Growth, crystallographic structure, electrical transport and magnetic properties of cubic Er pnictides and hexagonal Er silicide layers, epitaxially grown on semiconductors, are reviewed. Magnetoresistance anomalies observed at low temperatures are discussed in terms of a model developed for electron-magnetic moment interactions in antiferromagnetic systems.

Opis:
The Heisenberg isotropic exchange Hamiltonian with the nearest neighbour interactions for the ring of N = 12 nodes (the clock dial plate) with the spin 1/2 has been diagonalized within the manifold of all 66 two-magnon excitations from the ferromagnetic ground state. The spectrum consists of 5 full bands, i.e. bands defined over the whole Brillouin zone, and a single band which is doubly rarefied, i.e. defined only for even values of quasimomentum. The rarefied band is found to be dispersionless outside the centre of the Brillouin zone. It separates two bands of "weakly bounded" spin waves from two other which are "weakly antibounded". The last remaining band is situated below this collection of scattered spin waves, and describes two tightly bounded spin deviations. The spectrum exhibits dispersion, but it is degenerate (singlet and quintet) at the boundary of the Brillouin zone.

Racah-Wigner type of calculus is adapted to the system of two free electrons in a cubic box, confined to a single star p00 of quasimomentum. Various coupling schemes (LS-like, jj-like, and transitive) have been reviewed in analogy to the case of a free atom. Racah recoupling matrices are calculated explicitly, and their quantum-mechanical meaning is exposed in terms of octahedral multipoles.

Opis:
The sounds used in music have discrete spectra consisting of a fundamental frequency and of its integer multiples. This is the reason for an affinity of the sounds for which the ratio of the fundamental frequencies is given by a fraction of small integers. Two possible physical mechanisms for this affinity are discussed: (1) an influence of beats between some partial tones and (2) nonlinear interactions between partial tones. Some facts from the music theory are then explained as resulting from the invariance of the most consonant intervals between affine sounds against variations of the timbre and of the register. An analogy is indicated between the classical cadence and the lock-in effect in incommensurate crystals. The lecture is illustrated with extracts from the J.S. Bach Das Wohltemperierte Klavier, the W.A. Mozart sonata for piano KV 570 and a recitative from the Haendel Messiah.

Hysteresis loops of thin films of Fe$\text{}_{73.5}$Cu$\text{}_{1}$R$\text{}_{3}$Si$\text{}_{13.5}$B$\text{}_{9}$ (R = Nd, Gd, Ho, Y) alloys were studied by the magnetooptical Faraday method. The films were deposited by flash evaporation technique onto cooled glass substrates. Lanthanides were chosen as substitutes for niobium in the FINEMET type alloys. Coercivity, H$\text{}_{c}$, was determined from the easy- and hard-axis hysteresis loops. The as-deposited films containing Gd and Ho are characterized by rather low values of H$\text{}_{c}$ while the films with Nd and Y show a high isotropic value of H$\text{}_{c}$. Attempts were made to determine the conditions of the film annealing which would ensure the optimum soft magnetic properties of the films studied.

A characteristic feature of strongly correlated electrons is the appearance of low energy scales. They may result in heavy-quasiparticle excitations at low temperatures. Our understanding of these excitations has been considerably modified over the last few years. While it was originally thought that the Kondo effect is the sole source of heavy-fermion behavior, two additional mechanisms have been identified meanwhile. One is based on the Zeeman effect and occurs in Nd$\text{}_{2-x}$Ce$\text{}_{x}$CuO$\text{}_{4}$. The other is operative in the semimetal Yb$\text{}_{4}$As$\text{}_{3}$ and is based on nearly half filled one-dimensional Hubbard chains. In all three cases the low energy excitations result from spin degrees of freedom.

Gutzwiller variational ground states |Φ$\text{}^{G}$⟩ of π electrons, described by single-band half-filling Hubbard model, were determined for the molecules C$\text{}_{60}$ and C$\text{}_{70}$ and their energies and magnetic properties investigated. To construct these states two types of trial functions were used: generalized spin-density wave |Φ$\text{}_{SD}$⟩ and tight-binding wave |Φ$\text{}_{ΤΒ}$⟩. Our results evidently show that the Gutzwiller state |Φ$\text{}_{TΒ}^{G}$⟩ determined by means of function |Φ$\text{}_{ΤΒ}$⟩ has lower energy than the other investigated variational states |Φ$\text{}_{SD}^{G}$⟩. Mean values of the operators in the Gutzwiller states were calculated using Monte Carlo method.

We show that the mean-field phase diagram of the realistic spin-orbital model derived for a perovskite lattice in three dimensions consists of four different classical magnetic phases which become degenerate at orbital degeneracy. The quantum fluctuations are drastically enhanced and suppress the classical long-range order, providing a new mechanism to stabilize a quantum spin liquid near the multicritical point.

Fe/Si multilayers with strong bilinear and biquadratic couplings were investigated. A complex structure revealed by the Mössbauer spectroscopy corresponds to multimode ferromagnetic resonance spectra in a non-saturated state. Simple dispersion relations for antiferromagnetic coupled bilayer structures are shown to be inapplicable to the Fe/Si multilayers with a strong biquadratic component to the antiferromagnetic bilinear coupling.

We report on structural, magnetic, and GMR properties of permalloy/Au multilayers where permalloy = Ni$\text{}_{83}$Fe$\text{}_{17}$, deposited by face-to-face sputtering onto Si(111) substrate. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed a good structural quality of our multilayers. The samples were characterised with vibrating sample magnetometer, longitudinal magnetooptical Kerr effect and giant magnetoresistance measurements. It was determined that our multilayers are magnetically very soft with H$\text{}_{c}$ ≈ 1 Oe and show uniaxial anisotropy with H$\text{}_{K}$ ≈ 5 Oe. For gold sublayer thickness d$\text{}_{Au}$ close to 1.1 nm the antiferromagnetic coupling is present in very narrow Au thickness range (≈ 0.2 nm). Despite a good structural quality of samples relatively small giant magnetoresistance value (1.2% at room temperature) was found. It is due to non-perfect aniferromagnetic coupling caused by pinholes.
