Opis:
A study of the thin gold film growth, during the deposition on glass substrate under UHV conditions at low temperatures, is presented. The complementary methods, the atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray reflectometry, are used for the research. It is shown that due to variation of the time of deposition from 2 to 50 min different kinds of thin Au films nanostructures are obtained: from discontinuous films consisting of isolated islands, via formation of the chains of islands, up to continuous films.

The possibility of magnetic anisotropy engineering of ultrathin Co films in the scale of several dozen nanometers is investigated by magnetooptical magnetometry. In Au/Co/Au sandwiches the spin reorientation transition from the out-of-plane to the in-plane configuration is observed, when Co layer thickness exceeds 1.9 nm. Molybdenum as the underlayer suppresses the Co thickness range for which the perpendicular magnetization is stable. The application of patterned buffer in the form of Au islands grown on Mo layer for ultrathin Co film gives rise to the array of spatially stable magnetic dots fabrication ca. 100 nm in lateral size with magnetization perpendicular to the film plane surrounded by the area magnetized in the sample plane.

Fe-Al single crystals of three different compositions (20, 28 and 40 at.% Al) in single slip orientation were studied. Evolution of their surfaces during deformation at room temperature was observed in situ in atomic force microscope. Atomic force microscopy allows us to investigate slip lines on much finer scale than traditional optical observations. Wavy slip bands in $Fe-Al_{20},$ cross-slip in $Fe-Al_{28}$ and weak slip line texture in $Fe-Al_{40}$ are described. Post mortem observations of surfaces of $Fe-Al_{28}$ deformed at elevated temperatures (in the range of yield stress anomaly) are presented as well.

Atomic force microscopy measurements and force theory calculations using the Lifshitz theory show that van der Waals/Casimir dispersive forces have a strong dependence on surface roughness and material optical properties. It is found that at separations below 100 nm the roughness effect is manifested through a strong deviation from the normal scaling of the force with separation distance. Moreover, knowledge of precise optical properties of metals is shown to be very important for accurate force predictions rather than referring to idealized defect free material models. Finally, we compare the van der Waals/Casimir forces to capillary adhesive forces in order to illustrate their significance in stiction problems.

PbSnS thin films were prepared by hot-wall vacuum evaporation. The Rutherford backscattering technique was employed for the investigation of $Pb_{x}Sn_{1 - x}S$ thin films composition. With a help of atomic force microscopy the main stages in the development of the thin films were characterized. Contact angle measurements of water drop on $Pb_{x}Sn_{1 - x}S$ thin films have been conducted on our original setup.

The investigation of influence of $Xe^{+}$ ions irradiation of graphite on its surface topography and wettability was conducted. With the increase of the irradiation dose, the roughness average increases rapidly at first (when the sample was irradiated at the dose of 1 × $10^{14} cm^{-2}$) and then decreases slowly. The atomic force microscopy three-dimensional pictures showed that after irradiation of graphite of $Xe^{+}$ ions with a dose of 3 × $10^{15} cm^{-2}$ hemispherical grains (from 0.2 to 0.8 μm in diameter) appear on its surface. Surface water contact angle measurement showed that irradiation of graphite by $Xe^{+}$ ions leads to a hydrophobic surface of graphite. We have observed that irradiation of graphite by $Xe^{+}$ ions can be used for obtaining graphite surface with desirable topography and water wettability.

In that report we observe the initial stages in the process of film growth at different irradiation doses. Investigations of influence of Mo deposition on glass substrates by means of self-ion-assisted deposition on its topography (atomic force microscopy) and wettability (sessile-drop method) were carried out. It was found out that with an increase of the irradiation dose, the average roughness and the contact angle increases rapidly at first and then decrease. 2.45-2.77 increase in the contact angle of water when Mo-based coating was deposited on the glass was observed.

This study addressed the advanced micro-morphological characterization of 3D surfaces of thin films based on composites of an organic matrix of poly-methyl-methacrylate and inorganic titanium-dioxide nanocrystals. The films were prepared by spin-coating of a series of solutions with increasing loading concentration of the nanocrystals, from 5 up to 40% by weight. The film surfaces were investigated by atomic force microscopy, and the resulting images were analyzed in detail to obtain a full quantitative description of their surface micro-morphology. The fractal analysis of the surface roughness was used to extract the characteristics of amplitude, spatial distribution, and pattern. A fractal geometry was indeed observed, and the corresponding fractal dimension D was determined for all the samples. In view of the possible use of these thin films as functional coatings, the calculated quantities are discussed with respect to the foreseen durability of these surfaces during operation under wear.

