Opis:
The far-infrared photoconductivity of a semi-insulating GaAs sample was measured at 4.2 K as a function of magnetic field up to 7 T. Apart from a peak corresponding to the 1s - 2p$\text{}_{+1}$ transition of the hydrogen-like shallow donor, a well-pronounced structure was observed which does not appear in n-type GaAs.

Opis:
The first experimental evidence of the magnetic quantum oscillation in the photovoltaic effect of Pb$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Se p-n junctions is reported. The p-n junctions were obtained in Pb$\text{}_{1-x}$MnxSe crystals with manganese content, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.08 by introducing Cd donors by diffusion. Measurements were per formed between 5-85 K and in the presence of the magnetic field 0-7 T in the Faraday and Voigt configurations of the incident infrared radiation of various photon energies in the vicinity of the energy gap of a Pb$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Se. Strong oscillatory behavior of the photovoltage was observed as a function of the magnetic field intensity at a constant wavelength of the incident light. Using the model of Adler of the energy band structure modified by the exchange terms, and after identification of the initial and final states of the transitions, we derive the band parameters of the Pb$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Se crystals.

Opis:
Recent developments in physics of large gap II-VI Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors (DMS) studied by means of magnetooptical methods are reviewed. Applicability of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian to describe the ion-carrier interaction in new DMS materials is discussed. The paper includes anisotropy related phenomena, new type of bound magnetic polarons found in Van Vleck paramagnetic (Cd,Fe)Se and discusses application of magnetic field to study kinetics of Raman cascades in DMS.

The first magnetooptical studies comprising magnetoreflection, magnetoabsorption and Faraday rotation of CdTe-rich Hg$\text{}_{1-x-y}$Cd$\text{}_{x}$Mn$\text{}_{y}$Te are reported. The drastic disappearing of excitonic structure, for already very small Hg content, has been observed. The exchange parameters close to those for CdMnTe have been found.

Opis:
III-V semiconducting compounds in the presence of a magnetic field are considered. The 14 x 14 effective hamiltonian in the frame of 5-level model is obtained. Directional dependence of selection rules are obtained. Shallow donor levels in the frame of spherical 3-level model are also considered. New trial functions suitable for a whole range of magnetic field are proposed. It is found that the energy as well as the variational function of each magnetodonor level is a continuous function of the magnetic field.

Opis:
The paper concerns investigations of shallow centres in semi-insulating (SI) GaAs samples. A very sensitive measuring method - magnetophotoconductivity due to intra-shallow-donor transitions - was used. We report the behaviour of intra-impurity transitions as well as an additional structure in low magnetic fields for different far-infrared wavelengths (70.6 μm, 96.5 μm, 118.8 μm, 163 µm). The results are discussed in terms of a fluctuating potential from ionized centres in SI GaAs. The physical mechanism responsible for the low magnetic field structure is proposed.

The first observation of electric dipole spin resonance of donor electrons in Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te$\text{}_{1-y}$Se$\text{}_{y}$ in far-infrared magnetotransmission is reported. Modification of the donor wave function due to non-diagonal exchange interaction with localized magnetic moments and to magnetic fluctuations are believed to allow this resonance. Hopping magnetoconductivity studied in the same crystals shows a behavior typical for wide gap diluted magnetic semiconductors.

The spin-lattice relaxation (SLR) time of Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te with x=0.008 is measured directly under electron spin resonance condition in a magnetic field of 8.9 T, using a pick-up coil. The SLR times are measured for different sample temperatures between 3.0K and 35K and compared with data of a more diluted sample with x=0.002. The SLR times are shorter than expected for single spin SLR. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the SLR time does not show any of the characteristic behaviours for single spin SLR. Thus, the observed SLR times are explained by cross relaxation of single spins with spin clusters.

Faraday rotation in Hg$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te (x = 0.11) has been investigated experimentally over the temperature range from T = 8 K to 250 K using a Q-switched CO$\text{}_{2}$ laser. Due to the exchange interaction between mobile carriers and localized Mn ions, dramatic enhancement of Verdet coefficient at low temperatures has been observed. The values of Verdet coefficient V = 5585 rad T$\text{}^{-1}$ m$\text{}^{-1}$ at 8 K and V = 1745 rad T$\text{}^{-1}$ m$\text{}^{-1}$ at 80 K have been obtained for Hg$\text{}_{0.89}$Mn$\text{}_{0.11}$Te at 10.6 μm. The dependence of Faraday rotation on intensity of laser radiation has been observed. Intensity dependent Faraday rotation shows saturation for high laser power. Intensity induced rotation is qualitatively attributed to the dispersion associated with saturable absorption of laser radiation. The results obtained in this work indicate that Hg$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te is a suitable material for Faraday rotator at CO$\text{}_{2}$ laser wavelengths for high power laser beam.

Opis:
The present symmetry theory of optical phenomena makes it possible to determine each of 122 point symmetry groups both for non-dispersive as well as dispersive media. This is achieved by considering the symmetry breaking effect external fields (separately E and H) on the propagation of electromagnetic waves. The corresponding results are collected in Tables I-III. The way of measuring the relevant physical quantities is proposed. The point symmetry of a given sample is obtained by comparing the experimental results with their theoretical counterparts. The results given in Tables I-III can also be viewed as the discussion of the "canonical" solutions (effects) for a given symmetry K.

The spin-lattice relaxation in CdMnTe at 4.7 K has been measured at high magnetic fields up to 24.5 T. At fields, where the ground state of nearest-neighbor exchange coupled Mn pairs changes due to energy level crossing, an increase in the relaxation rate is observed. This is attributed to the change of relaxation of nearest-neighbor Mn pairs. It proves that not only large size Mn clusters are involved in the relaxation as it has been shown previously, but also Mn pairs. It shows as well that the mixing of pair states is quite effective.

Opis:
Theory of shallow donor in III-V semiconductors in the presence of magnetic field is reinvestigated. Considerations are performed within the 3-level Kane model. In order to avoid singularities caused by the Coulomb potential we divide it into short- and long-range components. The latter one is the slowly varying potential and contrary to the Coulomb potential it satisfies all demands for envelope function equation. The short-range part is contributing to a chemical shift. Calculation of energies of two possible spin states of ground donor level are then performed using variational method.

In this paper we present the results of an investigation of the 1s-2p$\text{}_{+}$ intra-shallow-donor transition by means of an extremely difficult magnetotransmission experiment performed on semi-insulating GaAs. We report the temperature dependence of the transition intensity. We noticed the absence in the absorbance spectra of a well-pronounced structure which is observed at low magnetic fields in photoconductivity measurements. The results are discussed in terms of a fluctuating potential from ionized centres in semi-insulating GaAs.
