Opis:
On the possible sources of the apocryphal motif “Satanael refuses to bow to Adam” in one early Christian passionThe article discusses the medieval literary works containing one of the variants of the apocryphal motif “the fall of the Rebel Angel from Heaven,” where Satanael calls himself “a fire flame” and refuses to bow to Adam, who was created “from mud.” A variant of this motif is found in the Slavonic version of an early anonymous Passion of St. George, while its Latin, Coptic and Ethiopian versions contain a more simplified variant – the reason for the refusal of the angel is his superior position in comparison to man. It seems possible that the Slavonic version preserved the original variant of the motif, known in the same form in only two more works – the Greek-Slavonic Apocalypse of Baruch (3 Baruch) and the Syriac Cave of Treasures, both of which preserved archaic features, whereas the Latin and the Oriental versions show traces of later changes. If this is indeed the case, the replacement of the earlier version occurred at a very early stage of the development of the text, probably already during the circulation of the Passion in Palestine or in Sinai. O możliwych źródłach apokryficznego motywu „Satanael odmawia złożenia hołdu Adamowi” w pewnej wczesnochrześcijańskiej pasjiW artykule przedstawiono średniowieczne dzieła literackie, zawierające jeden z wariantów motywu apokryficznego – upadek z nieba zbuntowanego anioła, w którym Satanael nazywa siebie samego „płomieniem ognia” i odmawia złożenia hołdu stworzonemu z błota Adamowi.

Apocryphal stories of Adam related to the subjects of the Paradise lost, Adam’s repentance and expulsion from Eden, life of Adam and Eve after the expulsion, the manuscript that Adam gave to Satan, the Holy Cross story – all these subjects can be called the single Adamic text. This intertestamental texts includes Story of how many parts Adam was created from, Adam’s Handwriting, Story of the Cross Tree, Story of Adam and Eve, Adam’s Lament. In Old Russian manuscripts these texts were not necessarily clearly divided from one another, they were often copied as a single set related to the first man and woman. Author had like to look in more detail into the lament of Adam. The Old Testament says nothing about the penance and lament of Adam after his and Eve’s expulsion from Eden. However, the apocryphal Old Russian version (Confession of Eve) mentions his crying and lamenting. Another genre of the Adamic text (apart from prayer, narration, and lament) is the question-and-answer erotapocritical apocryphal literature in the form of riddles and solutions. For example, in the wellknown apocryphal ‘Talk of three Holy Hierarchs’, the text known in different versions to the southern Slavs since the 12th century, which has a long literary tradition in Russia well into the 19th century, there are riddles concerning Adam. The theme of Adam in Old Russian literary and oral traditions is present in several genres: narrative, spiritual verse, riddles.

Opis:
The New Testament apocryphon Didascalia Domini is one of the least known. Its original was written in Greek, according to François Nau, at the end of the 7th century. Relatively early it was translated into Old Church Slavonic. At present five copies of this translation are known, stretching from the 13th to the 15th century. Three of them belong to the Serbian redaction, one each to the Russian (East Slavic) and to the Middle Bulgarian redaction. According to Michail Nestorovič Speranskij the translation originated in Bulgaria. The Greek copies, the oldest of which stems from the 11th century, have divergent final chapters. Moreover, the Slavic translation has yet another ending not corresponding to any of the Greek texts. The textological analysis of the five Slavic copies makes it possible to get an idea of their mutual relationship. On the basis of the linguistic archaisms of the text one can surmise that the translation has been made in Eastern Bulgaria during the 11th century. At the end of the paper there is a critical edition of the Slavic text.

