Opis:
The effect of surface polishing on the flexural strength of anorthite based porcelainised stoneware was studied. The flexural strength results obtained from both polished and unpolished samples were analysed by using Weibull statistical method. The state of surfaces and microstructures of polished and unpolished samples were also characterised by profilometry and scanning electron microscopy. Typical flexural strength value obtained from anorthite based stoneware body fired at 1210°C was about 100 MPa. The average flexural strength (σ_{m}) and Weibull modulus (m) values for as fired, ground, and ground and polished specimens increased sequentially with polishing degree. The surface roughness measurements and microstructure observations showed that the severity of the surface flaws declined as the polishing process proceeded. The obtainment of better strength behaviour with polishing was attributed to high crystalline to glassy phase ratio of the anorthite based porcelainised stoneware together with the formation of network structure of these anorthite crystals.

Opis:
In the present paper, the delamination fracture toughness of composite materials on cantilever beams was studied. The cantilever beams were assumed to be epoxy resin filled with hard coal and recently developed a new composite material model was used. Accordingly, the composite materials were based on epoxy resin as a matrix and two types of hard coal as fillers with additions of 4.32, 7.5, and 10.68 vol.%. The fracture toughness of epoxy-hard coal composite cantilever beams was investigated numerically by using ANSYS® finite element analyses package program. Mode I fracture toughness (critical strain energy release rate) in the neighborhood of the crack zone was found by using virtual crack closure technique for critical displacement values. The influences of the types and volumes of the hard coal fillers on the strain energy release rate were presented. The critical strain energy release rate increased at 10.8% when the volume ratio of anthracite coal was increased from 4.32% to 10.68%. Model verification of the finite element analysis was performed with an analytical solution in literature and the difference was determined as 3.75% and also this pointed the precision of the present finite element analysis.

Novel architectures for electronics and photonics are expected to be developed using the forthcoming $Si_{1-x}Ge_{x}$ technology. However, in $Si_{1-x}Ge_{x}$-based heterostructures, materials and design issues rely on accurate control of strain and composition of the alloy. The Raman spectroscopy has rapidly emerged as a reliable technique for the quantitative determination of such parameters on a sub-micrometric scale. In this work we present an investigation of the effects of the growth conditions of $Si_{1-x}Ge_{x}$ graded layers on dislocation nucleation and interaction. In particular, we focus on the crucial role the deposition temperature plays in the dislocation kinetics. The analysis of threading dislocation densities is accompanied by a quantitative measurement of the residual strain in $Si_{1-x}Ge_{x}$/Si heterostructures, carried out by means of the Raman scattering. Our approach is effective in studying the physical mechanism governing dislocation multiplication and the sharp transition from a state of brittleness to a state of ductility within a narrow temperature window.

Recently, the presence of basal-prismatic interfaces in hexagonal close packed metals became subject of intensive investigation. We model the {101̅2} twin in magnesium bounded by two types of boundaries, i.e. {101̅2} interface and basal-prismatic facets. The migration of all boundary types is mediated by the motion of interfacial disconnections. It was shown that basal-prismatic interfaces play an important role in twin growth. The lengths of basal-prismatic facets remain constant during migration independently of the applied strain. In contrast, the {101̅2} interfaces increase their lengths during growth.

High mobility of twin boundary is crucial for magnetic shape memory effect. The twin boundary can be moved by applied magnetic field or mechanical stress. In Ni-Mn-Ga 10M martensite there are two different, field movable, a-c twin boundaries type I and II due to monoclinic lattice. For single twin boundary of both types we experimentally evaluated the equivalence of magnetic and mechanical force and the validity of generally used energy model using direct stress-strain and magnetization measurements. For type II, highly mobile twin boundary, the equivalence seems to be valid and model broadly agrees with measurement. However, for type I the calculated magnetic stress is much larger than mechanical stress needed for twin boundary motion.

Being a light metallic engineering material with low density, high specific stiffness and strength, aluminium alloys are promising materials in the fields of aerospace, military and automotive industries. Consumption of aluminium alloys in the forms of sheets and plates has generally increased in global markets over the past 45 years. Rolling directions affect the anisotropy and mechanical properties of the aluminium alloys. In this work, the plane strain fracture toughness KIC values of 7075 aluminium alloy were measured in plates of three directions and six orientations (L-T, T-L, T-S, S-T, L-S, S-L), using the standard (ASTM E399) compact tension specimens. The results indicate that dependence of fracture toughness of 7075-T651 aluminium alloy on rolling direction is obvious and that KIC values of T-S and L-T orientations are the highest.

This work investigates the hot tearing behavior of Mg-Al and Mg-Zn alloys quantitatively based on the measurement of contraction force using an experimental setup which was developed at MagIC. An emphasis is given on the analysis of typical hot tearing curves to understand the corresponding metallurgical phenomena shown by these curves. The recorded hot tearing curves, i.e. the contraction force vs. temperature or time, contain valuable metallurgical information. They give not only the precise temperature at which the hot tearing initiates, but also depict information about the propagation of hot cracks. Combined with thermodynamic calculations, the critical solid fraction corresponding to the occurrence of hot tearing can be calculated. Further microstructural observations were performed. Several phenomena such as the crack propagation and refilling of cracks, which influence the slope of hot tearing curves, are also discussed.

