Opis:
ZnO (0001) layers on sapphire (0001) substrates were fabricated by means of high temperature high vacuum magnetron sputtering. The layers were deposited onto a thin MgO buffer and a low temperature ZnO nucleation layer, which is a technology commonly used in MBE ZnO growth. This paper reports on using this technology in the sputtering regime.

Opis:
ZnO nanorods were grown by using the hydrothermal method on p-type Si (100) substrates with nanofibrous ZnO seed layers. Before the ZnO nanorods growth, nanofibrous ZnO seed layers were spin-coated onto the Si substrates. The structural and optical properties of ZnO nanorods were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and photoluminescence. The fibrous ZnO nanorods is possible due to the surface morphology of the nanofibrous ZnO seed layers. To investigate annealing effects of the ZnO nanorods, the post-annealing process was carried out at various temperatures ranging from 300 to 700C under argon conditions. The structural and optical properties of the ZnO nanorods were also affected by the post-annealing treatment.

Opis:
Two series of ZnO nanopowders obtained by a microwave hydrothermal method are examined. We used two different zinc precursors (zinc chloride (ZnCl$\text{}_{2}$) and zinc nitrate hexahydrate (N$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{6}$Zn·6H$\text{}_{2}$O)). Both types of nanopowders show a bright emission in a visible light, including the band edge emission, which indicates their good crystallographic quality. Results of scanning electron microscopy, photo- and cathodoluminescence investigations are presented.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was employed to characterize the surface chemistry and electronic properties of the $Zn_{1-x}Cd_{x}O$ semiconductor systems obtained at the different growth conditions. The effect of the growth conditions on the core and valence band spectra as well as room-temperature photoluminescence of the $Zn_{1-x}Cd_{x}O$ films was investigated and discussed. Behavior of the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy peaks indicated an increase of the cadmium and a depletion of the oxygen concentrations upon changing the Ar/$O_2$ gas ratio and dc power.

In this paper we review the results of our effort to grow layers and low-dimensional structures containing Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Μn$\text{}_{x}$Te diluted magnetic semiconductor with relatively high values of Mn molar fraction x. A high quality of the structures grown so far is demonstrated by making use of results of several selected experiments. In the case of the epilayers having bulk-like thickness with x ≥ 0.7 we discuss, in particular, the magnetic phase diagram as well as we report on collective spin excitation (magnons) observed in Raman scattering experiments. The discussion of the growth of different quantum wells, including rectangular, digital, parabolic and wedge quantum wells, is accompanied by a brief overview of their optical and magnetooptical properties. These results include first measurements concerning magnetic polarons in quantum wells embedded in Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te barriers with 0.4 ≤ x ≤ 0.8. Finally, we report on the present status of the search for dimensional effects in the spin-glass phase performed with the use of our specially designed superlattice structures.

Opis:
Reflectivity spectra for mixed crystals Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Fe$\text{}_{x}$Te with 0.00 ≤ x ≤0.05 were investigated. The measurements were carried out in the energy range 6.0-30.0 eV at 300 K. The influence of Fe$\text{}^{2+}$(3d$\text{}^{6}$) states on the changes in the energy positions of the reflectivity maxima E'$\text{}_{1}$ , E'$\text{}_{1}$ + ∆, c, d, e, f, h and i is analysed. The obtained results confirm the band structure diagrams published previously.

Opis:
The static and dynamic properties of excitons and trions in a 80 nm wide $Cd_{1-x}Mn_xTe/Cd_{0.7}Mg_{0.3}$Te quantum well with extremely small Mn content (x=0.00027) have been studied by means of time-integrated and time-resolved photoluminescence experiment at low and elevated temperatures. The trion binding energy has been estimated to be 2.6 ± 0.8 meV. The exciton and trion lifetimes have been measured to be ≈ 150 ps, and ≈ 200 ps, respectively. The temperature dependence of both lifetimes together with the multicomponent character of the PL decay process suggest a spatial localization of excitons and trions in the investigated quantum well.

