Opis:
Phonon excitations in (CdTe)$\text{}_{12}$/(MnTe)$\text{}_{n}$ (100) superlattices (n=2, 4, 8) were investigated at 295 K and 25 K with the use of Raman scattering. From the "folded" phonon frequencies the elastic constant c$\text{}_{11}$ value for MnTe was estimated. The strain arising from lattice mismatch (determined by X-ray diffraction) results in shifts of MnTe and CdTe "confined" LO phonon frequencies. For the precise determination of LO phonon dispersions an additional shift due to Mn diffusion at the CdTe/MnTe interface should be taken into account.

Opis:
The acoustic phonon dispersion of mercury sulphide of zinc-blende structure (β-HgS) was studied by inelastic neutron scattering. The measurements were carried out at 19 K and 295 K on HgS crystals doped with Fe. A slight decrease in phonon frequencies with increasing temperature was found, the temperature dependence being the strongest for LA phonons with [ξ,ξ,0] propagation. From acoustic phonon dispersion the values of selected elastic constants were determined for β-HgS.

Opis:
In this paper we discuss a possibility of an optical characterization of thin semiconductor epilayers by Raman scattering measurements. As an example zinc blende Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te epilayers (0.66 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy method and investigated by Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction. Information resulting from both methods is compared and discussed.

Collective excitations have been analyzed for Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te epilayers (0.66 ≤ x ≤ 1) by the Raman scattering studies performed at temperatures from 7 K to 295 K. Apart from the lattice optical modes magnetic excitations (magnons) were observed at sufficiently low temperatures.

Opis:
Optical phonon dispersion for β-HgS was measured by the neutron scattering for the first time. The results confirmed theoretically predicted anomalous behavior of phonon modes in this material, resulting probably from high ionicity of mercury sulphide and large difference of Hg and S atomic mass. Influence of the isotopic effects on the TO-phonon mode for HgSe and HgS is analyzed. The possible observation of such effects in IR reflectivity spectra taken for HgSe at low temperature is discussed.

Opis:
As synchrotron radiation sources have been used for many experiments in the ultraviolet and X-ray regimes, the free-electron laser is an excellent source for a wide array of infrared-photon projects and applications. The free-electron laser delivers a beam of powerful tunable pulsed radiation which provides the opportunity for spatial and temporal localization of the energy delivered at any desired wavelength within the 2-10 μ regime. One application discussed employs the free-electron laser for spectroscopy as a probe of electronic and vibrational structures. Another application uses the free-electron laser beam as a tool for altering materials in a fundamentally new way.

We give a first report of the physical properties of the pair of cubic intermetallic compounds $R_{3}Rh_{4}Ge_{13}$, with R being either Yb or Lu. The crystal structure can be described in terms of 3 atomic cages, and we reveal how certain thermal physical properties are inherent to this particular atomic layout. Close to room temperature, $Yb_{3}Rh_{4}Ge_{13}$ displays strong paramagnetism originating from $Yb^{3+}$ ions, but upon cooling though 100 K the magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity behave according to a thermally driven valence instability, and we classify $Yb_{3}Rh_{4}Ge_{13}$ therefore as an intermediate valent f-electron system. $Lu_{3}Rh_{4}Ge_{13}$ behaves in a diamagnetic manner throughout our accessible temperature range, - first with a weakly temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility below room temperature, and finally with a precipitous drop in the electrical resistivity to zero at 2.5 K when superconductivity sets in.

Opis:
We present far-infrared reflection spectra of Pb$\text{}_{0.95}$Mn$\text{}_{0.05}$Te single crystal doped with gallium between 10 and 300 K. The analysis of the far-infrared reflection spectra was made by a fitting procedure based on the model of coupled oscillators. Together with the strong plasmon-phonon coupling we obtain three local modes of gallium at about 122 cm$\text{}^{-1}$, 166 cm$\text{}^{-1}$, and 192 cm$\text{}^{-1}$. The position of these modes depends on impurity center charge, and their intensity depends on temperature.

Opis:
We calculate the eigenfrequencies of bulk semiconductors using tight-binding total energy calculations of an ideal and a distorted lattice. We correlate the obtained energy change with the harmonic force constants appearing as parameters in the expansion of the potential energy of the crystal lattice in terms of the displacement. A good agreement of the calculated q = 0 optical vibrational modes with the experimental values for Si, Ge, GaAs and GaP bulk crystals is obtained. The influence of a surface on the force constants and the vibrational frequencies is studied.

Opis:
Spectra of possible phonon states, as well as thermodynamic characteristics of nanocrystals (ultrathin film and quantum wire) of simple cubic crystalline structure are analyzed in this paper, using the method of two-time dependent Green functions. From energy spectra and internal energy of the system the thermal capacitance of these structures in low temperature region is found. The temperature behavior of specific heat is compared to that of corresponding bulk structure. It is shown that at extremely low temperatures thermal capacitance of quantum wire is considerably lower than the thermal capacitance of film as well as the bulk sample. Consequences of this fact are discussed in detail and its influence to thermodynamic properties of materials is estimated.

A direct method and ab initio force constants were used to calculate phonon dispersion curves and phonon density in Al. The force constants were determined from the Hellmann-Feynman forces induced by the displacement of an atom in the 2×2×2 fcc crystallographic supercell. This size of the supercell gives exact phonon frequencies at Γ, X, L, W points of the Brillouin zone. The calculated phonon dispersion curves are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Far-infrared and magnetic properties of Ni doped PbTe ($Z_Ni$ = 1× $10^{19}$ at./$cm^{3}$) single crystal are investigated in a broad range of temperature and magnetic fields. Far-infrared reflection spectra were analyzed using a fitting procedure based on the modified plasmon-two phonon interaction model. Together with the strong plasmon-two longitudinal optical phonon coupling we obtained a local mode of Ni at about 180 $cm^{-1}$. This mode intensity depends on temperature. Magnetic measurements shows that PbTe alloys doped with Ni reveals weak ferromagnetic interaction between magnetic ions.

Nanocrystalline samples of ZnO(Fe) were synthesized by wet chemical method. Samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction to determine composition of the samples (ZnO, Fe₂O₃, ZnFe₂O₄) and the mean crystalline size (8-52 nm). In this paper we report the experimental spectra of the Raman scattering (from 200 to $1600 cm^{-1}$). Main characteristics of experimental Raman spectrum in 200 to $1600 cm^{-1}$ spectral region are: sharp peak at $436 cm^{-1}$ and broad two-phonon structure at ≈ $1150 cm^{-1}, typical of ZnO;broad structure below $700 cm^{-1}$ that has different position and shape in case of ZnFe₂O₄ or Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles.

In this paper, we present room temperature unpolarized Raman scattering spectra of Ni doped PbTe single crystal sample. Crystal of PbTe(Ni) was grown by the Bridgman method. The Ni concentration in the sample used here was 1× $10^{19}$ at./$cm^{3}$. Well resolved peaks appear at about 126, 143, 181, 362 and 724 $cm^{-1}$. The modes at 126 and 143 $cm^{-1}$, which are also observed in other telluride compounds, originate from vibrations in $TeO_2$. We assume that the mode at about 181 $cm^{-1}$ is connected to excitations of a local phonon mode in the vicinity of an impurity atom (donor $Ni^{3+}$ state). Modes at about 362 $cm^{-1}$ and 724 $cm^{-1}$ are the second and fourth harmonic of a local phonon mode, registered here due to multiphonon emission.
