLP task which has a significant influence when added as a component in many NLP applications (such as question answering systems and text summarization). The Arabic language is one of the most challenging low-resources languages for detecting contradictions due to its rich lexical semantics ambiguity. We have created a data set of more than 12k sentences and named it ArNLI; it will be publicly available. Moreover, we have applied a new model that was inspired by Stanford's proposed contradiction-detection solutions for the English language. We proposed an approach for detecting contradictions between pairs of sentences in the Arabic language using a contradiction vector combined with a language model vector as an input to a machine-learning model. We analyzed the results of different traditional machine-learning classifiers and compared their results on our created data set (ArNLI) and on the automatic translation of both the PHEME and SICK English data sets. The best results were achieved by using the random forest classifier, with accuracies of 0.99, 0.60 and 0.75 on PHEME, SICK, and ArNLI respectively.

Brought up for discussion are problems of general and particular mor(pho)phonology. First, some linguistic terms are clarified, and the status of morphophonology as a linguistic subdiscipline is considered. The particular morphophonological part, referring to Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and Tunisian Arabic (TA), is topic oriented and it treats in succession: the structure of the verb forms, the relation of homoradicality (homolexicality) specifying the corresponding paradigmatization, and the intra- and interparadigmatic relations. In terms of the former of these relations the concept of morphoneme is defined, and among the latter morphophonological convergence and analogy as well as thematogen homoaffixality are distinguished. Finally, the dynamics of morphophonological space, morphonemic and morphonic representations are touched upon.

Opis:
The Arabic language was lauded in Poland as early as 1844 by M.D. Theodore Tripplin (1812?–1881) in his book entitled Wspomnienia z podróży (Memoirs of Journeys). Tripplin was a Polish physician and writer who visited many oriental countries during his numerous journeys. He learnt Classical Arabic and Maghrebi Arabic in Morocco (1843). Later he travelled to and lived in Turkey (1859), Palestine (1859, 1873–1875), Egypt (1859) and Algeria (1843, 1859). In his praise of the Arabic language, Tripplin explains that it is ‘a beautiful and comprehensible language’ (Pol. piękny, zrozumiały język) and he believes that everybody should learn Arabic, as it is not possible to appreciate the Arabs and their culture without the knowledge of their mother tongue.

The term glocal has been used to describe phenomena that simultaneously blend both global and local elements (see Featherstone, Lash, & Robertson, 1995, p. 101). Nowhere is this more evident than in the existence of 3arabizi, itself a blended language composed of English and Vernacular Arabic, written in Latin letters but using arithmographemes, that is, numerals as letters to represent hard-to-transliterate sounds because they do not exist in English (see Bianchi, 2012).1 As part of a doctoral study investigating online language choice involving Arabic and English, this paper examines the unique stylistic and topical functions of 3 arabizi when compared with its linguistic forbears, that is, Arabic and English in a multilingual web forum. The findings indicate that 3arabizi is used for more informal, intimate and phatic communication than either Arabic or English, though these latter two languages or codes are not entirely formal in form and purpose either.

The presence of Arabic loans in Swahili has not become subject of reliable corpus-based analyses so far. The in-fluence of Arabic language on Swahili can be investigated in literary sources, but reference to whether writers are Muslims or not is essential for their differentiation. This article intends to investigate the presence of Arabic in contemporary prose texts written by Tanzanian authors from Zanzibar and from mainland. The electronic corpus has two sets, Tanzanian cor-pus and Zanzibarian corpus respectively which are almost equal in size. The reference list of Arabic loans has been ex-tracted from two published sources. Using Concordance, a concordance software for text analysis, the frequency of words representing grammatical classes is tested. Differences in the two corpora have been indicated, as well as some shared occurrences of items of Arabic origin (mostly adverbs and conjunctions).

The author of the present paper, however, believes that there are still numerous language phenomena to study within the lyrics of the Bollywood songs. The present text is dedicated to research of the Perso-Arabic lexica in these songs over the period of 80 years (1940–2020). It also analyses the frequency of the Perso-Arabic forms as opposed to native Indo-Aryan ones. Particular attention is paid to the forms of the highest frequency, especially the Persian word dil.

