Opis:
A study of the thin gold film growth, during the deposition on glass substrate under UHV conditions at low temperatures, is presented. The complementary methods, the atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray reflectometry, are used for the research. It is shown that due to variation of the time of deposition from 2 to 50 min different kinds of thin Au films nanostructures are obtained: from discontinuous films consisting of isolated islands, via formation of the chains of islands, up to continuous films.

We show that post growth annealing of GaMnAs under As capping at temperatures in the range of 180-210ºC leads to significant surface modifications. Depending on GaMnAs layer thickness and composition, we obtain either a smooth continuous reacted (MnAs) surface layer or 3D islands (quantum dots). The surface modifications are due to a solid phase epitaxial process, in which Mn interstitials diffusing to the GaMnAs surface are bound with the As.

Changes of the poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) structure as a function of degradation time in phosphate-buffered saline for 7 weeks were investigated by gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance ($\text{}^{1}$H NMR), and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Surface properties as wettability by sessile drop and topography by atomic force microscopy were also characterized. Chain-scission of polyester bonds in hydrolysis reaction causes a quite uniform decrease in molecular weight, and finally results in an increase in semicrystallinity. Molecular composition of the copolymer and water contact angle do not change considerably during degradation time. Atomic force microscopy studies suggest that the copolymer degrades by "in bulk" mechanism. The average size of the molecular-level free volume holes declines considerably after one week of degradation and remains constant till the sixth week of degradation. The free volume fraction decreases as a function of degradation time.

The films grow with different degrees of built-in strain, ranging from a large compressive to a large tensile in-plain strain. The tensile strain cannot be attributed to a substrate-related strain. The possible origins of the tensile strain are discussed.

Opis:
This paper presents a comparative study between the microstructural features of two water-ferrofluids intended for biological applications. In both cases the ferrophase was prepared by auto-catalytic reaction between ferrous and ferric salts and resulted in magnetite and some maghemite precipitates. The difference is given by the stabilizer molecule: tetramethylammonium hydroxide and, respectively, citric acid. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were utilized for ferrophase size investigation. The evidence of short chains and large aggregates was obtained mainly by atomic force microscopy analysis (the tip diameter being equal to 5 nm). Their role in the ferrofluid rheological properties was studied by carrying out comparative measurements of viscosity and surface tension. Complementary investigation of the ferrofluid composition was done by means of IR absorption spectra. The suitability of the prepared ferrofluids for biological goals was proved by their convenient ferrophase diameter as well as by their stability in time.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy was used to check the tunneling I-V characteristics of junctions formed by n-ZnO nanowires deposited on Si substrates with n- and p-type electrical conductivity (i.e. n-ZnO nanowire/n-Si and n-ZnO nanowire/p-Si junctions, respectively). Simultaneously, several phenomena which influence the measured I-V spectra were studied by atomic force microscopy. These influencing factors are: the deposition density of the nanowires, the possibility of surface modification by tip movement (difference in attraction forces between nanowires and the p-Si and n-Si) and the aging of the surface.

Thin obalt films, 40 nm and 100 nm in thickness, were evaporated at an incidence angle of 45° in a vacuum of about $10^{-5}$ mbar, simultaneously on unheated glass substrates and NaCl crystals. The magnetic microstructure of these films was investigated in a previous paper. In the present paper, to obtain an insight into relation between the magnetic microstructure and the morphological structure, we studied the latter structure with atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. For the films 40 nm as well as 100 nm thick, the presence of contribution of the shape anisotropy (related to the geometric alignment of the grains of the film) to the magnetic anisotropy of the film was found. Nevertheless, for the films investigated, we could not detect crystallographic texture.

