Opis:
Tetrahedral, highly hydrogenated amorphous carbon films were deposited using rf sputtering of graphite by a magnetron sputter source in Ar/CH_4 atmosphere. The optical band gap, Urbach energy and refractive index of the deposited films were studied as a function of the bias voltage applied to the substrate during deposition and gas pressure. The films were characterized by visible spectroscopy. The variation of the optical band gap is considered as the result of the transition from unsaturated graphitic sp$\text{}^{2}$ bonds to tetrahedral diamond-like sp$\text{}^{3}$ bonds in the film. The variation of the refractive index is correlated with the density and optical band gap of the films.

Opis:
The paper describes the results of a study of the influence of silver content on the absorption edge and optical band gap of the newly synthesized glasses of the $Ag_{x}(As_{40}S_{30}Se_{30})_{100-x}$ type for x=0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 5 at.% and of the corresponding films. The synthesis of bulk samples was performed in a rocking furnace from high-purity elemental components by a melt quenching method. Films were prepared from the synthesized bulk samples by pulsed laser deposition. Transmission spectra of the investigated samples were recorded at room temperature. The absorption edge and the optical band gap were determined by extrapolating the linear parts of the absorption spectra. It was found that the investigated range of Ag doping concentrations has a great influence on the absorption edge and optical band gap. Namely, with the increase of the silver content in the material the optical band gap showed a decrease. For films, it decreased from 2.02 eV, for the glass without silver, to 1.805 eV for the composition with 5 at.% Ag, whereas for the analogous bulk samples this decrease was from 1.84 eV to 1.609 eV.

Opis:
Thin films of Ge$\text{}_{100-x}$S$\text{}_{x}$ with different values of x are deposited on quartz substrates by a conventional thermal evaporation technique. The electrical conductivity of these films was measured. The experiments reveal that the electronic conduction is strongly composition dependent and is thermally activated with a single activation energy for x>40. A variable range hopping conduction mechanism seems to dominate when x=16 and 27. The optical absorption of the films is investigated using spectrophotometric measurements of the transmittance and reflectance in the wavelength range 200-3000 nm. All the studied compositions obey the Tauc relation concerning the non-direct transitions. The optical energy gap E$\text{}_{g}$ value increases with the increase in chalcogen content x. The Urbach parameter E$\text{}_{0}$ decreases from 310 meV to 149 meV as x increases from 16 to 70.

Opis:
Phosphate glasses having compositions $(59.5-x)P_2O_5-40MgO-xAgCl-0.5Er_2O_3$, where x=0, 1.5 mol.% is prepared using melt-quenching technique. Infrared, absorption and photoluminescence spectra of $Er^{3+}$-doped magnesium phosphate glasses have been reported. The amorphous nature of the host glass is confirmed by X-ray diffraction technique. Transmission electron microscope image confirms the existence of silver nanoparticles inside the glass matrix. The localized surface plasmon resonance band of silver is found to be located around ≈ 528 nm for the $Er^{3+}$ free sample. A frequency upconversion process from infrared to visible is observed on excitation with 797 nm radiation. Furthermore, an enhancement in the emission at 540 nm and 632 nm is found due to the local field effect of silver nanoparticles. Our findings may contribute towards the development of solid state laser and sensors.

Opis:
The work presents an application of two scanning optical techniques, i.e. optical profilometry and angle resolved scattering method. The first method measures the light reflected from a film during scan of the surface, while the second method measures light intensity as a function of the scattering angle. The angle resolved scattering and optical profilometry measurements, being complementary to the atomic force microscopy, give information about surface topography. Scattered radiation measured by angle resolved scattering and optical profilometry is a function of height and slope of microfacets. The analysis of images allows to determine the most important statistic surface parameters, like roughness, height distribution and autocorrelation length, in large wavelength range by the determination of power spectral density function. The fast Fourier transform of angle resolved scattering and optical profilometry images permits to determine the distribution of surface features in the inverse space, such as periodicity and anisotropy. In this paper the results obtained for porous SiO₂, SiO₂-TiO₂ blends, TiN and polymer thin films have been presented. The paper demonstrates the usefulness of the angle resolved scattering and optical profilometry for the surface and volume thin film inspection.

