Opis:
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) provides the ability to not only conform the radiation dose to the shape of the target thereby reducing dose to normal tissues, it also allows to deliver different doses each day to different parts of the target. This approach is known as a simultaneous integrated boost (SIB). This study aims that dosimetric parameters of SIB with IMRT treatment planning technique are compared with conventional treatment planning technique using NTCP for 2 head and neck cancer patients.

Opis:
Detailed knowledge about the temperature distribution achieved in the target area is essential for the development of magnetic hyperthermia treatments. However, the temperature inhomogeneity was found in all local hyperthermia studies. As a consequence of the impossibility of guaranteeing the temperature and thus the thermal dose distribution, hyperthermia is never applied as a single treatment modality. We suggest a model that enables the calculations and optimization of the spatial-time distribution of the temperature in the target volume (i.e. tumor) caused by magnetically heated elements: (i) arrays of clusters of iron oxides magnetite $(Fe_3O_4)$ magnetic nanoparticles, and (ii) arrays of magnetic needles. In order to find the spatial-time temperature distribution in tumor, the bioheat transfer equation is solved for the two above-mentioned arrays of magnetically heated sources embedded in the tumor. The temporal and spatial temperature distributions were calculated with regard to the effect of blood perfusion in the tumor. It is shown that a matrix of magnetic micro-needles injected in the tumor could provide rather uniform tumor heating with the center-edge temperature difference smaller than 3°C at any times during the magnetic hyperthermia treatments. The temperature profiles can be suitably adjusted by a proper choice of the magnetic nanoparticles arrangement.

Radiation damage effects represent one of the limits for technologies to be used in harsh radiation environments as space, radiotherapy treatment, high-energy physics colliders. Different technologies have known tolerances to different radiation fields and should be taken into account to avoid unexpected failures which may lead to unrecoverable damages to scientific missions or patient health.

Opis:
The "real time" technique of high dose rate brachytherapy of the prostate gland is described from the point of view of the medical physicist, as an illustration of modern radiotherapy techniques currently applied at the Centre of Oncology in Krakow. This technique, based on ultrasound imaging and on-line calculations of dose distribution around catheters inserted into the prostate volume in which a radioactive Ir-192 source is moved with the aid of an afterloading apparatus, is performed in operating-room conditions in close cooperation with the physician within stringent time limits.

Opis:
The analysis of retinal ganglion cell responses to electrical stimulation is invaluable way to understand how the retina reacts and develops. Artificial visual prosthetics have made progress to some extent. Although there are several studies about retinal ganglion cell responses in the literature, experimental findings and information about responses to special stimulation patterns for developing high-resolution visual prosthetics are quite limited. In this study, rabbit retinal tissue was stimulated by biphasic, monophasic and ramp function current pulses with various amplitudes and pulse widths in a set of in vitro experiments. Rabbit retinal ganglion cell responses and spike activities are comparatively analyzed based on the applied electrical stimulation parameters. We conclude that biphasic current pulses provide a lower stimulation threshold of 10 μA with shorter pulse widths than those obtained by monophasic stimulation. Additionally, despite the fact that ramp function stimulation patterns have remarkable potential for eliciting spike formation with low stimulation thresholds, biphasic stimulation is charge-balanced and more convenient for high-resolution visual prosthesis systems.

Opis:
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to analyse the influence of a cationic surfactant from the group of morpholine derivatives on the conformational dynamics of $CH_2$ group in acyl chain of DSPC. The presence of the surfactant causes a decrease in the DSPC phase transition temperature. This result suggests that the surfactant interactions with phospholipid molecules disturb the lipid layers. The Fourier transform infrared measurements were supplemented with tests of the environmental toxicity of the surfactant used.
