Opis:
The anchoring heuristic refers to phenomena when an arbitrary number affects subsequent numerical estimations. Oppenheimer, LeBoeuf and Brewer (2008) showed that it is not necessary for the anchor to be a numerical value (i.e., the act of drawing lines of different length effectively shifts numerical estimations), yet current models describing the anchoring heuristic do not fully account for the mechanism of non-numerical anchoring. However, this effect shows similarity to the basic anchoring effect – obtained without the comparative question and based on the availability of the given number in working memory. In this study, we attempt to verify whether those two effect share the same psychological mechanism. In Experiment 1, we show that non-numerical anchoring based on magnitude priming cannot be obtained when the lines are just observed. The examined mechanism proves to be dependent on the act of drawing, displaying limitations similar to the basic anchoring effect, previously pointed out by Brewer and Chapman (2002). By using the same numerical anchors in different size formats, in Experiment 2 we showed that anchoring based on magnitude priming occurs even when the numerical values do not affect the estimations. The results are discussed in the light of a possible mechanism that underlies the investigated effect.

Opis:
Anchoring exercises on a training ship have a significant effect on the acquisition of ship handling skills. Furthermore, such training is also effective for the development of critical thinking and problem solving. The authors investigated this topic to develop effective training methods for anchoring exercises. We created a rubric for anchor training, and the instructor evaluated trainees based on the rubric items. These rubrics were effective for judging trainee performance. The effect of dialogue in group work was shown by comments from instructors and the trainees. Group presentations were also evaluated via student comments. After conducting the anchoring training in native language in the spring, the same exercise was conducted in English in the fall. Only English instructions were offered during the training exercise in the first year (2016). In the second year (2017), students took a brief e-learning course in English about anchoring before attempting the second exercise in English. According to instructor evaluations, the second session in 2017 saw a much greater improvement in trainee performance than did the second session in 2016. English practice in the e-learning course allowed students to focus more on practising the techniques they had learned previously when performing the second training exercise in English.

Opis:
The article is part of the design and research work conducted at the Gdansk University of Technology, Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology, in cooperation with a number of other research centres, which concerns offshore wind farms planned to be built in the Polish zone of the Baltic sea in the next years. One of most difficult tasks in this project is building suitable foundations for each power unit consisting of a tower and a wind turbine mounted on its top. Since the water regions selected for building those wind farms have different depths, there was need to study different possible technical variants of this task, with the reference to both the foundation structures themselves, and the technology of their transport and setting, or anchoring. The article presents the technology of towing, from the shipyard to the setting place, and installation of the foundation having the form of a floating platform of TLP (Tension Leg Platform) type, anchored by tight chains to suction piles in the waters with depth of 60 m.

Opis:
On one hand, Judgment and Decision Making (JDM) research reports a phenomena called the cross-modal effect, which shows that magnitude priming based on spatial attributes of a stimuli might influence numerical estimations. On the other hand, research directed at human cognition reports that processing of space and numbers may interfere. Despite different theoretical backgrounds, those two lines of research report similar results. Is it possible that the cross-modal anchoring and the interaction between space and number are just two manifestations of the same psychological effect, conceptualized within different paradigms? In Experiment 1 participants were asked to draw lines of different length and estimate numerosity of sets of dots presented for 100 ms. Based on current studies, magnitude priming is assimilated with subsequent numerical judgment. However, an unexpected contrast effect was observed in Experiment 1. Priming of “smallness” resulted in higher estimations of numerosity, while priming of “largeness” was associated with lower estimations. Short exposition time often leads to automatic attention processes, which could possibly account for the observed contrast effect. In Experiment 2 this assumption was tested, verifying potential differences between different exposition times (100 ms vs 300 ms). The same pattern of results was obtained. Findings of both experiments are discussed from the perspective of different anchoring paradigms and concepts related to space and number processing.

Opis:
The article applies the concept of anchoring, defined as the process of searching for footholds and points of reference which allows individuals to acquire socio-psychological stability and security and function effectively in a new environment, to explore complex, multidimensional and flexible adaptation and settlement processes among migrants from Ukraine in Poland. Based on 40 in-depth interviews and questionnaires with migrants resident in Warsaw and its vicinity, we argue that the traditional categories employed for analysing migrants’ adaptation and settlement such as 'integration' or 'assimilation' are not always adequate to capture the way of functioning and experience of contemporary Ukrainian migrants. Rather than traditional categories, we propose to apply the concept of anchoring which enables us to capture Ukrainians’ 'fluid' migration, drifting lives and complex identities as well as mechanisms of settling down in terms of searching for relative stability rather than putting down roots. The paper discusses the ambiguous position of Ukrainian migrants in Poland constructed as neither the strangers nor the same, gives insight into their drifting lives and illuminates ways of coping with temporariness and establishing anchors providing migrants with a sense of stability and security. This approach, linking identity, security and incorporation, emphasises, on the one hand, the psychological and emotional aspects of establishing new footholds and, on the other hand, tangible anchors and structural constraints. Its added value lies in the fact that it allows for complexity, simultaneity and changeability of anchoring and the reverse processes of un-anchoring to be included.

Opis:
Formulae used for description of anchoring energy of nematic liquid crystal aligned on solid substrates are reviewed. They are based on macroscopic approach considering the concepts of the easy axis and of the anchoring strength parameters. Properties of the modified formula proposed in our earlier article are illustrated by exemplary plots which allows for comparison with other formulae. The modified formula describes the dependence of energy on the azimuthal and polar deviation of director from the easy axis and is valid qualitatively for deviation of any magnitude.

The importance of innovativeness and competitiveness is rising and it is the essential condition for the survival in a global market. Especially it is vitally important for small countries (and their regions), which do not have the exceptional situation and position in the market, acknowledged products (services) or resources, even stable long-term traditions of innovation culture, etc. The present paper focuses on absorptive capacity, its development issues in regional innovation systems and well-being creation in a small country’s regions. For the purposes of the research, analyses were carried out, identifying reasons (or barriers), promoting (or limiting) innovative activities, impeding organizational propensities and desire to develop activities of knowledge access, anchoring and diffusion at the organizational and inter-organizational level. This paper reveals the experience of Lithuanian regions from the point of view of experts, representing institutions of science, business, innovation and business support. This paper represents the experience of partnerships (successful and failed) for the knowledge absorption in Lithuania and their connection to subsequent directions of organizational behavior and decisions. Furthermore, the author suggests main aspects for managers, seeking to maintain (gain) organizational absorptive capacity, corresponding to requirements and speed of the modern market.

Nowadays, a teacher of foreign languages is tempted to use the Internet in order to develop linguistic competencies of his or her students. The Internet satisfies their interests and intellectual needs and its use for learning a foreign language has some features of the natural method. However, there are some concerns about technology and connectivism - whether the mind is be able to cope with excess of information and memorizing. It has been proven that at early stages of learning a language the process of memorizing cannot be sped up, and information in the Internet is not fully used. Benefits emerge when the learner becomes linguistically independent, or has achieved at least B2 level and can both effectively build new knowledge and develop a foreign language. For the time being, the role of a teacher of foreign languages is helping the student in the didactic process by anchoring, guiding the research and organising the educational process.