The mechanical performance of ultrafine-grained materials is strongly influenced by the lattice defect structure, i.e. the vacancy concentration, the type, arrangement and density of dislocations, the planar fault probability, as well as the amount and character of grain boundaries. In this paper, the correlation between the processing conditions, the lattice defect structure and the plastic behavior of ultrafine-grained materials is overviewed. For the processing route of severe plastic deformation, the influence of applied strain, hydrostatic pressure, as well as melting point, stacking fault energy and alloying on grain size, dislocation density and strength is studied. For nanopowder sintering techniques, the effect of atmosphere, temperature and time of consolidation on lattice defects and mechanical properties is discussed in detail.

Tungsten carbide (WC) powder having a crystallite size around 55 nm and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area 2.75 $m^2//g$ was sintered using the field assisted sintering/spark plasma sintering technique. Sintered samples were investigated using different analytical methods providing detailed information on the microstructure and mechanical properties of materials. Density and porosity of specimens were determined using the Archimedes principle and optical and scanning electron micrographs. The X-ray diffraction investigations provided the information on the crystal real structure and crystallite sizes. The electron backscatter diffraction measurements yielded the details about the grain size, frequency, and distributions of grain boundaries. Finally, the essential mechanical properties of sintered samples were obtained from the hardness and fracture toughness measurements. The influences of individual sintering conditions: sintering temperature and sintering time especially, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of sintered specimens were derived. Fully compact samples having the Vickers hardness HV10 around 29 GPa and fracture toughness $K_{Ic}$ approximately 7.2 MPa $m^{1//2}$ were sintered from temperatures of 1800C and holding times 1 min. Specimens sintered at lower temperatures showed lower density which resulted in a significant drop in the sample hardness.

Poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) is a high-performance thermoplastic engineering polymer, which exhibits outstanding properties such as electrical insulation, dimensional and thermal stability, chemical resistance, etc. In addition to this, PPS has a high degree of crystallinity and it exhibits good physical properties at elevated temperatures. Owing to these properties, PPS is widely used in electrical and electronic components, automobile industry and mechanical applications. These outstanding properties of PPS can be attributed to its chemical structure, composed of phenyl groups linked by a sulfur atom, which gives rigidity to the chain. On the other hand, the brittleness with low elongation strain, toughness and crack propagation resistance also restricts its further applications. Several methods are used to overcome these undesirable properties of PPS. Blending of PPS with other polymers is one of these methods. In this study, Ethylene-Acrylic Ester-Glycidyl Methacrylate terpolymer (Lotader®-AX8900) was used to improve the toughness and crack propagation resistance properties of PPS. For this purpose, PPS/Lotader (0, 2, 5, 10 wt.% Lotader) blends were prepared at various compositions. The blends were manufactured using laboratory scale twin screw extruder and injection molding machine. Mechanical properties of blends were investigated by using tensile test method. In addition to this, crack propagation and toughness of samples were investigated by using essential work of fracture (EWF) method. As a result of this study, it was found that Lotader addition significantly increases the toughness and crack propagation resistance of PPS.

Opis:
The present paper deals with the evaluation of the effect of different vacuum heat treatments on the microstructure and fracture surfaces of a low alloyed sintered Fe-[1.5Cr-0.2Mo]-0.6C steel, in correlation with the mechanical and plastic properties achieved. The heat treatment consists of the sintering process in vacuum furnace at 1393 K for 1800 s, followed by different cooling conditions and an integrated final tempering at 473 K for 3600 s. The average cooling rates, calculated in the range of 1393 K to 673 K, were 0.1, 0.235, 3, and 6 K/s, respectively. Vacuum heat treatment is supporting the bainitic-martensitic microstructure, the higher the faster cooling rate applied. This provides a marked increase in strength coupled to a decrease in ductility. The decrease of the impact energy after heat treatment is justified by the microstructural changes, especially if a part of bainite is converted to brittle martensite. Samples with bainitic microstructure presented higher impact energies than those with martensitic microstructure. This is fully confirmed by the fracture surface analysis at higher magnification, revealing three main micromechanisms of fracture: brittle, ductile and quasi-cleavage.

In situ observation of AZ61 Mg alloy with 1 and 5 wt% of Al₂O₃ in the scanning electron microscopy was performed to study influence of the weight fraction of Al₂O₃ particles on the deformation and fracture mechanism during tensile test. Structure of the experimental materials was also analysed; microstructures were heterogeneous, with randomly distributed globular Al₂O₃ particles (average diameter of 25 nm) and Mg₁₇Al₁₂ intermetallic phase (average diameter of 0.4 μ m). It was shown that during tensile deformation the failure of Mg₁₇Al₁₂ particles and decohesion of the matrix-Al₂O₃ particles interphase boundary started simultaneously. Decohesion resulted from the different physical properties of matrix and Al₂O₃ particles. The influence of the Al₂O₃ weight fraction on the final fracture was evident; for material with 5 wt% of Al₂O₃, the fracture surface was approximately perpendicular to the loading direction and for material with 1 wt% of Al₂O₃ was at 45° angle. Fracture surface had transcrystalline ductile character.
