Opis:
Single crystals of TbPdBi, a representative of the group of half-Heusler bismuthides, were studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, magnetostriction and thermal expansion measurements. The compound was characterized as an antiferromagnet with the Néel temperature T_{N} ≈5.3 K. Neutron diffraction experiment confirmed the antiferromagnetic ordering and yielded the propagation vector k=(1/2,1/2,1/2). Remarkably, this k vector is in accord with the recently developed theory of antiferromagnetic topological insulators.

The present work is focused on the investigation of magneto-structural correlations in Cu(en)Cl₂ and Cu(tn)Cl₂. A comparative study of powder susceptibility and magnetization of both compounds revealed that the replacement of tn by en ligand did not affect single-ion properties. On the other hand, the structure modification led to significant reduction of magnetic interactions as well as lowering the crystal symmetry. The impact of the high pressure on magnetic properties of the compounds is discussed.

In this article we focus on impact of micromagnetic structures on magnetoelectricity of multiferroics. We discuss physical mechanisms of magnetoelectric coupling considering domain walls and spin cycloids. We review the progress on multiferroic materials focusing on high temperature multiferroic: rare earth iron garnet and bismuth ferrite. We argue that topological structures play a pivotal role in multiferoics and show that electric control of magnetism can be carried out via spin spirals and domain walls. Magnetic domain walls produce ferroelectricity in rare earth iron garnets; transformations of spin cycloids release magnetoelectricity in bismuth ferrite. Ferroic orders couple via magnetic inhomogeneities, which shed new light on fundamental physics and applications.

The low-temperature magnetic, thermal and magnetocaloric properties of the half-Heusler compound DyNiSb were studied on polycrystalline samples. The temperature variations of the magnetization and the heat capacity revealed a phase transition from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic state at the Néel temperature T_{N} = 3.1 K. The compound exhibits normal and inverse magnetocaloric effect with the isothermal magnetic entropy change reaching 5.2 J/(kg K) at 4.8 K for a magnetic field change of 3 T. The estimated refrigerant capacity is about 58 J/kg.

Opis:
A polycrystalline sample of CeOsGa₄ was prepared by arc-melting stoichiometric quantities of high purity elements of 4N and greater, in an arc furnace. The data was confirmed to crystallize in an orthorhombic structure, with a space group Pmma (Number 51). Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility showed a distinct anomaly around T_{o} = 3.8 K, while the high temperature data (above 100 K) obeys Curie-Weiss law. The calculated effective moment of 2.44 μ_{B}, was obtained, which was a bit less than the theoretical moment for a Ce³⁺ ion of 2.54 μ_{B}. Magnetization data at T=2 K depicts that CeOsGa₄ does not saturate up to applied magnetic field of 7 T, while the data measured at 9 K indicates that the compound is purely paramagnetic at that temperature. The low temperature specific heat data is characterized by an anomaly at T_{o} = 3.8 K confirming the χ(T) data. Electrical resistivity shows a metallic behaviour at high temperatures with a deviation at low temperatures, signalling the cooperative behaviour which results to ordering. In this work we present the initial studies of the physical properties measurements performed on this compound.

Opis:
The magnetic phase diagram of bulk Cr_{100-x}Al_{x} shows interesting behaviour close to the triple point concentration of x ≈2. Since the magnetic properties of Cr are influenced by dimensionality, stress and strain, this study focussed on the investigation of Cr₉₉Al₁ thin films prepared on fused silica substrates with thicknesses t varying from 29 to 452 nm using sputtering techniques. Resistance measurements covering the temperature range 2 to 400 K did not show any clear anomalies that could be indicative of changes in the magnetic ordering. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies indicate the films are polycrystalline textured and that the 80 nm sample has the smallest grain size. In-plane stresses in these thin films were studied using the specialised XRD ın²ψ-method. The results show that the stress varies with film thickness. The 29 nm sample has stress in the order of 833 MPa and with increasing film thickness the stress reaches 1471 MPa for the 80 nm layer, where after it systematically reduces for the thicker coatings to 925 MPa for the 452 nm film. The highest stress for the Cr₉₉Al₁ thickness sample series is seen in the film with the smallest grain size.

Studies of rare earth compounds with transition metals are one of the dominant trends in modern magnetism and cover a wide range of research both basic and applicative nature. The main aim of the study of lanthanide compounds is to find answers to questions concerning mechanisms of interaction between the magnetic moments. A systematic study of the magnetic properties of rare-earth compounds gives hope for full understanding of magnetism in these families of compounds. For many years the $RT_{x}X₂$ compounds with the crystal structure of CeNiSi₂ - type are in the circle of my interests. We employ an effective-field theory with correlations in order to study a magnetocaloric effect on a triangular Ising antiferromagnet, which is selectively diluted by non-magnetic impurities on one of the three sublattices. Such a dilution generally relieves massive degeneracy in our system and therefore the ground-state entropy diminishes and the magnetocaloric effect weakens at low temperatures. However, at relatively higher temperatures we can observe significantly enhanced negative isothermal entropy changes for the sublattice concentration p_A=0.8.