Today’s development of spiritual life of humanity is marked by the phenomenon of appeal or returning to certain aggregate of religious and occult knowledge. Our culture has a tendency to oscillation between extremes, in particular, examining technical progress both as a means of liberation of humanity or as a means of oppression of that humanity. Analyzing the problem of essence and maintenance of the «removed literature», mainly literature apocrypha’s, we can see in it also an attempt to resist that technique and technologies which dominated from the 16th to the 18th centuries. In research of the Russian and Ukrainian scientists and ethnographers of the 19th century the concept of “otrechennaya literature”, and sometimes “zapreschennaya literature” was widespread . It underlines that position which was occupied by this literature in a civilized manner. The removed literature played an important role in a domestic culture in general, and in becoming of world view and religious consciousness, in particular. Already from the beginning of the 19th century, the Ukrainian and Russian researchers of history of orthodoxy, specialists in folk-lore and linguists appealed to the study and analysis of enormous layer of forbidden official state structures and church organizations of literature. In the middle of the 19th century, national consciousness of Ukrainian thinkers aimed to lead to originality and originality of domestic culture on European space. In fact, then, in a scientific environment westeuropian istoriosophical and philosophical systems, in particular hegelian, shellingian and the like spread and adopted, and scientists, welldisposed to uncritical borrowing, considered it necessary to underline it as an old historical tendency, as something inevitable. Today the theme of research of our cultural and historical inheritance attempts to find our real place in European history. Among the array of the translated literature a large role was played in the spiritual constituent of our culture calculation of Palei, “Secret secret” or “Aristotle’s vrata” (vrata in understanding are sections or heads), “Shestokril”, “Lestvica”, calculation of Astrology and Zodii and others like that.

Opis:
The aim of this article is the reconnaissance of the literature of the subject, preliminary reference of the general knowledge to the apocryphic material, and indicating further line of research into the ways of functioning of the passive participles in the texts of the Old Polish Apocrypha of the New Testament. The construction of the passive participles was described, and particular attention was paid to disappearance of the opposition between the passive participles of the present and past tense, to nearly complete disappearance of the word formations with -m-, as well as to the change of the value of the category of voice (passive meaning of the active participles and active meaning of the passive ones) and grammatical aspect (perfective meaning of the participles build on the stems of the imperfective verbs, and vice versa). The preliminary reconnaissance of the syntactic functions of the passive participles in the apocryphic material demonstrated that in the simple (noun) inflection they perform primarily the function of centres of predication – autonomously or as predicatives in substantive predicates, while in the complex inflection primarily perform a function of an attribute, and secondarily that of a subject or complement. The issue was also raised of probable origin of the impersonal verb forms (or impersonals) as continuants of the nominative singular neuter passive participles in the simple inflection. Detailed quantitative and qualitative study was announced, also with the use of a statistical method, after subsequent stage of the grant – grammatical annotation – is realized.

This article is the second and the last part of a series dedicated to the characteristics of a description of Christ’s seven words uttered on the cross as accounted in Old Polish biblical and apocryphal narrations. In part one, I focus on the origin of the words, the characteristics of Old Polish texts containing them. I highlight the most important differences in the narration of the specific fragments of Old Polish Passions of Jesus. Part two is entirely dedicated to the language of the fragments of Old Polish texts on Christ’s seven words uttered on the cross (ŻPJK, SCh and RD). First, I present the enumeration schemes in each apocrypha. They are strictly related to the tradition of religious instruction and teaching and are an attempt at sorting out the material. The article presents also the various ways in which Christ’s specific words are called. The regular word-forming structure of the modifiers affects the rhythmic form of the specific fragments of texts. Finally, I show how quotations from Christ were introduced into each apocrypha: how the utterances’ modal frame was shaped and what verbs of speech were used. It turns out that in each historic text, Christ’s words were treated differently: in the SCh, they were described most extensively and in the RD – least extensively but it is the RD where the enumerations are most precise with respect to the syntax, perhaps because the specific parts are at the smallest distance from each other. Christ’s seven words on the cross are least structured in the ŻPJK.

Opis:
This article is the first of two parts of a description of the motif of the seven words uttered by the crucified Christ in old Polish biblical and apocrypha narrations. The author presents the origin of the motif, characteristics of old Polish texts in which it occurred; the most important differences have been highlighted in the feature arrangement of the specific fragments of old Polish Passion of Jesus. The body of the article is represented by depiction of the sources of the seven words uttered by Christ on the cross, presentation of various ways of medieval scribes using the Holy Scriptures and an attempt to capture the motif severing itself from the original source. While the words uttered by Jesus on the cross come from the Gospels, neither of the four evangelists confirmed all of them. The chronology of the words is also arbitrary. In all old Polish apocrypha containing a description of Christ’s death on the cross, the motif of the seven words plays an important role and has been analysed with respect to the content and the vocabulary. The second part of the characteristics will be devoted to the linguistic development of the description of the motif in question.