Thin obalt films, 40 nm and 100 nm in thickness, were evaporated at an incidence angle of 45° in a vacuum of about $10^{-5}$ mbar, simultaneously on unheated glass substrates and NaCl crystals. The magnetic microstructure of these films was investigated in a previous paper. In the present paper, to obtain an insight into relation between the magnetic microstructure and the morphological structure, we studied the latter structure with atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. For the films 40 nm as well as 100 nm thick, the presence of contribution of the shape anisotropy (related to the geometric alignment of the grains of the film) to the magnetic anisotropy of the film was found. Nevertheless, for the films investigated, we could not detect crystallographic texture.

Epitaxial manganite La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO₃ (LSMO) layers, with a thickness of 20-50 nm, are prepared on single crystal (001) SrTiO₃ (STO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique. Structural characterization (composition analysis, surface morphology), investigated by the Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy, reveals the growth of stoichiometric LSMO films with a smooth surface (root-mean-square value of 0.21-1.6 nm). The prepared LSMO films possess high Curie temperature ( ≈ 412 K), low room temperature resistivity (1-2 mΩ cm) and maximum of temperature coefficient of resistivity TCR = 2.7% K¯¹ at 321 K.

Opis:
The novel method of preparation of epi-ready ZnO substrates is demonstrated. The substrates were made of unique ZnO crystals grown by chemical vapor transport method using hydrogen as the transport agent. The effect of low-level doping (Mn, Co, Cu, and V) on the structural quality of the crystals was investigated. Atomic layer deposition was used to verify usability of the substrates for homoepitaxy. The thermal annealing prior to the atomic layer deposition process and effect of thermal annealing of the epitaxial layers was studied. The X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy methods were applied to study the structural quality of the ZnO layers. Detection of the dopants in the substrates by secondary ion mass spectroscopy made possible the measurement of the thickness of the layers. The obtained root mean square roughness for both the substrates and layers ranged between 0.2 nm and 5 nm, and was dependent on the sample crystallographic orientation and sequence of polishing and annealing procedures. The optimal recipe for the epi-ready substrate preparation was formulated.

Titanium carbide (TiC) hard coatings have been obtained on steel and silicon substrates by rf magnetron sputtering process. Two layer coatings have been deposited in order to improve adhesion on steel. The lower layer was titanium metal and the upper TiC layer was obtained by reactive sputtering of the titanium target in Ar and methane gas mixture. The study confirmed that the TiC layer composition depends on the reactive sputtering gas composition and substrate bias voltage. Film microhardness was measured by microindentation. Measurement results showed that the hardness coating depends on the microstructure of our coatings and the polarization of bias substrate is an important parameter to control the microstructure.

We show that post growth annealing of GaMnAs under As capping at temperatures in the range of 180-210ºC leads to significant surface modifications. Depending on GaMnAs layer thickness and composition, we obtain either a smooth continuous reacted (MnAs) surface layer or 3D islands (quantum dots). The surface modifications are due to a solid phase epitaxial process, in which Mn interstitials diffusing to the GaMnAs surface are bound with the As.

Opis:
The changes of the surface topography of stainless-steel and aluminium electrodes occurring due to the action of electric pulses which are utilized for cell electroporation, have been studied by using atomic force microscopy. The surfaces of the polished stainless-steel electrodes were smooth - the average roughness was 13-17 nm and the total roughness 140-180 nm. The total roughness of the aluminium electrodes was about 320 nm. After the treatment of the chambers filled with 154 mM NaCl solution by a series of short (20-40 μs), high-voltage (4 kV) pulses with the total dissolution charge of 0.20-0.26 A s/$cm^{2}$, the roughness of the surface of the electrodes has increased, depending on the total amount of the electric charge that has passed through the unit area of the electrode. Up to a two- and threefold increase of the surface roughness of the stainless-steel and aluminium anodes respectively was observed due to the dissolution of the anode material. Therefore, the use of high-voltage electric pulses leads to the increase of the inhomogeneity of the electric field at the electrode, which facilitates the occurrence of the electric breakdown of the liquid samples and causes non-equal treatment of each cell.