The influence of pressure on the low-dimensional molecular magnet Cu(H₂O)₂(en)SO₄ (en = ethylenediamine = C₂H₈N₂) has theoretically been shown to affect the exchange interactions of the material. Herein, the results of an experimental study of hydrostatic pressure effects on the temperature dependence of the magnetization are reported. Using two different pressure cells, the magnetization measurements were performed between 2 K and 9.6 K with pressures ranging from ambient to 5.0 GPa. The data preliminarily suggest the presence of a shift in the magnetization peak of the material at the lowest temperatures and at the highest applied pressures. These data serve as a guide for future experimental work employing pressure to study this intriguing system.

The spin-1/2 Ising octahedron and dodecahedron with a unique antiferromagnetic interaction display an outstanding magnetization jump at zero magnetic field, which consequently leads to a giant magnetocaloric effect during the adiabatic demagnetization. In the present work we report temperature dependences of two basic magnetocaloric response functions: the isothermal entropy change and the adiabatic change of temperature. It is shown that the Ising octahedron and dodecahedron generally exhibit a large negative isothermal entropy change upon increase of the magnetic field, which serves in evidence of their cooling performance.

Magnetic properties of polycrystalline multiferroic $Bi_{0.65}La_{0.35}Fe_{0.5}Sc_{0.5}O_3$ synthesized under high-pressure (6 GPa) and high-temperature (1500 K) conditions were studied using a SQUID magnetometer technique. The temperature dependent static magnetic moment M was measured in both zero-field-cooled and field-cooled modes over the temperature range of 5-300 K in low magnetic field H=0.02 kOe. The field dependent magnetization M(H) was measured in magnetic fields up to 50 kOe at different temperatures up to 230 K after zero-field cooling procedure. A long-range magnetic ordering of the antiferromagnetic type with a weak ferromagnetic contribution takes place below $T_{N} ≈ 220 K$. Magnetic hysteresis loops taken below $T_{N}$ show a huge coercive field up to $H_{c}$ ≈10 kOe, while the magnetic moment does not saturate up to 50 kOe. A strong effect of magnetic field on the magnetic properties of the compound has been found. Below $T_{N}$ ≈220 K the derivatives of the initial magnetization curves demonstrate the existence of a temperature-dependent anomaly in fields of H=15÷25 kOe. The nature of the anomaly is unknown and requires additional study.

Magnetic properties of four nFeVO₄/(1-n)Co₃V₂O₈ samples obtained in reactions between FeVO₄ and Co₃V₂O₈ (n = 0.96, 0.86, 0.84 and 0.83, samples designated S1, S3, S4, S5, respectively) have been investigated by DC magnetisation in field cooling and zero-field-cooling modes and EPR. DC magnetic susceptibility showed paramagnetic behavior of all samples in high-temperature range (T > 20 K) and transition to antiferromagnetic state at 16-18 K (depending on sample iron content). Additional magnetic freezing at 8 K was registered for S3-S5 samples containing larger amount of cobalt. The Curie-Weiss law in 100-300 K temperature range indicates that Co²⁺ is in the high-spin state (S = 3/2). From the parameters of the hysteresis loop observed for the samples it was calculated that 0.58% of all magnetic (Fe³⁺, Co²⁺) ions were involved in the ferromagnetic states. EPR spectra of the samples were recorded in high temperature range (T > 90 K). The temperature dependence of the spectral parameters (resonance field, linewidth, integrated intensity) suggested the Fe³⁺ high-spin ions coupled by antiferromagnetic interaction and clusters of ions play major role in EPR spectra.

Opis:
The magnetic phase diagrams of Cr alloys with group-8 metals, such as Re and Ru, show interesting properties. These include quantum critical and superconducting behavior. In order to extend these investigations this paper reports on the physical properties and the magnetic phase diagram of the $Cr_{100-z}Os_{z}$ system, investigated in a concentration range of 2 ≤ z ≤ 30.6. Structural analysis indicate that samples with z<22 have a bcc structure, while those with z>22 include a cubic A15-type structure. Transport and magnetic property measurements indicate that the antiferromagnetic phase disappears at z ≈ 14 and that samples with concentrations z ≥ 12.2 show superconducting behavior. The magnetic phase diagram of $Cr_{100-z}Os_{z}$ is constructed from the Néel and superconducting transition temperatures obtained from various measurements. The commensurate spin-density-wave to paramagnetic phase line decreases sharply for z>4. Fitting parameters of a power law fit to the commensurate spin-density-wave to paramagnetic phase line indicate possible quantum critical behavior. Present results suggest that this phase line terminates in a superconducting dome near a magnetic quantum critical point, similar to that observed in certain heavy fermion systems, but not previously reported for other Cr alloys.