Opis:
The structural, cohesive, and electronic properties of a fullerene-like $Zn_{n-x}Cd_{x}O_{n}$ (n=36) clusters have been investigated within the framework of the electron density hybride functional method (B3LYP) with a set of 3-21G(d) split valence basis functions. These clusters are used as a model in an investigation of the change in the band-gap width in the case of the substitution of Zn atoms by Cd atoms in the ZnO matrix in ZnCdO ternary structures. The presented investigations showed that a substitution of Zn atom to Cd (5.5, 11, 16.7, 22 and 33 at.% Cd) leads to reduction of cluster stability and monotonous decrease of energy gap (0.145, 0.259, 0.354, 0.436, 0.586 eV, accordingly).

In this work, we explored the influence of the low growth temperatures on the structural and optical properties of AlN films grown by plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition using trimethylaluminum and ammonia $(NH_3)$ plasma. Structural and optical results show that AlN films grown by self-limited plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition are polycrystalline at temperatures as low as 100C.

Opis:
The photoluminescence studies in CdTe/CdMnTe quantum wells are reported in the temperature range 10-300 K. The MnTe concentration in the barriers is x = 0.3, 0.5, 0.63 and 0.68. Thus the potential wells in our samples are very deep, of the order of ≈ 800 meV in the conduction band and ≈ 200 meV in the valence band in the case of the x = 0.68 sample. In spite of the large lattice mismatch (related to high x value) between the wells and the barriers the observed line widths are as narrow as 2 meV in the case of 100 Å. Clear manifestations of internal strain are observed. In particular, the temperature coefficient of the luminescence energies shows strong dependence on the width of wells.

Opis:
In this work we present a study of the temperature of the single magnetic atom embedded in a semiconductor quantum dot versus excitation power and magnetic field. This temperature is defined by the thermal distribution of spin states of single Mn ion, and results from its interaction with the neighborhood. This temperature was found to be much higher than the temperature of the thermal bath. Its dependence on the excitation power and magnetic field is discussed.

Temperature dependent photoluminescence and reflectivity spectra of excitons, singlet and triplet states of trions were studied in CdTe-based quantum wells at high magnetic fields. Interesting features of the exciton and trion spectral lines with altering temperatures are explained by analyzing the thermal population and the kinetics of the exciton-electron-trion energetic system.

Here we report the effect of the irradiation by 167 MeV $Xe^{26+}$ ions (in the fluence range up to 3× $10^{12}$ ions/$cm^2$) on the undoped and Cd-doped (0.4, 0.5 at.%) ZnO films deposited by radiofrequency magnetron sputtering. As-grown and irradiated samples were investigated by cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. It was found that the radiation causes a decrease in intensity of luminescent peaks and a redistribution of the radiative recombination channels. We revealed that the cadmium incorporation into ZnO lattice enhances the radiation resistance of ZnO film.

CdS nanocrystals were prepared using a standard colloidal route (co-precipitation chemical reaction) whereas modulation of the optical and structural properties was realized via surface coating the nanocrystals with ethylene glycol molecules using an in situ procedure. The as-produced nanocrystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, UV-absorption measurements and photoluminescence. The nanocrystal quality was revealed by the spectroscopic data, though the final product presents a mixture of both zinc blende (cubic) and wurtzite (hexagonal) phases. The X-ray data indicated that the concentration of the ethylene glycol used during the synthesis process modulates the nanocrystal size and the crystal phase of the end material.

The structural, cohesive and electronic properties of fullerene-like isolated Zn₄₄Cd₄O₄₈ cluster with consideration of CdO phase clusterization are studied in the frames of density functional theory B3LYP/3-21G(d). It is revealed that an enlargement of CdO phase content in Zn₄₄Cd₄O₄₈ cluster leads to nonlinear rapid increase in cohesive energy and cluster stability, as well as band-gap energy shrinkage.