The article is devoted to the Latin poem De spledidissimo Christi Jesu triumpho carmen by Martin Kromer who was one of the biggest writers of the Polish Renaissance. A theme of the work is time when Jesus Christ became alive again three days after his death. The theme are also miraculous events which took place after his Resurrection. The poet is supplementing records of the Gospel, introducing into his poem the action which isn’t complicated. He is talking about guards who stood by the grave. He is also describing the reaction of the nature which expressed its sadness because of the death of the Saviour. In the context of the report on the Resurrection, the poet is referring to the figures of ancient world belonging both to mythology, as well to history. In his artistic work Kromer isn’t presenting typical Apocrypha, he proposes a different perspective, having only character of the Apocrypha.

Judaism has never recognized Tobit as a canonical book, perhaps because of its roots in the northern Israel. Its reflections in the New Testament are scarce. Ancient Christian witnesses are usually favorable to the canonicity of the book of Tobit. It is present in many ancient biblical manuscripts (a, B, A, more then 30 minuscules). It was quoted by at least 79 authors, by many as Scripture. Some canon lists include it, other ones does not – when they are influenced by the Jewish canon. Some authors who failed to list Tobit in the canon have quoted it as Scripture. Accordingly, arguments for the canonicity prevail. Later ages accepted Tobit as canonical book. Protestants, despite some initial positive interest, have eliminated it. Tobit is canonical in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. It contains valuable teachings, especially on family and marriage – it is the only biblical book concentrated on these subjects.

The instances where daughters are mentioned in the Greek books of the Old Testament are not numerous. They are interesting, however, and deserving of exegesis and interpretation. In Tobit and Ben Sira their relationship to fathers are stressed and this aspect is of importance, whether those relationships are good or strained. If the texts are compared with the Hebrew Bible, more light is thrown on the personalities of the daughters, and they are valued more highly. Some influence of the Greek civilization can be presupposed here. A link with the Mediterranean culture of honor and shame can also be traced, especially in Ben Sira.

It is commonly known that the Bible does not contain systematic hamartiology or satanology. Also the Biblical demonology depends on the historical development and the influence of neighbouring countries’ relig-ions.This article’s aim is to analyse the etymology and meaning of the con-cept of satan in the most popular texts directly referring to the figure of Satan (Book of Job 6 and Book of Zechariah 3).The author tried to confront fragments from the Job and Zechariah with the texts that were (re)interpreted satanologically in the intertestamental period and by early Christian theology (Isaiah 14,12-14 and Ezekiel 28,12-15) and also with the narration contained in Genesis 3, which is considered the key text concerning the so-called „fall” of man in the Christian theology. The analysis was completed by references to intertestamental texts.A text that proved particularly helpful in the reconstruction of the aetiology of sin was Adam's Repentance, known under various titles thanks to its copies in various languages, which represents the so-called Adamite tradition in theology (hamartiology). A number of similarities between the syncretic Biblical hamartiology and Adam’s Repentance were shown (among others, the common nature of the first sin committed by Satan and the first sin committed by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden).

The article presents the study of the short film Apocrypha by Andrei Zvyagintsev. The text is aimed at the interpretation of the movie in the context of the problem of memory, which is emphasised in the selected work in the explicit and implicit visual associations with the figure and poetry of Iosif Brodsky. The recognition of these characteristic elements in the structure of Zvyagintsev’s film has the influence on the perception of its meaning, leading the culturally aware recipient towards discovering its broad interpretative potential in view of the Russian literary tradition. The study is conducted using the comparative method of analysis. The core theory which constitutes the methodological foundation of the study is Astrid Erll’s concept of cultural memory expounded as intertextuality, i.e. the continuous building up of layers of texts, which are mediated, as well as her idea of transcultural memory, defined in the first instance as a process of fluctuation between the individual and collective level of remembering. Attention is turned to the motifs, which are characteristic both for Brodsky’s and Zvyagintsev’s poetics, such as the aquatic symbolism, temporal and topographical relationships, chromatography of cold colours etc. The application of the selected methodology in the presented discussion allows for exposing the dynamics of the changing nature of culture, which becomes the container of the social and territorial fluctuations of memory.

Opis:
The Apocrypha does not mention animals very often, but it does show their role and perception among the first Christians. Domestic animals can be converted, at the same time losing their predatory instincts. The Acts of the Apostles contain stories about miracles performed by animals, which they used in therir sermons. Inasmuch as the content of the Bible serious, the Apocrypha has no shortage of fantastic miracles and magical situations typical of this literature. It is essential to consider these stories in the context of the concepts prevailing at that time.
