Opis:
Single crystals of the (Pb,Cd)Te solid solution with CdTe content up to 9% were grown by self-selecting vapour growth method and investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, and nanoindentation measurements. The analysis of the linear part of the LA phonon dispersion, determined by the inelastic neutron scattering demonstrated an increase of the sound velocity (thus the hardening of the crystal lattice) with an increase of CdTe content in the solid solution. An important increase of microhardness value for (Pb,Cd)Te was directly confirmed by results of nanoindentation measurements performed for a few samples with various chemical composition.

Opis:
A simple model of a surface of a 2D continuum is shown to exhibit subsonic and supersonic surface resonances (leaky waves, pseudosurface waves), i.e. finite-lived excitations, along with usual surface waves (true subsonic surface waves). The physical meaning, controversial in the existing literature, of the surface leaky waves in both regions is discussed by a thought experiment in which a stimulus adjusted to the resonance parameters is applied to the surface. The infinite displacement-stimulus ratio in the long-time limit then is shown to be in power in all the cases of surface states and a finite amplitude of the leaky waves is demonstrated despite an apparent divergence suggested by their algebraic form.

Elastic stiffness parameters are determined in a 2D model system of rigid rods interacting by harmonic force constants. Any positive ("normal" crystal) or negative (auxetic crystal) Poisson ratio can be obtained in this model as a function of the external stress. Opis:
The lattice in-plane dynamics is studied as a function of external field in a model of auxetic crystal consisting of rigid polar rods and of elastic springs. The phase speed of the transverse acoustic wave propagating parallel to the polar rods is shown to be higher than the speed of the longitudinal wave at strong fields. An absolute stop band for the lattice waves opens in the whole Brillouin zone with increasing field. The surface waves and resonances at a surface parallel to the rods are studied. Infinitely narrow resonances called exceptional surface waves are found within bulk bands at certain specific values of the parameters characterizing the surface. Generally, the surface layer should be significantly heavier and stiffer than the substrate for the phenomenon to occur.

Opis:
PbTe and its solid solution (Pb,Cd)Te containing 2% of CdTe and PbTe grown by self-selecting vapour growth technique were investigated by inelastic X-ray scattering using synchrotron radiation. The ID28 beamline at ESRF with the incident photon energy of 17794 eV and the energy resolution of 3 meV was applied for that purpose. The measurements were performed at room temperature along [001]-type high symmetry direction in the Brillouin zone. In spite of a very low energy of phonon branches they can be determined by inelastic X-ray scattering with a high accuracy. The transversal acoustic phonon dispersion obtained by inelastic X-ray scattering corresponds well to those resulting from inelastic neutron scattering measurements and ab initio calculations. Apart from expected structures corresponding to the bulk phonons an additional scattering related to the crystal surface properties was observed in the inelastic X-ray scattering spectra. The analysis performed with the use of secondary ion mass spectroscopy technique demonstrated a presence of a thin oxide layer at sample surfaces.

We present a symmetry analysis of allowed infrared and Raman modes in graphene and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. Surface structure for highly oriented pyrolytic graphite is examined using atomic force microscopy. As experimental tools, we used infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry in order to investigate the pseudodielectric function of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite in the mid-infrared range (500-7000 $cm^{-1}$) and Raman spectroscopy to investigate the influence of layers number decrease. As a result, we propose a method for an experimental verification of graphene.

$BiFeO_3$ is a multiferroic material showing antiferromagnetic ordering and ferroelectric behavior simultaneously. Here, Mn-doped $BiFeO_3$ nanoparticles were synthesized up to 10% of Mn composition by a sol-gel process. The samples showed high crystallinity with no secondary phase up to 2% of Mn doping. A phonon peak at 1250 $cm^{-1}$ in undoped $BiFeO_3$ showed anomalous intensity enhancement in the magnetically ordered phase below $T_N$ = 643 K due to a spin-phonon coupling. This behavior was less pronounced in the Mn-doped samples, suggesting a suppression of magnetic ordering between $Fe^{3+}$ spins by Mn doping.

