Opis:
The paper reports the adsorption of strontium(II) and americium(III) from aqueous solutions onto calcium alginate (CaA), barium alginate (BaA) and strontium alginate (SrA) beads. Adsorption process was studied in batch experiments as a function of the initial pH of the solution and the contact time. All sorbents were examined by the termogravimetric analysis (TG). Laboratory obtained spherical beads of CaA, BaA and SrA seem to be good metal sorbents from liquid radioactive wastes. A contact time of about 4 h and neutral pH of the initial aqueous solution have been proposed to be optimum conditions for Sr-85 and Am-241 removal from the contaminated solutions using alginate sorbents. Laboratory obtained beads of CaA, BaA and SrA are characterized by the decontamination factor (DF) equal to 85% for Sr(II) and 90% for Am(III).

Opis:
A new technique for the encapsulation of yeast cells by elimination of any thickening agent has been evaluated. The proposed procedure is based on the application of a concentrated suspension of cells which already has the sufficient viscosity to obtain spherical capsules with a semipermeable membrane. Measurements have been conducted which show that, for suspensions with yeast cell concentrations higher than 20% dry weight, apparent viscosity depends not only on the yeast concentration, but also on shear rate. The influence of sodium alginate and calcium chloride concentrations on membrane thickness has also been studied.

Opis:
An agar degrading bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa AG LSL-11 was acclimatized to alginate for the production of alginase. Production parameters such as pH, temperature, influence of simple carbohydrates and nitrogen sources, and effect of NaCl on growth and alginase production were carried out. Maximum growth was observed at pH 9.0 and 35 °C, while alginase was produced optimally at pH 9.0 and 30 °C. The alginase produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa AG LSL-11 was inducible by alginate, and repressed by other simple sugar when supplemented along with alginate in the medium. The bacterium did not require NaCl for growth and production of alginase. The activity staining of partially purified culture supernatant after native PAGE revealed the presence of a single alginase.

Opis:
In the presented research sodium alginate modified by ionic and covalent crosslinking in the form of hydrogel beads was examined. In the first step, sodium alginate was ionically crosslinked by treatment with calcium chloride. Different forms of crosslinked alginate were obtained depending on the calcium chloride concentration. The forms varied from shapeless gel to dense agglomerated spheres. The optimal structure were spherical beads separated from each other. Ionically crosslinked alginates were then subjected to covalent crosslinking with epichlorohydrin. For additional reinforcement the crosslinked beads of alginate were modified with cellulose nanofibers. The products were compared in terms of water absorption in the dry samples, their morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Calcium ions distribution in the composites was evaluated by energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis. In vitro biodegradation of the crosslinked alginates was also investigated.

Pervaporative separation properties of crosslinked chitosan and alginate membrane on ethanol-water mixture at room temperature was studied. The influence of crosslinking agents on the separation properties were discussed. Selected crosslinking agents were affected differently on used polymer matrices. The better separation properties were obtained for membranes crosslinked by phosphoric (V) acid. The highest pervaporation separation index (309.6 kg/m2·h) and separation factor (52.6) were obtained for phosphoric (V) acid crosslinked alginate membranes, however, the greatest total flux (12.4 kg/m2·h) obtained for phosphoric acid crosslinked chitosan membranes

Opis:
This research aims to determine the amount of addition of locust bean gum to produce the best characteristics of alginate grains. The research was conducted in January - February 2018 at the Fisheries Product Processing Laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University. The method that was used in this research is the experimental method with Completely Randomized Design with four treatments and three repititions. The parameters observed in this research include viscosity, gel strength, syneresis, stability, pH, water content, and ash content. The results of the research showed that the addition of locust bean gum in the alginate gel increases viscosity, gel strength, and decreases syneresis. The addition of 30% locust bean gum produced alginate grains with the best characteristics which had a viscosity of 337 cP, gel strength (), syneresis 3.10%, pH 3.10, moisture content 93.70%, and ash content 0.4%.

effective diffusivity
Opis:
Effective diffusivity (De) of cadmium compounds was calculated in the beads. The study was carried out using two methods: a shrinking core model (SCM) method and a newly developed method named conductometric. It turned out to be a simple and effective method for the calculation of effective diffusivity of Cd(II) in alginate sorbents. The De values obtained by the two methods depended on the alginate content in the beads. However, SCM, in contrast to the conductometric method, gave De values increasing with increasing alginate levels in the beads and lower than the molecular diffusivity of Cd(II), this being inconsistent with the mechanism of diffusion in porous carriers. Hence, the conductometric method can be considered as one giving more reliable results, compared with the SCM method. Moreover, diffusion retardation coefficients for the alginate beads were calculated. Enhanced content of the biopolymer in the beads caused retardation of Cd(II) diffusion in the beads due to the decreasing calculated retardation coefficients with the increasing alginate contents in the beads.

Opis:
The aim of the work was to decrease the costs of bioconversion process by using chip and simple chromatographic columns containing immobilized C. freundii cells during fermentation. The goal was also modification of medium to control of pH of process in these columns. The purpose of the study was also to ascertain the new systems of biopolymers used for encapsulation of bacterial cells. The stability of obtained membranes in different mediums has been examined. The waste glycerol conversion to 1,3-PD over continuous process has been analyzed as well. The results of the study showed that the double crosslinked alginate beads are better carriers than alginate capsules coated by chitosan during conversion of waste glycerol to 1,3-PD. Unfortunatrly these two kinds of capsules should not be used for continuous process and repeated bioconversions because of low mechanical properties of the beads. PDADMAC beads and modified (e.g. by additions) PDADMAC capsules should not be used for continuous and repeated bioconversions as well.
