Opis:
The lateral motion of excitons in GaAs quantum wells is studied by means of spatially resolved photoluminescence. We show that at low temperatures (4.2 K) the exciton motion evolves from localised excitons (zero mobility) in thin quantum wells to extremely high mobilities in wide wells. We find that for the widest quantum well investigated the observed motion cannot be explained by simple exciton diffusion and must be explained by the propagation of ballistic exciton polaritons.

This paper presents an application of a dielectric approach to the strong coupling between light and intersubband transitions in a quantum cascade laser structure. The multisubband transition possibility allows for an interesting scenario of coexisting absorption and gain branches in the antipolariton dispersions.

Properties of polaritons (free excitons coupled with photons of similar energy) in gallium nitride are investigated by performing calculations based on dielectric function theory including all three excitons A, B and C (characteristic for the wurtzite structure). Moreover the excited states of excitons have been taken into account by adding Elliott's components to dielectric function. Energies, polarizabilities and damping constants of excitons are determined. It is shown that due to inter-exciton interactions the B and C excitons are strongly damped. It is estimated that the characteristic time of B to A relaxation is t$\text{}_{BA}$=1 ps. The exciton C lifetime is estimated τ$\text{}_{C}$=0.2 ps.

Opis:
A quantum-electrodynamic approach is studied as an alternative to the classical description of polaritons in molecular crystals, with the focus on future interpretation of oligothiophene spectra. As expected, the results of the two approaches coincide, but the quantum description is better suited for future generalizations, notably for detailed studies of vibronic coupling. The quantum approach is used here to probe the importance of inherent polaritonic effects. They are found to be minor, being superseded by vibronic interactions; the latter are responsible for most peculiarities observed in oligothiophene spectra.

Opis:
We present a time-resolved study of the light emission of a CdTe-based microcavity. In the nonlinear regime, under high excitation conditions, in the strong coupling regime, we observe pronounced beats of the intensity of the photoluminescence arising from the bottleneck region of the exciton-polariton band. These beats are very sensitive to the excitation density and vanish under weak pumping conditions. We attribute the beats to a new nonlinear coupling mechanism of optically active and dark crystal states, related to polariton-polariton scattering, which leads to mixing between bright and dark states.

We study theoretically a nonresonant optical creation of a one-dimensional exciton-polariton condensate in a semiconductor microcavity. The polariton condensate is treated in the mean-field approach, taking into consideration an antitrapping potential created by the reservoir of noncondensed particles. Polariton condensates are excited by multiple lasers, with a combination of continuous wave and pulsed sources. The proposed pump-probe configuration leads to the realisation of various experimental schemes, e.g. optical trapping of a polariton condensate in real space. Moreover, it can be utilised for investigation of elementary excitations in the time domain when polariton condensates from two sources interact with each other.

Opis:
In this work, we discuss theoretically the formation of the Tamm plasmon/exciton-polariton hybrid states in an (Al,Ga)As microcavity and their modulation by surface acoustic waves. The modulation of the Tamm plasmon/exciton-polariton states origins in the change of the excitonic band gap energy and the thickness change of the sample structure layers due to the induced strain fields by surface acoustic waves. The frequency f_{SAW} of the acoustic modulation of the Tamm plasmon/exciton-polariton states is limited by the thickness of the upper distributed Bragg reflector. For the Tamm plasmon/exciton-polariton states in Al_xGa_{1-x}As/GaAs structures f_{SAW} is in the range of 370 MHz while f_{SAW} in GHz range is possible for the parametric Tamm plasmon/exciton-polariton states. In both cases, the acoustic modulation is several meV for typical acoustic power levels.

Opis:
The SU(2) coherent state path integral is used to investigate the partition function of the Holstein dimer. This approach naturally takes into account the dynamical symmetry of the model. The ground-state energy and the number of the phonons are calculated as functions of the parameters of the Hamiltonian. The renormalizations of the phonon frequency and electron hopping for bonding and antibonding states are considered. The destruction of quasiclassical mean field solution is discussed.

Opis:
Semiconductor microcavities are monolithic multilayer heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy. They allow the confinement along the growth axis of both photons between the Bragg reflectors and excitons in quantum wells. If the exciton-photon coupling matrix element is large enough compared to the line width, the system is said to be in the strong coupling regime. In that case a quantum well exciton couples to another discrete state: the photon mode of a planar microcavity with the same in-plane wave vector, to give rise to quasi-stationary states named cavity polaritons. In this regime, the Fermi golden rule does not hold any more and the optical properties, linear or nonlinear, are strongly related to polariton features. A review of the optical properties of CdTe-based microcavities operating in the strong coupling regime is given in this paper. The strength of the exciton-photon coupling, dynamic optical properties, and relaxation processes along polariton dispersion curves will be discussed, as well as stimulated emission of cavity polariton luminescence.