In this paper 1D crystal lattice is analyzed within harmonic approximation, with one atom per elementary cell and nearest neighbor interaction included. For this type of crystal lattice dispersion relations are well known. Thermodynamic functions (specific heat and phonon thermal conductivity) are calculated via phonon density of states given in exact form. Thermodynamic variables are calculated for a whole temperature range. In limiting cases of low and high temperatures these thermodynamic variables can be found in analytic forms. For thermal conductivity the results of Callaway model for exact phonon density of states are compared with the results of Callaway model for Debye approximation of phonon density of states.

For three-dimensional charge carriers described by the dispersion law with quartic terms of the wave vector, the density of states function similar as in the one-dimensional case was determined. This similarity allows the Pekar and Dejgen condenson states in the continuum approximation to exist. The calculated phonon spectrum reveals optical vibrations of a very low frequency, which favours the electron-phonon interaction and creation of the condenson states.

The analysis of the far-infrared reflection spectra was made by a fitting procedure based on the model of coupled oscillators. Together with the strong plasmon-phonon coupling we obtain three local modes of gallium at about 122 cm$\text{}^{-1}$, 166 cm$\text{}^{-1}$, and 192 cm$\text{}^{-1}$. The position of these modes depends on impurity center charge, and their intensity depends on temperature.

In this paper, we present room temperature unpolarized Raman scattering spectra of Ni doped PbTe single crystal sample. Crystal of PbTe(Ni) was grown by the Bridgman method. The Ni concentration in the sample used here was 1× $10^{19}$ at./$cm^{3}$. Well resolved peaks appear at about 126, 143, 181, 362 and 724 $cm^{-1}$. The modes at 126 and 143 $cm^{-1}$, which are also observed in other telluride compounds, originate from vibrations in $TeO_2$. We assume that the mode at about 181 $cm^{-1}$ is connected to excitations of a local phonon mode in the vicinity of an impurity atom (donor $Ni^{3+}$ state). Modes at about 362 $cm^{-1}$ and 724 $cm^{-1}$ are the second and fourth harmonic of a local phonon mode, registered here due to multiphonon emission.

Methods and ways of piezoelectric measuring converters fastening on the objects of research are considered in the article. Piezoelectric accelerometers are sensors of a contact type, they have a mechanical contact with the object of research. The peculiarity of such connection is the fact that the object immediately has an influence on the output signal of the accelerometer. Therefore, study of methods and ways of piezoelectric accelerometers fastening on the objects of research is, undoubtedly, topical. Their advantages and disadvantages are specified. Recommendations about the choice of the way of piezoelectric measuring converters fastening on the objects of research depending on the operating conditions are made.

Opis:
The properties of carbon nanotubes can be dramatically altered by the presence of defects. In this work we address the properties of two different kinds of defective nanotubes: junctions of achiral tubes with topological defects and partially unzipped carbon nanotubes. In particular, we begin by focussing on the interface states in carbon nanotube junctions between achiral tubes. We show that their number and energies can be derived by applying the Born-von Karman boundary condition to an interface between armchair- and zigzag-terminated semi-infinite graphene layers. We show that these interface states, which were thought to be due to the presence of topological defects, are in fact related to the graphene zigzag edge states. Secondly, we study partially unzipped carbon nanotubes, which can be considered as the junction of a carbon nanotube and a graphene nanoribbon, which has edge features giving rise to novel properties. Carbon nanoribbons act as transparent contacts for nanotubes and viceversa, yielding a high conductance. At certain energies, nanoribbons behave as valley filters for carbon nanotubes; this holds considering electron-electron interaction effects. Furthermore, the application of a magnetic field turns the system conducting, with a 100% magnetoresistance. These novel structures may open a way for new carbon-based devices.

Magnetoresistance measurements were performed on an n-type PbTe/PbEuTe quantum well and weak antilocalization effects were observed. This indicates the presence of spin-orbit coupling phenomena and we showed that the Rashba effect is the main mechanism responsible for this spin-orbit coupling. Using the model developed by Iordanskii et al., we fitted the experimental curves and obtained the inelastic and spin-orbit scattering times. Thus we could compare the zero field energy spin-splitting predicted by the Rashba theory with the energy spin-splitting obtained from the analysis of the experimental curves. The final result confirms the theoretical prediction of strong Rashba effect on IV-VI based quantum wells.