Opis:
Biological properties of synthetic polymers can be improved by surface modification with the use of liquid oxidizers. A resorbable biomedical polymer - poly(glycolide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PGCL) was incubated in 0.1 M NaOH for 2, 6, 16, and 24 h, followed by excessive washing and drying in vacuum. Surface properties of the materials before and after modification were evaluated: wettability by contact angle measurements, topography by atomic force microscopy, and chemical functions by infrared spectroscopy. Applied modification improved wettability of PGCL due to creation of chemical oxygenated functionalities, and resulted in a slight alternation of the surface topography and roughness. In order to determine whether NaOH incubation caused structural changes in bulk of PGCL, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and viscosity measurements were performed. It was found that the ortho-positronium lifetime in PGCL declines as a function of modification time. It suggests that NaOH incubation causes structural changes in PGCL not only on the surface but also in bulk.

Opis:
The novel method of preparation of epi-ready ZnO substrates is demonstrated. The substrates were made of unique ZnO crystals grown by chemical vapor transport method using hydrogen as the transport agent. The effect of low-level doping (Mn, Co, Cu, and V) on the structural quality of the crystals was investigated. Atomic layer deposition was used to verify usability of the substrates for homoepitaxy. The thermal annealing prior to the atomic layer deposition process and effect of thermal annealing of the epitaxial layers was studied. The X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy methods were applied to study the structural quality of the ZnO layers. Detection of the dopants in the substrates by secondary ion mass spectroscopy made possible the measurement of the thickness of the layers. The obtained root mean square roughness for both the substrates and layers ranged between 0.2 nm and 5 nm, and was dependent on the sample crystallographic orientation and sequence of polishing and annealing procedures. The optimal recipe for the epi-ready substrate preparation was formulated.

The possibility of magnetic anisotropy engineering of ultrathin Co films in the scale of several dozen nanometers is investigated by magnetooptical magnetometry. In Au/Co/Au sandwiches the spin reorientation transition from the out-of-plane to the in-plane configuration is observed, when Co layer thickness exceeds 1.9 nm. Molybdenum as the underlayer suppresses the Co thickness range for which the perpendicular magnetization is stable. The application of patterned buffer in the form of Au islands grown on Mo layer for ultrathin Co film gives rise to the array of spatially stable magnetic dots fabrication ca. 100 nm in lateral size with magnetization perpendicular to the film plane surrounded by the area magnetized in the sample plane.

Opis:
The changes of the surface topography of stainless-steel and aluminium electrodes occurring due to the action of electric pulses which are utilized for cell electroporation, have been studied by using atomic force microscopy. The surfaces of the polished stainless-steel electrodes were smooth - the average roughness was 13-17 nm and the total roughness 140-180 nm. The total roughness of the aluminium electrodes was about 320 nm. After the treatment of the chambers filled with 154 mM NaCl solution by a series of short (20-40 μs), high-voltage (4 kV) pulses with the total dissolution charge of 0.20-0.26 A s/$cm^{2}$, the roughness of the surface of the electrodes has increased, depending on the total amount of the electric charge that has passed through the unit area of the electrode. Up to a two- and threefold increase of the surface roughness of the stainless-steel and aluminium anodes respectively was observed due to the dissolution of the anode material. Therefore, the use of high-voltage electric pulses leads to the increase of the inhomogeneity of the electric field at the electrode, which facilitates the occurrence of the electric breakdown of the liquid samples and causes non-equal treatment of each cell.

Opis:
Nowadays, it is well established that changes of cell stiffness observed by atomic force microscopy are linked with the cell cytoskeleton. Its structural and functional alterations are underlying major diseases such as cancer, inflammation or neurodegenerative disorders. So far, the use of atomic force microscopy is mostly focused on the determination of the Young modulus using the modified Hertz model. It can quantitatively describe the elastic properties of living cells, however, its value is burdened by the fact that cells are neither isotropic nor homogeneous material. Often, during the atomic force microscopy measurements, the hysteresis between the loading and unloading curves are observed which indicates the dissipation of an energy. In our studies, the index of plasticity was introduced to enumerate such effect during a single loading-unloading cycle. As the results show, such approach delivers an additional parameter describing the mechanical state of cell cytoskeleton. The analysis was performed on test samples where the mechanical properties of the melanoma cells were changed by glutaraldehyde and cytochalasin D treatments. The non-treated cells were compared with fibroblasts.