Thin films of hydrogenated amorphous silicon deposited on glass and crystalline silicon substrates by rf plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition at different rf power were studied using slow positron beam and the Raman scattering spectroscopy in order to verify the influence of that deposition parameter on the film defect structure and on the degree of disorder. By positron annihilation spectroscopy, it was found that there are mainly two types of defects in the films: large vacancy clusters or voids and small vacancy type defects. By micro-Raman spectroscopy it was observed that the degree of structural disorder is lower for the film with large vacancy clusters and this finding was related to structural relaxation process. Light soaking induced changes attributed to major atomic rearrangements were also observed.

The magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction in nanocrystalline grains in non-magnetic or magnetic matrix (nanoparticles or nanocrystalline materials) differ from their bulk properties. The interactions between atoms at the interface play the important role in these magnetic properties. In this paper the magnetic dipolar contribution to magnetostriction energy has been calculated for spherical crystal grains (of bcc and fcc symmetry) with interface layer of atoms possessing different magnetic moment. Total magnetoelastic energy of the sphere-interface system is a sum of magnetoelastic energy of the sphere, energy of the interactions between the sphere and the interface and also the energy of the interface. It was shown that magnetoelastic energy depends on the sphere size and interface thickness.

The goal of this work was to investigate the influence of rare-earth ions such as $Nd^{3+}$ and $Er^{3+}$ on the optical properties of tellurite glass of the $TeO_2-WO_3-PbO-La_2O_3$ system. The optical studies of the glasses comprised spectrophotometry (reflectance and transmittance) and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The spectrophotometric measurements yield a number of narrow absorption bands which correspond to characteristic transitions between the ground- and consecutive excited states of rare-earth ions. From ellipsometric studies, in turn, the dispersion of the refraction coefficient has been obtained which appears to be practically the same for the tellurite glass matrix and the matrix doped with $Nd^{3+}$ and $Er^{3+}$ ions.

Opis:
Bismuth (Bi) doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Bi) thin films were prepared on glass substrates by sol-gel spin coating technique using homogeneous precursor solutions, and effects of Bi doping on the structural and optical properties of ZnO were investigated. The crystalline of ZnO films shifted from polycrystalline nature to amorphous nature with Bi doping. The plane stresses (σ) for hexagonal ZnO and ZnO:Bi crystals were calculated according to the biaxial strain model. The Urbach rule was studied as a function of non-thermal component to the disorder (defects in crystal structures) which is especially observed in the case of non-crystal semiconductors. The calculated Urbach energies and steepness parameters of undoped ZnO and ZnO:Bi films varied between 44.33 meV and 442.67 meV, and 58.3 × $10^{-2}$ and 5.8 × $10^{-2}$, respectively. The Urbach energies of the films increased with an increase in the Bi doping concentration and a great difference was observed for 7.0 mol.% doping. The band gap values of the films exhibited a fluctuated behavior as a result of doping effect.

Opis:
This paper reports the synthesis, crystal structure, surface morphology, optical and electrical properties of Mg-doped Sn₂S₃ thin films deposited by spray pyrolysis technique. All the films exhibit orthorhombic crystal structure with a (211) preferential orientation. Crystallite size calculations based on the Debye-Scherrer formula indicated that the Sn₂S₃ crystallite size increases with Mg content from 27.97 nm to 33.58 nm. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that all the films were very smooth composed of nanoneedle and nanoplate shaped grains. The band gap energy of the films exhibits a blue shift from 1.94 eV to 2.09 eV with increase in Mg concentration. Resistivity values of the undoped and Mg-doped Sn₂S₃ films were found to be in the order of 0.1 Ωcm. From the obtained results it is observed that the Sn₂S₃ film coated with 2 wt% Mg concentration exhibits better physical properties.

A perovskite-type cobalt oxide, $Pr_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}CoO_3$ (PCCO), shows photoinduced phase transition. In this study, we successively irradiated two laser pulses with different intensities to PCCO and probed the transient change of the reflection at 2.0 eV. Assuming propagation of the two different photoinduced metallic states, we could reproduce the time profiles as well as the magnitude in the reflectance change, indicating the fabrication of the photoinduced multilayered thin film in $Pr_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}CoO_3$.

Slow dynamics of the initially photoinduced state has been observed by the pump-probe type time-resolved reflection spectroscopy in the charge separated phase of the half-filled strong dimer system, $Et_2Me_2Sb[Pd(dmit)_2]_2$ (dmit = 1,3-dithiol-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate). We have succeeded to reproduce the probe photon energy dependence of the time profile qualitatively in the time delay range from 10 ps to 1 ns assuming the dynamical expansion of the domain of the photo-induced dimer-Mott insulating phase in the host charge-separated one.