Reformatory ideas of Rifā‘a at-Tahtāwī inscribed into an interesting discussion which has been going on in the Arabic and Muslim world since the beginning of the 19th century. The discussion centred around very important matters concerning the political system: social and political reforms, comparison of the representative system and democracy with their antithesis, despotism. The debate searched for the ways out of stagnation and backwardness, which essentially included the reform of the educational system – an idea emphasised by all thinkers. Rifā‘a at-Tahtāwī’s objective was to find the answer to the basic question vexing the representatives of the Muslim world: the question about the causes of its fall and backwardness and the basis of European supremacy, considering the role of oppressive governments, anachronistic state structures, lack of modern school system, among others. The polemic crystallizes but most of all – crystallisation of the ideas and notions concerning the relationship between tradition and modernity.

Despite growing interest in the impact of computer-mediated communication on our lives, linguistic studies on such communication conducted in the Arabic language are scarce. Grounded in Relevance Theory, this paper seeks to fill this void by analysing the linguistic structure of Arabic religious posts on Facebook. First, I discuss communication on Facebook, treating it as a relevance-seeking process of writing or sharing posts, with the functions of ‘Like’ and ‘Share’ seen as cues for communicating propositional attitude. Second, I analyse a corpus of around 80 posts, revealing an interesting use of imperatives, interrogatives and conditionals which manipulate the interpretation of such posts between descriptive and interpretive readings. I also argue that a rigorous system of incentives is employed in such posts in order to boost their relevance. Positive, negative and challenging incentives link the textual to the visual message in an attempt to raise more cognitive effects for the readers.

The Arabic lexicon is built on consonantal roots. Unlike agglutinative languages, it uses internal flexion. However, a significant part of modern Arabic scientific terminology is borrowed from Western languages, especially French and English. Extensive borrowing of this kind risks the emergence of two distinct subsets within the Arabic lexicon: a. the general vocabulary includes the words used by everyone in everyday life. This vocabulary is built on consonant roots, mainly with three consonants. Unlike French and English dictionaries, Arabic dictionaries are organized by roots and not by entries in alphabetical order. ; b. the specialized vocabulary includes the terms of scientific and technical disciplines used by specialists in their fields. This vocabulary is built on syllables like the vocabulary of European languages. This text will examine the problems of extensive register-specific lexical borrowing, and the risk of fracture that this presents.

This study elicited Arabic students’ perceptions regarding their language-learning strategy preferences (LLSPs). A sample of 120 undergraduate Arabic students participated. Data were collected through a questionnaire and interviews. The findings reveal that students tend to adopt a holistic view of the learning task and relate it to real-life, personal experience. Participants selected interaction with the teacher, speaking, and flashcards as their most preferred application-directed learning strategies. These selections demonstrate that Arabic students desire to be proactive in order to make the language more concrete for them, to enhance their performance, and to develop language skills that will last a lifetime. Whereas advanced level participants preferred interaction with the teacher, speaking, flashcards, and working individually, beginner level participants preferred learning grammar and group work. The empirical evidence from this study could have implications regarding theoretical models of effective Arabic language instruction, Arabic teacher education programs, and curriculum development.

Opis:
The present study examines Arabic legal phraseology formation from the standpoint of positive law and jurisprudence. It claims that phraseological constructions in Arabic legislative and statutory texts are largely influenced by the translation process of Roman law texts. However, scholarly literature still relies to some extent on formulae used in the Islamic jurisprudence. To illustrate this, three examples of legal principles anchored in Islamic jurisprundence, known as legal maxims, are discussed along with their corresponding expressions in positive law in modern-day Arabic. Ultimately, the purpose of this paper is twofold: firstly, to demonstrate that the phraseology present in many Arabic positive laws stems from a historical translation process that started in the beginning of the 20th century; secondly to emphasize the significance of textual genre awareness in legal translation. Concretely, the introductory section provides an overview of recent studies that have addressed legal phraseologisms. It is followed by a section on the historical role of translation in the construction of certain phraseologisms. The general legal principles of (a) burden of proof, (b) presumption of innocence, and (c) the pacta sunt servanda principle are then examined in order to shed light on the influence of both the Civilist tradition and Islamic jurisprudence on the use of legal Arabic today, as well as to demonstrate how the translation of phraseologisms is dependent on the parameters of genre. The analysis leads to the conclusion that proper use of phraseologisms, whether in drafting or translation, is closely linked to knowledge of phraseology formation and the historical influence of translation.
